Maryanne was not satisfied with what the doctor had said. She hadn't been able to drive and could barely stand up. Marie and Frank took on more responsibilities with the girls to help their daughter rest more. Maryanne hated being laid up.
"Cybill! Thank God!" Maryanne yelled when her friend walked into her bedroom. "You have got to get me out of here." Maryanne grabbed her friend's arm tightly.
"Ow, nails, nails, nails!"
"I'm so bored," Maryanne groaned.
"I know, honey, but you have to rest."
"I am so used to all the work that goes into taking care of the girls. You know I'm actually plotting against Dr. Dick again."
"Really?"
"I have nothing else to do!"
"We could watch television."
"I've watched everything."
"We could look at magazines."
"I've looked at them all."
"Read books?"
"Read them."
"Play games?"
"Played them."
"Okay, so there's nothing to do," Cybill said.
"Cybill, I appreciate you trying to help, but the next time you try, could you be a little better at it?"
"I could leave if you want," Cybill teased.
"No, please don't," Maryanne begged.
"Hello, Cybill," Marie said as she entered the room.
"Hey, how you doing?"
"I'm doing well, dear, and you?"
"I have nail marks in my arm, but other than that I'm good."
"Maryanne, how do you feel?"
"I'm bored out of my mind."
"Please don't take us back down that road," Cybill begged Marie.
"Well, you need to walk around some. The doctor said that you need to rest, but laying in bed too much could make it worse," Marie told her daughter. Maryanne pulled the covers back and moved to sit on the edge of the bed. Cybill and Marie held onto Maryanne as she slowly stood. "Do you want to go outside?"
"Sure," Maryanne answered. Marie and Cybill helped Maryanne make her way downstairs and outside before helping her settle on a chair.
"So, did you and Richard find out what you're having?" Cybill asked.
"No, we've been so preoccupied with my blood pressure. I don't want to know."
"Maryanne, what's wrong?" Cybill asked.
Maryanne started to cry, "I can't do this. I can't have five children under the age of two. It's just too much."
"Oh, honey," Cybill sat on the chair and held her friend. She didn't know what to say because she honestly couldn't understand what Maryanne was going through.
"Damn, now I have to pee," Maryanne stopped crying a little.
"Here I'll help you up," Cybill pulled Maryanne up but caught her as she began to fall to the ground. "Marie! Frank! Help!" Cybill tried her best to get her pregnant friend back on the chair. Marie and Frank came rushing out and helped Cybill get Maryanne on the lounge chair.
"Maryanne," Marie tried to get her daughter to come to, "Maryanne, come on sweetheart, wake up." Marie doesn't know how, but she held it together. Maryanne's eyes started to flutter, "she's coming to," Marie said to Cybill, "come on, dear. That's it."
Maryanne opened her eyes and moaned, "what happened?"
"You fainted as soon as you stood up," Cybill said.
"How did I land?" Maryanne became a bit worried.
"Cybill caught you before you could hit the ground," Frank said.
"Thank you," Maryanne felt like her head was somewhere else.
"Honey, how are you feeling?" Cybill asked.
"I'm kind of woozy and tired."
"Do you need us to get you to a hospital?" Marie asked.
"Not yet, I'm not really sure."
"I'm going to call Richard," Cybill said as she went inside. Frank went in too in order to give his wife and daughter some time alone.
"Mom," Maryanne said softly, "I'm so scared."
"I know, dear, but try to not get worked up again. I can't imagine what you're going through, but sweetheart, you can't get upset right now."
"I know," Maryanne was exhausted, "can I take a nap?"
"Sure, I'll make sure the umbrella is over you so you don't burn."
"Mom, will you stay with me?"
Marie was surprised by her daughter's question. She and Maryanne had a closer relationship and Maryanne had asked her mother to come out and stay, but never with her while she was resting. "Sure, I'll stay with you."
Maryanne woke up an hour later with her mother still by her side, "how long have I been asleep?"
"Just an hour. Why don't you go back to sleep?"
"No, I have to pee. That's why I stood up, to begin with."
"I'll help you, but give yourself a few minutes to wake up. Your father brought your wheelchair out. When you feel up to standing, I'll help you into it and then in the bathroom."
After about five minutes, Marie helped her daughter into her wheelchair. "Ma, I don't know how much longer I can take this."
"I know, honey. I wish you didn't have to deal with this." Marie helped Maryanne sit on her couch and put her feet up. Marie was praying that this would go away in the third trimester, but she had a feeling things were going to get worse.
