Despite his upbringing, Alfred wasn't that impressed by boats, but he liked the mechanical improvements made upon them.

It sparked his enthusiasm to see these improvements, these inventions be used for the benefit of his people.

He cheered at the opening of Juliana, was thrilled by the prospect of a steam-powered ferry between New Jersey and New York. For a moment, the joy his people felt, and the pride he felt himself that, despite being less than 100 yrs, his country was so improved and so advanced, stilled the restlessness in him that had lately made his head turn west.

Author's notes:

"his upbringing" is naturally a reference to Alfred/USA being brought up by Arthur/England, whom one might call a boat enthusiast.
