(Young Arthur has appeared previously in December challenges, recruited to the Irregulars in a poem posted on 6th December 2012...Felons and Festive Fripperies. He ages very slowly:-p)

Ginger

Arthur waits his turn, politely,

Mrs H in charge, quite rightly,

Tea towels wrapped as aprons, tightly;

Baking gingerbread.

~0~

Urchins' hands are close inspected

One or two are thus rejected;

Soap required, not unexpected;

Baking gingerbread.

~0~

Flour and spice and eggs to measure,

Warmth and light and cheer to treasure,

Make the most of simple pleasure;

Baking gingerbread

~0~

Wooden spoons on table clatter,

Bowls tip over, contents splatter,

Cloths supplied to mop spilled batter;

Baking gingerbread

~0~

World outside is dark and dreary,

Urchins often cold and weary,

But, for now, their world is cheery;

Baking gingerbread.

~0~

Scents from oven, most enticing,

Mrs H prepares the icing,

Usual neatness sacrificing;

Baking gingerbread.

~0~

Biscuit men are allocated,

Little characters created,

Colour schemes and "clothes" debated;

Baking gingerbread.

~0~

In the parlour; cocoa steaming,

Firelight on small faces, gleaming,

Proud and happy cooks are beaming;

Baking gingerbread.
