without further ado, i present to you... The Arcanes *hehe that rhymed... OK I stop talking now!
A figure shrouded in shadows clicked on the keyboard furiously, the edges of their cloaks swishing busily at their ankles.
As their companion applied the finishing touches to the contraption, adding springs and dials to cover intricate mechanics, they stared intently at their screens, decoding some text.
Beeps and whirring noises saturated the room. A breeze filled the room and pushed the curtain exposing the windows light.
"Close it!" Screamed the figure!
His companion scrambled to get to the window, knocking over stacks of diagrams and blueprints in their way, but the curtain refused to comply with the hands trying to force it back into place.
Abruptly, the breeze picked up until the whole room was filled with paperwork, dancing in the air. The curtains swayed mercilessly and a navy blue smoke filled the room.
A crash sounded upstairs and a scream followed.
Charlie?!" yelled another voice, "What is happening?"
the ground began to shake, the walls began to crack and shower the figures in the dark with bits of concrete.
The lights began to flicker and the tornado in the room was whipping wildly so that the second companion had to hold onto the desks to keep their footing.
The power went out across the entire world with an aggressive crack of lightning.
There was a blinding flash of colourful light.
When the wind finally died down and the power came back on, the figures were gone.
A little eight-year old girl hurried down the stairs to the basement, with a sixteen year-old girl and an eighteen-year old boy on her tail.
Elise walked home with Maisly, her 'friend'. The phrase babysitter was hardly accurate, after all she was eight-and-a-half!
Mommy and Daddy were always too protective of Elise.
Every Monday to Friday, Maisly walked home with her and played Uno with Elise until one of her brothers came home. Sometimes Charlie would invite Maisly to stay for dinner.
Elise and Maisly trudged along the sidewalk in the slight drizzle. Elise hated this sort of rain, if it was going to rain it should pour. Not this crummy drizzle that made her cold and dripped slowly down her back.
Not to mention what it did to Maisly's hair! Maisly's curls were usually tamed by a flat iron, but the slightest bit of rain made her hair poof up like an afro. Elise had never actually seen a person with an afro before, but she was sure that Maisly was sporting the afro style today.
Elise glanced at Maisly with a wicked grin, then jumped in a colossal puddle and soaked herself and Maisly to the bone.
"Ah!" Maisly yelped! Maisly ran her fingers through her hair, trying to tame her curls. Suddenly Elise didn't feel so down.
Maisly suddenly smiled, jumped into the next closest puddle, and splashed water at Elise.
Elise screamed and ran away, but burst into giggles. Elise stooped down, kneeling in a puddle in front of her house and splashed Maisly.
Soon Maisly and Elise were having a full out water war in front of her house.
Maybe Maisly wasn't all bad.
After about three hours Elise was shivering and her lips were blue. Elise didn't want to go inside but she also didn't want to die of getting too cold. She could never remember what that thing was called.
Maisly made hot chocolate and let Elise sit on the couch while she drank it.
When Elise was done her hot chocolate, which was about three minutes from the time that she had been given her steaming mug, Maisly stood up and got out the Uno cards.
Maisly shuffled the cards, then looked up at Elise, "Five or seven?"
"What time is it?"
"About six"
Well we don't have enough time for seven; so five cards," Elise decided.
Maisly's hair had calmed down a little after being inside for a bit.
Elise was in the middle of absolutely demolishing Maisly when Charlie and Adrian walked in.
Elise jumped up and ran to the door.
"Charlie!" she shrieked!
"Hey!" Charlie greeted her cheerfully.
"Hey Adrian, Hi Charlie," Maisly ducked her head.
Adrian made a low growling noise in his throat, and walked briskly through the room to the kitchen.
Elise grabbed Charlies hand and tugged him after Adrian.
Maisly grabbed the mugs and uno cards and followed the siblings into the kitchen.
"Whats for dinner?" Adrian gestures towards the seemingly empty kitchen.
Maisly groaned inwardly, "I totally forgot! I am so sorry! I was so occupied with Elise that it slipped my mind!"
"It's fine Maisly," Charlie reassured, "We'll make something now."
Adrian pierced Maisly and Charlie with a withering glare, "Seriously! No it is not!". He turned to Maisly, "What do we pay you for any way?!"
Elise stared up at her brother with scared hazel eyes from her hiding place behind Charlie.
Charlie put a protective hand around Elise's shoulders, "That's not fair Adrian."
Adrian shot one last glare not entirely directed at any one of the three, but in their general direction, and stomped out of the kitchen. He marched right passed the living room, grabbing his sweater on his way out of the door.
Elise's eyes wetted and tears began to trail down her face. Maisly looked near tears herself.
Charlie picked up Elise and held her in his arms. Charlie was her favourite person in the whole wide world! She wished that he didn't have to work. then he could just stay with her all day long, well at least from when she was let out of school until the end of the day.
Elise looked up at him and pulled away, her put her down.
Charlie turned to Maisly now. "I'm so sorry, i wish Adrian wouldn't say things like that. You can stay for supper if you want," he offered this like there was some hidden secret between the two of them.
Elise wondered what it was.
