Well okay! This is probably the last Ducktales fic of the year. Depends on how fast I finish the last Big Hero 6 fic of the year.
I can't even feel bad about how weird this past month has been for writing, like I've mentioned before my entire Christmas plan disappeared due to 2020 depression, but I've written so much this year, and it has, frankly, been a terrible year. This is my 92nd story I've written/started in 2020. If you've been following me for a while, I'd love to hear what your favorite 2020 story of mine was, or what chaptered story you'd really like me to finish in 2021. I have a LOT of stuff planned for 2021 :)
Anyway, enjoy this dumb little premise.
When Huey, Dewey, and Louie were growing up they were taught that love had no limits and came in all different shapes and sizes. It was a nice sentiment but not always the easiest to understand, though, and they pieced together those different shapes slowly, with a lot of help. By their pre-teens, they could comprehend same-sex couples and were beginning to understand the complexities of gender identities but there was one thing that didn't click in their heads until they saw it for themselves- polyamory.
Dewey realized that people could have a plethora of partners (something that had never interested him) in an off-handed conversation with Launchpad. Launchpad was a romantic at heart and seemed to find love wherever he went. Which means he'd had partners of nearly every identity, oftentimes in open relationships. It had taken Dewey about three seconds to process that love is love and Launchpad was happy with his many relationships and by then they'd already moved on to the next topic.
Louie learned the way people in Hallmark Christmas movies learn important information- through a half-baked misunderstanding. At some point during his introduction to Uncle Donald's old band, Donald had said the words, "These are your Tios, Panchito and Jose." And upon learning that tio means uncle, Louie made the potentially incorrect assumption that Panchito and Jose were Uncle Donald's boyfriends, which was promptly followed by the correct assumption that having multiple partners was an okay thing that adults did all the time. And then Louie never fact-checked any of his assumptions because the matter didn't really concern him.
Huey was the one most likely to fall in love with two people at the same time and also the last one to learn that that was a thing that you were allowed to do. Fenton had been the one to break it to him. Huey had been pretty sure he understood Fenton's love life, as well as anyone could understand the complexities of love, until he got thrown a curveball. Or rather, two curveballs. Fenton had been helping Huey with a science project when he'd casually mentioned a date he'd been on with Launchpad and Drake.
Huey had paused, "Launchpad and Drake?"
"Yep."
"I thought you were dating Gandra."
"Oh sure, on and off."
"Was it a double date?"
"No, it was just us three."
"But aren't Launchpad and Drake, you know, dating each other?"
"Yeah. We're all dating. Launchpad is Drake's boyfriend, Drake is Launchpad's boyfriend, and they're my boyfriends. It's uh, it's called polyamory. There's a bunch of different forms but for us, we all date each other and we're allowed to go on dates with other people as long as all of our partners are in the loop. Well, Launchpad has a lot of partners so I doubt he tells all of them but that's the gist."
Huey's head was kind of spinning now.
"Huh." He must have looked incredibly confused.
"I know," Fenton said sympathetically, "romance is complicated. It was all new for me at first too. The important thing is that we're all happy and we all love each other. If that weren't the case, we wouldn't be together. Don't worry, Huey, you won't have to deal with that kind of thing for a while."
When Huey got home that night he approached his brothers incredulously, "Was no one gonna tell me you could date multiple people at the same time? Polyamory isn't mentioned once in the Junior Woodchuck Guidebook."
"Huh, so that's what it's called," Louie said. He and Dewey were sitting on his bunk taking turns with their handheld gaming console. Dewey liked the fighting bits and Louie liked to collect and spend coins.
"I don't know why you'd want to date more than one person, dating one person already sounds like too much work," Dewey said.
"You guys knew about this and didn't tell me?"
"I mean, kinda? I thought you knew. Uncle Donald has at least two boyfriends," Louie mentioned.
"And Launchpad is dating pretty much everyone," Dewey added.
"Wait, wait, hold your horses, Louie, who do you think Uncle Donald is dating?" Huey might just be learning about polyamory for the first time but he was pretty sure he would know if his uncle was playing the field.
"Uh, Tio Panchito and Tio Jose. Obviously."
"That's… Probably not true. Where'd you get that idea?"
"He calls them our uncles, so I assumed they were in a relationship, sue me. Actually please don't sue me, Louie Inc. can't deal with another lawsuit right now."
"Another? Nope, I don't want to know." Huey climbed up next to his brothers on the bunk and flopped back.
"Love is so complicated…"
"I'll drink to that," Louie agreed, cracking a Pep! and enjoying the first carbonated sip, "Huey, you want the rest of this? You look like you're running on empty."
"I'm just trying to understand romance."
"Dude, no one in our family understands romance," Louie laughed, passing Huey the rest of the Pep!
"I certainly don't," Dewey said, dying in his video game and letting out a dramatic groan.
"I'm gonna be the first, then. I'll fill you guys in as soon as I know more." Huey sat up and took the second sip of Pep! already in research mode.
"Thanks, I appreciate that," Louie said with a smile.
The three of them sat in silence for a while, taking turns gaming, blissfully young and untroubled by matters of the heart. However, one nagging thought remained.
"Is Uncle Donald really not dating Panchito or Jose?"
