Chapter 16

Potential threat

A cool midnight breeze went through a forest area just outside the Tri-City area, reaching all the way to the grass field where a particular RV was parked. Shego inhaled fresh air deeply, stretching her arms and back. She loved nights like this for a very special reason. Her teeth tightened, lips curled in a grin, as two bumps began to rise near her shoulder blades. With a really unpleasant and painful feeling, two large leathery wings ripped through her bodysuit. New appendages spread wide, the pain was gone, making her giddy in anticipation. In one swift motion she leaped upwards. With each full movement of her wings Shego gained more and more height, until she got far enough from the ground to be above the trees.

Stupid rules of stupid Drakken prohibited her from flying during the day and in the populated areas. It will get too much attention he said, they must keep magical and supernatural stuff secret he said. In her opinion he was being a big pansy, however in this still fairly unknown to her world it's better be safe than sorry. On the positive side, things like television and magazines made her residence in this realm and waiting time in between flight sessions much more bearable. And recently discovered internet just added to enjoy of her pastime.

She was diving downwards and rising up to the skies time and time again, circling around doing complex maneuvers, putting her body to the limits. This body, just as this world, was something she needed some time to get used to. The world she came from didn't give her much struggle anymore, she was the strongest, she was on top, unbeatable, unreachable. And compared to these creatures called humans she's still several levels above, for the most part. Witches, mages, warlocks, or whatever they wanted to call themselves possessed powers she never witnessed before, she learned early to not underestimate them. Even Drakken, pathetic and unassuming as he looks, can dish some powerful stuff from times to times. The other kind of humans that she was warned about, but hadn't seen yet, was hunters. Warriors of upmost skill, who are able to kill all kind of intruders from outside worlds.

Shego decided to wrap her flying session up for the night, and, as always, she was doing it with style. She flapped her leathery wings, rising up from the ground as far as possible. At the highest point she looked at the moon above. This half-second of hanging in the air felt much longer that it was. With the gravity dragging her down once again, she breathed out green fire from her mouth and rotated her body. A swirl of emerald blaze plummeted towards the field. As she approached close enough to the ground, her wing spread wide again, as green flames dispersed around her. Her feet gracefully landed on the soft grass, wing began to shrink and getting absorbed into her back. Two tears on the jumpsuit sealed themselves almost instantly, leaving no trace of holes in the cloth. It was very convenient, especially for Drakken, since he don't have to sew it up after her flights anymore. He got several of those special jumpsuits enchanted by the coven of witches that called themselves Fashionistas.

Shego made small steps towards a big moving vehicle she called a home. She pulled a slightly rusty handle and entered inside. She really hoped Drakken won't start his usual nagging about wasting water, since she really needed a shower now. Thankfully a blue-skinned witch, or warlock, as he was often correcting her, was busy enough at the moment, painting a piece of cardboard and some miniature figures. Taking it as a good sign, she quickly made her way behind the shower curtain, tossed her jumpsuit into the laundry basket and cleansed herself from the sweat she worked out during the flight. Several minutes later she dried herself and slipped into a white tank top with a pair of grey sweatpants, and found herself comfortable on the top bunk bed, drifting slowly into the dream.

Last week before the spring break starts. Middleton High students were makings plans already. Soon they will be free, at least for good several days, from shackles of American education system. Cheerleading team captain had her plans straight already, stepping rhythmically towards the launch table where several others cheerleaders were already gathered. Once they saw a highly enthusiastic look on their leader's approaching face they knew what's coming.

"Oh no." Hope instantly paled. "No, no, no…."

"Hey girls!" Kim smiled and put some pamphlets on the table. "You know, since the break is near…"

"NO, nah-ah!" Hope cut her off. "Not this time!"

"Oh come on Hope, it's for a good cause."

Kim ignored a grunt from the brunette cheerleader, and kept her wide smile. It wasn't secret that Kim had an altruistic bone in her. She herself constantly participated in numerous events to help out a fellow human being and the world in general. And before school breaks she tries to round up as much people as she could to join the cause. And considering a good amount of students that owed her a favor or two, she managed to spread them through a lot of places, and leaving them with enough time for themselves as well. But of course there was usually a bigger bunch of less enthusiastic people around.

"I am not going to spend my vacation time behind some smelly counter pouring soup for smelly people again." Hope whipped her hair. "I'm going to a beach house to party up and hook up with some hottie, and you're not going to ruin this for me."

"Don't be such cranky pants." Kim chippered. "I got some fun ones for you all. Like here, who wants to go to the children's center?"

"Oh! Me!" Liz threw both arms in the air, she really liked playing with children. "Jess let's go together, please! It would be, like, so much fun!"

"Fine." Jessica rolled her eyes, accepting her fate. "Someone has to pry you off those little devils."

"There is also an opening for volunteers in a nursing home." Kim pointed on another pamphlet.

"I'd like to go." Tara smiled. "I love hearing stories from old folks."

"If Tara goes, i guess i'll follow." Crystal shrugged off. "I'm living with grandma anyway, so i have some experience or whatever."

"Sweet." Kim nodded. "That leaves us with animal shelter…"

"I'm in." Marcella said, pouring a ginseng tea from thermos into a cup. "Got nothing better to do anyway."

"Great! Now, you are the only one left Hope, so…"

"Nope." Hope instantly covered her eyes with left palm. "I know what you are going to do. You're going to use this weird pity stare of yours on me. Not this time."

"I'm not doing any face right now." Kim said, totally having her Puppy dog pout on.

"Yeah, right. Girls, help me out here."

Kim turned her pleading look towards the rest of the team. Girls, feeling guilty, said no. Hope was going to move her hand, but stopped and kept it on her eyes.

"I'm not going to fell for it again Kim." Hope stood from the table and ran, keeping her face down to not meeting eyes of the redhead.

"Hey wait up!" Kim followed on her trail.

While Kim was chasing her victim, Ron had a battle of his own. He stood still staring at the other student's eyes, catching his stare back. Each one waiting, observing, ready to take an action. The prize was literally a step away from them. Ron's opponent suddenly felt goosebumps on his skin, as he caught another stare on himself, coming from infamous brown-haired girl, sitting at the far away table. Unintentionally, he backed half-step away. Using this chance, Ron dove for a small plate and grabbed it. Red gelatin substance wobbled on it. The other student hanged his head and walk away, to wallow in his own shame. The last portion of cherry jell-o was now taken.

"Here you go!" Ron put a treat in front of Bonnie. "Told you i can get one in time."

"Thanks! Mmm…" she smiled and dug into desert.

"Oh yeah, Kim gave me these." Ron pulled out several pamphlets and tossed it casually at the table. "She's asking if we interested in helping during a spring break."

"Clean parks from garbage, charity carwash…" Bonnie cocked an eyebrow. "Is she trying to clean her karma or something?"

"Nah, it's just how Kim is." Ron waved it off. "She might become somewhat… on a high horse, so to say, in recent years, but in the end she's still Kim. She wanted to fly to the Africa to help Red Cross when she was twelve. It's sweet to see this side of her again."

"Hmm. I see." she hummed, glancing dismissively to the side.

"I was thinking to volunteer with her at kitchen for a poor. Pretty sure that if there any field she'd need my help with, it's the kitchen one. Her cookies could be used as torturing device." he said with a horror on his now paling face, totally oblivious to Bonnie's souring mood.

"Wow, something miss perfect can't do, besides casting spells of course." Bonnie mumbled with more venom than she expected.

"What?" Ron, thankfully, didn't catch her words.

"Eh, nothing, just surprised she can't cook." girl corrected herself.

"She might be a perfectionist, but she' not perfect." Ron shrugged his shoulders, looking through the pamphlets.

Bonnie smirked unintentionally, but stopped a second after. She caught herself on a weird animosity towards Kim that spiked up out of nowhere. Lucky for her, Ron was a little dense to this and didn't notice any of it. Something about Ron talking about Kim just ticked her off. Bonnie didn't want to feel this way, really. It's been only couple days since Ron, by some miracle, managed to convince her father to let him stay with his memories intact. It would be pretty stupid to rock this boat because of petty drama in her own head.

"Damn, she runs fast." Kim said to herself and walked up to their table, putting up a cheery smile. "Bonnie! I see Ron showed you pamphlets already."

"Hello to you too Possible." Bonnie said dryly. "And as fun as all this sounds, i'll be kinda busy at the spring break already. ACTUALLY busy."

It wasn't a lie. She was going to spend most of the time improving her magic, and the rest of it she wanted to spend with Ron or just doing nothing.

"That's ok. Well, maybe you have some friends who'd like too…"

"Seriously Possible?" Bonnie felt anger growing in her throat.

"What? I didn't say anyth….ow…" realization struck Kim, making her cringe, and immediately putting her palms together. "Oh my gosh, sorry, me and my big mouth. I really didn't mean anything like that."

Kim felt like she put her foot in a mouth. She was hoping to have a friendly small talk with Bonnie, to patch things up, but in the end messed things up even more.

Ron meanwhile decided not to get between two girls and sipped sweet sugary drink from a can.

"Whatever." Bonnie breathed out.

"Again i'm really sorry."

"It's fine. Anyway, IF i will get some free time for it, i'll just call Ron."

"This will work." Kim perked up again. "Ron, can you tell Mom i'll be a bit late for a dinner?"

Ron gave her thumbs up with a free hand. Kim nodded back to him and walked off into the crowd.

"That went better than i expected." Ron was grinning ear to ear.

"Oh shut up." Bonnie rolled her eyes and finished her jell-o.

Ryan loosened his tie. His was sitting in his office, with couple books opened before him. Near those books lied several talismans he made last night. Sadly, they won't help. To activate those, the user must have at least a drop of magical energy in his body, a spark to start it so to say. And while most of people do possess bare minimum amount of it, Ron had none of that. Boy was physically as far from magic world as possible. And yet by some cruel joke of fate he got right into the middle of it.

Tired from the day of work and from his research, Ryan grab his coat, put books and talismans in the leather suitcase and walked downstairs. He walked by Beatrice, saying goodbye to the elder woman. After starting the car, he drove off to the one place that, he hoped, he could find something for boy to use for defense. Car stopped in front of slightly shabby looking store. At least from the outside. As he entered the place a usual professional, but gentle, smile of lanky old man greeted him from behind the counter.

"Nice to see you today Mr. Rockwaller. How can i help you?" Dominique inquired.

"Good evening. I want to know if you have anything that a normal human can defend himself with against supernatural kind of threat."

"Quite specific. Does this request mean that you decided to keep the boy around?"

"More like he decided it, actually." Ryan sighed. "The boy is stubborn, i must admit."

"Hm. I might have a solution for you, however i cannot guaranty its effectiveness."

"I'm listening."

"That boy has potential Mr. Rockwaller. And that is not just my words. This place was whispering it since he first came through the door."

"The place is whispering that…" Ryan said under his breath, thinking about every piece of information he had about this unusual store, and slid his glasses up the bridge of his nose. "Interesting. But how is it possible? The last of them died ages ago, along with all knowledge."

"Before passing away, my master left this in my hands." Dominique pulled a plain black square box from behind a counter.

"I guess it can't be opened like any other box."

"No, it cannot. Master's last request was to keep this safe until i find someone truly worthy to see his legacy. "

"And you believe Ron is worthy?"

"I do."

"Hm." Ryan thought about it for a minute. "Tomorrow i'll ask Bonnie to bring him here. We let Ron decide this for himself."

"A wise decision Mr. Rockwaller."
