Chapter 4

Snape couldn't believe what was happening to him. In just three weeks his world had turned upside down and back again tenfold. Just thinking about it made him sick to his stomach. And worse, Potter and Malfoy knew something was up. They seemed to have developed some sort of friendship, or mutual understanding. He shook his head as he headed to the Great Hall for dinner. Bloody Malfoy and Potter, leave it to them to come together just to annoy him. He sat in his usual spot next to Minerva. He glanced over at the students, Draco was staring at Harry. Harry was staring at Snape. Ugh. Snape looked at the ceiling. He had to stop those two before they found out. Potter was nosy beyond belief, and Malfoy… well he could be in other people's business when he wanted to. Snape looked at Draco. He was gazing at Potter with concern, like he was scared for him. Like he wanted to help him with whatever was troubling him. To be fair Potter looked like the walking dead. His robes were hanging off of him even more than usual, there were dark circles under his eyes, and his skin was gray looking. Like a vampire. Within a few minutes Potter stood up and Draco followed suit, they glanced at each other. And both of them left the Great Hall not bothering to pretend they were going different directions. Potter's little friends whipped their heads around in shock as Potter and Malfoy left the hall together. Snape waited a few moments before following them.

Draco and Harry hadn't said a word to each other since they'd left the hall together. Draco glanced at Harry from the corner of his eye. Harry was looking ahead of them, with a blank face. Damn. He had a poker face.

"Why are you staring at me?" Harry asked unashamedly. Draco felt himself turn red as a tomato.

"I'm not." he muttered looking down.

"Yeah you were." If possible Draco turned even redder. He hadn't been staring, not exactly anyway. They reached the library and this time Harry glanced at Draco.

"Shall we." he said tonelessly.

"Yeah…" Draco hurried in and Harry followed him. Madam Bones was nowhere in sight, Draco and Harry sat at a table and stared at each other for a beat.

"So." Draco said, clearing his throat. "Shall I start."

Harry spread his hands. Was that a yes?

"Uh." Maybe this wasn't such a good idea. Why was Draco doing this anyway? To bribe Harry into telling him what was wrong with him? Right.

"Well you see-"

"Malfoy. I need to see you in my office." Snape. Did he have to be in Draco's business 24/7?

"I'm busy professor." Draco snapped turning around to look at him.

"Not anymore." snapped Snape grabbing Draco's collar and pulling him out of his seat. He wanted to punch him. He'd been so close. He looked back at Harry but he was already gone. Lucky. Snape dragged him to his office in the dungeon and Draco did his best to drag his feet behind him. Snape shut the door behind them when they entered. Draco pulled himself out of Snape's grasp.

"What do you want?" he said, annoyed.

"I told you to stay away from him." He didn't look angry however as Draco would have expected.

"Why do you even care? You certainly never used to." he muttered looking down at his shoes.

"That is none of your business." Draco didn't say anything. "And don't you have better things to do than bother Potter?" Oh. Draco had forgotten all about what he was supposed to be doing. The Dark Lord would murder him if he knew he was befriending Potter.

"I already have a plan." Draco lied. "I don't need your help."

"I swore to protect you." Snape hissed. Well now he sounded angry.

"And you aren't doing yourself any favors by getting close to him."

"I'm not getting close to Harry." said Draco. Harry. Harry. Harry. Crap.

Snape shook his head in disbelief like he couldn't believe what he was hearing. Draco couldn't believe it himself.

"Now if you'll excuse me." said Draco making a move for the door handle.

"Not so fast." Draco wondered if he could run faster than the professor. Probably. But Snape might just hex him.

"What." He kept his hand on the door.

"If the Dark lord finds out that-"

"He won't." Draco didn't wait another second before bolting out the door. Harry was right outside. Draco muffled a scream.
"Is that why you were talking to me?" Harry yelled. How long had he been there?

"You were trying to get close to me so you could kill me!" Draco pulled Harry away from the door. He didn't want Snape sticking his long nose in their business. Harry yanked his arm out of Draco's grasp.

"You know what! Kill me! I could care less!" He screamed. Draco felt his heart stop in his chest. What?

"Harry… I-" Draco tried to grab his arm. But Harry just ran in the other direction. Draco wanted to run after him, but he decided he needed to talk to someone first.

A couple minutes later he was waiting in front of the Gryffindor's painting. The Fat Lady was muttering under her breath about Slytherin scum but he ignored her. Hopefully Weaselbee hadn't already come in. Draco quickly got impatient.

"How long have I been here?" he asked the Fat Lady. She crossed her arms and looked up. Draco rolled his eyes. Fine then. He watched Longbottom come in and glance at Draco incredulously. He willed himself to stare at his shoes and not just go to his dormitory.

"What are you doing here?" He looked up, hopeful. Granger. He felt his smile fall. And the Weasley girl, Ginny. They would just have to do.

"I need to tell you something. It's about Harry." Draco hoped he didn't sound desperate. Granger was already heading inside but Ginny grabbed her arm.

"Wait, what if somethings wrong?" Granger looked annoyed but she looked at Draco.

"Spit it out I have homework." she snapped glaring at him with hatred all over her face.

"Something's wrong with H- Potter." he said quickly. Granger rolled her eyes and started to walk away again but Ginny stayed.

"We know. After Sirius died… He hasn't been the same." She said slowly.

"No. Something's actually wrong with him. It's like…" He thought for a moment. "He doesn't feel anything anymore." Well not usually anyway.

Granger had stopped. She looked like she was thinking.

"What if…" she said.

"What?" asked Draco and Ginny at the same time.

"Maybe he's not just grieving. Maybe he's under a spell." She looked at Draco. "A spell that you put on him!" Honestly. For all her brains Granger could be rather stupid sometimes.

"Then why would I be here!" He crossed his arms angrily.

"Oh." She had the grace to look ashamed. "Right."

"But who would have put it on him?" asked Ginny, biting her lip.

"You-Know-Who?" said Hermione, looking at Draco. Why would he know? He knew why he would know but they didn't know that.

"He would've killed him by now…" Draco shook his head. "I don't know."

"Where is he now?" asked Ginny.

"I don't know." said Draco.

"Weren't you with him?" snapped Granger.

"Snape interrupted us." After a beat. "He doesn't want Harry and I talking to each other."

"Since when does Snape care about Harry?" asked Hermione, biting her lip.

"Some really crazy crap is going on." whispered Ginny. Draco looked at her. She blushed.

"Someone really should be keeping an eye on Harry." Hermione sighed. "We better split up to look for him."

"I'll go around Snape's office." Draco said immediately. Hermione raised an eyebrow. He shrugged.

"I'll go to the Great Hall." said Ginny. Both of them looked at Hermione.

"So you're going to leave the rest of the castle to me!" she snapped. Draco nearly laughed.

Snape had heard Malfoy's and Potter's exchange (it had been right outside his door). He couldn't help but shake the feeling that something was wrong with Potter. He probably should start calling himself Harry. But why bother? It's not like he could tell him. He decided to follow the boy after he ran from Draco. Just to… Snape didn't know what he would do. He had no idea how to comfort a distraught teenager. They were much too dramatic. Every emotion amplified tenfold. After Draco had gone in the other direction he'd followed Potter. The boy never even looked over his shoulder. He ran into the restroom. Severus wondered if he should follow.

"Professor." Draco. Severus turned and glared at him. How long had he been contemplating going into the bathroom? Much too long.

"Yes?" Draco had never been one to squirm under his gaze but he certainly was now.

"Have you seen Harry?" he finally blurted out. Severus was very tempted to point Draco in the opposite direction but instead he merely inclined his head towards the bathroom. It wasn't like Draco could do any worse than him.

"Harry?" Draco called. Silence answered him. He walked into the bathroom cautiously leaving Snape standing there. He wondered for a moment if he should leave but he decided against it.

"What do you want? Come to finish me off?" Potter's voice wasn't angry, just tired and empty.

"No. No. I'm not going to… do that. I wanted to say I'm sorry."

"For what?" His voice was raspy. Severus moved so he could see the two of them. Harry was standing by the sink, his arms grasped the corners. Draco was behind him looking even paler than usual.

"For whatever is bothering you." Draco's voice was soft. There was no way this boy could kill someone, Severus thought.

"Like you care." muttered Harry. "Can you just leave me alone?"

"No." Harry whirled and turned to face Draco. He seemed unable to make any sort of facial expression. He stared at Draco, then crossed his arms and stormed out of the bathroom. Severus quickly went in the other direction. No need to confront Potter tonight, no need to confront him ever. He should have followed Harry, he really should have.
