A regular day at the office meant a lot of paperwork, which was actually very boring. Waking up in the morning being aware of the fact that you are going to sit in your desk all day, makes you feel bored and tired. That's how Jay Halstead felt when he got up from his bed, walking towards the bathroom in order to take a hot shower. "Sorry for interrupting." He exclaimed as soon as he noticed Will kissing Natalie in the bathroom. "Just do your job, I'll come back later." He joked. Immediately his legs moved by themselves in the kitchen as his nose caught the smell of baked pancakes and coffee. "At least they did something nice." Grabbing a plate from the cabinet, he got settled on a kitchen chair serving himself a delicious pancake and a cup of coffee.

"Sorry, for earlier." He heard Nat's voice saying.

"I am kinda used to it with Will around, don't worry." He cracked a smile.

"I heard that." The older Halstead exclaimed punching him gently on the back of his head while making his way to the cupboard. "Soo, who's in for Molly's tonight? Our shift ends early." He asked.

"I am way into it, no cases, just paperwork, I am absolutely sure, I'm gonna need a breather."

"Oh yeah like last night that Nat and I had to drag you all the way here."

Jay rolled his eyes and continued taking small sips of his coffee.

As soon as their breakfast was finished, the three people went into different directions each one of them getting ready for work.

Jay was the first one to leave the house reaching the 21st in no time. The front door of the district was opened as usual with Platt guiding the patrol officers to their duties.

"Good morning Sarge." He greeted with a smile on his face but didn't receive an answer, in fact very peculiar cause Trudy would always find a way to mock him. "I'm going up." He announced when he saw it. A crystal clear gaze from her, meaning one thing. Danger. Taking a peek around the district, everything seemed normal, officers came and go on their duties, people who wanted to report a robbery or a small crime or even a disappearance walked inside like nothing had happened. Deep inside he knew though. Platt wouldn't act weird if it was an ordinary day. Pretending to grab some papers from the desk, he scanned every police officer and civilian from the top to the bottom until he found him, he had found the intruder. A man around twenty-five dressed up as a cop talking on the radio, he didn't even know if it was an actual com. "Do you need help with these, Sarge?" He smiled as if everything was normal motioning for her to look at a paper he was currently holding.

"I'm good, Ryan."

His undercover name, that wasn't good at all.

"I'm going upstairs, page us if you need anything."

"Sure." She replied gently.

With the hidden gun always in his ankle in case someone jumped him out of nowhere, Jay climbed the stairs two at a time as he usually did arrive at an empty bullpen. "Hello, is anyone in here?" He yelled.

"Good morning bro." A casual Kevin Atwater exited the break room.

"Have you seen Voight, I want to tell him something."

"He hasn't shown up yet, said Erin called him for a broken pipe or something… Don't know, Ryan."

Of course, Erin was a code name for the cage, there always was an escape plan in case something happened to Intelligence during their stay in their home.

"I am gonna call her, see if she needs any help."

"' Kay man." Kevin took a deep breath before his friend disappeared out of the room.

Descending the stairs to the garage, Jay knew that he had to be careful enough if he wanted to get all his friends out of the cage without any consequences. Reaching the door in no time, he opened it just an inch only to see his family locked up and two men with SWAT uniforms watching over them with their guns raised. From their expression, you could see that none of them was scared on the contrary they were already planning their break out in their heads. "Think Jay, think." He whispered to himself as he looked at them one more time.

"Kevin, Erin says a second hand would be nice." He exclaimed returning at the bullpen, meeting with a man, probably a brother of the guy downstairs, they were look-alike only this one was a bit older. "Can I help you sir?"

"I am positive that you can." Making an evil grin, the man pulled a gun out pointing at him.

"I suggest you don't do that. This is a police station, If we get you, you'll be in for life."

"Who said you will arrest me? Now." He said over his com when suddenly gunshots were heard all over the building.

Without wasting time, Jay nodded at his friend who jumped into action. Grabbing the criminal's neck, he managed to knock him down, leaving him on the floor unconscious.

"Alright, Kev, you have to trust me on this. Cuff him and I'll go help the others."

"You can't do that alone."

"Somebody has to assist Platt downstairs."

Another sound of gunshots was echoed followed by screams.

"Be careful."

"U too."

Without wasting time, the young detective pulled out his gun and ran downstairs breaking the door recklessly, checking if his team was hurt with a quick look. Bullets were flying around as he tried to approach and free them which were dodged easily. All the skills he was taught back in Afghanistan had just come in handy. Raising his weapon only once, he pulled the trigger watching one of them falling down on the ground. The other charged at him before he reached the cage, throwing him a couple of meters away, instantly hitting him in the head with the back on the rifle he was holding. One punch after another and soon Jay's ribs hurt like hell but it didn't matter. He was gonna save his friends even if he had to sacrifice his own life. A kick to the other's man gut was enough to catch him off guard and knock him out.

"The keys are upstairs." He announced breathing heavily. "I'll…"

"Jay he's running." Hailey's warning voice was more than enough to raise the adrenaline into his body and make him follow the other offender upstairs.

As both of them arrived at the bullpen, the same scenery as before dominated the place. Punch after punch from both sides, Halstead eventually made it to the stairs. If they managed to get to the front desk, Platt would definitely take the man down. Besides, Kevin must have taken the others down because you could listen to his voice only.

"Give it up, detective, you have nowhere to go."

Taking a small step to the tiny rung of the staircase, he managed to grab his hidden small gun, nevertheless, he never expected the man to attack him sending them both downstairs, still fighting while falling.

"Stop right there, you under arrest." A determined patrol officer grabbed the man from the back of his uniform, tackling him on the ground.

Jay tried to sit up but the burn on his ribs was too strong to permit him to do any movement.

"Jay, you okay bud?"

"Go get the others." He exclaimed breathing heavily making one more attempt to get back on his feet.

"No, no, no, stay down, I'm calling 911." That was the voice of Trudy whose figure appeared above him in less than a second.

"I'm alright, just need some help."

"Halstead, you are not, let me radio for an ambulance."

"The others?"

"No fatalities or injuries, don't worry. Let us treat you."

"Really Platt, it's pointless, I'll be fine."

The woman looked at him with a –if you don't get help, I am going to kill you myself- look before assisting him on a chair. "I need a glass of water in here, please." Taking a once over at him, she was ready to speak when she noticed the rest of Intelligence running down by their colleague's side, each one of them asking him about his health.

"Guys, I am fine, really," Jay said holding his ribcage. Truth to be told, every single move he made seemed like a feat, the aching was unbearable.

" . Now. It's an order. Ruzek, Atwater take him there, the rest of us will stay in to take care of the district and will join you later." Voight announced. At this time, couldn't change his mind, so it was absolutely wrong for the young detective to try and walk away from the situation. All he received was a big speech, a lecture like the one a couple of weeks ago when he was shot after chasing his father's murderer.

Adam and Kevin put him on the back seat in a lying position, starting the car immediately in order for him to get proper treatment as soon as possible.

"How do you feel, Jay?" Adam asked, taking a peek at his friend. The worry overtook him as he noticed the shades of paleness that his buddy had started to show on his face.

"Good," Jay mumbled.

"The truth."

"Hurts a lot to talk."

"Alright, stay down and we'll take you to Will as soon as possible."

Jay nodded patiently waiting for his arrival in the ED ashamed of the fact that he would have to face his brother again while being on a gurney, helpless to perform even the simplest task.

It wasn't more than ten minutes when their ride came to a stop in front of the emergency department of Chicago Med where two paramedics waited each one standing next to a stretcher. "Probably someone notified them." Jay thought as the back door of the vehicle opened, relieving the faces of the two men. Being settled on the gurney with their assistance required much effort as every single fiber of his body hurt at the moment. Before the paramedics announced the details about his conditions, another familiar face appeared above him, a worried one with sings of terror in his eyes, his brother, his guardian angel, Will Halstead who followed them all the way to trauma bay 1.

"Jay, what happened?"

Before he replied two pairs hands grabbed the older Halstead by the shoulders escorting him out, stupid rules… Soon his t-shirt was ripped in half by scissors, leaving him half-naked with probably a huge bruising as he figured out from the looks of his doctor and nurses, Noah Sexton, April, and some unknown. Even with the lightest pressure, big groans escaped his mouth, he couldn't help it. Among the medical terms that were heard in the atmosphere, the only thing he understood was "broken ribs."

"Detective, I need you to stay still as we are about to take some x rays." Someone announced, he didn't see, he was too preoccupied not to think about the needles inserting his skin even if it was for a few seconds.

"As I suspected it, five broken ribs," Noah announced again. Wrapping a bandage around his ribcage carefully, he removed his gloves. "Okay, we're good for now. April, help him wear a gown and reconnect the monitor leads as soon as you are finished, I am sorry, detective, I'll have to admit you, you'll be in your room in a few minutes." He said walking out.

Jay looked at the ceiling and took a deep breath. How did he end up in this mess again? It was less than a month that he was in this exact room, getting stitched up by Rhodes. Will had already enough drama in his life, he didn't need more of that. The silence in the room didn't last long, as three sets of footsteps were echoed in his ears.

"Hey buddy, how do you feel?" Adam asked leaning on the railing.

Jay didn't reply.

"Noah said that you have to stay for a few days." Will reminded stroking his brother's hair. "What you did was heroic, you saved a bunch of people."

"Guys, can I have a word with my brother?"

Nodding, the two men walked out of the trauma bay, leaving the two brothers alone. Will grabbed the chair that had been placed on the corner of the room and put it next to his brother's bed.

"I'm sorry." Jay exclaimed.

"What for?"

"Worrying you. I promised myself that after my last shooting, I wouldn't be in this state again. But… I had no choice today, I was the only one…"

"Hey stop, okay? Just stop. The way you acted this morning was the proper one in order to save your friends, your team, everyone would have taken action if their second family had been trapped in a cage being threatened by two criminals. Don't feel bad for your outcome, you have to take into consideration the broader success."

The man in the bed sighed. "I guess you're right."

The time passed by quickly as the four friends chatted and having been joined by the other members of Intelligence, they all moved to Jay's spacious room each one settling himself in a different spot, altogether though, for the man who had just rescued them.

"So how long will you stay?" Antonio asked.

"Will says for three days, it's actually good, I expected more."

"I believe three is enough for you… There's no way for any of us to escape your nagging about hospitals." Hailey joked rubbing his left leg gently.

Before he managed to say another word, the door of the room opened divulging Trudy Platt with two huge plastic bags in her hands. Walking in the woman left them a couple of feet away from the bed and approached the injured man ignoring everyone else which was not weird at all, as it was a manner of Trudy to show how much she cared for everyone in the district. "I brought you some magazines, flowers and some donuts is that okay?" She asked smiling widely.

"Uhh sure… Thanks."

"I would do anything for my favorite detective."

"You didn't need to but thanks again."

"What are you looking at people? Our Jay needs rest, go home, go, go." She said escorting them one by one outside leaving Halstead a bit stranded.

"You didn't have to shove them out, you know."

"Shut up Halstead, you saved my life and I am going to take care of you. Mouch is also coming so we can watch the Hawks…"

Jay took a deep breath, creating a fake smile on his face, preparing himself for a night with Sargeant Trudy Platt, it would be an adventurous one, that's the only sure thing.
