The Team comes to terms with the loss of the jewel, and plots their next move.
Spencer awoke, and the world around him seemed strange.
It appeared that he was in a medical bay of some sort, lying in a convalescent bed. Glancing down, he saw his right arm nestled in a sling bandage, while his body from the chest down was tucked snugly beneath white sheets.
Stirring from slumber, he tried to move his limbs, only to feel a dull ache as he exerted force on them. With great effort, he pulled himself out of bed and slowly began limping around the room.
"Hello?" he called out to nobody in particular. "Is anybody there?"
He suddenly heard the pitter-patter of footsteps outside the med bay door. Moments later, Martha burst into the room with a worried expression on her face.
"Oh my God, Spencer!" she cried, rushing to grab hold of him. "Are you okay? I thought you'd never wake up!"
"I'm fine, Martha," he reassured her. "Where are we?"
"Back aboard Jurgen's airship," Martha told him. "We lost the Monkey's Egg, and we almost lost you too."
"What!" exclaimed Spencer indignantly. "How could we have lost the jewel? That was the thing we were supposed to hold on to!"
At that moment, B1 came into the room, followed by Fridge, Eddie, Alex and B2. Jake was the next to arrive, with Jurgen not far behind. They needed to bring Dr Bravestone up to speed with the latest developments.
"You saved Bethany's life," Martha explained. "I don't know why you did it, given that she had two lives and you only had one! You got crushed by a giant golden ball and we all freaked out, thinking we'd lost you for good."
"It was Jake over here who saved you," said Fridge, gesturing to the medic. "He basically brought you back from the dead."
"Thanks," said Spencer gratefully, acknowledging the other man's deed. He finally saw what great luck it had been that the role of medic had been given to Jake. The feeling of euphoria lasted only a moment before being replaced by horror at the loss of the jewel.
"But the jewel!" he cried. "What happened to it?"
"It was either the jewel or the little girl," answered Jurgen brusquely. "I only had time to save one."
"Bethany, is that true?" Spencer asked the little girl.
Little B2 nodded. "I almost fell off a ledge while running out of the city," she replied. "Mr Jurgen here was the one who stopped me."
Spencer was stunned to hear this. He could hardly believe that the same man who'd brutally decapitated him was humane enough to save a little girl's life. For once, Jurgen had done the honourable thing – but had it cost them all the game?
"It's great to hear that, Bethany," said Spencer at last. "But now we've gotta think about what we're gonna do, given that Manjeet now has two jewels."
"We have the revolver," said Jurgen, stepping forward. "We only need to give it to Jayne. The Falcon Jewel is still with her; she's our only hope of stopping Manjeet now."
"But why didn't Manjeet physically come to stop us?" asked Martha.
"Yeah!" agreed B1. "We saw what Spencer did to her – she was just a phantom or a ghost-like thingy!"
"Jumanji sorcerers are weak against gold," Jurgen explained. "They're invulnerable to conventional weaponry, but don't stand a chance against precious metals. That's why Jayne needs this magical firearm," he said, cradling the golden weapon in his hands.
"Do we have any idea where she could be now?" asked Alex grimly.
"We could always check the map!" answered B1, holding the aged paper up to view. "It says:
Your only hope rests with a woman,
A famed enigma, of whom legends are spoken;
Seek out the face of one who does beguile,
A noble lady possessing a knowing smile."
The four teenagers turned to look at one another. It can't be that simple, they all thought.
"The Mona Lisa?" asked Fridge incredulously.
"Does the game actually want us to go to Paris, France?" said Martha in puzzlement.
"Apparently so!" said Spencer, turning to Jurgen the Brutal. "Jurgen," he asked, "did Jayne ever say anything about her love for art?"
Jurgen stopped to think for a moment. "Now that you mention it," he said slowly, "that is certainly a possibility. Jayne's always had an eye for things of value and high quality – I could definitely see her making a beeline for an art gallery."
Spencer nodded. That was a start, and was the best lead they had at the moment. Suddenly, he thought of something important and looked around for his grandfather.
"Grandpa," he asked, "do you think you could get us into the Louvre?"
"I already know how to do that!" cackled Eddie triumphantly. "I've been there twice before, and I know the perfect way for us to get in!"
The players are off to the Musée du Louvre! What will they find there? Stay tuned and please leave a review!
