Goodbye to a Fallen Warrior

Chapter 5

I woke up and look beside me (on my king size bed), I see Wally, Roy and Conor asleep. We stopped playing video games around 02:30am. I look to my bedside table to see the numbers 06:30am flashing at me. I very quietly get up, I need to speak to Artemis. I'm very confused, I don't know why she gave up Wally, and I have to know the real reason why. I grab some clothes and walk out of the room. I walk into the bathroom that is located at the end of the hall. I get changed and walk to the garage. What do I ride, I know, I walk toward my favourite bike, 'Macchia Nera Concept'. Bruce got it me for my 18th Birthday, even though I barely ride it (as it was in the same time frame as Wally's 'death'), it's still my favourite. I get on, locate the switch on the bike that opens the garage door, it opens and set off on my journey to Central City.

It's about 2 hour later when I see the 'Welcome to Central City' sign. I find Artemis' apartment and knock on the door. A few minutes later Artemis answers the door.

"Richard? What are you doing here?" she asks, looking very confused.
"We need to talk. Can I come in?" I reply.
"Erm sure… come on in..?"

She opens the door and I walk in. we both sit on her small couch.

"So why are you here?" she asks again.
"Why did you end things with Wally?" I ask, getting straight to the point.
"It's simple, it's because I don't love him as much as he deserves. He deserves someone who really loves him" she replies.
"Is that why you told him that there was someone close who really loves him?" I ask quietly.
"Well yeah. I had hoped it would encourage you to tell him how you feel, it's why I told him you're gay"
"You had no right to do that Artemis, it wasn't you secret to tell. Anyway you're little plan didn't work"
"Why not?" she questions.
"He thinks I'm in love with Conor"
"Why would he think that?"
"I told him that" she gives me a 'are you crazy?' look "I couldn't tell him the truth, Wally's straight and he'd never feel that way about me"
"Stop the pity party Richard. Wally loves you, he just doesn't realise it yet. You two are meant to be together, it's obvious to all except him"
"he doesn't feel that way, I accepted that fact 5 years ago. I have to go, I have Wally, Roy and Conor asleep in my bed" her eyebrow rises, she smiles.
"You work fast don't you"
"it's not like that, we were up all night playing games" her smile grows into a smirk "video games Artemis, god get your mind out of the gutter" she just laughs at me and gives me a playful smile "but seriously, thank you for doing what you did for me"

"We're friends Richard, you know if I knew how you felt back then I wouldn't have got with Wally" I stand up and look at her.
"I know" I smile, I pull her into a hug and walk out of the apartment. I get on my bike and start my journey back to Gotham.

It was an hour and a half later when I return to Wayne Manor, I put my bike away and walk into the lounge, and throw myself onto the sofa. A few minutes later Wally, Roy and Conor walk into the room.

"DUDE! Where'd you disappear to this morning" Wally whines.
"Yeah man, we had to suffer through Wally's constant complaining. I think he's just annoyed you didn't give him sex before you pulled your disappearing act". Both me and Wally blush.
"Uncool man" Wally hits Roy over the head "It isn't me he's in love with" my eyes widen as Wally realises what he said and slaps his hand over his mouth "Oh Shit" I glare at him.
"Awh does little Dicky have a crush" Roy says, making fun of me.
"Shut up dude. Seriously not in the mood" I say trying to make a point.
"Awh, someone's sexually frustrated" he continues, my fist twitches.
"Dude leave him alone ok" Wally tries to stand up for me.
"It's nothing to be embarrassed about, it's completely normal, you're what 18 now? It's about time you got some"

That's it! I couldn't control my body and what happens next. Before I knew it, I punch Roy in the face, before Wally could stop me. He continues to hold me back, stopping from hitting him again. I look at Roy, he has this shocked expression on his face.

"Stay the hell out of my love life Roy, you don't know anything" I say losing control of my temper for the first time in years.
"Shit. Man, I'm sorry I didn't know you were so sensitive on the issue" he replies, slightly shaken. Before I could reply Bruce and Al walk in.

"What's with all the shouting?" Bruce asks, he had this look on his face which said 'it better be a good reason or else'.
"It's nothing Bruce, I was just telling Wally and Roy to stop arguing" he nods accepting my answer and turns and walks out of the lounge.
"Breakfast Master Richard? Master Wally, Master Roy and Master Conor?" we all nod our heads.
"Thanks Al" he nods and leaves the lounge. Roy walks up to me.

"Sorry man, it was just a joke, I'll be more careful next time" he apologises
"It's forgotten" we shake hands and then he pulls me into a one armed 'bro hug'. Ah I'm lucky to have such good friends.

"Sorry to interrupt the bro bonding" we both look at Wally "but you still haven't told us where you went this morning"

"It doesn't matter, just needed to get out and get some fresh air" Roy and Conor seem to accept my answer, but from the 'you will tell me later look' from Wally, he didn't.
"Ok, now that we know that answer why don't we go watch TV or something" Roy says with a bored expression.
"Sure, sounds good" I answer, I go to walk towards the TV room but Wally grabs my arm.
"You guys go ahead, I need to ask Rob something"

Roy and Conor walk out of the lounge, Wally drags me towards the sofa and makes me sit down.
"Ok, now it's just the two of us" I give him a fake confused look, he rolls his eyes "Don't act dumb, I know you. Where'd you really go this morning?"
"I went to see Artemis" I can't lie to him, I never could. His eyes show confusion.
"Why?" he asks
"I wanted to see why she ended things with you, sorry man I didn't want to go behind your back, but I know you wouldn't have let me go" a small smile appears on his face.
"Thanks for trying dude, but part of me is happy things are over. It wasn't right between the two of us for a while, I knew she missed being a member of the team." He sighs and his smile widens "You're a good friend Dick, Conor would be stupid to turn you down"

I felt my heart break at that moment, and it was simply because I realise just now in this very moment I might lose the chance to be with Wally. As soon as Wally finishes that sentence, a loud, angry 'What the hell' could be heard throughout the mansion. It had just dawned on both of us, Supey's super hearing. Shit! Conor had heard what we said. Big bangs can be heard coming towards our location. My eyes stay fixated on the door, however I'm sure Wally's expression mirrors my own terrified expression. We both gulp and await our fate as a very pissed Conor enters our line of sight.
