The buzzing hum of the air conditioner filled the silent bullpen of the 21st district. The brick walls of the second floor were painted with the hues of the setting Chicago sun. Jay has just finished his last bits of paperwork. He and Adam were the only ones left in the bullpen as everyone else was already finished with their work for the day. Jay turned his computer off and stood from his chair. He stretched his body out while slightly lifting his shirt. He then gathered his things and looked at Adam. "I'm gonna head out," Jay says. Adam looked at him with his exhausted face as he made a mental note to not procrastinate with his paperwork anymore, but he knew that it would never happen. He nodded at Jay. "Goodluck, bro," Jay teased with his signature smile on his face. "Get out of here, man," Adam says in annoyance. Jay chuckled as his eyes landed on Hailey's organized and empty desk. His smile immediately disappeared as he sighed. He and Hailey didn't talk much while they were working on the case. He knew that something was up, but he didn't want to push it. Jay made his way down the stairs to the first floor to be met with Sgt. Platt's gazing eyes. It intimidated him for a second but he continued to head out of the district.
"I can't believe you really let detective goldilocks go," Sgt. Platt says as Jay passed her front desk. Jay's head immediately snapped towards Sgt. Platt. The shocked expression sprawled across his face told sgt. Platt what he was feeling. "What are you talking about?" Jay asked in disbelief. A confused expression immediately covered Sgt. Platt's face. She thought that Jay would be the first person who would know about this, but she guessed that she was mistaken. "She took her flight details to New York from me and left to go to the airport," Sgt. Platt informed. For a quick second, his mind went blank upon hearing the sudden news. Slowly, the gravity of the situation dawned on Jay and he was immediately bolting out of the district, rushing to his car. With shaking hands, he fumbled over his car keys as he tried to start the car's engine. Hailey was on her way to the airport. She was about to leave Chicago. She was about to leave him behind. Every thought that ate Jay's mind taunted him of losing yet another person he deeply cared about to the FBI He couldn't take that anymore. Never again would he let that happen.
Jay sped through the busy streets of Chicago until he arrived at the airport. He quickly parked his car neared the entrance. He didn't care about getting a ticket. He didn't care if it blocked the way for other cars to pass. The only image that remained in his head was her golden locks and piercing blue eyes slipping away from his reaches. Jay sprinted to the entrance and immediately presented his badge to the security. "It's an emergency," Jay stated with authority. The guard allowed him to pass and he arrived at a long line of passengers waiting for their turn through boarding security. He took a deep breath and started cutting his way through the line. "Hey! He's cutting!" a random passenger shouted towards Jay. He flashed him his badge and the passenger fell silent. He reached the end of the security line and said, "Chicago PD, it's an emergency." The security suspiciously eyed him. Jay's heart was beating faster and faster every second the security wasted by staring at him. "If something bad happens in there, it's gonna be your fault," Jay's voice dripped with such venom that no one dared to question him. The man swallowed anxiously and eventually let him through.
Jay immediately hurried to the huge board of flight information. "New York, New York, New York,..." Jay whispered to himself as he scanned through the list of flights. "New York," he breathed with a small sense of joy. He looked at the gate number and beside it said 'boarding'. Adrenaline took over his whole body, pumping his muscles to run as fast as he could to the gate. Once he arrived, he saw an airport clerk closing up the gate. He quickly made his way to the clerk's side as the clerk finished her task. "Woah, sir. You can't go through there anymore," the clerk said. At that very moment, all Jay was capable of feeling was pain. He felt as if he was stabbed by a thousand knives over and over. The throbbing sensation was then mixed with the feeling of betrayal. He didn't expect her to go with the offer. How could she? Did he not mean anything to her? Was he just another partner in her career of being a detective? "The plane is already leaving," the clerk hesitantly added. In the background, the wide glass panel looking at the runway showed a plane taking off. Memories shared with the blonde girl came flooding in. His voice began to choke in his throat. His whole being began to tremble at the sight he was witnessing. No, he couldn't let the tears fall. Not now. Jay made his way out of the airport and into his car. His depressive state told everyone around him not to bother him. He sadly drove his car through the busy streets of Chicago and back to his place.
Dark clouds covered the night sky of the city and trickles of water began to fall from the sky. Jay drove into the street of where his place was, then he suddenly sat up from his slumped position as he spotted a figure with long locks of blond on the sidewalk. He slowed his car to get a clearer look at the person's face, but to his disappointment it wasn't the person he was expecting it to be. After a few moments, Jay parked into his spot and got out of the car. He walked to his building while looking down at the ground. He was occupied with thoughts on how he could bring the woman he loved with his whole existence back into his arms. As Jay neared the building. "Hey", a voice he knew all too well reached his ears. He looked up and his eyes widened at the person in front of him. "Hailey," was all the brunette could utter, then he started rubbing his eyes continuously. This couldn't be real. He just watched Hailey's plane take off back at the airport. The surprised expression on Jay's face conveyed a flurry of emotions towards Hailey. All of a sudden, Jay cleared his throat and composed himself. "What-" Jay started but Hailey immediately cut him off as she shook her head and said, "I couldn't do it." With this, Hailey made her way closer to Jay. They were only a few steps away from each other. Jay slowly nodded as his heart slowly regained its entirety. Hailey took a deep breath and softly said, "I couldn't do it, because I couldn't leave you."
Jay was still stunned by the events that just happened, so he couldn't form any words to say to Hailey which made the woman in front of him a nervous wreck. Hailey didn't know how to convey her thoughts to Jay, the whole car ride to Jay's place was just her trying to find the words to say to him. However, right now all she was receiving from Jay was silence which made her second guess her decision to stay. Hailey bit her lip to keep herself from being an emotional wreck as she says, "Look, I know you told me to take the job and I was going to. But all I could think about on the car ride to the airport was you. I love you, Jay." A shocked expression grew on Hailey's face as she realized what she had just blurted out loud. She started panicking at how to change the topic of conversation. She tried looking for the words, but she suddenly felt something touch her lips. She felt a hand brushing her hair, and a strong arm around her body. The feeling on her lips suddenly vanished and she immediately opened her eyes to see Jay's eyes right in front of her. "I love you too, Hailey," Jay finally says. A smile immediately grew on both their faces as they felt drips of water on their faces. They both looked around at the rain pouring around them and back at each other. Their eyes conveyed everything they wanted to tell each other, then their lips met again.
