It had been several days since the new snack rules had been introduced and so far, the girls had complied and the mutiny that she had predicted was yet to happen. But a storm was brewing and they were just biding their time which was scarier the not knowing when they could strike.
Sitting on the sofa Kate pulled her legs up, sipping her coffee. It was a miserable Saturday afternoon and the girls were supposed to be tidying their rooms although she suspected they were spending most of the time playing with things they had found underneath all the rubbish that was in their rooms. She also suspected that the washing basket would be full several times over.
Sighing she walked in to the kitchen putting the cup in to the sink. She was debating whether or not to make another coffee or wait when there was a knock at the door. Taken aback slightly as she wasn't expecting anything. Opening the door, she saw a huge box sat on the doorstep, lifting it up it was actually heavy waving her hand at the delivery driver in thanks she carried it in to the house kicking the door shut behind her.
the box was addressed to her but she didn't remember ordering anything and defiantly nothing this big.
"Mike?" she called walking in to the office. "did you order anything off my Amazon?" she asked placing the box on the side
"no." he said turning
"Are you sure?" she asked
"yes positive. I would have told you if I had" Mike said turning in his chair.
"well this has just arrived and I know I didn't order anything"
"are you sure that you didn't get Pissed and forget you ordered something again"
"i did that once. And when have I been that paracletic. I have had one maybe 2 glasses of wine since we have been in lockdown." she said folding her arms
"if you say so" he grinned
"I haven't now shift I need to check something" she said elbowing him out of the way of the computer.
Logging in to her account. It couldn't have been a hack as why would they have the stuff sent to her address. Searching through the order history, the last one placed wasn't hers, it only showed the price the order came to.
"2-50" she muttered "oh god. Open the box" she said turning around
Ripping the thick brown tape off the box and lifting the flaps Kate sighed pushing her way out of the room.
"GRACE! NICOLE! Get down these stairs right now!" she called standing at the bottom of the stairs. Grabbing the box out of the office she carried it in to the kitchen laying the continence on the counter. Boxes of Shapes and packets of Tim-Tams, multi-packets of tiny teddies and lots of lollies among other things. There was enough to feed a army.
"what is it mum?" Nicole asked as she walked in to the kitchen
"you tell me." she indicated to all the stuff. "it arrived this morning. Ordered from my Amazon account. Although funny thing I didn't order any of this stuff. Nor did your father"
"it could be a gift" Grace grinned excitedly.
"nice try but I checked it came from my account and the money has come off my card" she said, "so what I want to know is which one of you ordered it?" she asked trying to keep her cool.
"it wasn't me" Nicole called
"it wasn't me neither" Grace called "maybe it was Chris?" she said in a none helpful, helpful way
"don't you dare blame your brother Grace. I expected better of both of you. This is theft and fraud and I expected better of the both of you. You were raised to be good and honest. So, you will both lose your pocket money until this has been paid back. You get $5 between you so it shouldn't take you more than 2 and a bit years" Kate said
"Mum that is like so unfair I didn't do anything" Nicole protested
"well Nicole it stands and will stand until the guilty party or parties owns up. Now get up to your rooms" she sighed
Looking at the amount that they had ordered she was amazed at it all where were they going to hide it all and also how were they going to intercept the box with her name on. Picking up one of the Freddo frogs she tore the wrapper open biting in to it
"I thought you were giving up chocolate" Mike grinned walking in
"shut up" she grinned
"so, who did it?" he asked grabbing a bag of the cheese and bacon shapes off the counter
"No. They both denied it and Grace even tried to blame Chris" she sighed. "I suppose it will teach me to leave my account logged in and my card details saved for ease when ordering. I just expected better of them" she said tears starting to fall. She had been expecting a revolt but she just thought they would steal from the cupboard and stash them not order their own supply off the internet using her credit cards"
"its not your fault" Mike said sympathetically wrapping his arms around her pulling her in to a hug.
"this is just so hard. It had to be one or both of the girls. Its all snacks and their favourites. I just expected better of them. We did not raise them to behave like this"
"i know" he kissed the top of her head. "so what are we going to do?" he asked as she pulled back slightly
"well I have told them I am stopping their pocket money till they have paid it all back" she said nestling in to his arms. She felt betrayed she had not brought her children up to behave like this. If it was a accident then she could have some sympathy but the invoice clearly showed that everything was a separate item and some had more than one order.
Later that evening Kate sat curled up on the sofa resting her head on mikes shoulder. The atmosphere in the house for the rest of the day had been tense to say the least. The girls still denying everything and protesting their innocence even more so when Mike added being grounded to the list of punishments.
"you okay" Mike whispered
"fine" she smiled looking up at him slightly "I just don't know what happened. Why they would be so dishonest" she sighed
"Kate don't get upset. I think it may just be the lockdown and they are being trying" he said softly
"I know." she forced a smile looking at the clock. "I think I am going to hit the rack" she said standing up.
"I'll be up in a minuet" he smiled "I'll just lock up"
Heading upstairs she looked in to the kid's rooms. They were all asleep. Looking at the girls she wished she knew where her little babies had gone. They both were such sweet little girls but after this stunt she didn't know anymore. One thing was for sure was she was going to get to the bottom of which one of them was the mastermind behind this.
