Chapter III: New World, New Friends
"Have you gotten one yet?!" Peter yelled out from his bivouac. The two set up camp in a relatively dense part of the forest so their camp would be well hidden. A bonus is that they actually set up near a river as well, in which currently is being used by Callum.
"Yeah, I got something!" Callum yelled back. He was in the river with his pants rolled up to his knees, and a wooden spear in his hands, which were holding the fish he had caught, ten if you were wondering. Out by the bank of the river was Ignis, sitting down watching in amusement as his master was hunting fish.
"Alright Ignis lets go back to Peter" Callum instructed getting out of the river. Ignis rose up from the ground and picked up a dead deer with its mouth. You could hear the searing noises as Ignis bit into the flesh. That's what Callum loves about Ignis. He can cook the meat while you walk, well one spot only really.
"Okay, I got some fish and Ignis got the deer. I think were more than good for the two days" Callum said, resting the spear on a near by tree, while Ignis placed the deer down at their feet.
"Well let's get this thing strung up" Peter said with a smile. Antiope did give them supplies for a whole week. A little overkill, but most of it was vegetables and fruits, they needed some sort of protein.
The two brothers set up a little cooking fire and placed the deer over the fire Ignis had made. Callum was descaling the fish and prepared them to be leaned onto the fire. The two took turns turning the spit of the deer until the meat was cooked whilst also snacking on the fish Callum had caught.
"Do you think they're hungry by now?" Callum asked quietly. Peter responded with a smile.
Diana and Cassandra were hidden in the forest, spying on the two brothers. The two were curious about them. They have never seen men on this island before, if there were at some point, they'd probably be dead. Plus, the way their mother and aunt treated them is also another factor.
"I don't see how everyone seems to hate them. They seem pretty nice to me" Cassandra commented observing the two brothers as they were eating.
"Well, they're hatred of men stems from years of conflict. I'm pretty sure just seeing one bring back bad memories." Diana answered solemnly. Cassandra pursed her lips and nodded sadly.
Diana and Cassandra have heard the stories of men invading Themyscira. At first it was because it was uncharted land, then treasure, and finally the women. Every time they hear the stories, they get shivers down their spines and anger wells within them. However, their mother always said that not all men are lustful monsters, and that some are genuinely kind. Luckily for them, they hung around aunt and mother more than Artemis, who is a renowned for her hatred of men. Unfortunately, that behaviour rubbed off on Donna, their eldest sister, being born the same year.
"God… The food looks really good" Cassandra whined, her eyes switching from the deer to fish.
Diana had to agree. They've been spying the two since they left and now four hours have passed. The sun was starting to set, and they were getting hungry. The two stomachs began to rumble and they looked at each other.
"Maybe we should head back?" Diana suggested. Cassandra nodded her head, and before they left, they took one more glance at the boys… They were gone?
"Where did they go?!" Cassandra whisper yelled. The fire was still going, and Callum's dog Ignis was still sitting on the ground, although he was sleeping.
"You guys hungry?" a voice spoke from behind them. The two jumped up, turning around to the voice with their fighting stance.
Diana and Cassandra's eyes softened once they saw Peter holding two sticks of fish with a smile. They then heard some light shuffling behind him, and it was Callum, holding some venison on some palm leaves. The two girls looked at each other confusingly before glaring at the two boys.
"They're not drugged or poisoned" Callum said trying ease the tension in the air. But the two girls didn't budge. Callum and Peter looked at each other and shrugged. The two took a bite from both items to prove it so. "See?" Callum reassured as he walked closer with Peter and gave them the food.
Cassandra and Diana took one more glance from each other and slowly reached their hands out for the food. Once they took a hold, they quickly drew their hands back and became defensive once again.
"Well. If you two wanna join us by the fire. Feel free" Peter said with a smile, walking around the two, back towards the camp. Callum gave them a little wave before jogging lightly to catch up with his brother.
"Do you think we should follow them?" Cassandra asked.
"I don't sense any hostile or ulterior motives from them… Plus" Diana began, turning her head to see the two sitting down and grabbing more food. "Could be a chance for us to learn more about men"
Cassandra took a deep breath and exhaled. "Let's do this then"
The two sisters nodded at each other and began walking towards their campfire. Ignis's ears perked up and faced the two sisters who were approaching them. Diana and Cassandra stopped in their tracks with a gulp. They've heard tales about hellhounds… It's terrifying to see one in the flesh, even though this one was domesticated.
Ignis blinked a couple times before resting its head on it paws, falling back asleep.
The two girls sighed in relief and their attention was caught when they heard Callum trying to stifle his laughter at their reaction.
"Don't worry about Ignis. He only gets angry when people are hostile against me, Peter and some others" Callum explained. The two nodded their heads and sat across from the brothers, and they began slowly eating, every once in while taking a glance at the brothers.
"What are your names?" Peter asked, breaking the uncomfortable silence.
"Uh… Um…" Cassandra stuttered not knowing if she should answer.
"My name is Diana" The beautiful brunette answered, surprising her younger sister.
"M-M-My name i-is… C-Cassandra" The blonde beauty added, her head looking down at her plate of food.
"Nice to meet you two" Callum replied with a warm smile. "I'm Callum, and this is my brother Peter" The young man said, gesturing to the boy to his right.
"So" Callum started taking a quick bite of his venison, "Why were you girls following us?"
Cassandra and Diana glanced at each other before the elder sister spoke up. "You knew we were following you?"
"Yeah. Since we left" Peter answered taking a small leather pouch of water, taking a drink before holding out his hand. The two girls leaned forward and saw a tiny little spider crawl into his hands. "I can see what these little guys can see. Pretty useful huh?"
The two nodded in amazement with Peter and Callum responding with a chuckle.
"So why were you guys following us anyways?" Callum asked, finishing up his food, and placing the leaf plates on the ground.
The two girls also had finished up their meal and huffed in satisfaction with Cassandra speaking up first. "We were just curious is all. Men, as you can see, are not welcome here." She started, garnering solemn looks from the brothers. The young blonde smiled at the two, hoping it would make them more comfortable.
"But seeing how our mother treated you. It just sparked an interest" Cassandra finished.
"An interest?" Peter reiterated.
"We've always heard one side of the story from Artemis, and the other Amazons. Luckily, me and Cassandra were taught by our mother and aunt that not all men are as bad as most of us make them out to be. Seeing how you are the only men currently on this island… We thought we could learn more about your kind" Diana explained, with her sister nodding happily with a smile.
Peter and Callum looked at each other and shrugged. "Well… I don't know if were that much different from men on Earth." Peter started, getting a confused look from the girls.
"You're not from the outside?" Cassandra asked. The two's interest seemed to have piqued more hearing that.
"Well yes we are" Callum started, "Were from Eden. Specifically, were the Guardians of the Underworld" Callum finished, with two girls widening their eyes as their reaction. The two girls suddenly jumped up from their feet and fell to their knees, surprising the two brothers.
"Whoa! Whoa!" Callum shot up as well holding his hands up, confused with the sudden gesture of respect.
"Forgive us! We did not know we were in the presence of Goddess Athena's and Lord Hades champion!" Cassandra pleaded, almost as if it was for her life. She sounded stressed when mentioning the Goddess Athena, for obvious reasons. Diana nodded her head in agreement, their fists clutched tightly into their chest.
"Uhhh…." Peter was speechless.
"No need to apologize to us!" Callum exclaimed walking over to the two. "Please stand up, there's no need to be sorry. It was all just a misunderstanding" Callum continued, hoping the two girls would stand. The two brothers were never used to formality when its directed to them, it made them feel uncomfortable.
Diana and Cassandra glanced at each other and then the brothers. The two nodded and got up slowly, brushing the dirt of their knees.
"How come you didn't say anything earlier?" Diana started; her face contorted into worry. "If you would have mentioned being the Champions of Eden, they would have stopped trying to hunt you down."
Callum and Peter sighed heavily before the spider guardian spoke up.
"We could have yeah." Peter began, throwing some dry sticks into the fire. The fire crackled at his feat, with his face becoming saddened. "But then the respect we would've gotten would be fake you know?"
"They would only respect us because of the title we have, not for who we are. It sucks being only known and respected for being the Champions of the gods!" Peter finished, adding some exaggerated grandeur into the last four words.
"It might be hard to earn the Amazon's respect but…" The wolf guardian said, looking up through the branches and leaves, into the starry sky. "I'd rather have them respect me and brother as Callum and Peter. Not the Champions of Gods."
A smile grew on the sister's face. All the nervousness in their bodies seemed to have disappeared hearing that. In fact, Diana even laughed a bit, immediately grabbing the brother's attention.
"Yeah, me and Cassie can agree with that" Diana agreed, stifling her small laughter behind a wide smile. "You know? Being the daughters of the great Queen Hippolyta!" Diana exaggerated with a wide circular motion with her arms. The three couldn't help but laugh at her dramatic performance.
"Hehe! Yeah. Whenever we walk outside, people are so afraid to talk to us. Even worse when they judge us" Cassandra explained but mumbling the last part of her sentence. However, the brothers heard her clearly.
"Judge you?" Callum asked, leaning forward with his arms resting on his legs.
Cassandra nodded her head, with a frown appearing on her face. "Being the Queens daughters… Were expected to be the best at everything. Fighting, leadership, politics, manners… God it gets so… so…"
"Frustrating?" Peter finished with a weak smile forming on his face, the young blonde reply with a nod.
"Sometimes we wish we can just let loose… You know? Have friends or something." Diana confessed leaning back onto the wooden log, staring into the sky, her arms holding her up.
"Looks like we have something in common then" Peter said with a smile.
"You want to be friends?" Cassandra asked, her eyes glinting with hope and a smile brighter than the stars.
"We want to for sure. How about you two?" Callum asked, looking at the two girls. They smiled at each other and nodded their heads. "Well then!" Callum excitedly said shooting up from his seat. He walked over to one of the bags he'd brought over from Eden.
"I think we need to celebrate this moment" Callum said aloud, jumbling through his pack. Cassie and Diana eyed him curiously, and so did Peter. Callum took out a brown bottle, and Peter's eyes widened.
"Where did you get that?!" Peter exclaimed jumping from his seat as well, fast-walking towards his brother.
"Dad gave it to us before we left…" Callum explained, holding the bottle of what their mother calls piss-coloured water.
"Is that beer?" Cassandra asked.
"I think so?" Callum answered, quizzically staring at the bottle. "Dad always drinks this stuff with Hades. And to be quite honest, i'm curious to what it tastes like"
"Wait… You two never drank before?" Diana asked with laughter making an appearance as she finished.
"Uh…" The two brothers answered, a blush forming on Peter's face while Callum nervously rubbed the back of his neck.
With that reaction, the two Amazonian princesses busted out into laughter. The two boys sighed with their heads facing the ground, feeling embarrassed.
"Aren't you guys like? 18?" Cassandra asked, giggling in between her words.
"Yeah… So?!" Callum fired back, getting a little defensive as the two boys walked back to their log.
"Most people, would have had a sip when they're 13" The brunette princess chuckled, moving her long locks from her face behind her ear.
"Were usually pretty busy so we don't have time for drinks… Plus our mother…" Peter shuttered at the word mother, at least when the topic revolves around drinking and their mother. "She has a keen hatred on drinking…"
Just as Cassie was about to say some thing, Callum interrupted. "Please don't ask…" Callum said, his eyes wide with fear, and his voice shaking.
With that said, Peter brought out some cups. Two from his bag, and two from the supplies Antiope gave them. Peter passed the cups over to Callum, and as the wolf guardian tipped the bottle, a realization shot up.
"J-Just so you know. W-We aren't planning on getting you drunk!" Callum blurted out, his face turning crimson. Peter widened his eyes, and snapped his head to the two beautiful girls.
The two responded with giggles, the blonde replying back to their concerns. "Don't worry about it. It takes a lot to get Amazonians drunk"
Peter and Callum sighed in relief and the younger brother; Callum began pouring a quarter of the bottle into each cup. Peter handed the cup to the two girls, and took one for himself. He looked at his brother with a warm smile and then directed towards the princesses.
"To new friends" Peter exclaimed raising his cup over the campfire. The three repeated his words with glowing smiles, cheering the cups together, spilling a little bit of the drink from the contact.
Diana and Cassandra took some big gulps and they seemed to have liked the taste. They usually have Amazonian made alcohol, so this Edenian type of drink was refreshingly new. The two girls smiled at the new flavour and looked up to see Peter and Callum take their first sips of alcohol.
"Mmh?!"
"Urgh!"
The two brothers took a sip and made some unearthly noises with their mouths. Peter choked on his beer while Callum did a spit take. The two sisters couldn't help but bust out into a fit of laughter at their reactions.
"Ugh! How does dad drink this stuff?!" Peter wondered placing the cup down and instead taking out his water pouch hoping the water would wash away its taste.
"W-Why… Why is it so bitter and wheaty?" Callum scrunched his face in disgust, wiping any stray beer droplets from his mouth.
"Don't worry. The more you drink, the more you'll get used to it and like it" Diana said, giggling throughout her words.
"I think I'll just stay away from it, thank you very much" Peter stuck his tongue out disgust, placing the cup down on the ground.
"Well… Aside from that experience…" Callum started take a sip from his water pouch, "Whats it like in Themyscira? You guys are cut off from the world, right? Doesn't it get boring?"
"Sometimes…" Cassandra answered, downing the drink in one go, getting surprised looks from the two brothers. "We mostly train, study, read, or hunt with our spare time. Themyscira isn't that big of an island but there are places we don't even know about"
"Our mother doesn't really let us stray far from the city." Diana added, downing the drink just like Cassie.
"Really? Given that you are Hipp—Queen Hippolyta's daughters. You two must be highly trained no?" Callum asked.
"We are. Well at least we think we are. I think it just has to do with a mother's protectiveness. "Diana answered back with a heavy sigh.
"We can understand that" Peter remarked with a smirk on his face, thinking about their mother. "Our mother can get pretty over-protective of us sometimes. There have been many times when our mother would scare the shit out of Hades"
The two girls rose an eyebrow at this statement… The God of the Underworld scared of someone's mother?
"Yeah… When Hades told us to do some extra guarding rounds in Torment, our mother, Maria, stomped into his throne room with her famous wooden spoon" Callum continued with a smile on his face. His smile than switched to a frown almost immediately. "It. Was. Terrifying."
"What happened?" Cassie asked intrigued.
"Long story short. Hades was stiff walking for a week" Peter answered with a lifeless look on his face. "I'll never forget that day."
"At least she got rid of the spoon" Callum added, and the two brothers shrugged in disgust as he did. The girls had their eyes wide open. They shook their heads, ridding the upcoming image in their heads.
"Okay! Removing us from that thought. I do have a question for Callum!" Cassie exclaimed excitedly, wanting to drive the conversation somewhere else.
"Okay, fire away" Callum said, leaning back on the log.
"You're Goddess's Athena's Champion, right?" Cassie asked with the brightest smile you can imagine. Callum had a feeling this question was going to come up. After all, Amazonians worshiped Athena like crazy, just like how Atlanteans worships Poseidon.
Callum nodded his head with a smile. He remembered when he met Athena the first time, when he was chosen to be her champion. He was a nervous wreck. Athena, Goddess of Wisdom and War, who wouldn't be nervous? Plus, her beauty rivals that of Aphrodite and Hera.
"What's she like?!" Cassie asked, her hands clasped together. Diana also seemed very curious about the young boy's experience.
"I think the better question is. What's she like when she's with Callum, and when she's not" Peter joked, getting a playful hit from his brother.
"What do you mean?" Diana asked furrowing her brows.
Callum took a deep breath before starting. "Me and Athena have a… Unique relationship" Callum started. Diana and Cassie looked at each other surprised, more so because he addressed the Goddess by name so casually.
"Like Peter said… When I'm not with her, she tends to be very focused on her duties. Blessing those who worship her, constantly reading, and writing about humans. Studying their behaviour. She's very studious and strict. I guess you can say, she's very similar to you guys. She always has this aura of dominance and confidence." Callum explained with a smile on his face.
"Annnnnnd then… When Callum comes in!" Peter smirked, nudging his brother with his elbow, garnering a groan from him. "She stutters on her own words"
The two sisters directed their attention from Peter to Callum, their eyes boring into his skull. To the Amazonians, Athena was the personification of strength, courage, intelligence, and pride. It's hard to believe the goddess they worship would stutter, for a man no less.
"Okay, that's an exaggeration" Callum said pointing at his brother with an annoyed expression.
"Nope, nope. I remember it like it was yesterday." Peter smiled, turning to the sisters with an evil smile on his face. "We were accompanying Hades and Persephone to Olympus. There she was, Athena in all of her wise glory. She had a really stern and serious look when she was talking to Ares."
"Ah yeah!" Callum reminisced, "He was telling some really bad dad jokes."
"Then When Hades and Persephone introduced themselves. Athena turned her head directly to Callum and all of that seriousness in her face disappeared, and I swear she forgot how to breath." Peter explained using his arms to exaggerated the story. "In all seriousness though. I'd say Callum brings out Athena's more womanly qualities. She can relax around him basically."
"I wish I could meet Goddess Athena one day" Cassie dreamingly said, staring into the sky.
"I'm pretty sure you will. Aren't the Amazons also participating in the games in two days?" Peter asked, and suddenly a realization struck on the two girls faces. How long have they been out?
"Oh, my goddess!" Diana yelled out in realization, her hands running through her dark hair. "We were supposed to be home hours ago for training!"
"This isn't good!" Cassie was in the same predicament as Diana. Although they seemed awfully a lot more scared than the two brothers thought they'd be. The two knew the Amazon's were strict, but they were never resort to physical punishment. They just make you do more exercises until your body drops from exhaustion.
"Why are you guys so—" Callum began, but a loud horn was sounded off in the distance. The two brothers recognized this horn… Artemis used it when they were hunting them down.
Peter then closed his eyes and began searching for any arachnids in their area. There were some, but most of them crawled back into their nests, fearful of the Amazons. Peter might be able to see through their eyes but he can't control their emotions. Luckily, Peter was able to see through one spiders' eye.
"Oh boy… Looks like a search party." Peter groaned. There were fifteen Amazon's walking in an arrow formation, spears and shields at the front, with bow women, around 10 meters behind them. "Douse the fire"
Callum nodded and poured water of their campfire, as well as the spit roast. He also returned Ignis into his gladius form as he had flaming paws and breath. He took out a handle from his belt and pressed a button. Two handles extruded out from both ends, revealing a spear with jade inlay. He whispered, "Feng, rid the smell here"
The jade spear lit up lightly and a small breeze began picking up into the sky. The smell of cooked elk meat, ash, and fish was blown up. Now their area just smelled of the forest.
"It'll be bad if you two were caught here with us" Peter quietly said to the two girls. "You have to go—?!" Peter's eyes widened, his spider-senses going off. The young quickly sprung backwards with one arm as an arrow zipped by, sticking into the ground where he once stood.
"How dare you…" A woman's voice spoke, with venom laced in her words. She stepped into the moonlight revealing herself to be Donna. Another figure stepped in as well, revealing Artemis.
"Just one day. Just one day. Can't we just have a normal peaceful day?" Callum looked hopefully up into the sky before dropping his head, sighing heavily.
"That beer sounds really good right now" Peter added.
A/N: Alright everyone, that's chapter three done! Sorry for the two-year long absence. I decided I would make a commitment to continue these stories of mine. Unfortunately, Accidental Harem won't be on my top priority, as my other story Just A Normal Life is my main focus. I'll try update this one as much a I can!
Thank you guys so much!
