There were many, many, many, things that made a country a nation.
Number one, and the most important one, was to have a Personification of said country. Then there were all the boring, political stuff. Like, for example, acquiring your first Chief Justice, and swearing him in.
If you were lucky (and a HERO!) you would even get accepted by other countries and Nations. MAybe even your ex-guardian.

On 19th of October, 1789, John Jay was sworn in as USA's first Chief of Justice.
