Hey, sorry for the long wait. 2019, I can say without a shadow of a doubt, is one of the worst years of my life. School, Family problems, work, etc. I've been working on this chapter for what seems to be forever. If November and December weren't so busy for me, it would've already been released. I'm sorry for all you who have been here since the beginning and those who have joined along the way. I will try to release far more chapters next year.
Also, I've watched some of Vol 7 and I have to say I like it a lot so far. I will admit, I don't like the new hair cuts, especially considering hair exists to keep you warm in say, places like Atlas where it snow and rains-all the time.
But on another note, if we ever get that far into the story, let's just say Ironwood's methods will very very justified in this AU and the characters will have a very different perspective.
HunterMC: Thanks, I'll try to make the next wait not as long as these two.
Lessrope33: I applaud your inquisitive nature, keep those words in mind because they are a HUGE plot point later on.
R3d-Ga1ns: That was my goal, I wanted to take RWBY, a story that started out innocent and then on a flip of a switch turned dark with Volume 3 and fuse it together properly. I've always been a fan of more realistic grey moral stories like Game of thrones (was) and characters like Guts from Berserk. Another reason why I choose to make this story was to practice world building. RWBY to me, always felt like it lacked in its world and lore, being very simple.
I'm glad people like Umbra, to be honest I designed him to be a darker foil for the whole original eight main characters. His personally isn't going to change instantly, it's going to be roller coaster ride if I'm able to write this story as planned. There's a lot of reasons for the way he acts and his skills and it's all tied to the past. His Relationship with Weiss and Jaune are going to be the most important in the story to be honest. Out of all the characters, he's their biggest foils.
Another S.T.A.L.K.E.R: Trust me, Umbra is going to be one of the most bloodsoaked OCs in RWBY history. This story is going to be Berserk levels of violence as you probably could already tell. Umbra doesn't really cares what others think, more like, he doesn't like being looked at like a circus attraction. He only wants to avenge his love ones and atone for his mistakes, nothing more. I'm glad it's just "simply there", that's how I intended it to be. I didn't want it to be so thin, that people didn't see that or right in the face. I'm glad to hear I achieve what I set out to do.
It's nice to know my grammar for the most part is good too, I'm not exactly an master at writing but thankfully I'm not a novice either, I try my best. Sympathy and Pity are simply just two out of many words I try to use to convey what the characters themselves feel. I don't really know what else to use instead of them when they're needed.
I didn't retcon much except the backstory of Salem and Ozpin and what the Two Borther Gods look like. Them having Dragon forms went along well. Many things still are as they were planned initially, including Umbra's Backstory. I've been working on a lot of lore for Remnant. Religion, National and cultural history. But hey, such is life in the zone.
Chapter 11: First Day, First Blood.
Umbra awoke rather refreshed in his new sleeping bag. After he and Weiss arrived back to the Dorm, the rest of Rwby followed shortly after. He had be surprised when Ruby gave him a gift in the form of a black and red sleeping bag and pillow. He didn't want the comfort of a bed to make him reliant, but he thought that a sleeping bag wasn't too big of a difference when it came to the floor.
Apparently, he was wrong as he felt the best in six months, it made him not want to get up. Groaning as he forced himself up. The others were still asleep as he stood up, swiped his new uniform and shoes from the desk and went to the bathroom. He took a leak and brushed his teeth with a new toothbrush, courtesy of Yang. He looked into the mirror and looked himself in the eyes.
"Tyrfing..."
"Yes Umbra?"
"Was it ok to be in that locker all night?" He asked the Sword mentally, "Get boring?"
"Yes, it was boring and dark, endlessly dark." Tyrfing scoffed, "I hope I don't have to spend a week in here, I'd go crazy."
"Don't worry, If it comes down to it, I'll retrieve you and we'll practice." He then sighed, "Sorry Tyrfing, but I got to take a shower now and focus on today. I'll talk to you later."
"Anytime, Umbra." With that, he was met with silence. He just turned on the faucet and splashed his face with some water. He then took off his clothes, exposing the horrible and ugly scars that branded his body. A sigh escaped his lips as he got in the shower and turned the water on. When the hot water ran down his back over the scars made from the lashings they gave him, he shivered again and fell on his knees.
CRACK!
He shook as he remembered the leather whip striking his back.
CRACK!
Tears formed at the edges of his eyes and the memory of pain stung his mind.
CRACK, CRACK!
"Stop...it..." He said in low whisper.
"Pain is for the weak," A voice of a Man he hated with all his soul entered his mind. "The weak deserve death, as is the will of the Gods."
CRACK, CRACK, CRACK!
"Typhon created the Grimm to weed out the weak and fearful from Men. Those who cry at a sting of a lash deserve to be cast into the wilds with their bones broken for the Grimm to devour. Pain and Fear are just temporary, Victory and Death are forever. Remember this well."
Tears streamed down his face as he remembered the whips shredding his back. He bit his lip for a minute before he stood back up and washed himself and his hair.
Five minutes later...
After getting out of the shower, The Reaper dried himself and put his underwear on. He just looked at the uniform in all its glory and frowned. One look at the shoes and he just tossed them back into the box while grabbing and putting the pants and belt on, they were okay. Then put on and buttoned the white shirt, okay again. The tie...he tried to put it on, but it obviously wasn't how it was supposed to be. Then the jacket, "Not as good as my jacket but it'll do." He said to himself. He walked out of the bathroom and over to his boots, grabbing them he went over to one of the desks and sat, putting them on. When it was all said and done, he pulled out the scroll.
6:56.
He went and looked at the schedule for classes.
9:00.
He rubbed his eyes, "Damn it, two hours of waiting to go." He grabbed his satchel and pulled out his journal. Flipping through the pages, it was like flipping through memories. Until he stopped at entry.
The Last Legion is getting desperate to kill me, almost every town I've stopped at on the way to Mistral has had a Nightblade Assassin in it. Every ally way, every Inn, every road through a forest has one or more watching and waiting to kill me. So far I've killed thirty-two of them.
He looked at the Sleeping teammates of his and sighed. He may have made their assassins back off, but he knows them too well. "They probably have a Champion coming after me again." That didn't bode well for him. A Champion was worth a Hundred Legionaries, the few he fought was some of the hardest fights he had. The only time a Champion turned tail and ran from him was one called Mars Brutalis. A smirk came to his face at the memory of the ruthless "God of War!" Running when he realized that he was outmatched.
Eleven Months Ago, Northen Anima.
The Snow blew through the harsh northern wind as Umbra walked down the barren road. It had been a few days since he left Argus for Mistral, and the road had been quiet. No travelers, no Grimm, no one. He had his hood on and a scarf was wrapped around his neck with it's ends flapping in the cold wind. The sword on his back was his only respite from the barren lonely north. "I think I understand why everyone takes the train to and from Argus." He spoke aloud.
"Well, that option was off the table this time." Tyrfing responded, "They only have a price on your head, the Atleasians, the Last Legion and now that Petty Crime Family In Argus."
"It's not my fault they kiss the Legions ass." The Reaper said as he rubbed his gloved hands for warmth.
"Did you forget? They all do!" The Sword said Mentality.
"I know-" They were interupted by the faint sound of gunfire. Umbra sprinted into the woods, towards the sound. The sounds of automatic fire got louder and louder as he got closer. He ducked behind a tree when he was right by it. "Let's see, Bandits, Villagers, Soldiers or..." He peeked his head around the corner. "The Last Legion."
"Talk about speaking of the devil..." The Sword Sighed.
There were at least thirty Men with shields and small handheld machine pistols, ten with rifles and two Centurions. One with a sword giving orders, the other turned around and ran. They were shooting Grimm, attracted by some form of Negativity caused by some atrocity that the force they're defending is committing. Umbra looked into the sky and saw smoke to the west of them. Then he heard their commander.
"Hold the line, you bunch of Magots." The Centurion ordered while waving around his sword. "Mars will be done soon, then we can get the hell out of this frozen shithole." Umbra then took off through the woods as they continued to hold out against the Grimm. It wasn't long until he came upon a Fishing Village, there was two steam ships flying the colors of the Last Legion on the beach. He took out some binoculars and looked. In the Middle of the small village, there was at least fifty people on the ground as Legionaries surrounded them. There in the center of it all was massive Man, he wore the Legionary armor but atop his helmet was a red crest. He had two Machetes in his hands.
Silverfin Village, Town Center.Mars stood menacingly over the heard of Sheep. He grinned as they looked up at him with terror. "Alright, you pathetic bitches all are going to be our new livestock." He walked in between them all. There was Humans and Faunus, Men and Women, Boys and Girls. Fathers and Mothers huged their Spouses and Children tight. Around the small town, the corpses of those who fought back are laying where they fell. The Heavy thud of the Champion's boots quakes the ground as he strided through their bounty. One Woman, who held her Son and Daughter close gave him a spiteful glare. Mars stopped, and looked her right in the eyes. She did not submit.
The Titan of a Man bent down on his knees and spoke. "I like you, I think I'll make you one of my personal slaves."
The Woman spat in his face, "Never." The Champion just put away one Machete and wiped his face.
"What's got you in this mood? Was one of them your Husband? Or your Wife?" He got closer to her, "I can assure you darling, I can make you scream in a way they never could."
"Leave my mother alone!" The Boy broke away from his Mother and hit him in the side of the face with all his prepubescent might. The Brutalis just looked at the boy with a insane grin as the Woman's defiant face twisted into horror.
"I gotta hand it to you kid, you got guts..." He grabbed the Boy by the hair, "But no one! Not even a Brat like you challenges me and lives!" The people screamed in Terror, the Mother and the Boy's Sister screeched in Horror. He raised his Machete and readied a strike. "Time to die, brat!" Before he could precede, he was interupted.
"Sir!" A Centurion shouted as he ran out of the woods. In anger, Mars threw the Kid on the snow covered ground. His Mother and Sister quickly grabbed him and moved back from the giant.
"What is it, Gernar?" He raises his Machete close to the Centurions steel face. "I was having some fun, until you came along."
"S-Sir, the G-Grimm are becoming too much for the Shield Guardians, we need to get the Slaves aboard and out of here now, their Negativity is gonna attract a horde." Mars took several more steps closer until he towered over the Centurion.
"Who am I Gernar?" He asked a simple but complicated question.
"You're a Champion..." Gernar answered honestly.
"I'm your Goddam Superior, you don't have any right to question MY AUTHORITY." He raised a meaty finger to the Centurions face, "Now we'll leave when I say we leave. Now go tell those Pussys to kill every last Grimm they see or die trying." He snarled, "If anyone whines or cries, I will personally cut them to pieces and feed them to the hounds myself." He his rage filled face was now centimeters away, "Do you got that, you Pathetic excuse of a Warrior?"
"Y-Yes Sir!" The Centurion turned to run back into the woods. Mars turned around back to the crowd of "Sheep".
"Now where was I..." He said drawn out and filled with malice as he reached for the Boy.
"Hey roid-freak! How many steroids do you inject on a daily basis to stay that huge?" Everyone, the Legionaries, the God of War and the soon-to-be-Slaves, looked over to the Clearing. Emerging from the Woods, with the head of Gernar in one hand, a crimson runesword in the other. A black hood obscured his face, his scarf flapping in the northern wind.
"You." Mars turned to face him with a grin, "The Dark Swordsman, The Bearer of the Red Sword of Tyr, The Rebellious One." The Champion drew his other machete. "I've waited a long time to kill you, Umbra. I've heard stories about you, how you've slaughtered over a thousand of our Men throughout the last year and a half. How you've killed three Champions, Aurum Audax, Bellator Duris and a close friend of mine, Flax Mortis."
"The Grim Reaper was your friend? Gee, I wouldn't think a Assassin and a Brute were best buddies." Umbra nonchalantly said.
"He was more than a Assassin and you know it, you shit." Mars looked down and his voice stifled. "My Friend was a true warrior, many enemies of our Legion died by his Scythe. The only thing I can do is thank you, Umbra, thank you for sending him to Tyhall to feast with the Gods. I shall be sending you to Tyhel shorty, to burn and suffer for your Defiance."
"Not going to happen." He flipped his sword and grabbed it by the blade as he tossed Gernar's head into the Air and bated it with the hilt of Tyrfing. The Centurion's head zoomed through the air towards Mars, but he just knocked it away with his sword. He raised his duel wielded blades into the air and shouted.
"Come on Warriors, today we will avenge our Comrades or join the Gods!" In response, the Legionaries all around cheered and roared at their Leaders words. "Kill that Hooded Rat!" Umbra immediately ran towards cover as the Legionaries with Rifles fired at him. He ducked behind a shack, then jumped up onto its roof and threw two of his throwing knives at two of them. One found its mark in the eye socket of a helmet, the other in the neck. The two riflemen fell either dead or dying. Umbra used his teleporting ability to flash over behind another and run him through the back.
After pulling the blade out off the defeated foe in front of him, a Legionary came at him with a swipe of his Gladus. He back stepped and decapitated him. As another grunt fell he turned his attention upon the Champion only to find Mars charging at him with a insane smile. He rolled out of the way as the berserk Champion instead slice through the support beam of a porch. Taking his chance, Umbra dove for his undefended back.
He was met instead with a blade coming at him which he blocked, then the other as Mars slung at him with slash after slash. Umbra block and dodged as best as he could. His Aura, which he had on, was the only thing keeping him from getting cut, impaled or decapitated himself. "Why won't you die, boy?!!" Umbra stepped to the right.
"Cause," He slashed the Giants side, "I won't stop until you're all dead!" He was only met with a strike to the face with the pommel of his Machetes that threw him to the ground.
"I'm getting tired of you smart mouth, Boy." He raised his blades into the air to finish the Swordsman off, only to see a flash of red infront of him. "What-argh!" He felt pain as Umbra stabbed him in the side repeatedly with his dagger, after five stabs, he was knocked back again by the now extremely angry but smirking Mars. "I'll give you some credit, that was clever, but now that means your death is going to be even more painful."
Umbra got up, and dodged away from a slash from a Legionary. "For the Legion!!" He screamed. Umbra then cut his arm off, grabbed him and threw him at Mars. Who just knocked him away with on strike, he flew through the air before smacking into a tree with a snap, then gently onto the snow dead.
"You know, for a Champion I suspected better." Umbra said raising his sword defensively. Legionaries with guns and swords surrounded him.
"What?!" Mars snarled.
"You're Dead Buddy kept me on my toes better than you." Mars eyes twitched and he laughed.
"You dare insult my skills, boy, I'm the avatar of the God of War!!" He lit up in flames as they covered his body in a barrier. The snow around him seems to evaporate into steam. "I'm going to burn your disembodied limbs into ashes and offer them to Tyr!" He raised his Carnage Scissors into the air.
"Go ahead and try, bastard." Umbra raises Tyrfing into the Air, ready to strike.
"Grrrrrrrrraaaaahhhhh!!!!" Mars charged, like a bull on fire.
"Arrrrraaaaaahhh!!!!" Umbra met him, ready to slash him in half.
"Umbra!" Umbra looked around and saw Ruby standing in front of him, waving her hand. He blinked and looked around, she was wearing her pajamas, the rest of his Team did the same, they looked at him. He scratched his head awkwardly. "What's wrong? Why were you just sitting there making weird faces? "
"I was just thinking back on some stuff." He waved away their concerns, "It happens. I just vividly remember things sometimes."
"You had us weirded out for a moment," Blake said as she covertly tighted her bow. "You looked excited."
"It was just a memory of a Victory, nothing concerning any of you." He rose from the seat and pulled out the scroll again.
7:42.
"Well it looks like we got two hours until classes." He walked out the room, "Go ahead and change, I'll be out here." As the door closed, they all looked at each other.
"I feel bad for him," Blake said looking at the door, "Clearly all he's been through has affected him in ways we can't comprehend."
"He's did that blank stare thing yesterday and then became angry. Now he looked like a drugged out stoner." Yang stated, "Why does he do that?"
Weiss about spoke up, but she stopped herself. She was divided on whether or not telling them of his unique trait, she did not know if that was something he would be fine with her telling others or if it was something personal to him. She then blinked her eyes, yesterday morning she woke up scorning him and now she cared whether or not she was breaching his privacy. She couldn't help but remember his voice filled with sorrow and guilt at that Garden last night.
"Anyway," Ruby got their attention, "We just got to accept he's just that way and try to help him however we can."
Beacon Academy Dorms, Hallway.
Umbra sat against the wall by the door, waiting patiently. His gloved hands flexed and popped as he yawned. The hallway was quiet and no one was about. The Shadow looked at his hands, hands that had took many lives. He closed his eyes and sighed. When he had reopened them, he was greeted with a darkly dimmed hallway and the sound of heavy footsteps to his right.
Beads of sweat started to form on his forehead, he held his breath. He could hear a raspy voice laugh along with a scraping. He slowly turned his head to the direction of the of the sounds and saw It. Down the hallway was the littered corpses of many who fell beneath him: Legionaries, White Fang, Gang Members and more. What horrified him was the tall and slender hooded figure, wielding a long black sword, with runes glowing red in the darkness. It's skeletal hand scratched the wall as it kept walking towards him.
Thump.
"Y-You ain't real." He said defiant. The Hooded figure raised its head up, exposing glowing crimson eyes.
Thump, Thump.
"Um-Bra..." It teased, "I'm gonna kill you, Um-Bra." With one step, a dead Legionary's Helmeted Head was crushed like a stomped on full can of cherry soda.
Thump, Thump, Thump.
"S-Stay back." Umbra told the Demon, it just laughed. Then in a instant, it ran at him.
"Die!!"
Thump, Thump, Thump, Thump, Thump!
The Swordsman froze, the Monster of his Mind rapidly advanced and raised its ebony blade. He could see its vile smile as it brought it down upon him. He internally panicked, this couldn't be the end. Could it?
"Hey, are you ok?" Umbra snapped out of it, and looked ahead to see Jaune dressed in the school's uniform, worried. He looked back in the direction it was and saw nothing but a hallway with doors to dorm rooms.
"Yeah, I just got freaked out." He rubbed his face, "I'm used to being hyper aware all the time."
"Well, you shouldn't be here." Then Jaune frowned and muttered, "Unless your looking out for Cardin and his Gang."
"Who?" Umbra slowly got up.
"Never mind, need a hand?" The Blonde offered, the Darkhaired Boy took it.
"Thanks." He said as he was fully standing.
"No problem" Jaune scratched the back of his head nervously, Umbra fidgeted. Guilt itched the back of their minds.
"Uh, listen." Umbra sighed, "Between you and me, I'm sorry again that I hurt you and caused your friend to get hurt, ok?" Jaune looked down with a frown.
"It ain't your fault, it was mine." He put his hands into his pockets, "I was supposed to lead my team, I was supposed to think-not charge blindly like I did. I gave into fear and reckless courage and it got my best friend hurt and made my Partner worried. Not to mention put guilt on Nora." He looked up, a stern face now adorned him. "It was my fault and I take responsibility." Umbra eyes widened.
"But, I was the one who hurt you two." Said Umbra confused, "You made mistakes, but it was my actions-"
"Umbra, we've not known each other long, but I heard what you've done and the people you've helped." He closed his eyes, "Your a good man, though your methods are questionable and... your far more skilled than I am." He opened his eyes and looked at his hands. "I...I wasn't strong enough," He closed his hands, "I wasn't strong enough to face you. I wasn't strong enough to help my Team, instead I burdened it." He grit his teeth, "Listen Umbra, we knew you were strong before we were sent after you. We knew that you would be a hard fight. But instead of thinking and strategizing, I allowed fear to well up inside me instead of planning, while Ruby did her job as a Leader. When we were going to approach you, I came up with the stupid idea to approach you through the woods, where in reality only a few of us were cut out for stealth."
"Y-Yeah, I did kinda noticed that." The Black Haired Boy said while scratching the back of his head nervously.
"Listen, it may be selfish of me to bare the guilt-but it all truly is mine. You may have beaten me, you may have tricked Nora into hitting Ren. But I, I should have been a better leader instead of a fool."
"Jaune, I..." Umbra never got to finish as Ruby opened the door.
"We're done Um-Hey Jaune!" She switch over her tone easily. "How are you today?" She walked over to him with a smile on her face. Umbra couldn't help but stare at her, in all his life, she was perhaps the happiest person he ever met.
"Uh, good." He answered her, "I was just talking with Umbra here about class." He ended in a nervous laugh. Umbra looked at his scroll.
"Yeah, speaking of classes, we have forty minutes left until they start." The door to Team JNPR's room opened and everything went silent. Pyrrha, Nora and Ren just stood there while Jaune, Umbra and Ruby did the same.
"Jaune." Pyrrha said while glaring at the scarfaced Boy, "We're going to breakfast, care to join us?"
"Um, yeah!" Jaune then turned to Umbra and reached out his hand. "Let bygones be bygones, agreed?" The Shadow grabbed his hand and shook.
"Agreed." With that, Jaune turned around.
"Talk to later you later, Ruby and Umbra." He waved his team. "Let's go get some breakfast." Then JNPR started down the hall, not before Pyrrha and Nora could glare at the Swordsman. After they were gone, Umbra just sighed.
"They're never gonna get over that..." He said while rubbing his hand through his hair. Ruby turned and smiled at him.
"Don't worry, they will." She said while taking a few steps towards him and putting her hand on his shoulder. "It'll just take time."
"Yeah, a hell lot of a time." He turned and went back into their dorm while Ruby followed. He ignored Yang, Weiss and Blake's glances as he sat down on a chair. Yang approached him, sporting the School uniform with a smile.
"Are you excited for your first day of Class, Bra?" She asked cheerily.
"No, I am not." He looked at her with a spiteful look, "And stop calling me that."
"Calling you what, Bra?" She feigned innocence.
"Bra, damn it!" He growled.
"Woah, woah, woah, there's no need to be feisty Tiger." She leaned forward and whispered with a devilish smile, "If you want to see my bra, all you got to do is ask." Weiss and Blake went pale.
"T-That's not what I mean!" He said with a flustered snarl, "Stop calling me Bra, it's Umbra! As in Um-Bra!" Yang laughed and slapped her hand onto his shoulder with enough force to jerk him back.
"What ever you say Bra." Umbra steamed with anger as she continued laughing. Ruby, Weiss and Blake couldn't help themselves but to facepalm and sigh.
Umbra jumped up with a growl, he said "Listen here Blondie, if you don't stop right now, I'll kick your ass!"
"But you can hit a Woman, that's not very Manly is it?" She teased with a sly grin.
"I didn't know I was talking to one." He bit back, Yangs eyes widen and her smile turned into a frown as she gritted her teeth.
"Oh really?" She asked with an emotionless tone. Ruby got in between them.
"Guys, lets just calm down now." She was ignored.
"Yeah." He said as Yangs eye's widened in rage.
"Why you!" She threw a punch right at his face, but he side stepped to her right and warped his arm around her neck into a choke hold. Everyone was stunned.
"Listen Yang, I'm sorry, but stop calling me Bra. Its really disrespectful to my Name." She flailed and tried to break free, but he had learned from their spar. She couldn't break free, at least not without her semblance or weapons. "So when I let you go, let's just go about our day, ok?"
"Fine." She muttered bitterly, he released her. Gasping for air, she turned to him with a scowl. "This is over Bra!"
"My name isn't Bra-" He was interupted when Weiss slapped him. "What was that for?!" He turned to the White Haired Heiress.
"Stop acting like a Dolt!" She said to him sternly with narrowed eyes. Yang started to laugh as he was agape.
"Why are you getting onto me, Princess!!" He pointed at Yang, "She started it!" Weiss rubbed her noise.
"You were the one who about made it breakout into a braw-in our Dorm room no less-thirty six minutes before class." Umbra stood there, with a twitching eye unable to combat her words. Yang just continued to laugh, while Weiss turned her glare to her. "And you," She addressed Ruby's Sister, "Why are you so desperate to aggravate everyone everyday?"
"What now, Weiss Cream?" She smirked.
"You're aggravating Umbra, knowing full well that he will actually fight you and is easy bait."
"Hey!" Umbra said, but was ignored.
"I know, that's what I like about him." She remarked, "I rather fight someone physically that verbally like our fights Weiss."
"Gods," The Heiress huffed, "Your helpless." Before the argument could continue, Blake interupted everyone.
"I hope you all realize, that your wasting our free time before classes." She said closing her book and standing up from her bed. "Not to mention Breakfast."
"I'm not really hungry this morning." Yang waved her off.
"Oh yeah," Umbra said, running his hand through his hair. "Do any of you have any spare notebooks for classes?"
"Why do you ask?" Said Weiss.
"Because, I need to take notes for class obviously." He said, "I can't do that with anything I have right now."
"Wait a moment." She turned around and went over to her stuff. Ruby, Yang and Blake just looked at each other as she came back with a fresh unused leather bound book. "Here." She dropped it in his hands, "You better use this, this was reserved for when I needed it-instead I'm giving it to an unprepared dolt like you."
"Thanks, I guess." He looked at it, it was smooth and light blue, white snowflakes adorned it.
"Your welcome, but know that I will not keep you up." She pointed in his face and harshly said, "Get your own supplies from now on."
"Well gee, it isn't like this is my first time ever going to a regular school." He said sarcastically.
"Wait this is your first time going to school?" Ruby asked, causing everyone else to stop.
"Not...technically...I guess you could say I was homeschooled." He sighed, "My...Village had a School, I didn't go to it." He looked down for a moment and a weird look entered his eyes. "Anyway, enough of this." Blake and Weiss instinctively narrowed their eyes and raised their eyebrows.
"Well that's ok!" Ruby grabbed his arm with a smile, "Because today is gonna be great!!" The Boy just looked at her. "Come on Ruby, you can do this, your his Leader!" She thought nervously. "Let's get out there and get classes over with!"
"Ok." He said, "The sooner this is over with, the sooner I get close to freedom after all."
"All right!!" She screamed, "Let's go team, to class!" She pointed in the air as she then ran with Umbra's arm in her grip.
"Holy shit!" He shouted as she practically bursted through the door and ran off down the hall at speed uncomprehending to him, while he was flying behind her.
"Ruby, you dolt!" Weiss angrily shouted while following after her. Blake and Yang looked at each other, then they followed them.
Beacon Academy, Hallway, 8:47.
He couldn't help himself from barfing into the trash can, his vision was still dizzy as he raised his head. Ruby stood there innocently as he gave her glare filled with murderous intent. Yang and Weiss found themselves chuckling at his reduced state as he took swaying steps towards them. "I'm going to skin you alive Ruby," He said struggling to keep food down, "If it's the last thing I do." They were close to Professors Port's Classroom and some students gazed at them while walking by.
"C-Come on U-Umbra..." She she said nervously and raising her hands defensively, "There's no need to get rash..."
"Rash? Making me puke up what little food I've ate is rash Ruby." He said threateningly, "For the sake of all the Gods people worship, do not take off with me like that again."
"Calm down Vomit Boy the Second, it's about time for class to start." Yang interjected. He simply took a deep breath with his eyes close and sighed.
"Fine, let's get this started." He said while walking pass the four into the classroom. He instantly freezed as a dozen or so Students sitting and standing around looked right at him. Anxiety rose as he felt their stinging glares at his scar. The feeling of daggers stabbing him all over commenced as Umbra took steps forward. There was a old man sitting at a desk grading papers. He had gray middle-parted hair and a thick mustache that seemed to hide his mouth. His figure from what Umbra could see was obese.
Umbra went and stood in front of the Man's desk and spoke. "Um, Hello." The Old Man looked up from his papers and spoke in a hardy tone.
"Ah, Hello Lad, your the new student Ozpin told me about, Umbra Redson?"
"Yes Sir."
"Ha, welcome to Grimm Studies, I'm your dashing Teacher-Professor Port!" He streched our his hand, "Put it there!" Umbra calsped his hand and shook it with a deadpanned expression. "Well, go take your seat, Class is about to begin." Umbra turned and felt the myriad of gazes right on him again. It made him uncomfortable, in the past he wore a hood to negate this feeling. Now he couldn't. He saw Ruby waving him over and patting a seat right between her and Weiss, the latter put her head down from the embarrassing actions of her Partner. The Red Eyed Boy made his way over to them, hearing whispers all around him. He knew they were talking about him, it seemed that was a thing he couldn't escape.
When he sat down, a wave of relief washed over him. He took out the New Notebook he got from Weiss and a pen from his satchel. He looked to his left and right and found that Ruby, Yang, Weiss and Blake had looks of boredom on their faces, even though class has yet to start. Umbra looked around the room in front of him and noticed diagrams of common Grimm, a Axe-Blunderbuss and a Golden bust of the Professor? "What the fuck?"
"Good Morning Class!" Mister Port said as he now stood in front of everyone, "Today, as you may have seen, we have a new student joining us as a new member of Team RWBY." Umbra's heart sank. "Mister Redson, would you please like to introduce yourself." The Scarfaced Boy sighed, stood up and turned to the class behind him and met their gazes. There were about a dozen or more teams in the room including Team JNPR, Boys and Girls with a plethora of differing Hair and Eye colors looked at him. Some wore smiles, others frowns and some just didn't care.
"Hey, I'm Umbra." He said uncaringly, then turning around and sitting down again as quickly as possible.
"Now that's out of the way, today's lesson is about Imps, but first-a story about my first encounter with them..." There was a collective sigh.
Umbra didn't notice it as his mind flooded with memories.
A Long Time Ago.
Umbra walked through the cobblestone streets of Arînville with a smile on his face. Today was the day, he anticipated this all week long-but now he would get to go Deer Hunting with Dustin. He wore a camouflage Hoodie he had gotten for the occasion with camouflaged pants along with black work boots. He found himself soon on the outskirts of his Village and around the dozen farms that took up the land. He made his way over to his friends Farm, and right up to the medium sized house they owned. After knocking on the wooden door, he was answered by his friends dad.
"Umbra." Dustin's Dad answered. He was a rugged man, with long brown hair and a thick beard. His eyes were a light brown and his skin a tan white. He wore a black cowboy hat and a Camouflaged Jacket with blue jeans and black cowboy boots. On his hip was two engraved revolvers, holstered (schofield revolvers). "Come on in Boy." Umbra didn't say anything when he entered the house. He went into the hallway and knocked on the door Dustin's Room.
"Hey Umbra!" The Dirty Blond said as he opened the door, "Are you ready to go shoot some Deer?!"
"Yeah." The Darkhaired Boy said with a smile.
"Come on in," He beckoned his friend into his room, "Pa has to get the horses so we have some time." Umbra entered the room and looked around. It was plain, walls of wood and no paint, a bed with a red and white quilt, a few drawers and a window. Umbra took a seat in one of the two chairs that Dustin had in his room.
"So Dustin, have you hunted before?" The Black Haired twelve year old asked.
"Unfortunately, no." Dustin said as he sat down in the other chair. "Pa wouldn't let me, even though he taught me how to shoot a gun three years ago." Then did a thick mocking voice "You'd just cry and draw the Grimm to us, Boah."
"So you've never killed before?" Umbra asked.
"No, have you?" Umbra looked down.
"Yeah, I have." He looked up, "I've killed rabbits before and skinned them." Dustin leaned forward and pointed a finger in his friends face.
"But never a deer before?" He said with a smirk.
"No..."
"Ha! My Pa taught me a year ago how to skin one, so I got ya there!"
"Ha Ha, very funny." The Red Eyed Boy said sarcastically.
"Boy!" Dustin's Father shouted outside. "Get out here!"
"Coming Pa!" Dustin answered back jumping out of his seat, "Come on!" He said to Umbra as they both ran outside.
A Few Minutes Later.
"Alright, so we aren't going far into the woods, around six miles." The Rugged Cowboy said as got atop his horse. "We're going to try to bag three deer for our three horses. Maybe a rabbit or two if we get lucky."
"Alright Pa!" Dustin said atop his horse, Umbra sat on another as well.
"Boys, don't get sad if you aren't able to bag anything. This is more of a learning experience than a Fun time, got it? Not every time someone goes hunting they get something, sometimes people return empty handed."
"Got it Mister Eagle." The Red Eyed Boy replied. "I'm just wondering, what do we do if we run into Grimm?"
"Don't worry, I'll take care of them." He kicked his horse with his spurs. "Now let's go!" Then they were off, their horses galloping into the woods.
Later, Deep In The Woods.
"Let's hitch up here Boys." Dustin's Father said as he stepped down from his white horse and tied it to a tree branch. Umbra and Dustin slowed down their horses and climbed off them. After hitching their horses to trees as well, they went to Dustin's Father. "Alright," He said as he pulled out a Scoped Rifle, "This is the Gun you two will share and use to take down some deer." He handed the Rifle to Dustin and asked the two boys a question. "What is the Number one rule of Gun Safety."
"Never aim at anything we aren't willing to destroy." They both said at the same time.
"Good. Let's get started."
Hours passed as the early morning became noon. Umbra, Dustin and Dustin's Father sat waiting for deer to take the bait. When one Buck finally came into the opening, Dustin held the rifle and prepared to fire.
"Remember Son, hold your breath to steady your shot, aim for the neck or chest for a clean kill." The Bearded Cowboy said before taking a swig from a flask. Dustin calmly held his breath but his hand trembled from anxiety. When he pulled the trigger, he hit the deer in the side, causing it to run five feet before falling over squealing.
"I didn't mean to-" Dustin couldn't finish as his father got up and walked over to the dying deer kneeling over.
"Dustin, Umbra, Come here." The Two Boys got up and walked over to the convulsing and screaming deer. "See this Boys, this is what happens when a animal is not given a swift death, we're no better than the Grimm harming people." He pulled out a Bowie knife, "Here Dustin, put it out of its misery." The Blonde Boy teared up at the at the sight of the deer.
"I-I..."
"I'll do it." Umbra said walking forward and grabbing the knife out of his Friends Fathers hand. Kneeling down onto one knee, he petted the Buck's neck gently and its screams died down. He plunged the knife into the Deer's heart and it gave out one final scream before it went quiet. Dustin cried, as he looked at the dead animal.
"I couldn't do it.."
"Listen Son, I know this is your first time hunting, but this is just how it is. As Humans, it's our duty to be as Humane as possible when it comes to killing animals. It's what separates us from the Grimm when it comes to hunting."
"I know, but I got nervous and I missed it's neck." He said sniffling. Umbra rose up and interjected.
"It's over now, let's just get this one on one of the horses." Dustin's Father got up as well.
"Your right-" He was cut off by a canopy of hellish shrieks all around them, making Umbra and Dustin cover their ears.
"Aaaaaaahhhhhhhhhh!!!"
"Shit." He said pulling out his revolvers, "Get behind me-now!" Behind some trees, a tall lanky humanoid Grimm came out of hiding. It had a face that resembled a deformed human skull and it's head adorned two horns, on its chest and back was the only bone armor it had. "God damnit, of all the Grimm we could encounter out here we had to get one of these rare sons of bitches." The Grimm stumbled forward with its arms stretched out, before it reach out for its prey, two shots rang out and its arms were severed at the elbow. It looked at it's arms before a shot threw its head back. As it fell to the ground dead, Dustin's Father turned to the two boys. "We're getting the hell out of here, back to the horses!" They looked at the deer for a moment before he screamed at them again. They ran through the woods, back to the three horses tied to a tree. But before anything could be done, Dustin's horse was grabbed by one stretched out arm and jerked out into the woods. It screamed in terror before an audible snap silenced it.
"Jack!!" Dustin screamed, his father just grabbed him and put him on his horse and untied it. As a hand came towards him, Dustin's Father pulled out his revolver and shot it without looking. He looked over to Umbra.
"Get on the Horse, Ares will get you two the hell out of here while I send these damn Imps nine feet under." Umbra complied, but looked back at Dustin's Father. Dustin asked what he was going to.
"What about you Pa?!" He asked distressed.
"I'll be fine Boy, now go!" He finished as he slapped the horse making it run. As the two Boys rode off, they heard the sounds of shots and the hellish shrieks of the Imps. After a while, while the shrieks and shots decreased in sound and in frequency, they made it out of the woods. Surprisingly, there was five guards armed with assault rifles waiting for them. As they stopped, Umbra was calm and collected as Dustin was hyperventilating. This was his first encounter with Grimm.
The Guards tried to calm Dustin down while Umbra just stared into the woods with sad eyes. After twenty minutes of just standing there while Dustin's hyperventilating became sobbing, Umbra noticed a figure riding slowly on the horse he rode into the woods, one hand held a revolver while the other held the reigns. He had scratches on his arms, on his legs and one across his chest. "Stop crying Boy, you're making me disappointed." At this Dustin's sobs stop and were replaced with a smile. As Dustin's Father stepped off the horse, he was met with Dustin hugging him. He just gently ruffled the Boy's hair. All the while, Umbra just stood and watched with a smile while a tear leaked from his right eye.
That Evening, Dustin's House.
Umbra stayed and helped Dustin tend to his Father with his wounds, the Man surprisingly had very little despite clamming to have fought and killed six Imps. Umbra guessed why, he had an Aura. He got up and went to his bedroom, as Dustin went to the bathroom at the same time. Umbra, feeling curious, followed the Man. As he peaked into the room, he saw the man take off his holsters and put them into a chest and then went outside from the exit in his room to do who knows what. Curiosity claimed Umbra again as he walked stealthily towards the chest and opened it. Inside was the two revolvers, bags of Lien, a journal and folded up peice of paper. He grabbed the latter and opened it, and he was surprised to see it was a wanted Poster.
WANTED, DEAD OR ALIVE.

Umbra was left speechless, he knew Dustin's Father was a rough man, but not this. Before he could put it back and close the chest, the door opened across the room and Dustin's Father just stood there. Umbra threw the Poster back into the Chest and raised his hands up. Dutch ran across the room and Umbra closed his eyes, but instead of death he found Dutch's hands on his shoulders. "Please, don't tell Dustin, I don't want that life for him."
"I-I won't, your secret is safe with me." He was then hugged by the Man.
"Thank you, thank you so much."
Present Day, Professor Ports Class.
Umbra sat in a trance, Weiss just stared at his Drawling in her Notebook she gave him. A two page drawling of incredible detail showed a Imp Grimm stretching its arms out at a...Cowboy with two pistols? She gave a glance over at Ruby who was astonished with his Drawing skills as well. "Umbra," Ruby whispered in order not to attract the wrath of Port. "Umbra!" She said a little louder, breaking him out of his trance.
"What?" He said out loud, gaining attention from the entire room.
"Ahem..." He looked infront of him to find Professor Port standing there looking at him with subtle anger, his hands behind his back. "Mister Redson, since you obviously think you are too good to give your attention to this class, may I ask you what is the best way to deal with an Imp? Seeing how my Lesson does not entertain you." He asked, thinking he would correct this Boy's arrogant behavior to his lesson. Umbra sighed.
"Cut offf and smash their Heads, cutting off their limbs only weaken them for a bit before they regenerate. Destroying the head is the only way to kill an Imp for good, cutting off it's head and thinking it's dead will only end with it slowly regenerating it's body. If it screams, get down and look out for it's arms, if it grabs you, stab it's arms as much as you can or your dead. At least, that's what I usually do." He answered, Port just stood there in subtle shock, to his left and right Ruby, Weiss, Blake and Yang were visibly impressed.
"That's...a good answer, but what about taking one down with a team?" Port tested him again, Umbra shrugged.
"I don't know, I've never killed Imps with any team before, I'm usually on my own." He answered honestly, Port went for the kill. There were a few gasps in the classroom behind him.
"And you see, that's why your here Young Man, to learn Teamwork." Port gloated, "I applaud you on your detailed answer for dealing with an Imp solo, but you must realize that your answer did not address what you should do with a team." The Old Man went to walking back and forth as he continued. "As Huntsmen and Huntresses, you must learn how to fight Grimm with your team, alone and with other Hunters in general. Sometimes you can handle a few Grimm by yourself, but others you're going to need help. Sometimes that help is your Team from your years in training, sometimes it's other random Hunters you run into, sometimes it's a Kingdoms self defense force and at worse, Settlement Guards." He stopped in front of the class. "So don't get cocky, you may be able to take down some Grimm yourself, but none of you are invincible warriors, there will be times everyone of you will need the people beside you." He turned his attention to Umbra again but spoke still to the class, "In conclusion, no matter how useless or boring you find this class or any other, it is vital that you listen and pay attention. Because this is the knowledge that will save your lives someday. Mister Redson, since this is your first day here, I'll give you an warning-but I better not catch you interrupting my class again."
"What the Fuck did I even do?" Umbra thought with a deadpanned expression.
"Now, where was I," He started up his tale again as he walked back and forth, "The Imps that were encroaching on Kyle's Farm were five in number, I had found them that night not far from the scratches left on his shed. They were imposing and their screams deafening, but nothing could shake my heroic resolve as I preceded to kill one..."
"What a hypocrite..." Umbra said in a mumble, Ruby leaned over and whispered.
"I should've warned you, Port goes on and on about his boring tales but he really doesn't like it if you don't pay attention to him." She told him.
"Goes on about team work only for him to tell a tale about killing five Imps himself, Gods." He was starting to regret agreeing to go to this school now, he hated Hypocrites above all else. He looked down at his new Notebook and noticed the drawing of Dustin's now deceased Dad named Dutch shooting at the Imp all those years ago in that botched hunting trip. Back then, he thought what Dutch did was amazing, killing six Imps by himself. Now after his own few encounters, it didn't feel so impressive anymore.
Time passed by and soon his first day in the boring Hell known as Ports Class was over and Team RUWBY made their way out into the halls, while Umbra was asked a question from Blake. "Who taught you how to deal with Imps?"
"My former Master and my experience fighting them." He answered simple and to the point as they walked to to their next class. Weiss asked her own question.
"How many Grimm have you killed anyway, how many different types?" He shrugged his shoulders.
"I don't know, a lot. I've been all over two continents and a half." He told her, "Traveling on foot is a sure way to encounter a variety of Grimm in a dozen situations."
"It sounds like you've had a lot of Adventures Umbra." Rwby said smiling.
"Yeah, I wish I didn't." What he'd give to go back, to have a semi normal life again. To hangout with Stammel, to play Chess with Liard and to ride horses with Dustin. Hell, even to go back and see him again. But they were all gone, swept away by the cruel tides of fate orchestrated by that God Damned Man. What he'd give and do to burry his dagger into his one eye and his sword right through his blackened heart. He grit his teeth as he remembered the Bastard who took everything from him. His smug and arrogant grin, his laid back posture, that damned blood soaked sword. He'd took everything from him and still he smiled, smiled as he gloated about killing her, about killing them all. He smiled knowing that he took everything from Umbra. That...Bastard. He would, no, he will kill him one day. Even if it meant he had to kill everyone standing in his way, even if it was the last thing he'd do. He will take that One-Eyed Bastard to the Grave and everyone of the Last Legion too. Too much blood was on his hands to stop now, too many innocent casualties caused by his mere existence. He must, he will-
"Umbra!" Ruby said elbowing him, as he looked up he saw a tall Boy with burnt orange hair and indigo eyes staring down at him with a intimidating smirk. There were three other boys beside him, all glaring at Umbra.
"Well, well, well, what do we got here boys?" He said crossing his arms, "A New Kid who enrolled late, no doubt your here because someone pulled some strings, right Scarface?" His cohorts chuckled, Umbra just sighed while RWBY started to get tense.
"I have no quarrel with you, so let's-" He was interrupted.
"No, you listen here Scarface, I think you should know who's in charge around here." The Tall Boy said leaning forward and poking Umbra intimidatingly. "Let me give you a clue, it's not you, Mister I can kill Grimm all by myself."
"Listen Jackass," Umbra said unflinching, "I don't have time to listen to you and your little band of thugs bullshit. I'm not scared of you, nor am I threatened. I've faced countless men who could eat you all for breakfast and I've come out on top most of the time against them. Now why don't you all step aside so me and my new team can go to class, alright?" The Tall Boy and his Team was surprised alongside Ruby, Blake, Yang and Weiss for a moment before it twisted into anger.
The Redhead push Umbra hard though he hardly budged. "Do you know who I am Punk? Did your team of Try-Hards not tell you?" He said with a voice filled with fury, Ruby was starting to get worried while Yang, Blake and Weiss were starting to get very angry themselves. Students were starting to look at the Bully and the New Kid. Umbra however was calm and unamused.
"No, and I don't give a fuck." He said as he started walk around him with his hand in his pockets. The Tall Boy furiously reached out to stop him by the shoulder, but his hand was caught in a tight grip before he could even reach him. He gritted his teeth as his arm cracked in pain. Umbra looked at him with murderous intent with one eye and said "Fuck. Off. Now." Slowly and thematically. The Boy jerked his hand free and looked at him with Hatred in his eyes.
"This isn't over Scarface, you better remember that." He turned around and headed down the hall to the same class they were going to, his little gang followed. The other students in the hall were shocked at what they saw. Umbra however, didn't care as he continued down the hall.
"Umbra..." Ruby spoke walking up right beside him.
"What?" He said with a sigh.
"Those Guys..." She said touching her fingers together nervously.
"A bunch of Thugs, yeah I guess as much-" He was interrupted by a hard slap on the back that jerked him forward a bit. "What was that for?!" He turned back to Yang who smiled cheekily.
"For putting Cardin in his place." She said with glee.
"So that's the name of that Jackass."
"Those Bullies have picked on everyone in one way or another." Blake added. "What you did no doubt damaged their Reputation." Umbra chuckled, throwing them off balance.
"I tend to do that." He said in a smirk.
Weiss just digested the whole situation in silence. She was, impressed to say the least. Most Boys she's met have tend to either be push overs or brutes who do whatever they want. Jaune, who had tried so hard to gain her attention could've if he just stood up to Cardin like he just did.
It wasn't long until they got to their next classroom, there Umbra was amazed at the order and chaos of the room itself. There in the middle of the room was a messy desk covered and surrounded by papers. On both sides of the room were organized bookshelves with a occasional stack of papers on or by it. Behind the desk was a huge map of Remnat with papers thumbtacked to it, with red string connecting it all together. For a moment Umbra realized something.
"Where's the teacher-" He was interrupted by a green haired man literally blurring in front of him, Umbra jumped back, raised his arms and spread his feet out, ready for a fight. "What the fuck?!" Everyone, including the students already in their seats looked at him. Ruby facepalmed, while Yang laughed. Weiss and Blake noticed something on the other hand, for a split second, Umbra's Eyes flickered Black.
"I didn't mean to startle you, but still that is no excuse for such language Mister Redson." The Green haired bespectacled Man said, Umbra straightened up and lowered his guard.
"I'm sorry, Professor..."
"Oobleck, it's nice to meet you Mister Redson. I've heard...quite a lot of interesting things." He then took a sip of coffee.
"Uh, you too Professor." Umbra began to walk past him before he blurred in front of him again.
"I should let you know Mister Redson, that this class has assigned seats and that your seat is over by Mister Arc." Umbra looked up to to see Pyrrha glaring at him.
"Ok." Umbra just walked over to his seat as his team did the same. As he sat down, he spoke to Jaune "Looks like we're going to going to see each other more than we thought."
"Yeah, but that's cool." Jaune said, clearly not looking forward to this class. Across the room Blake sat down by Pyrrha.
"Hello Pyrrha." The Redheaded Spartan looked at her with a smile.
"Blake, how's it been?" The Hidden Faunus just sighed.
"Eventful." In the center of the room, Professor Oobleck stood ready to begin his Lesson.
"Alright Class, today's lesson is on the Unification of Vale." He blurred over to the right side of class and to the other, "Many of you are from other Kingdoms, many of you are from Vale, but chances are most of you don't know how Vale was unified. Vale was in its infancy one of many Kingdoms of Eastern Sanus and through conquest and expansion it was one of the last five Kingdoms in the region." He took another sip and blurred again. "Does anyone know what the four other Kingdoms were called?" Cardin raised his hand, much to his teachers delight. "Yes Cardin?" Everyone turned around to look at him.
"One of them was called Westerven, my Ancestor Cardinal of House Winchester kicked their Kings ass in a battle." He said proudly.
"Yes, that did happen, but later in my lesson." He took a sip, "They were called Westerven, Saxden, Franta and Æthel. For Centuries, Vale had periodic wars with the four of them. Once coming close to defeat under the rule of King Barthan II, The Coward as his son called him postmortem." He blurred to the other side of the room. "His son, King Eric I, The Brave, took back the lost territory and saved Vale from Conquest. Then a century later, King Gerland IV, The Conqueror actually defeated the other four kingdoms." He sighed, "King Gerland IV is a very...controversial figure. He and his descendant, King Gerland VI are very polar opposites and are the two most beloved and despised Kings." Some Boy in the back of the room interrupted the lesson.
"The Conqueror did nothing wrong!" Responded with a "Woo!" From someone else and a "Damn straight." from Cardin.
"He was a Genocidal Maniac!" Another Boy yelled, "He ordered the death of kids!" A Girl spoke up, "He treated the Faunus as slaves!" Blake joined in.
"Class, Settle down-" Professor Oobleck was interrupted again, by Umbra.
"Your all wrong and right." He caught the entire classes attention. "He did horrible things, nothing to celebrate. But, that was just how things were back then. Kings Conquering Kings, the Game of Chess was invented in this kingdom and inspired by this reality." Everyone was silent with his answer.
"Mister Redson, you know of Gerland The Conqueror?" Oobleck asked with intrigue, Umbra turned to him.
"Aye, I do. He was one of Vale's most ruthless kings, taking his last two rivals; King Trivex VII of Æthel and King Vænar III of Saxden, making them bend the knee only to say "Woe be to the Conquered." And beheaded them with one swing of his greatsword. He then ordered the death of all the other royal families except for the daughter of Trivex, who he married to make his claim on all of eastern Sanus final." Umbra leaned back in his seat, "Very different from his descendant Gerland VI, The Peacemaker, who ended the Great War and Monarchy in general, who also despised Gerland The Conqueror so much he ordered his stature in Central Vale tore down. In the end, Gerland VI was assassinated by the Valen Nationalists so that his brother Eric could take the throne, the Progressives then assassinated his brother and ended the Royal Line." He then stretched his arms out.
"And ever since, the Nationalists have rallied behind The Conqueror and the Progressives The Peacemaker. They have to encase images and statues of the two because those two loony factions vandalize the other's Monarchs image. Where in reality, both Kings killed to enforce their wishes upon the world and are no better or no worse than each other, because that's what Kings did. The Nationalists and Progressives did the same thing to try and get their way."
"Well thought Umbra, I agree with most of your sentiment, as cold hearted some of it sounds." Professor Oobleck. Everyone looked at Umbra from behind, some who took offense to their beliefs being called loony, others being amazed on his perspective. When class came to an end, Blake went to Umbra as they were all walking out. "So your justifying slavery on the pretense of "That's just what Kings do"?"
"Of course not Blake, Slavery is wrong, so is War and killing, but Humans and Faunus have been committing atrocities against each other since we learned how to fight." Blake tried to think of something to say, but Weiss then joined in.
"I really don't know what to think about what you said." Ruby then interrupted them.
"It's Combat Class time!" She jumped in the air.
"So, what do we do for this Class, Ruby?" Umbra asked.
"We go back to our dorms, change into our combat gear, then we head for the lockers to get our weapons and then the arena." She replied.
"Sounds simple enough." They did exactly that. When Umbra was in the locker room, various Boys looked at him, but he didn't care as he was going to get his Best Friend. "It's been a day, my friend but it's felt like forever."
"Same, this darkness gets boring." The Sword Responded.
"Weirdo." Some random and Brave Boy said walking by him.
"He's lucky I don't kick his ass." Umbra said mentally as he looked at the smug jackass continue on his way.
"Indeed." Umbra, reunited with his Oldest companion walked into combat class and preceded to sit by Ruby. The rest of his team were already there and ready. He felt the eyes of others on his back yet again, so he put his hood on. Professor Goodwitch walked into the room, and preceded to the center of the arena. She looked up into the seats and saw the Boy Ozpin was so protective of. She was going to see what's so special about him for Oz to be so adamant about him being here and why an entire village would be killed because of him. She just had to select his opponent. She opened her scroll to tablet format and selected him and randomization, then she got her answer.
"Hello class, today we're going to start with a match between Umbra Redson and Dove Bronzewing." Umbra felt dozens of eyes on him at once and stood up.
"Good luck! I'll be rooting for you Umbra!" Ruby said excitedly. He turned his head to her.
"I don't need Luck to win this." He said with a grin. He walked to the stairs where he ran into the member of CDRL. The light brown haired Boy just scoffed at him as they walked down the stairs out into the arena. Blake turned to her teammates.
"This will be the first time we'll see Umbra fight someone else. We have an opportunity to see what we did wrong when we fought him." Weiss turned to her.
"I agree, this might even give us an idea of how to use him in teamwork, I think-"
"Good." Pyrrha said from behind her, interrupting Weiss. "I'll find out how to beat him."
Down in the Arena, Umbra stretched his arms as Dove just stood with his sword drawn. He seemed to have close eyes, wore brown and black armor and an belt with a symbol of a bird of some kind on it. His sword, called Hallshott, was built with a revolver mechanism and trigger to use it as both a pistol and sword. Umbra wasn't impressed.
"So, Dove is your name?" He said casually before the match started.
"What about it?" The normally silent Boy asked.
"Oh nothing, just seems like a girls name to me." He said with a smirk. Dove's stern face shifted into one of anger.
"What did you just say?" He asked with spite in his voice.
"I said you had a Girls name," He reached behind his back and grabbed Tyrfing, unsheathed and twirled the red sword in his hand. Everyone, including Glynda were amazed by his sword. In the brightly lit room, it's red metal and the black runes stuck out like a sore thumb. "Now shut up and let me kick your ass."
