Effie patted her wig on her way to the dining-room car, hoping it wasn't as askew as it felt at that moment. Haymitch had a gift for putting her outfit in disarray and when he was determined to keep her in bed… She had bargained her freedom against a few more hours of sleep for him. They weren't due in Seven until noon anyway but she liked to be on top of things – sometimes literally, as she had just proven to him.

This Tour, she decided, would give her grey hair before her time.

She wasn't expecting Katniss' door to open just after she had passed in front of it. She pursed her lips when she realized it was Peeta. She didn't like the fact that they were sharing a compartment – as she had expressed many many times before. Now if only Haymitch would stop being stubborn and help her talk to them…

"Good morning, dear." she greeted somehow stiffly.

"Good morning, Effie." he mumbled back, a bit flushed.

And she realized why quickly enough. The sweatpants and the large tee-shirt weren't hiding his problem: her tone wasn't the only stiff thing in that corridor.

"Peeta…" she hesitated because it was one thing for rumors to float around – Katniss had sworn they were not sexually active – but it was another thing completely to see proofs of…

The boy cleared his throat, his face crimson, and he shifted awkwardly on his feet. "I need to… Shower. I need a shower."

He was gone in a flash before she could say anything else and maybe it was for the best.

She was ready to bet that, clueless as she was, Katniss hadn't noticed a thing.

She was flushed herself when she reached the dining-room, determined to never mention this encounter again.

Haymitch grumbled under his breath as he made his way to the kids' house for dinner, feeling lonely and miserable for all the wrong reasons. He was happy that the boy was back with them in Twelve but now… Well, he missed Effie. He didn't dare call her and he missed the sound of her voice so badly

He had adopted geese.

That was how much he missed her. He needed to fill his time with something that wasn't related to the kids or his yearning for her so he had adopted geese.

And now he spent his days trying to build a pen when he wasn't drinking and he made dinner for Katniss and Peeta when it was his turn to have them over. Or he went over to their house when it was theirs, like that very night.

The front door wasn't locked and he rolled his eyes, ready to remind them yet again that while the war was over, some carefulness wouldn't go amiss. And, yeah, he knew it was hypocritical given his own tendency to leave his door open.

The sounds hit him as soon as he stepped inside the house and he froze.

As much as he would have liked to pretend not to understand, those sighs and quiet breathy noises couldn't be mistaken.

He immediately stepped back out and closed the door, staring at the wood for a second, both annoyed and amused.

In the end, he shook his head and headed back home.

Now, he felt even more lonely and miserable.

Effie's hand brushed against Haymitch's with every step. Their little fingers entwined once, making her duck her head and smile as if she was a teenager. He smirked at her knowingly.

She had learned to love strolling in Twelve's streets. It was certainly completely different from the city but… It felt like home now. She had been staying there for a few months and she was so happy she thought she could burst.

"Looks empty." Haymitch observed as they reached the bakery.

"Peeta told me to come over after closing time." she frowned, trying the door. While the "closed" sign was hanging in plain sight, the door gave in. She flashed him a triumphant smile. "See? He must be in the kitchen."

She walked in without thinking twice about it.

"Sweetheart…" Haymitch tried to warn her, his voice strangely strangled.

She didn't stop to listen to what he had to say and she strolled into the back area of the bakery. She was ready for anything but finding the children…

"Oh dear!" she exclaimed, loudly enough that Katniss jumped off the counter and straightened her clothes, red like a tomato.

Truth be told, she didn't know who was the reddest in that kitchen.

Haymitch, she noticed, had wisely remained in the main part of the bakery.

"My… my apologies." she sputtered, fleeing before she could see anything she didn't want to see.

Haymitch was leaning against the counter, a scowl on his face. One look at her was enough to confirm his suspicions, it seemed, and he followed her out. They were a few feet away when he started chuckling.

"Let's be honest, sweetheart…" he said "If I had a bakery, I'd probably fuck you in the kitchen every day."

Effie laughed softly when Haymitch pressed her against the side of the house, burying her fingers in his hair as his mouth ran down her throat. Coming to Four had been a good idea. She was loving those holidays.

They had sneaked out almost half an hour earlier for a nightly stroll on the beach – that had ended up with them having sex between two dunes – and they were in no hurry to go back inside Annie's house now. They were fooling around like idiots.

The sound of giggling made them froze and they automatically retreated to the shadows, watching as the children escaped the house, kissing, and hands clearly wandering under their clothes. Haymitch groaned and Effie grabbed his face and drew him back in a kiss to distract him from a spectacle he would rather just ignore.

She was pretty sure Katniss had a hand inside Peeta's pants.

"They could keep it to their room." Haymitch grumbled against her lips once the sound of the children's kissing had faded in the distance.

She didn't know if they would make the same use of the beach they had just done – somehow, it didn't really seem like Katniss but who knew who anyone was like behind closed doors? – but she was very sure the less they would know the better.

"They want to enjoy the night. Like we just did." she chided him, stealing another kiss. "They are young and they should."

"They should do it where I can't see it." he insisted, nibbling on the soft spot under her jaw.

"How many times did they walk in on us?" she retorted, letting her head fall back.

"Different." he snorted. "They should learn to knock."

She didn't object to that.

It was, after all, very true.

Haymitch plucked the woolen hat off her head and she flashed a bright smile at him, heading straight to the living-room without even removing her coat, in a hurry to warm herself by the fire.

Clearly Haymitch wasn't expecting her to stop on the threshold because he walked right into her, almost knocking her off.

"The fuck are you doing?" he asked only to groan when he spotted the reason why she had stopped. "Seriously, kids? On our couch?"

Peeta barely stopped kissing Katniss long enough to look up. "Since you did it in our bathroom last week, I didn't know we had that kind of boundaries."

The making-out session seemed heavy and Effie was a little bit scared the children would go all the way to prove their point.

"Lesson learned." she offered as a peace offering. "There will be no more kissing in your bathroom."

"Wasn't just kissing." Haymitch muttered, forcing her to elbow him.

"Now, please, stop defiling my couch." she insisted.

Who knew children were so difficult?
