The morning dragged slowly and painfully and it wasn't even lunch time yet. After a promising start to the day the weather had turned. The sky was dark and stormy with huge black clouds rolling in of the sea threatening to dump their continence over the city. Thankfully Grace and Nicole were getting on and knuckling down and getting on with their school work.

Pulling the laptop towards her Kate logged in to check her emails. Typically, the only new ones she had received were Facebook notifications saying that someone had posted on one of the groups she was part of, or they were spam emails telling her she had inherited a zillion million dollars from a prince in some tiny little country no one had ever heard of. Sighing she was annoyed as she was always so careful as to who she gave out the email address to as it was a personal one. Deleting the Facebook emails and marking the others as spam she shut the computer down. Heading in to the kitchen she began to make a start on lunch. She took Chris with her who had been playing with his cars on the carpet in front of her. Sitting him at the table with a couple of cars she headed to the work surfaces.

it was only going to be sandwiches but with her kids it needed to be planned like a Military operation. Each of the children wanted a different filling and cut in a different way. Chris would only eat jam sandwiches with the crusts cut off and cut in to squares, Grace loved cheese, vegemite and banana sandwiches toasted and cut in to triangles and Nicole liked a simple cheese sandwich with no mayo and only a little bit of butter. The only one common thing they had was they all wanted it on white bread.

Starting with Graces, she sighed she had no idea where her daughter's unusual tastes in food had come from. Saying that when she was pregnant with Grace, she did love ice cream on toast so who knows. Thankfully the other two were far simpler to prepare and she could do them whilst Graces was toasting. Adding a few crisps to each plate

"Lunch" Kate smiled carrying the three plates over to the table. Grace and Nicole looked up from their work grateful it was lunch time as that meant they didn't have to do any more work till tomorrow.

Taking the cars from Chris before she placed his plate in front of him, he wailed reaching out for the cars.

"eat your jammy sandwich then you can have your car-car back" she smiled at him as he grabbed the first square, getting jam all around his face. Shaking her head, she walked back over to the kitchen counter.

She had just cut her own sandwich in to quarters when mike walked in half in his uniform half in civvies after all, all of his meetings had been on zoom so it didn't really matter what he was like on the bottom half.

"Hey" she smiled at him as he walked in "finished all your meetings?"

"yeah thankfully nothing much has changed" he said pinching a quarter of her sandwich

"hey" she called as he walked over to the table sitting next to the kids.

Following him over with what was left of her sandwich she also sat next to him.

"so I thought we could take the bikes out again this afternoon" she smiled taking a bite her sandwich

"have you seen the weather?" Mike grinned pinching some of the crisps on her plate.

"oi" she smacked his hand away. "and yes, I have seen the weather but I asked google and it's not going to rain" she smiled a little smugly

"yes, but I saw the weather report and it said it was going to rain" he resorted back

Shaking her head, she looked at him "never believe the weather report, they always get it wrong. You ever heard of Michael Fish?"

"no who's he when he's at home?" Mike asked.

"he was well is this British weather presenter who famously in 1987 said there wasn't going to be a tornado in the UK along the south east, a few hours later the south east of England was hit with the worst storm in 30 years. Some people still take the piss even now" she grinned

"right bike rides it is then" Mike smiled "although if it rains then..."

"then what Captain Flynn" she smirked seeing where his mind was going.

"well you best just hope it doesn't rain" he grinned

Heading out on the bikes the weather was still overcast but dry. As they got in to the park it began to drizzle but the sun was making a appearance over the bay. Taking cover under the bandstand as the rain began to hammer it down, huge fat raindrops bouncing off the ground.

"told you it will rain" Mike grinned whispering in her ear

Turning to face him "shut up" she grinned

Looking out trying to judge whether it was worth the risk it in taking the short ride back home. The rain was still coming down and making no sign of slowing down. Kate just hoped it was a passing shower and not a full-on storm.

"look at that rainbow" Kate smiled as a huge bright rainbow appeared over the park, showing off each of the colours in a vibrant display.

"its a double rainbow look" Mike said pointing towards the beautiful rainbow which had a fainter rainbow just below

"Mike!" Kate said whacking him on his arm playfully "you must never point at a rainbow they don't like it and they disappear!" she said looking out where the rainbow was, it now had sadly faded in to nothingness.

"Kate did you not study physics in high school?"

"yes" she smiled "and I even got an A" she grinned

"then tell me how are rainbows formed" he asked

"fairies who get their cloaks wet hang them to dry" she said winking at Nicole who rolled her eyes at how lame everything was.

"seriously Kate" Mike grinned

"yes" she said looking out. The rain had died down in to a slow drizzle "come on then let get back before it chucks it down again" she said pushing her bike along peddling back in the direction they had just come from.

Thankfully they managed to arrive home before a almighty thunderstorm rolled in making everything go dark and dull. Heading upstairs Kate began rooting around in a box that was stored in the wardrobe.

"Kate?" Mike asked walking in behind her. "what are you looking for?" he asked

"found it" she smiled pulling out a book "come on and I will tell you how rainbows are formed she said walking past him heading down stairs.

Sitting on the sofa she leafed through the book till she found the page she was looking for.

"right" she smiled "this is how rainbows are formed" she smiled clearing her throat

"THE RAINBOW FAIRIES

Two little clouds, one summer's day,

Went flying through the sky;

They went so fast they bumped their heads,

And both began to cry. "

She looked over at Chris who was staring at her inventively hanging on every word she was reading.

She continued

"Old Father Sun looked out and said:

" Oh never mind, my dears,

I'll send my little fairy folk

To dry your falling tears."

One fairy came in violet,

And one wore indigo;

In blue, green, yellow, orange, and red,

They made a pretty row.

They wiped the cloud-tears all away,

And then from out the sky,

Upon a light of sunbeams made,

They hung their gowns to dry."

Closing the book she looked at Mike. "see that is how a rainbow is made and why we always see them after a storm because the clouds have stopped crying" she grinned

"you are absolutely bonkers Kate Flynn" Mike smiled leaning in to kiss her.

so really hope you like this. The rainbow has been a symbol of hope in the UK since we went in to lockdown (I think it has in other countries as well) but it has been a way of showing a united front to out NHS heroes, so I wanted to include one some where in this fic. The story of a rainbow disappearing comes from a joke one of our local radio station DJ's made about 10 years ago (yes I have a weird ass memory but hey. I remember the most random things like the cup I had a hot chocolate in one day 19 years ago) anyway that's where that came from. The poem is one I loved as a kid and I thought it went in this chapter really well. I do not own this poem and have just copied it off google and unfortunately the original poet is unknown but its a beautiful poem. so let me know what you think and huge love to you all . xoxo
