Chapter 14

Crossway - part 2

Bonnie was truly glad that Ron didn't pressed on the issue of her snapping at Kim earlier today. She understood that her rather aggressive tone was excessive in that particular situation, since red head cheerleader apparently had no idea of Ron's struggle with his old schoolmates, and especially one particular football player. Still, she couldn't feel defensive towards Ron. He did share with her something very personal after all, making her feel what it's like to have an actual friend. And Kim's chirpy attitude around Ron, and around the school to be honest, along with clear hostile attitude towards her just added to frustration. In Bonnie's opinion chanced of them getting along are falling passed a zero mark and plummeting fast through negative numbers.

"You have two minutes left." she said, checking wall clock feeling writing something on a paper.

"Aw man…" Ron's hand now moved rapidly on the sheet.

For the past three or so weeks she was tutoring him in school's library almost every weekday after classes. It's not been an easy task, to say the least, but it was quite enjoyable as well, she liked the challenge. Ron was helping her as well, by tutoring her in chemistry. It's not like she was bad in it, but there is always a way for improvement, and that B she got for the last test was bothering her a bit. Ron's explanations were always weird however. He used craziest analogies to describe things. Sometimes it was harder to understand what he said than a textbook. But again, it was fun.

"Time's up" she said and snatched the paper from Ron.

"Hey I didn't finish that!" he was half-whining.

"That's a point of time limit, here, check mine while I'll do yours." she handled him hers paper with chemistry test on it.

"I promise to be strict, but fair. Mostly strict." he said out of spite.

"Same here." Bonnie smirked and compared the test with answer sheet she had nearby. "Well, I'd say it's a solid B."

"Booyah!" Ron did a fist bump in the air.

"Boo-what?" she asked immediately.

"Uhm…nothing." Ron faced paper sheepishly.

"Aha. So, how's my test."

"Well, good, but you forgot one important chemical element here." he said, scribing Ah! on the paper and showed it to her. "An element of surprise!"

"Come on." she let a chuckle. "Seriously, how I did?"

"It's a solid A. Good job miss Rockwaller." he nodded in the most condescending teacher-like voice he could do.

"Well of course!" she put her nose up. "Ok, since we done, how about a treat."

"Bueno Nacho here we go!" Ron stood, quickly gathering his stuff.

"I didn't say anything about Bueno Nacho." she said teasingly.

"You are kidding me, right?" Ron's voice wavered. "Right?"

Bonnie walked away from him, suppressing a laugh. Her phone chimed a ringtone, interrupting this playful torture.

"Yes dad." she answered a call. "Yeah he's with me. Huh?" she turned towards Ron. "Dad asks if you can come by around six."

"Ehm…sure, why not."

"Yeah, he will. Aha, see ya home." she put phone back to the pants' pocket. "You ok?"

"Yeah, pff, I'm great." his voice was shaking a bit.

"Still afraid of my dad?" Bonnie shook her head, seeing his agreeing eyes. "Wonder why he asks for you though. Maybe he wants about Gil?"

"Maybe." he said with a gulp. "You know, there is one good way to ease a nerve – eating something. Like taco grande or extra cheesy nacho bowl."

"We'll see." Bonnie rolled her eyes, anticipating cheesy snack herself.

At the school's stadium that was properly cleaned up to the game spectators slowly began to fill bleachers. Kim showed her parents their place; she reserved them in advance so they had a good view on a game as well as on cheerleaders.

"Here it is." she stopped at the spot properly marked by folded paper with Reserved printed on it.

"Thank you Kimmie." Ann smiled and sat with her husband nearby.

"This is really good seats." James commented.

"I know, I wanted to save one for Ron too, but he didn't want to come." her shoulders lowered a bit.

"Not surprising." James sighed.

"What?" Kim blinked, utterly confused.

"It's nothing Kimmie." Ann waved her palm sideways, discreetly shoving an elbow in her hubby's side. "You probably should check on the team, they are probably shaking before the game."

"Yeah, right. Sure."

Moving around bleachers Kim noticed several teens from Lowerton school. Team arrived a half hour ago and already changed into their gear, along with cheerleaders. Truthfully Middleton team had something to fear. Opponent's team was really intimidating, buff guys, angry look. Middleton guys really needed some inspirational speech after seeing them.

"Hey." girl's voice came from nearby. "You are Kim, right?"

She turned towards the source of the voice to see a Lowerton cheerleader with short brown curly hair.

"Hi, I'm Megan, we met in last Cheerleading contest." girl said, hiding behind a pillar.

"Yeah, I do remember you, hi Megan." Kim felt a little uneasy, as girl before her was look nervously side to side.

"Can we speak somewhere private?" she asked.

"Yeah, sure, follow me."

This girl was acting weird. She was looking around constantly, and dove to the side couple times when anyone from Lowerton team was nearby. As they entered empty gym, girl breathed with ease.

"So…" Kim raised an eyebrow in suspicion. "What's your biz?"

"Sorry, could let myself be seen." she said, trying to give a weak smile. "I just have a question to ask."

"Well shoot."

"Uhm, i heard Ron Stoppable transferred in Middleton High. Do you, perhaps, happen to know him, or something?"

"I…I am. I mean, yeah i do know him" Kim was taken aback by this question.

"Really?" girl asked hopefully.

"Yeah, he's a friend of mine."

"This is great!" Megan smiled brightly. "Tell me how is he?"

"He's…fine, I think."

"You don't sound sure." girl looked a bit worried now. "Say, did he try to hit on girls, or become popular, or shouting weird nonsense words which even nerds will find embracing?"

"Not really." Kim shrugged. "He is silly at times but nothing that extreme."

"Ow, I see." Megan sighed heavily. "So he's not fine at all."

"Wait, what do you mean?"

"Ron i knew once asked every single girl to the School Ball. Everyone rejected him, including me." she felt guilty. "He wasn't high enough on a Food Chain for me to… nah just an excuse, forget it."

"I get it." Kim tried to reassure her.

"Thanks."

"Anyway, if you are his friend I can contact him and …" Kim was ready to pull out the phone.

"No, no please, I don't think he would want to see me right now, or anyone from Lowerton High for that matter."

"What, why?"

"It's not a pretty story."

"Listen." Kim said seriously. "If it's something that can help Ron to get better, I want to know."

"Well, ok. But I warned you."

With each word Kim felt sicker and sicker. The way Ron got treated in his old school hit hard on her. On the first day she ditched him, based on the school social status. She was thinking that his problems could be solved if he was higher on the Food Chain, when this is the last thing he probably would want; honestly it would only make her lives easier instead of his. Knowing this it's obvious why he chose company of the most awkward and weird girl in school instead of her and anyone else. In the matter of fact this story would perfectly explain both her father's remark and Bonnie's outburst.

'She knows!' realization hit her. 'He told her! And not me…of course he didn't.'

"Well, after that he stopped going to school, nobody was the wiser until we heard that he got in accident and got in the hospital. I don't think anyone had guts to visit him, but I heard some send texts with get well wishes, really hypocritical if you ask me, after whole school turned their back on him before."

"Megan, just so you know, i'm really thankful that you told me about it. And also…" Kim was trembling with anger. "This just costed your team a victory."

With a fierce determination Kim walked out of the gym and went straight towards boy's locker room. She opened door wide, slamming it to the wall, getting attention of everyone in it, including Steven Barkin, who happened to be a substitute school football trainer, since the current one broke a leg trying to reach a dollar bill on the stairs. He slipped and fell.

"Hey Mr. Barkin." sweet but somehow unsettling smile stretched on Kim's face. "Mind if i say couple inspirational words to guys?"

"Sure, knock yourself out Possible." Barkin took couple steps behind.

"Thank you." Kim jumped on a bench, facing the team, with a fire in her eyes, sweet smile changed to aggressive grin. "Listen up! If any of you thinks that those Lowerton guys are better than us just because they haven't lost several games in a row, take that thought and slam it to the wall! You all worked your butts out for this day. And now we'll show them that Middleton Mad Dogs don't just bark, we bite! If anyone of them will try to take an initiative - trash him, if anyone tries to make a move - crush him, no mercy. Let's go on the field and show them who are the top dogs around here!"

"YEAH!" team roared and stomped fast away from the locker.

"Very passionate speech Possible." Barkin nodded.

"Thank you." Kim smiled sweetly again. "I need to go too, me and girls gonna give the best cheer this town have ever seen."

"This girl can be scary sometimes." Barkin muttered under his breathe, taking a mental note to not make young Possible his enemy.

After a bit more teasing, Bonnie give up, to the Ron's utter happiness, so they spend some time in the fast-food restaurant. With his elegantly gross manners, that could only belong to yours truly Ron Stoppable, boy munched a meal of three, drank a large soda in alarmingly fast rate, and finished with a short satisfying burp. Bonnie showed her disgust by cringing and making a gag gesture, jokingly. Second later they both burst with small laugh. Despite starting on really awkward rocky road, both of them learned to ease up more and more with time. After the meal they took a stroll through a town, stopping for a bit at the familiar playground to sit on the swings and eating ice-cream bought from the store nearby. In the list of things Bonnie haven't even thought could happen in recent years walking around with a friend was up high, along with meeting bigfoot dressed in the hula dress. Though considering the amount of weird stuff she witnessed along with her dad, it wouldn't be that far from reality. Eventually they headed toward her home, with Ron understandably tensing up, and Bonnie joking about it, trying to make him relax a bit, that wasn't really working well.

"And, here we are." she turned towards a normal suburban two-story yellow house with red roof.

"Huh, never saw it from this point of you." Ron noted with a nervous short laugh.

"Oh yeah. This is your first time entering my home, well, properly."

Bonnie pulled keys from the pocket, keychain with black silhouette of a cat on it dangled. She entered, with Ron following behind, dropping keys in a bowl nearby.

"Wonder if dad's home already." Bonnie said out loud.

"Yes i am sweetie." Ryan appeared from around a corner, startling the heck out of Ron. "Nice to see you today Ronald. Now, follow me to the study please."

"Well that certainly ain't ominous at all." Ron muttered quietly under his breath.

As they all got to the study, Ryan closed the door behind and went towards his desk with a purple sphere shimmering on top of it, right next to unopened bottle of water.

"Glad you made it today, Ron." he said flatly.

"Ehm, what matter, sit?" Ron asked, fidgeting awkwardly on the spot.

"You're memories of our world of magic creatures and us, it's time to clean it up. I believe i have found the most safe and effective way."

"Dad, wait." Bonnie instinctively stood before her friend. "Do we have to…"

"We had an agreement Bonnie." Ryan interrupted her, knowing what she wanted to say. "Our partnership with Ronald was only temporary."

"But…"

"No Bonnie, we are not going to leave it like that. Ronald had been with us for a month and a half, and was in danger at least three times, one time being a prime target. A mere awareness of this side of the world makes him, or anyone else for that matter, an involuntary magnet for supernatural. Figuratively."

"It wasn't his fault, it was because of me…" Bonnie swallowed her words.

"Exactly. However it would be only a matter of time until he'd get in trouble without you around."

"But…"

"Ehm excuse me, can i have a word in this?" Ron raised a slightly shaken point finger before him.

"Sure." Ryan nodded, readjusting his glasses.

"True, i got in a p-pinch once or twice with Bonnie here, but h-honestly, i don't really mind and…" Ron took a breath too settle down a bit. "…and i would rather not have my brains scrabbled. I mean, can't we just leave it as it is?"

Bonnie looked at him with small hopeful smile. Honestly after things they've been through together she was incredibly glad about his outlook on that. It wasn't pleasant to be a punching bag of beasts or be cursed, anyone else would flee from this after a first struggle, but not Ron.

"You are a good person Ronald." Ryan acknowledged it and pointed at the item on his desk. "Also it won't 'scramble' your brain, but shield it. It called Morgana's tear. All you need to do to hold this sphere while unconscious, as asleep, and morning after you won't remember any magical occurrences in your life, as item itself dissolve. In fact, the power of the spell inside is so strong, you will forget any supernatural encounters in the future. It will fade from your memory in hour or two. It will protect your past, present and future."

"ANY magical or supernatural things?" Bonnie's eyes widened, she didn't want it to be true. "What about me then, will he remember me?"

"No, i'm afraid not." it pained Ryan to deliver this, as he could see a pure distress on his daughter's face. "And as i mentioned earlier, even if you try to become acquaintances again, he will forget you anyway."

"That's cruel!" she shouted and stomped.

"It's a necessity."

"Uhm, i don't think it's a good idea too." Ron spoke once again, now a bit bolder, just a bit. "Forgetting all about Bonnie feels wrong, ya know.

"This is going nowhere." Mr. Rockwaller exhaled. "Bonnie, can you leave me and Ron for a bit?"

"Like hell i will!" she spouted harshly.

"Language young lady."

"Who cares about language! I will not leave his side, until you drop that stupid plan of yours!"

"I see, in that case. You are grounded, Bonnie's room, twenty minutes lock!"

"Wha-"

With a bright flash of light, Bonnie disappeared from the room. A sound of someone falling on the floor upstairs could be heard, followed by muffled shouting and what sounded like attempts of knock something out, unsuccessfully. Ron was about to ask what was that and where is Bonnie disappeared, but staying now one on one with Mr. Rockwaller proved to be too intimidating to let out any comments.

"Don't worry she's alright." Ryan said, reading boy's face, as crashing noises kept coming from the upstairs. "It's just a spell that me and my late wife came up with to restrain outraged magical teenage daughters. Bonnie is magically locked in her room."

"Ok." Ron forced the comment of his throat in a short high pitch.

"Now, i just want to warn you, what i am about to do is very unpleasant, for me as well."

"I don't like where this is goi…" Ron shivered and tried to make a step back.

"Channel my mind, show the image of the past!" in a swift motion, Ryan grabbed boy's forehead with his left hand and closed his eyes.

A mess of images, sounds and smells rushed into Ron's head. Half eaten mangled remains different human parts, severed heads, sounds of flesh ripping from the bones by different creatures. Smell of rotten bodies, dead people walking around, living people begging to end their suffering. All this different images flew over fast, but each one of them left a strong impact.

Ryan, knowing perfectly what reaction will be by experience, quickly retrieved a plastic bucket from behind the desk and put it in front of Ron. Just as expected by him, poor boy began to emptying his stomach in it. Ron was throwing up uncontrollably; his stomach was twisting with a horrible sucking sensation, as well as his throat. His eyes was watering, his breathing was rapid, heart beating in higher rate. Spasm continued even without any substance to move outside.

"Here." Ryan reached a hand with bottled water. "You should drink some, or your body will be too dehydrated."

Ron dropped his butt on the floor and made several gulps, and stopped, trying to suppress another throw up. When the gag feeling calmed down a bit he drank some more.

"What in the hell was that?" he shrieked.

"Those were my memories. my experience, things i witnessed personally." Ryan explained calmly. "Listen carefully Ronald, there is a reason why i did this."

"To freak me out?"

"To warn you. Bonnie's grandfather from my wife's side did the same to me when i was about to start my education as a witch. And i did this to my daughters as well, so they can decide if they were ready for this responsibility or not. This is just a small part of the darkness that dwells out there. As long as you associate yourself with Bonnie or me, one of those things might appear before you…" Ryan took a small pause to emphasize the message. "Or ones close to you."

Ron's eyes widened up, obviously he understood now. Ryan helped him stood from the floor by pulling him up by his arm. He turned towards his desk and took purple sphere from the desk. For a moment his eyes stopped on the framed picture nearby, with him and his wife on it, both hugging each other, smiling happily.

'Emily.' his heart felt a sting.

He looked at the item in his hand, as a small spark of doubt appeared. Had he looked at all options available or only at the most convenient one? He knew, Ron's memories should be erased, either by boy's own will, sole reason he showed him horrors of his world, or by force, which he was reluctant to do. What he is doing is already wrong on many levels, both towards boy and Bonnie, forcibly using item on him would be for a very least disrespectful to all things that boy did and endured for last month and a half. Still he would have to do it is it comes to it. But was it really best way to deal with it? What would his late wife say on this matter, if she was still around?

"I'm going to give you an option." Ryan spoke slowly, evaluating each word before letting it out. "I will give Morgana's tear to you. This night i want you to think if you want to use it or not. And if you decide to keep your memories, find me, i'll hear your reasons, and decide how solid they are. I need to know if you truly ready to responsibilities and consequences, and if i find your reasoning weak, i will make sure you forget all about us myself. Are we clear on that?"

"Y-yes." Ron said, taking the sphere from Ryan's hand.

"Good. Now i need you to leave, before spell on Bonnie's room wear off."

"Can i…"

"No." Ryan interrupted him. "I know you want to talk to her right now, but i need your decision to be yours. You understand what i mean?"

Ron just nodded and dragged his feet to the exit, stopping for a second on the porch to look back, and walking on the streets after it.

Ryan waited couple minutes before going upstairs. According to noises, Bonnie still hadn't stopped her attempts to free herself, though frequency of crashing sounds lowered down a bit, pointing on her getting tired.

"BonBon, i'm opening your door." he announced loudly, and waited until there were no banging at the door. "Time off, release."

Door opened wide the same moment, revealing heavy breathing Bonny, with messy hair on her head and scowl on her lips. Her room was in a bigger mess though, with books lying on the ground, along with lamp, TV, school supplies, dvd boxes, and even shelves. A strong gust of wind does not go well with enclosed space.

"Where is Ron?" she asked, demandingly.

"He went home a couple minutes ago."

"Did you…"

"I haven't erased his memory, yet" Ryan answered, stepping into the room, as a melting ice shard, another remains of her attempts to break through, crumpled under his foot. "I showed him consequences of our lifestyle, gave him an item and send him home to decide if he wants to use it or not."

"Showed him consequences… Oh no, no." Bonnie felt panic overwhelming her. "You did NOT do what i think you do."

"I'm afraid yes. I showed him some of my not so pleasant memories."

"I need to talk to him" she muttered quietly under her breath and looked around, desperately trying to find her cellphone in the chaos that filled her room.

"Bonnie, don't do it." he said, but was ignored. "Bonnie in has to be HIS choice."

"I don't care!" she said, noticing her phone under one of the fallen books.

"Bonnie!" he raised his voice. "You know what kind of my memories i showed to him. You really want him to be in the danger just because of your whim?"

Holding the device in her hands Bonnie stopped.

"Bonnie i'm sorry, but it has to be done. It's for his own good to use Morgana's tear. And in case if he doesn't, unless Ron could give me a good reason to not erase his memories of us, i'm going to deal with him myself tomorrow. This is my final decision."

"Get out." her voice cracked, she couldn't even looking at her father now. "Get out of my room!"

Ryan stepped out quietly, closing the door behind him. He could hear her cry even through it. Bonnie broke down completely, tears running on her cheeks. Sniffling she whipped them with a wrist, but they won't stop. It her trembling hands she held the cellphone, knowing that she didn't had enough guts to call Ron. In the end, it really should be his choice alone.
