"How long was it swollen?" Crockett asked while examining Jay's injured wrist.
Being only the two of them in the room, making it comfortable for the detective to reveal the truth about his injured hand. If his brother was present, a fight without an ending would have started.
"It's been almost two months..." Jay hesitated to say out loud…
"What?" The doctor looked at him in amazement.
Jay Halstead was known for his hate of hospitals but nobody would ever have thought he would take it too far.
"It doesn't hurt, alright? The fact that is still swollen brought me here in the first place. Will doesn't even know that I am in the ED."
"Alright." Marcel took a deep breath. "First of all, I need an X-ray to make sure that's it's not broken, then we'll go from there. Okay?"
Jay nodded.
Ordering April and Monique to prepare Jay for the X-Ray, he stepped a few meters away towards the exit taking a few peeks outside in case Will appeared out of the blue.
Hailey Upton was sitting on an uncomfortable chair in the waiting room, reading a magazine while waiting for her partner. It'd been too long since she found herself looking at a celebrity's magazine. All those ups and downs of these people didn't even bother her, however, there was no other option to kill her time. She was satisfied for the fact that Jay was in there. Her persistence and pressure led them into this place, as he was certain that his injury was minimal. Although Hailey could see his pain, his agony every time his gun was off, every time he changed his clothes or picked up something heavy.
"Hailey? Hey. What are you doing here?" A familiar voice snapped her out of her distraction.
Settling herself in a cozier position, she cleared her throat before replying. "Hey there. Uhmm…" She hesitated at first. "Jay had a thing…"
"Jay? My brother's inside?"
"Yeah, sit down for a sec." She motioned for him to join her so she could explain the situation to the young doctor without worrying him but it was too late, Will's form had already disappeared from her view.
"What the hell, Jay? Why didn't you tell me? Why are you here? Will burst in the room yelling like crazy, his facial feature more visible than ever showing his anger. "Why is he in a gown?" Will asked ready to break every single thing around him.
"Will, you know it's protocol. Jay is fine, he just had an accident on the job. Just stay calm alright?"
If you looked closer, you would see the doctor's face blushing so hard, that you couldn't distinguish his face from the rest of his body. Before stream started coming out of his hears, he knew he had to stay calm otherwise someone would get killed in the hospital.
"We're gonna go upstairs for an MRI, will you join us, Will?"
"Of course." He answered giving a strong glare at his brother.
Twenty minutes. Twenty whole minutes which left like an eternity for the one of them at least. Being in a remoted room, inside a machine lying on your chest with one hand completely still and your underwear visible to the audience, like Superman wasn't easy. It required a lot of patience that Jay had ran out of. Millions of thoughts crossed his mind during the examination. As to what Hailey was doing. A deep childish voice in him, was constantly whispering that he shouldn't have talked to her again because it was her fault. If she hadn't dragged him in the ED, he wouldn't have suffered so much. Despite the fact that she was right, he wouldn't admit it, not in a million years.
His patience had almost run out when someone from outside called his name. The screeching of the door warned him that it was the end of the examination and the beginning of his very big lecture from his brother.
A woman around 40s in nursing scrubs walked by his side dragging a wheelchair. Dizziness was his first sensation as he got up from the metal bed, followed by a feeling of nausea. However, he wasn't alone in this, the woman had noticed his discomfort and helped him settle himself on the wheelchair, pulling him out of the room slowly.
"Everything's alright, Jay?" Will asked worry clearly written all over his face.
"Yeah why wouldn't it be?"
"You will return to your room until the results are out, okay?"
"Is that necessary, man? Someone else might need that bed more than I do."
"Yes." Will simply replied.
Being back on the ED wasn't that perfect actually. He watched as people passed by, families come and go others happily marching towards the exit, others bursting into tears, gurneys being pushed in carrying patients with severe injuries, kids being admitted for a sickness or a trauma. This was a better occupation than starting a dialogue with Will, who kept staring at him like he was a murderer in his trial.
"Sooo…." Will said. "What exactly happened?"
"Nothing."
"I can see that…"
"What do you want me to say, man? I got hurt, okay? Not the first time and definitely not the last."
"That's what I am afraid of… Every time, you walk in here, I fear that I won't see you again, that you will never walk out of here. Every time you are on this bed, it's haunting me, you get me. It's hunting her…" He pointed out to the door where Hailey was currently at.
Before Jay had the chance to reply, Marcel got inside, holding some papers in his hands. "As we expected it, there is a fracture on the scaphoid bone of your left hand. We can't put it on a cast so I suggest that you wear a narthex for three weeks and we will go from there."
"Good. Thanks, doc."
"And Will, don't give him a hard time."
The doctor smiled punching his brother on the shoulder a bit. "Come on, Jay, go home."
"Yes sir." Jay joked smiling. At least everything was okay with Will.
