Chapter 11

Past is closer than you think

It's been a week or so since the acquisition of the first item on the list from the burning down museum. Sadly, no new information to lead towards the other ones appeared since. All Betty could do in meanwhile is her job as a hunter and the leader. Several years ago she began to cooperating with other hunters in order to get some info on the creature she was about to meet, or met already, and to give such info if needed. Eventually more and more people of her profession joined their little organization, transforming it to the worldwide network. Even people outside of it like loners, witches and other folk familiar with supernatural world were using their services times to times, for a reward of course.

With leg placed on the car's panel, Betty was sharpening her favorite combat knife. For some unknown reason it had a calming effect on her. However a phone's ringtone made Betty to put away both knife and sharpening rod in instant. With a quick look at the caller id, she answered, hoping for good news.

"I'm listening Will." she told in her usual calm tone.

"I've got a new lead to one of that you were looking for. However…"

'Of course there is However.' Betty thought and rolled her eyes.

"… the source is, for a lack of better words, shady." Du finished the sentence.

"What do you mean by that?"

"Well, the person who contacted me is part of an organization, and when i asked the name of it, he simply answered that it changes every month and they currently in between names."

"Shady indeed."

"At least he told me the name of their leader. A man called Gemini."

Without a second of hesitation, Betty hit her forehead right in the center of a steering wheel, triggering a loud honk from the car.

"Miss Director, are you alright?" Du asked with worry.

"I'm fine, William." she answered, while raising her forehead up and petting it slightly. "You sure he said Gemini?"

"Yes."

"And you are sure Gemini has the item i want?"

"The description is perfectly matching the second item on your list."

"Great…" she sighed.

"Do you know this Gemini person Miss? You sound troubled about it."

"It is my personal business Will. Anyway, how do i contact the one who gave away the info."

"He left a number to call and his, well, name. Theta."

"Send it to me immediately."

Almost as soon as she stopped the call, a message appeared on her phone with all information she needed. Despite the fact that hunter Will Du can be unbearably snooty and annoying at times, he did proved to be an essential and useful part of organization. Reliable would be the best word to describe him.

"Well…" Betty said with no trace of happiness in her voice and pushed gas pedal to the floor. "It's time for a family visit."

Middleton High was usually busy even after all classes are finished. Despite lack of funding in recent years, it managed to keep decent amount of clubs and committees, most of which counts young miss Possible as a member. Even if she physically can't attend all of them, she often could be found helping with event organizations, PR, and other smaller things. According to the girl herself, she liked to stay busy, plus it shows positively on her record and future college applications.

"Thank you for helping me with this Carl." Kim said, hanging a poster on the wall with clear sticky tape.

"No problem K." Carl smiled, holding a bunch of them in hands.

Kim looked at the poster to check if she hanged it straight or not. It was an announcement of the football match in neer future, with insignias and names of both teams, and time of the event.

"Good." Kim nodded approvingly and began to walk towards next point.

"Uhm, K?" Carl followed her. "I, ehm, well, i actually wanted to talk to you about something…"

"Yeah, sure, go on." she answered nonchalantly.

"Remember that thing we talked about?"

"Be more specific Carl."

"You know, about better influence and stuff?"

"Oh yeah." Kim got a little closer to a boy and lowered her voice a bit. "So, how is it going?"

"Well…" Carl laughed worriedly. "To be completely honest, it tanked."

"How bad?"

"Completely." he admitted. "For many guys football team is the main asset for getting in college, and since Brick is the leader they are trying to be in his group. Others are plain assholes, but that's another story. Long story short, if i even try to stir anything now, i might be kicked from the team."

"Ooh, that's bad." Kim said, hanging another poster. "Sorry for that. You know, me and girls will stand behind you if something happen."

"Glad to hear it, however better safe than sorry."

"I understand." Kim walked up to him and kissed his cheek. "Thanks for trying."

"Sorry again." Carl couldn't resist a smile.

"NP, i'll think something up. Honestly, things ain't going fast from my end either." Kim sighed.

"Well, as everybody knows there are three constant things in Middleton: the greasiest hot-dogs are always sold near train station, if there's a giant line in mall's bathroom that means sales, and everything is possible for a Possible."

"You are real charmer today." she added a little flirt in her vocals.

"Only for you. And maybe Tara." he joked as rolled up poster lightly hit him on the head.

"And the charm is gone." Kim said smiling, with said poster in hand.

The darkest, most evil and inhuman moment in history, according to Ron Stoppable, was the day when some villain decided to add letters to math. Sometimes he wished that algebra would grow up and solved its own problems. Sadly life wasn't that easy on him, or on his female friend. They were sitting in school library, hopelessly drilling sheet papers with their eyes.

"Ok, i think i got it." Bonnie mouthed tiredly, leaning head on her left hand. "Let's insert answers to equation, and, it's wrong. Argh, this one is impossible!"

"I think i broke the thingy in my head that was helping me do other thingies." Ron mumbled with his face lying upon the pages of textbook.

Redhead cheerleader entered the library and hanged the poster near the door. For a moment her eyes and Bonnie's met with pure malice. Ron rolled his head on the book to see the same cheerleader waving him with smile. He waved back as she left the room.

'That two-faced hussy.' Bonnie hissed in her head. 'What is her problem with me?'

A loud rumble coming from boy's stomach was heard throughout library, even making old woman behind the counted to shush at them.

"Sorry, all this homework makes me hungry." he said sheepishly.

"Alright then. I think we deserved a meal." Bonnie gathered her stuff from the table. "Burgers or mexican?

"Bueno Nacho!" Ron instantly straightened up on his chair.

"As you wish." she chuckled, founding his behavior kind of cute.

After collecting his textbooks and notes, Ron followed Bonnie to the door. He stopped at the new poster and looked at it out of curiosity, a decision he regretted almost instantly. On it in bright bold letters was written: Middleton Mad Dogs vs Lowerton Weasels, with the date of the event printed lower. The name of the team alone made Ron shiver inside. Bad memories flew into his tired head like moth to a flame.

"It is my work! I have proof!"

"Stop lying Stoppable, i've got enough proof already. If you continue pressing the matter i'll have to take measures!"

"Why you won't believe me?"

"You really think you can win this? You are nobody, a loser! You have no power here."

"This is wrong!"

"Sorry sweetie. I wish we could do something about it."

"This isn't fair!"

"W-we don't know anything Ron. Stop t-talking to us."

"Why is this happening?"

"We did everything we could Ronnie."

"Ron?" Bonnie tapped his shoulder. "Are you ok?"

"Ah? Wha?" Ron blinked, and shook his head.

"You went blank for a moment." she held his sleeve and led him out of the library. "Come on, hunger is really bad for you. Let's go and get some nacho."

"Woo hoo!" Ron put as much enthusiasm as his body allowed at the moment.

Ron's studies went pretty well, if a bit slow. With Bonnie's help after classes he was closer and closer in catching up with school's program with every passing day. Thankfully for him, and to a slight irritation from young witch's side, it was pretty quiet in school in terms of supernatural occurrences, so they had enough time to focus on studies. While Ron was trying to understand textbooks at his room, Bonnie was practicing her spells.

She walked down to her basement and turned the lights on. Dark blob began to shake violently, making an awful sound in a process. He was trapped in what seemed to be a form of pentagrams with several circles filled with chain of symbols. No matter how hard creature tried. It couldn't go passed the last circle, like there were invisible walls in there.

"Hello to you to Fido." Bonnie sighed tiredly.

"Alright BonBon, let's not overwork today, you seem quite tired already. You know, we can skip practice all together today if you want."

"One try, please. I reworked spell a bit."

"Alright, one try, but that's all for tonight. I'm proud that you work your hardest for that, but don't overwork yourself please." Ryan told in a fatherly manner.

"Says you." Bonnie rolled her eyes.

"You want to go to your room so soon young lady?" he fixed his glasses a bit.

"Nope, one try it is." she immediately retaliated.

"Good. Now, let's see what you've got."

Bonnie made a deep breath and remembered everything Ryan taught her.

'Alright, focus on creature before you, feel its essence, cast the spell thinking of the shape of the portal i want, send it back to its world. Let's do this.'

"Gates of light…" she mouthed, trying to keep her focus on the slime monster.

Bright cyan and white vortex appeared under the creature.

"…get this fiend off my sight!" she felt as her powers failed mid-sentence, as vortex disappeared, leaving slime monster in the room. "Dang it, so close."

"Not bad wording." Ryan commented.

"Thanks dad, i tried to rhyme it, like you do with some spells. However nine words is still too much. Maybe i can shorten it a bit more."

"You can do it. Also, rhymes help, they do, but it might be counter-productive in your case."

"How so?"

"I use long spells and rhymes to compensate for my weaknesses. You however, just like your sisters, inherited magic potency of Rockwallers from your mother. Your power not in specific wording, but in intent, imagination, synthesis of both thoughts and feelings. At least so i heard from a really reliable source."

"I guess so. Sounds right to me." she said looking at her hands.

"Now, let's go upstairs and clean up for dinner."

Ron felt under the bridge. He was lying on the bed, looking at the white ceiling, lost in his own thoughts. He didn't want to feel this way, however poster with his old school's football team name on it steered the whole package of bad memories in him. Memories of how it all started, small chain of events that led him to the Middleton.

'Maybe i should talk with Mrs. Possible about this?'

Ron slowly stood from his bed and walked up to the Mr. and Mrs. Possible room's door. As he was ready to knock politely, he heard sobs coming from the other end.

"Why them James?" he could hear Ann say. "God, i miss them so much."

"I know Ann, i know." James said, trying to comfort his wife.

Ron hanged head slightly and walked downstairs, he didn't want to disturb them, especially now. Thinking that a distraction could be helpful now he walked to the lounge, where big plasma TV was, and noticed twins on the couch occupying it.

"Ryahahahaha!" a maniacal laugh came from TV's sound system. "Welcome to my lair Hero, prepare to meet your ultimate DOOM!"

"What are you watching?" Ron asked, curiously.

"Failed pilots of superhero shows." Jim said, chewing a potato chip.

"And after that Fearless Ferret marathon, Cheese Fest on channel 15." Tim said.

"Can i join?" Ron asked.

"Bring more snacks." both of them said in unison.

"Alright!" Ron took snacks from kitchen and joined twins on the couch, watching corny mindless show with them for the rest of the evening.

Far away from that scene however, in the lair of a certain organization of indecisive name the chaos was blooming full force. Chimera was chewing on a big meat steak in the corner with snake that grew instead of its tale was tied in a knot. Harpy couldn't untangle itself from a heavy net. Basilisk running around turning unfortunate minions into stone. Hellhounds trying to chase and eat that basilisk. And two people, standing in the office room above all that.

"Please, have a seat." said a man with robotic right hand.

Miss Director hit the chair, after which it catapulted out in the glass wall.

"So predictable Sheldon." Betty said. "Now, fun is over, i want to ask of you one thing."

"You broke into my lair, broke my toys, hurt my pets, and you DARE to ASK something?" he hit the table, upon what a small chihuahua on his lap began to bark. "Oh, it's ok Pepe, daddy didn't want to scare you."

"Gross." huntress commented. "I didn't hurt anything that didn't try to hurt me. All fair in self-defense."

"Fine." he scoffed. "What do you want from me?"

"That thing behind you." she pointed out on a small figurine of young woman.

"That's it? I got that when i bought stuff in a bulk to get the hydra egg. You can take this it's worthless for me." Gemini tossed the item towards her. "But i'm expecting a better birthday present next time for that."

She caught the figurine and walked out, hearing her brother cursing under his breath behind her back. When she approached the main exit she saw one of the goons, wearing a uniform with greek letter on it, waiting for her.

"I guess you are Theta?" she saw him nod, and reached to him several banknotes. "Thank you for the information."

"Uhm, excuse me, can i ask you one more thing?" he said and pulled a paper and a pen from his pocket. "Can i have you autograph?"
