Chapter 2.
Walking into the house, JJ felt a sudden coldness hit her skin she hadn't stepped in this house in 12 long years. Hearing noises from the kitchen, JJ made her way into the room, smiling at Henry stuffing his face with Christmas cookies.
"Henry," JJ said raising her brow.
"But mommy" He huffed.
JJ shook her head. "Cookies after lunch ok"
Henry nodded, looking at his nanna
"You heard mommy, we will save these for later." Sandy winked at her grandson
"So what's for lunch?" JJ asked taking a seat at the table.
"Well, I thought we could head to my place" Sandy smiled.
"Right, the bakery you bought," JJ said looking at her mother.
"Watch your tone" Sandy raised her brow.
"I didn't mean anything by it mom," JJ said looking at her.
"C'mon buddy let's get our coats," JJ said walking Henry out of the room.
"Wait," JJ said as they stood outside the Bakery "This used to be that diner place?"
Sandy nodded. "Yep, ok you two welcome to Sandy's bakery"
"Wow," Henry said looking around.
"Go pick a booth buddy" JJ smiled looking around at the place.
"Mom," JJ said stunned
"Not what you were expecting?" She smiled at her daughter
"No, definitely not" JJ laughed.
"Sit, I'll get coffee and menus" Sandy smiled.
"Do you do special coffee?" JJ asked.
"One coffee double the maple syrup coming up" Sandy winked at her.
Sitting down next to Henry, JJ helped him set up the coloring paper and pencils that were provided on the table.
"Mommy place cool," Henry said grabbing the coloring pencils
"You think so little man," JJ said ruffling his hair.
Walking into the kitchen, Sandy started making coffee's seeing a man laid on the floor, his head busy stook inside the oven.
"Ah William, you're here" Sandy smiled, Noticing the man working on her broken oven
"That I am Sandy" Will smiled at her.
William LaMontagne Jr was the go-to handyman of the town, e could fix anything you needed his muscular body and charming looks were just a few great things about the young Gentlemen he was.
"Does it need much?" She asked.
"I'm trying my best, but you definitely need to get it replaced" He spoke
"Ok, well, 'll be out front when you're done" Sandy smiled.
Eating her sandwich, JJ watched Henry closely, "You done little man?"
Nodding, Henry picked back up the coloring pencils. "Mommy help finish?"
JJ smiled picking up the pencil helping him finish his drawing. "Wow look at this" JJ smiled.
Hearing someone come over, JJ looked up seeing a handsome man stood in front of her carrying a toolbox, she was overwhelmed by the size of his muscles his T-shirt and tartan tied around his waist and his jeans hung nicely, he was fashionable, that caught JJ's eye.
"All done" He smiled.
"Perfect, I don't know what I would do without you" Sandy spoke
"Well do me a favor, Get a new oven, It's on its last legs" He smiled.
JJ laughed to herself trying to avoid eye contact with the man
"Oh, William, you remember Jennifer," Sandy said watching them both.
JJ went to speak. "Hey"
"You look good JJ" He smiled at her softly.
JJ blushed, running her hands through Henry's hair "So do you" she smiled.
"Listen, call me if you need anything else, I better get going got a list of jobs to get done today," Will said softly.
"Of course bye William" Sandy smiled.
JJ watched as he left, he was definitely way hotter than she had remembered but it had been 10 long years since she last saw him.
"Will's a handyman?" JJ asked causally.
"He's the fixer around here has his own carpenter business but also the local handyman," Sandy said.
JJ nodded. "wow last time I saw him He was heading to law school."
"And he did, he's a lawyer but after his mom past he decided to give that up and help out around town" Sandy sipped her coffee
JJ looked at her.
"What?" Sandy eyed her daughter.
"Nothing, nothing at all" JJ said putting her focus back on Henry.
"I'm going to take him back to the house, wind down, and unpack," JJ said getting up.
"I'll be home for dinner" Sandy smiled
Leaving the bakery JJ took hold of Henry's hand as they walked down the street. She had to admit to herself been home may not be that bad after all.
As he loaded up his truck, Will watched from across the road as JJ left the diner with who he could only guess was her son.
"She looks good," he thought to himself.
/
As the next morning came around, JJ looked at the clock seeing the time, knowing Henry would sleep a little longer, she slowly climbed out of bed, grabbing the dressing gown she left the room. Wondering down the hallway she stopped at the door, tracing her fingers over the R sign on the door. Taking a breath she pushed open the door open. It hadn't changed one bit, not since JJ last came in here. Sitting down on the bed, JJ grabbed the stuffed teddy bear taking in its scent.
"I miss her too you know," Sandy said from the doorway.
JJ looked at her, putting the teddy down. "I know," she whispered.
"You should go visit her today," Sandy spoke.
JJ licked her lips, "Can you watch Henry for a bit?" She asked.
"Of course" Sandy nodded.
JJ stood up, placing the teddy back, closing the door as she left the room. JJ knew going to visit her grave was going to bring back some horrible memories but deep down she hoped it would give her some closure too.
"Thanks again mom," JJ said pulling on her coat.
"Take all the time you need, Henry and I will be baking cookies all day. Sandy smiled.
JJ nodded, giving her mom a soft smile
Walking into the graveyard, JJ noticed it had started to snow. Zipping up her coat, JJ adjusted herself to get warm. Walking over to the grave she stopped taking a deep breath.
"Ros" she whispered.
"I missed you" JJ let out a laugh. "Hell you already know that"
Bending down, JJ placed the fresh flowers down. "It's snowing, I know how much you loved the snow" JJ felt a tear roll down her cheek.
"When you used to wake me up in the middle of the night we would go make snowmen and mom would come to bring us hot chocolate at like three in the morning"
"I'm sorry,I haven't been here, I just I couldn't come back it was too hard, losing you, dad leaving losing my best friend.." JJ paused. "Now look at me I'm here I'm a mess but I'm going to try for me for mom, for Henry, he's loving it here"
Wiping her eyes, JJ took a deep breath.
"JJ" He spoke.
Turning around JJ wiped her eyes seeing Will.
"Will" She whispered.
"You ok?" he asked softly.
JJ nodded, noticing the flowers in his hand. "Are they for Ros?"
Will nodded, laying them down next to hers "Yeah, I like to bring Ros and my parents a fresh bunch every week"
JJ smiled. "Thank you"
Will smiled at her. "You can talk about it if you want." He said
JJ nodded, "It's the first time I've been back here since I left" JJ looked at him.
Will nodded, "And all those memories and feelings are coming back"
JJ nodded, "You got it" JJ sighed.
"Well, maybe it's time to make some new memories, with that little boy of yours" Will spoke.
JJ looked at him, "How did you know?"
"He looks just like you JJ" He smiled.
JJ nodded, "I guess"
"You want a ride, that snow is starting to really come down" Will offered
JJ nodded, "How about a coffee on me?"
"That sounds good" Will smiled
/
Walking into the Bakery, JJ took off her coat handing it to Will. "Thanks" JJ smiled softly, pulling her hat off her head.
"So what you think your mom has him doing?" Will asked.
"My guess, eating endless cookies" JJ smiled.
"I'll go get us a booth" Will smiled at her.
"I'll be over in a few" JJ smiled heading into the back of the Bakery.
"Wow, what's been going on in here?" JJ asked
"MOMMY!" Henry ran over hugging her leg.
"Easy buddy you're covered in flour" JJ laughed.
Henry giggled, "Mommy I sit with you"
"Mommy is having lunch with a friend so you have to be on your best behavior," JJ said picking him up.
"Ok mommy," Henry said
"Coffee with a friend?" Sandy asked.
"Will, I bumped into him at the graveyard," JJ said watching as Henry laid his head on her shoulder
"I'll make you all some pie" Sandy smiled.
Walking over to the booth, JJ sat down watching as Henry laid down his head in her lap, "Sorry he's tired" JJ said running her hand through his hair.
"He's cute what's his name?" Will asked looking at her.
"Henry" JJ smiled softly.
"He's what three ?" Will asked trying not to cross any boundaries
"Just turned four" JJ smiled, "He's very mature and smart for his age," JJ said looking down at him.
"Being a mom looks good on you JJ" Will smiled.
JJ blushed, "No one has called me that in years"
Will smiled widely. "Still the best nickname"
JJ laughed, "Yeah, so what about you?"
Will sipped his coffee "What about me?"
"The last time I saw you, you were at Law School Making it big in the world, now you're here" JJ looked at him.
Will laughed " It wasn't for me, now here I am single, helping out all the old folks in town. guess I haven't really found the one yet."
JJ nodded, "Yeah I know that feeling"
"Really?" Will asked shocked.
JJ tucked up her hair behind her ears " Guess I never found the one either " JJ laughed a little.
"You want a ride home?" Will asked looking at Henry
"Yeah that would be great" JJ smiled.
"I'll get him, you grab that Cherry pie from your mom" Will smiled
"We have ice cream at the house" JJ smiled.
"Now you're talking" Will smiled widely.
Picking up Henry, Will made his way out to the truck, Will watched as JJ climbed in taking Henry into her lap.
/
"He's asleep for a little while at least," JJ said walking into the kitchen
Will nodded, scooping the ice cream into the dish "Hope you don't mind"
JJ smiled, "It needs more ice cream"
Will smiled, adding an extra scoop handing JJ the bowl
"Remember when we used to this?" Will asked.
JJ smiled, "Those were the days" she took a mouth full
"You know we all missed you around here" Will watched her.
JJ nodded, "I know, I just" she paused.
"I get it" Will sighed.
"You do?" JJ questioned
"JJ" Will sighed.
"I know I hurt you" She whispered.
"We hurt each other." Will looked at her.
JJ nodded, looking at him. "Thanks again for your help.
Will nodded, "I'll see you around JJ "
"Well we're here till the new year," JJ said.
Will nodded. "See ya"
After Will left, JJ made her way upstairs, climbing in bed next to Henry, she grabbed the photo from the bedside table, taking a good look she remembered the photo of herself and Will at prom.
"I guess you were always the one" She whispered to herself.
