Against his better judgment, Richard went to work the next day. Maryanne insisted that she was fine and appeared to be alright. Richard asked their friends and family to check on Maryanne every now and then. All agreed to, right away. Maryanne was once again in the nursery trying to get her three babies to stop crying. After about ten minutes, Maryanne placed Eily back in her crib while she continued to wail. "I'm sorry," Maryanne said through tears, "I can't do this." With that, Maryanne left the nursery and then the house.
Robert and Amy brought Charlotte home from the hospital that very day. When they walked in, the Barones were ready to greet them. "Hey," Robert said as he smiled. In fact, he couldn't stop smiling. "Is Maryanne home? She hasn't met Charlotte yet?"
"She hasn't?" Marie asked.
"No, but that doesn't surprise us," Robert answered.
"She hasn't been herself lately," Amy added.
"We think she's having trouble adjusting to life with the triplets. Anyone would," Robert said.
"I'll go see if she's home," Ray said. He had the feeling that something was wrong and decided to check on his sister. He heard the babies screaming and went upstairs expecting to see the same sight as the day before. Only this time, there was no Maryanne. Ray ran through the mansion looking and calling for his sister. When he couldn't find her, he called next door.
"Whoa, Ray, slow down," Robert said, "what are you talking about? Are you sure? We'll be right over?"
"What's going on?" Marie asked in a panic.
Robert was in disbelief, "Maryanne's not there. The babies are screaming and she's not there."
Everyone rushed next door including Amy and the baby. Ray was right. Maryanne wasn't in the house. They called Richard and Cybill to see if they had seen or heard from her, but nothing. Everyone rushed to the Thorpe house. They broke off into pairs with Amy, Richard, and Cybill waiting at the house with the girls.
Frank and Ray had called Debra and Marie to tell them that they found Maryanne. The women were close and decided to rush over to where their husbands were. They found Maryanne standing in the middle of a pond with her back to them. "Is she alright?" Marie asked.
"We don't know," Ray answered, "we've been trying to get her attention."
Frank took off his socks and shoes before stepping into the pond. He made his way over to his daughter until he was facing her. "Hey, you okay?" Nothing, "come on. Let's get you home." Frank took his daughter by the arm and led her to where everyone was standing. Ray took his sister's hand to help her out. She had no shoes or socks on, was wearing sweats, had no makeup on, her face was tear-stained, and her hair was a mess. In truth, they couldn't believe this was their Maryanne. Frank sat in the back seat and held his daughter the entire way back to her house. Everyone was devastated when they saw her. Frank took her over to the couch and sat with her. Richard sat on the other side. Marie had gone next door to get Frank a pair of dry pants.
Marie returned and handed Frank some pants to change into. "Maryanne," Marie took her daughter's hand, "let's go upstairs and get you out of those wet clothes." Maryanne stood without saying a word. Marie wrapped her arm around her daughter and took her upstairs. Debra and Amy followed to help. "Is there anything, in particular, you'd like to wear?" Marie asked as they entered the master bedroom.
"No," Maryanne answered quietly.
"Debra, could you find a comb?" Marie asked.
Debra went to the bathroom while Amy sat with an arm around the woman she considered to be her sister. Marie walked back over and helped her daughter change into dry clothes. Debra brought a comb out and handed it to Marie who gently combed her daughter's hair. "There, now it won't be all knotted." Marie looked at her daughter, "you know that you can talk to us about anything? We, I won't judge you." Maryanne didn't say anything, "Teresa, do you want to talk?"
"No, mom, but thank you." Maryanne stood and hugged her mother, "I think I'm going to lie down."
Marie, Debra, and Amy stood in shock. Maryanne hadn't even responded with irritation to her mother using her birth name. The three women left the room and Richard stayed with his wife. Marie took her daughters-in-law to another room. "I need to talk. I have never seen her like this. She is so broken and I can't even see Maryanne when I look into her eyes. I mean, there's so much sadness and despair." Marie was now crying, "I don't know what to do." Debra and Amy hugged the woman and were crying as well. The three returned to the living room where their husbands were also emotional. Frank actually put his arm around Marie and held her close to him. Ray and Robert did the same with Debra and Amy.
"What now?" Ray asked.
"I think we should let Richard tell us what to do," Frank said. "She might be our daughter and your sister, but she's his wife and the mother of his children." Frank looked at his wife, "we told him that we would be here for them and to tell us what he needed."
"Good," Marie said softly.
Everyone sat there quietly while they tried to take it all in.
