PROMPT: A few chapters on the prompt Elizabeth finds out she is pregnant after Henry was supposed to get a vasectomy.
"WHAT?!"
Chapter 1
Henry was working to just get her out of the car and into the farmhouse. Elizabeth could not stop laughing. It was supposed to be just a regular Cranium night but turned into way too many glasses of wine between Elizabeth and Dolly Rassmussen. It had been a long week at the CIA and Elizabeth was looking forward to this night.
"Babe, c'mon the babysitter needs to get home and the girls are going to be up early looking for all of your attention. You need to get out of the car and into bed….with some Tylenol," Henry pleaded.
Elizabeth climbed out of the car, sloppily put her hands around Henry's neck and kissed him. "Have it your way, Captain, but we are definitely not going to sleep when we get into bed."
She walked ahead of him as he watched her sway into the house. He definitely didn't disagree with her, drunk Elizabeth always meant a little more raunchier Elizabeth in bed.
Realizing she was pretty drunk, the teenage babysitter they always used left pretty quickly. Henry was grateful there wasn't the long Mom/babysitter conversation, which happened often if Elizabeth was sober.
He helped Elizabeth up the stairs, begging her to keep quiet as not to wake Allie, who was sound asleep in her crib. Stevie slept through everything. They successfully made it to their bedroom.
Elizabeth turned on Henry and kissed him fast and passionately. In no time, their clothes were strewn around the master bedroom and they were tangled up together in their bed. He ran his hands through her hair as she rode a top of his body. He delighted in watching her get her pleasure from him. He reached up and pulled her down and rolled himself over her. Kissing her to keep her quiet as they reached the pinnacle together.
Morning came faster than they would have wanted. Stevie climbed into their bed looking to snuggle around 6am. Henry snuggled her in as Elizabeth moaned from an agonizing headache. She rolled out of bed and into the bathroom. She then heard Allie call her from her crib. She cracked the bathroom door and gave Henry the look. "I got her," he said.
Elizabeth crawled back in bed and snuggled up next to Stevie, who had fallen back asleep. Mother and daughter slept like that for another hour before the smell of pancakes began to fill the house. Stevie was up and down the stairs before Elizabeth could throw her robe on. Henry's pancakes were a family favorite.
As Elizabeth started down the stairs, a wave of nausea came over her, but faded as quickly as it came.
Weeks later and several different bouts of nausea, led Elizabeth to the Ladies Room at Langley. Her breakfast made a revisit. She felt lousy most of the day and told Isabelle she had come down with something and was heading home.
She called Henry and told him she would pick Stevie up from school since she would be home. Allie was at the UVA day care and would come home with Henry. She stopped at the pharmacy first and picked up two pregnancy tests, trying to remember if there was a night that she might have forgotten to place her IUD. Frustrated because she and Henry had discussed a vasectomy for him but he was procrastinating.
When Henry came in holding Allie in his arms, Elizabeth and Stevie were snuggled on the couch watching "The Doodlebops." Elizabeth was struggling to stay awake while praying she wasn't going to be handed many more years of watching this show. If she was pregnant, this time she privately hoped for a boy.
"Mommy," Allie called out to her when she saw her. Henry leaned down placing his youngest (or who he thought was his youngest) into her mother's lap. Elizabeth and Henry passed each other a look when he leaned over to kiss her.
"You okay? Are you feeling better?" he asked.
"Little bit, yeah. Just tired now," she shrugged as he looked at her.
Walking back towards the kitchen, Henry stated "Pasta for dinner?"
"That would be amazing," she said following him and placing Allie in her high chair.
She grabbed Puffs out of the cabinet and poured a few on her tray. Henry glanced over and joked, "We going to buy a lot more of those soon?"
"Depends on whether you consider 21 months soon?" she asked back raising one eyebrow at him.
"Babe, are you serious?"
"Two tests sitting in that bag serious." She said bluntly.
Henry laughed, "I guess a third will be good."
"Says the man who was supposed to get a VASECTOMY!" she said back raising her voice a little bit.
He came over and wrapped his arms around her from behind, laying a hand on her stomach. "Babe, are you really that upset?"
"I don't know, Henry. Do you think I am thrilled to spend the next 7-plus months puking my brains out and feeling exhausted? Besides, with everything going on with this investigation at work, I don't really have the time to come home for a nap."
"Oohhkay. Let's table this conversation until after bedtime'" Henry replied back to her, rolling his eyes.
"Yes, let's. Maybe if you are lucky my attitude will change with some food in my soon to be oversized belly," she sarcastically answered.
Later that evening, dinner was cleaned up, baths were done and bedtime stories were read. Elizabeth and Henry were sitting on the floor of their bathroom.
"This is a fun Friday night," he said, leaning over and kissing the sweet spot on her neck.
"Henry that's what got us here in the first place," she chuckled as she attempted to push him away.
"Actually, let me remind you it was most likely your drinking night with Dolly, that got us to this amazing moment. For the record, when we talked about the vasectomy, we talked about the possibility of going for three." He leaned in and whispered in her ear, "You brought that up, Elizabeth."
With that, the timer dinged. Henry got up first and looked. He turned to show her. Two lines stared back at them.
He smiled at her. She smiled back.
Three more weeks had passed, Elizabeth had felt awful since taking the test, but then this week symptoms seemed to reside. She found that weird. Her morning sickness had never stopped this soon. She thought to herself "Huh? Maybe it is a boy." It was Henry's late class day. She had the girls in the bathtub, watching them while they played when the first pain hit her. It was more of a cramp.
She read to the girls and put them to bed. Saying goodnight to Allie first. Kissing the top of her head and laying her in her crib with her bunny. Stevie asked her for one more story, as she always did on Henry's late nights. She told her "Just one more." After reading her the story, she kissed her head, gave her a big hug, shut off the light and turned to close Stevie's door a bit. That is when the second cramp hit, this one a little stronger. She looked at her watch and knew Henry would be coming in anytime soon.
She went to the bathroom and then she knew. She had miscarried their third child.
It was only a few minutes, before Henry found her in their bathroom in tears. They had been here before.
He sunk down and sat beside her on the floor, holding her. The same spot they sat in when they got the news. After the tears stopped, he got up and helped her off the floor. He ran her a hot shower and went to their room. He pulled the covers down on her side of the bed and laid out one of his old t-shirts and her pajamas. When she finished her shower, she slid on the clothes and they crawled into bed together. She fell asleep in his arms.
