Prompt: Just rereading this and thought of another story. What about after K/P's first child is born (maybe even toddler age) Effie and aymitch realize they're grandparents?

Grandparents

Effie perched on the couch's armrest, leaning over Haymitch's shoulder to get a better look at the precious bundle in his arms.

"Take her." he immediately whispered, clear panic in his voice.

She glanced at the armchair on which Peeta was asleep with his mouth a little open and then back at the baby who was so serenely staring up at Haymitch as if he held the answers to all the questions in the universe. Willow was drooling a little and she was so adorable

Four days and their whole lives had already rearranged around her.

"She looks so comfortable." Effie hummed, making sure to keep her voice low. "You are doing just fine."

Haymitch had been afraid of holding her from the very start but the children wouldn't hear about his stupid self-loathing remarks about how he would taint her or such nonsense. The fact that he was afraid of dropping her was more concerning but they had quickly asserted that fear was unfounded. His hands weren't the steadiest but they were steady enough to carry a child when he was sitting down.

And Willow did so love being in his arms…

"The girl?" he asked, his eyes darting to Peeta who had shifted in the armchair at the sound of his voice.

She wondered when he would stop referring to Katniss as the girl, if he ever would really… The Mockingjay was in her thirties now after all, truly not a girl anymore…

"She fell asleep too." she confirmed, smiling down at the baby. "She is so beautiful…"

There was a yearning in there she didn't bother to hide. It was a small regret that they never had any babies of their own but they shared two wonderful children and that was more than she had thought she would ever have.

"Looks like Katniss." He smiled a genuine soft smile that she didn't get to see often. "She's got the boy's nose though."

"And his ears." she concurred. "I am utterly in love with her, you realize."

He chuckled, growing confident enough to transfer Willow's little weight in the crook of his left arm so he could stroke her cheek with his free hand. "Yeah… Sorry… Me too."

Effie pressed a kiss against his cheek and started making faces at the baby who didn't seem to care much about it.

"Katniss is referring to me as Grandma." she told him. "I never thought I would be a grandmother. It is… weird. I do not feel that old."

"You ain't old." he snorted. "But it's… good, yeah? I mean… When they started saying grandpa I kind of…"

"Panicked?" she teased.

"Yeah." he admitted. "But…" He chuckled and it sounded pure, devoid of any of the demons that often haunted him still. "They trust us enough to be her grandparents. We're her grandparents. Can you believe that?"

She leaned a little against him and caressed Willow's little hand. "It is wonderful. She is wonderful."

And that was a gift she would never take for granted, she vowed.
