Chapter 15
The decision
"This is madness! This is a bloody slaughter! Middleton Mad Dogs keep staying on the attack and have no intention to slow down!" an overly enthusiastic announcer hollered out from his lungs. "And it's 5… 4… 3… 2… 1… MAD DOGS WIN!"
Crowd on the bleachers exploded with cheers, throwing peanuts, popcorn, and everything they had in people's hands a moment prior right to the air. Cheerleaders joined, building a pyramid formation with Kim on top, looking from above on the defeated opponent. Middleton football team, sweaty, out of breath, with their bodies pushed to their limits, still managed to find enough strength to celebrate as well.
The other team obviously wasn't as cheery. It supposed to be an easy match for them, just a small bump on the way to keep the trophy on their grounds for another year. And yet here they were. Defeated, broken, humiliated.
"Damn it!" Lowerton's quarterback angrily threw his helmet on the field. "What the hell was that? Were you idiot even trying?"
"Oh shut up Chad!" one guy from the defensive line confronted him. "Don't act like it's all our fault! You couldn't even pass their defense without losing a ball!"
"What did you say?" Chad grabbed guy's shirt.
"What we all wanted to say." one more guy from the defense stepped in, shoving the quarterback.
"So it's my fault you are garbage?" Chad was getting really red from frustration.
"Like you were any better there!" another Lowerton guy, this time from offensive line, barged in the quarrel. "At least some of us manage to score a touchdown or two unlike you!"
"Maybe if you dumbasses did your jobs right…"
"Oh shut up, you know, some of us a really tired of your «I'm above you all» bullshit!" first guy from defensive said.
"Why you…"
"Stop that!" Lowerton team coach stepped into the field. "Don't embarrass yourselves any more here. We lost, that happened. Your overconfidence was your downfall, once it got shaken you all became an uncoordinated mess. Especially you, Chad. Once we are back, I'll triple the workout regime to beat that out off all of you. Now pick up the rest of your dignity and pay respect to the other team, they deserved it today."
"Fuck!" Chad kicked his helmet and stormed off the field, with some cheerleaders and football team guys following him, despite an order from the coach.
"That little punk. I'll gonna have a hell of a talk with principal later." coach growled and looked at the Lowerton students who decided to stay. "At least some of you have guts to admit defeat."
As remains of a team walked to the Mad Dogs to shake their hands, a certain cheerleader looked at Kim, and quietly mouthed 'Thank you'.
Crowed from the bleachers began to disperse, as Lowerton team went away to change their clothes and drive back to their school. Middleton team meanwhile gathered together, surrounded by friends and family that came to see the game.
"Yo kim!" Carl ran to Kim, with widest smile. "Just talked to my cousin, he invites everyone to his club! All day all night. He booked it for today for us! You're going, right? I mean, it's your speech that gave us the kick to win."
"I don't know… i…"
"Come on Possible, you must join us" Brig Flagg appeared nearby and began chanting. "Possible! Possible!"
"Possible Possible! Possible!" crowd around joined the chant.
"Fine, fine, i'll go ask my parents first though."
"Yeah!" team cheered.
Both of her parents were still near bleachers, waiting for her.
"That was a great game Kimmie-cub" James said to his daughter.
"Yeah, guys did their best." Kim said. "Listen, team is going to celebrate at the club, they got reservation till tomorrow and all, can i go too?"
"Sure, just be careful around boys and be home no later than 9 p.m.. Also, have i told you already about the boys…" James told, with priorities clear as water.
"Go and have some fun, i'll pick you up at 11." Ann said.
"Isn't it too late for her…" her husband asked, still worrying about those boys.
"Stop being such a worry-wart. Kimie has good head on her shoulders, and i'm pretty sure no boy can try anything with her against her will and walk out straightly."
"Thanks Mom." Kim smiled and hugged her folks. "Trust me, i'll be fine. I'll text club's address later."
At the Possible residence, Ron was lying on his bed, pondering upon a dilemma. His right hand was up in the air, reached towards a ceiling, with purple item firmly grasped in his palm. It was slightly see-through, with, what looked like, three waves of light constantly dancing inside. The more he tried to think about whether use it or not, the more his mind hit a metaphorical dead end. He owed a lot to Possible's. After the accident Ann wasn't only looking after him, but also dealing with parent's funeral, his relatives, paperwork, and many more other things. Some people of the Stoppable family were arguing against the decision Ron's mom and dad made about Possible's caretaker rights, but any protest gone mute soon, due to Ann utter conviction. She and James were officially Ron's godmother and godfather respectively after all.
In the end, the right choice should be the one that makes them safe. Still, however, Ron felt as it was at the same time equally wrong, somehow. Every time he came close to making a decision, Bonnie flowed up in his mind. Dismissive at first, the girl showed her softer side the next day they met, slowly getting her confidence back. Soon it was clear that Bonnie wasn't just friendly quiet girl with magic powers, she was bossy, prideful, stubborn and snarky as hell. But all that somehow drew him even more. It suited her naturally. He didn't think he could honestly call someone a friend so soon after the incident. And this was one of the main reasons why forgetting about her for the rest of his life felt so wrong. A thought of leaving her to be alone, without a friend once again, even if it was for a good reason, made him want to kick himself.
"Hey!" Possible twins barged in the room.
"Wah!" Ron got startled, sphere dropped from his shaken hand on his nose. "Ow!"
"Dude…" Jim said chucking.
"… are you ok?" Tim added suppressing a laugh.
"Yeah, totally." Ron rubbed his nose bridge, while hiding the sphere in the pocket.
"Mom said to get you downstairs for a dinner." Jim said.
"We are having pizzas today! Extra cheese." Tim said.
"How many layers?" Ron's really empty tummy rumbled.
"Four." twins said grinning.
With a speed of lightning, all three of them dashed downstairs, following alluring scent of pizza. Boys devoured the dish like a pack of hungry wolves, with cheese remains smeared all over their faces. Ann was going to comment on their table manners, however dropped the issue seeing her husband in the same state. Stomachs were filled to the brim, leaving a satisfying discomfort. Twins noticed last two slices of pizza in one of them and smiled mischievously. Before their grabby hands reached it, Ann closed the box and moved it to the fridge.
"Boys, i told you that this is for Kim." she said, closing the fridge door. "She might be hungry after the party."
"Aw come on!" twins whined in protest.
"Kim's not gonna eat it today anyway." Jim pointed out.
"And she's probably on diet too." Tim tried to reason.
"There is always tomorrow." James Possible, siting with his belt unbuckled, pointed out. "Yesterday's pizza is still a pizza."
Ron nodded in agreeing with those words, but kept silent. He really enjoyed evening like that. Honestly, he barely felt as outsider in the Possible house. They are a second family for him. And that is why his decision shouldn't be as difficult as it is. And still he couldn't make a choice. After letting pizza to set down a bit, he went back to his room and turned up the computer. Maybe a little distraction was what he needed now, videogame would fit the bill.
Ann, just as she said, picked up her daughter from the party at 23 p.m. straight. All the cheering and dancing, despite being really fun, drain Kim's energy. She changed into her pajama as soon as she got to her room and dropped on her bed, falling asleep. Several hours later however, nature called. She lifted her body from the soft covers of her bed and went to the toilet. After that, she slowly walked back upstairs, trying to not be noisy. As she reached her room, she noticed a light coming from the slightly open door to Ron's room. Out of curiosity she sneaked up to it and looked through a crack in the door. She saw Ron, slouching over keyboard. However, what made Kim a bit concerned was that he didn't really do anything. He didn't push any keys on keyboard or mouse, but his both hands were laying on them. And the look on his face was absent, like he wasn't really looking at the screen, while facing it.
"Hey." Kim knocked softly at the door and slid her way in.
"Uh…" Ron turned his head towards the sound, realizing who came in second later. "You are back. How was the party?"
"It was fun, and i got back hours ago actually." Kim sat at his bed and pointed at the digital clock at his desk.
"What? Oh…." he saw the time on the display, 2:42. "Time flies, he he."
"Ron, about the football game…"
"I've heard we won, congratulations!" Ron said sincerely.
"Thanks. You know we if it wasn't for you we probably wouldn't win."
"Me?"
"Yeah, you see…" she said a bit sheepishly. "I met someone from Lowerton who asked about you. And, I kinda know everything about what happened with you at your old school and in a fit of anger i sorta inspired our team to beat the other one to the dust and humiliate the hell out of them."
"Kim." Ron felt a little short on words here.
"Listen, I'm really sorry about everything…"
"You don't have anything to apologize for, really, and didn't we have this conversation before?" Ron pointed out.
"Yes, but I didn't see the whole picture back then. I mean, no wonder you told Bonnie about all that and not me."
"What? How do you…"
"Her snapping on me seems logical assuming she does." Kim shrugged her shoulders.
"Oh yeah, forgot you are smart."
"Hey!" Kim had an insulted tone. "What's that supposed to mean?"
"Nothing!" Ron put his hands up defensively.
"Anyway." she rolled her eyes. "A girl named Megan, from cheerleading team, felt guilty I guess and asked me about you, i asked back and learned about how they all treated you. Then i got really mad and in result their team got crushed, badly."
"Meg, huh. Weird." Ron scratched the back of his head. "I don't think she has anything to be guilty about."
"She probably feels guilty because she didn't do anything when you needed some help." Kim sighed. "I can relate to that to some degree."
"Please, don't be. The last thing I want is to worry any of you."
"Well you should!" Kim said, trying to keep her voice quiet enough. "We do worry about you, you know. Both Mom and Dad, and me too. I mean, you don't talk with us about this stuff at all."
"Sorry." his head lowered.
"Well, if you sorry, how about telling me what gloats you now?"
"It's nothing that serious…"
"Come on Ron, you don't look fine at all. I want you to trust us with this."
"Kim it's not really…" trying to avoid eye contact his gaze fell on computer screen and suddenly an idea suddenly appeared. "It's not really that serious really. I just got stuck in the game. It wants me to do a choice and I don't know what to do."
"Really? A game?" she raised an eyebrow. "Alright, what the choice is?"
"You really wanna know?"
"Sure, if it will help you to learn to talk with us. I'm not really into games but who knows, I might help."
"Ok then… You see, the character i play as currently resides in a certain village. Soon the villagers became like second family to him, they helped him a lot. But one day he met a… wizard in woods nearby and befriended him. They became really close, but a problem appeared soon after. Wherever wizard is his enemies appear, and if the characters keep being friends with wizard those enemies might attack the village, and I don't think i have enough strength to protect them all. And currently I'm on the breaking point. Either betray the wizard and leave him alone with this enemies, or stand by his side but possibly endanger village folk."
"Honestly I would choose a village. I mean if this wizard is truly your character's friend I bet he would understand this and move away from the village."
"Well, I can't just leave wizard on his own you know."
"It's a game right? Can't your character get stronger to do both?"
"I wish he could." he said with sadness.
"I stay on my decision then. If the village is like a family for him that is what should take priority. However I still think there should be a third option to help both. Your character is weak."
"Yes he is." Ron admitted his own limitations. "Thank you Kim. Really."
"No problem, you can talk to me any time if you want, even in school. Just so you know it." she let out a sudden yawn.
"Looks like you're dozing off." Ron chuckled. "Guess it's time to hit the hay."
"Yeah. G'night." Kim slowly stood from his bed, waved weakly and walked out the room.
"Good night." he said back, saved his game and turned off the computer.
It was way past the noon. Bonnie's room was still in shambles. She herself was sitting at her bed, knees touching her chin with one hand hugging them. Other hand periodically pushed a button to lit up her phone's display. With each push, an already small hope in heart was shrinking even more. A small voice in her head was telling her that Ron would already called or texted her if he still have any memories of them left. Holding phone in her head she stood before vanity mirror and, after looking at herself, took the comb and brushed herself halfheartedly. She looked tired, with eyes puffy from all that crying. Soon she walked down the stairs into the kitchen, filling a bowl with cereal and milk and munching it slowly, keeping eyes on the cellphone she put nearby again.
Soon Mr. Rockwaller appeared at the kitchen as well. His daughter, however, wasn't there anymore, only a dirty bowl in a sink and her phone on the table. He heard footsteps going down the stairs. Bonnie was dressed as usual, jeans, shirt, a light jacket on top and sneakers.
"I'm going for a walk." she muttered without even looking at him.
"Wait, you forgot your…" in a midst of his sentence he could hear as front door opened and closed. "…phone."
Feeling heavy on the heart, Ryan let a heavy sigh and turned on an electric kettle. The last time he got this treatment was with Connie and Lonnie, when they used their magic to punish some A-grade asswipe, as they themselves described that person. He had to punish them, and they felt it was unfair. It took a good week and a stern talk with their mother to clear it up. But she was not around to help him anymore.
As a cup of his favorite tea was done, a doorbell got his attention. Thinking that maybe Bonnie forgot her keys, he immediately went to front door to open it, holding a cup in his hand. To his surprise the one who stood on the porch wasn't his daughter.
"Hey Mr. Rockwaller." Ron said, panting and out of breath and waved weakly. "You know there's a house down the block, looks really like yours, but with a really angry dog without a leash on."
"I'm pretty sure Mrs. Stepford had a poodle." Ryan was slightly taken aback by this.
"It's a fluffy demon!" Ron gulped.
"Come in Ron. It looks like we have a thing to discuss."
"Is Bonnie…"
"She's out." Ryan interrupted him mid-sentence. "We will speak one on one."
Ryan lead Ron in oh so familiar study. He sat behind his desk as boy dropped down in front of him on the soft comfortable chair. Ryan made a sip from the cup, watching boy's reaction. To his surprise, he was just sitting, a bit slouching. Anxious, yes, but not terrified. The fear he used to see in his eyes somewhat dimmed.
"I see you didn't use Morgana's tear." Ryan slowly put a cup on the desk. "Care to tell me why?"
"It felt wrong." Ron said straightly. "Like major wrong."
"Can you elaborate this? What do you mean by major wrong."
"Well. I couldn't really choose between forgetting Bonnie or staying like this and get myself and/or Possibles in danger. On one hand it should be no brainer, they did everything they can to support me, they house and feed me, honestly care about me, so they must be the top priority."
Ron made a short pause, gathering his thoughts.
"But." he continued. "Even with my head wiped…ehm, shielded, there is still a chance they might encounter something from your side, right?"
"True, there is always chance." Ryan nodded reluctantly. "However moving you away from us would significantly lower the odds."
"So i've thought… if anything would happen it would be better if i knew what i deal with." Ron continued, still holding on the courage he gathered on the way here, supported by adrenalin in his system from previous encounter with a poodle. "And also, Bonnie… she's my friend i don't want her to deal with monster and curses all alone. And let's be honest here, she is stubborn enough to face something on her own, and…i don't want her to be hurt. I feel that for both her and Possibles would be better if i kept going like i did this month in a half. I… i know i can't do much, but i'm willing to learn. This is my reasons, Mr. Rockaller."
Ryan stood from the desk, slowly walked to Ron, his each steps echoing loudly in boy's chest.
"Give me sphere." Ryan reached his hand.
Ron quietly pulled Morgana's tear from his pocked and handed it to the intimidating man.
"If you get hurt both Bonnie and the family of yours would worry. If Bonnie is hurt you and i will blame yourself for that. If anyone Possibles got hurt both Bonnie and you will feel guilty. These are consequences of the decision you are going to make. Do you understand this?" Ryan looked directly at boy's eyes.
Couple seconds passed in silence.
"Yes." Ron finally answered, looking back at him with all confidence he could muster.
"I see." Ryan leaned at his desk. "Month and a half ago i made the decision that was considered by me as a mistake. Starting today, however, i'm going to give you a chance to prove me wrong. I won't use Morgana's tear on you. Yet. You can keep being assistance to Bonnie, now on your own will."
"Booyah!" Ron's exclaimed, instantly catching himself on that. "I… i mean, thank you very much for that chance."
"We'll discuss details later. I think you have a much more urgent task on hand." Ryan put the item on the desk and raised his hand. "And in all off days she forgot her phone today.Summon Eye of Beholder show me sight beyond sight."
Several flying eyes with bat wings, bade fully of white smoke, appeared in the air.
"Search for Bonnie.Sight activate." Ryan's irises turned grey-ish white.
Smoke creature disappeared in thin air. Ron just sat quietly, observing actions of the experienced witch.
"She shouldn't be that far off…" Ryan mumbled. "Found her. Sight deactivate."
Ryan took off his glasses and massaged his eyes with thumb and point finger. Watching through several points of view moving with incredible speed all at once could be straining.
"She is on the children's playground. Down the road, near convenience store."
"I think i know the place, thanks!" Ron ran off the room in instance.
Slowly rocking the swings back and force, with her eye fixated on a particular patch of dirt, Bonnie tried to muffle her feels. She cried herself to sleep last night, and barely held the tears today as hope drained from her faster and faster. She didn't know why she decided to come here of all places, it reminded her of him after all, but somehow she only wanted to be here right now. Even sounds of running stomps behind her back and heavy rapid breathing haven't took her off her daze completely.
"B-b…" someone trying to speak through the panting.
Her ears perked up, noticing familiar voice. She rose from the swings and turned her head to see a blond boy, all sweaty and out of breath.
"B-Bonnie…" Ron finally managed to say, honestly he never ran so much in his life.
Before he could say anything else, Bonnie launched at him with a bone crushing hug. Sadly, Ron wasn't really athletic and all this running began to take its toll. He lost his balance, the fell in a sandbox, crushing a sandcastle.
"Bon- Bonnie...I… i need air…Ow!" Ron felt as Bonnie's hand hit his arm.
It wasn't particularly hard, but his body was on its limits.
"You could call or text me! Do you have any idea how i felt today you jerk!" she said through sniffling as tears appeared in her eyes again.
"Sorry, sorry." Ron put his hands up defensively. "I my defense i woke up late and my phone's battery was dead. So i ran straight to your house, but you wasn't there, so i talked to your dad, he agreed to let me stay with you as we were before and told me where to find you."
"He agreed…" Bonnie couldn't believe her ears. "How?"
"Don't know, i just said what was on my mind at that point." Ron tried to move from sand, but his attempts proved to be futile. "Ehm, Bonnie, can you help me stand? Everything hurts, ow."
Now grinning happily, she picked him up from the sand, and helped him move to the swing. He didn't asked him about details of the talk he and her father had, honestly it didn't matter for her that much at the moment. What was important that he was here, beside her. With his usual goofy smile.
"Oof, i think i need to go home now. Maybe Mrs. Possible or Kim has something for my legs, and arms, and torso..." Ron whined. "Note to myself, start morning jogging."
"Sounds fun, mind if i join?" Bonnie asked.
"Sure, but i need at least month to heal this up before running again."
"Need help getting home?"
"Nah, i think i can feel my right leg again. See ya tomorrow."
Before Ron went his way, Bonnie ran up to him and gave a short hug.
"Thank you Ron." she said, and
Bonnie walked home soon after. Her father was sitting on a sofa with a book and a cup of tea. They didn't fight often. Usually fights were very one-sided, and was about his bad habits of forgetting to eat while researching another manuscript. In all those cases Bonnie was right. Not this time though. This time they both had things they regretted.
"I'm…sorry." Bonnie said, with her head lowered. "I, might've been overreacted…a bit."
"I'm sorry too BonBon." Ryan said. "I shouldn't put you in such situation in a first place. You've got a very interesting friend, by the way. Weird, but interesting."
"I know." Bonnie smiled, as she heard a word friend.
"Oh, and Bonnie."
"Yes?"
"Don't forget to clean your room."
"My room?" she remembered the condition she left it in. "Oh crud…."
A\N To tell you the truth, in july - august i had considered ending this story at this plotpoint. Update rate was and still is much slower than it was with my previous stories, and amount of follower and reviews dropped really low. Last three chapters you have read would be shortened, in one-two chapters and would have more of a bittersweet ending (i think you could guess how this story could turn). However for the last couple months suddenly amount of followers readers and reviewers jumped. This gave me a kick. I got back to my original plan and reworked the hell out of it. As you can see this story is not finished, to be honest it's only 50-60% done. I have much more planned for it, including many characters(Show characters) appearing in it, some hinted ones getting a role, some that you probably barely remember, and some that you probably already know will appear. The show must go on! This will be my biggest fanfic yet! This does mean however that there won't be any other long stories from me until i am finished with this one. BUT! I am working on several one-shots with two or three being in the same continuity. THANK YOU for all your support! The story continues next year in January, stay tuned for chapter 16!
