Paladins in Waiting
Pidge couldn't help but yawn as she pressed her hand against the scanner for her room to unlock it before she pushed the door open. She wanted to get at least a little sleep before the royal banquet, knowing that she would be expected to attend the entire time, already being informed that the future black paladin would finally attend as well as Emperor Zarkon having an announcement that seemed to have Allura in a fowl mood. The Altea princess had ignored all of them during the team building exercises, clearly being stuck in her own thoughts. The future green paladin had barely laid down on her bed when she heard a knock on the metal door. She couldn't help but groan before she pushed herself back up.
"Come in." she called, not caring about being loud as she adjusted herself to lean against the wall. Allura glanced at her when the door slide open, clearly seeing just how tired she was.
"Katie I was wanting to talk to you about something before dinner tonight. Father and Emperor Zarkon are planning on announcing for a marriage between me and one of the princes to strengthen the alliance between our two planets. I do not wish to marry either of the Galran princes and was hoping I would be able to convince you to maybe stand in my place." Allura stated. Pidge frowned, crossing her arms at the thought of being forced to act like a proper lady. She would much rather tinker with her many projects than wear a stuffy gown and stand beside her 'husband' to boost his image.
"Now hear me out. You would still train with Trigel and be the Green paladin in waiting but you are just as…acceptable as I am. Zarkon would surely accept the alliance if you married one of his sons." Allura continued, clearly ignoring the annoyed look on Pidge's face.
"Allura, I am not a princess of Altea. I am just from Earth, which is a planet that is still trying to adjust to the idea of aliens. Just because my father has been working along side yours to boost Earth's technology does not mean I am anywhere on the same level as you. If you suggest me than Zarkon is going to think that you think yourself above his sons." Pidge objected.
"But Katie think about the technology you would be allowed to tinker with. Right now, you have Altean technology. Think about all the possibilities if you managed to combine the two." Allura stated, crossing the room to sit on the bed beside Pidge. The young girl frowned, glancing at the Altean princess. She knew that Allura wanted nothing more than to take stand at her father's side as his heir and some day take the mantel as the Blue paladin. Even though the Galra was their ally she always had a difficult time trust them, convinced that they would attack the first opportunity that was available. A marriage alliance between Allura and a Galra prince would surely only end in chaos.
"I will think about it but Alfor isn't going to be happy about any of this. And I will choose my duty as a paladin over my friendship with you." Pidge sighed before she climbed out of her bed, walking towards her closet, pulling out the gown Melenor had given to her for the royal banquet. Allura frowned before she nodded, silently exiting the room. Pidge sighed before she looked down at the gown, running her fingers over the green and gold designs that decorated the bodice. She couldn't help but think about the Galra that was supposed to be the next black paladin, worried that he wouldn't be a good leader considering they still had yet to meet him. Zarkon had been training him privately on Dibazaal and the banquet would be the first time they actually got to meet him.
"This is ridiculous. I shouldn't be this excited to meet someone." She grumbled, tossing the dress on her bed before she grabbed her practice bayard. Alfor had managed to create weapons that acted just like the bayards they would one day use, stating that it wouldn't do much good to grow used to one weapon just for it to change when they took on the mantels as paladins. While the bayards acted the same as the traditional paladin bayards they delivered a sharp electric pulse instead of actually being lethal. She walked through the castle, mentally going over the training drills in her head. She couldn't help but sigh as she placed her hand against the panel to get into the training hall. She stopped when she noticed the gladiator was already activated, seeing young male dressed in just black pants swing his sword. It connected with the gladiator's weapon sending it sliding across the floor. He took a deep breath, reaching up to run his hand through his hair, pushing it out of his face.
"That was pretty impressive. I'm Pidge." She stated, walking over to him. The young man glanced down at her outstretched hand with a frown. He turned away, walking over to the wall to grab his pouch of water. She frowned, raising an eyebrow before she activated her practice bayard.
"How about an actual sparing partner instead of a bot?" she questioned, giving him a small grin. The young man smirked before her grabbed his sword, walking back towards her.
"Think you'd be able to handle getting beat?" he questioned with a cocky grin. Pidge only smirked before she took her stance, waiting for him to attack. He smirked before he charged at her, easily swinging his sword. She quickly shot her bayard, tugging on it when it wrapped around the column on the opposite side of the training room. She stood up, allowing it to switch to a double ended glaive that she had recently unlocked. He raised an eyebrow raising his sword as she started to take a step towards him.
The sparing match went on for nearly an hour, nether willing to admit defeat. Pidge groaned when they both settled against opposite walls, leaning her head back as she gasped, catching her breath.
"You're not bad. But I guess considering you're training to be the next paladin of the Green Lion that is to be expected." He stated, watching her from where he sat. He reached, grabbing his water pouch watching her. She glanced at him when he suddenly walked over, stopping in front of her. She blinked when he held out a spare water, slowly reaching up to take it.
"Drink up and then you might think about going to change for that banquet that was supposed to start ten minutes ago." He teased softly before he walked out of the training hall. Pidge's eyes grew wide before she scrambled to her feet, running back to her room. She had barely pulled off her training gear, grabbing the gown from the bed where she had thrown it when there was a harsh knock on her bedchamber door.
"Just a moment!" she called, internally panicking as she scrambled to pull the complicated dress over her head. A soft laugh grabbed her attention, angling herself just enough to see who was standing in her doorway. Her mother stood there with an amused look on her face as she watched her only daughter struggle to get the formal gown on properly.
"You look like you could use a little help." Colleen commented before she stepped into the room. Pidge groaned slightly as her mother helped her pull the dress on before she moved over to her nightstand to grab her hairbrush. Her eyes briefly glanced at the holographic clock that was near the door, faltering for a moment when she realized she still had nearly twenty minutes before she was expected in the banquet hall.
"So, who managed to ruffle your feathers little one?" her mother teased, crossing her arms as she watched the frown appear on her daughter's face.
"Just one of the Galaxy Garrison recruits. He had me so convinced that I was late to the banquet that I nearly killed myself on a dress." Pidge complained as she ran the brush through her hair. She frowned when her mother suddenly grabbed it, beginning to carefully run the item through her hair in an attempt to tame it far more than she had already managed. Pidge couldn't help but sigh, smiling slightly as she thought about how often her mother had done this very thing when she had still lived on Earth. Since it had been revealed that she would be the next Green Paladin and her father was working to help advance Earth technology there had barely been enough time in the days to spend with her family. She missed her brother more than she ever thought she would when he'd gone on the Kerberos Mission.
"Alright, that's as good as it's going to get. Come on." Colleen teased, squeezing Pidge's shoulders before she gave her a warm smile. Pidge took a deep breath before she followed her mother through the castle, smiling when she saw Trigel waiting just outside the doors for her. The current Green Paladin had taken a shining to her apprentice far quicker than anyone had ever expected considering she hardly ever took any uncalculated risks. Trigel offered her a warm smile in return once Pidge had stopped in front of her. She raised a small circlet that bore the Green Lions symbol, placing it on her head.
"Are you excited to meet the future Black Paladin?" she questioned as she glanced her trainee over with a small smile.
"As excited as one can be about meeting someone that is supposed to be their leader, but they know nothing about." Pidge stated, shrugging slightly. She couldn't help but think about the young Galaxy Garrison recruit she had been training with before the ceremony. He hadn't held back when wielding his sword, though it was an odd choice of weapon for someone that had unlimited access to the more advance weaponry that was being created.
"I am proud to present Trigel and Katherine Holt, the paladins of the Green Lion." Alfor announced as two Alteans pulled the double doors open. Pidge barely managed not to role her eyes as the Altean King announced her given name instead of the name she was known by. She stepped through the elegant doors behind Trigel, glancing around at the attendants for the introduction ceremonies. Her eyes landed on Lance and Hunk, the two boys that had originally been her pod mates at the Galaxy Garrison before they had discovered the truth about just what was beyond Kerberos. She could clearly see that Hunk was already eyeing the food that was laid out on the table while Lance was attempting to flirt with one of the Galra women that were in attendance. She glanced around and noticed Princess Allura was already seated beside her father, her arms crossed with a sour look on her face. Pidge couldn't help but flinch slightly as she thought about what Allura had asked of her that she still hadn't managed to give her an answer.
"Lastly I would like to welcome Emperor Zarkon and his son, Prince Keith, the paladins of the Black Lion." Alfor stated, a warm smile overtaking his face as he clapped when his old friend stepped in the ballroom. Pidge faltered for a moment when she recognized the young man that stepped into the ballroom behind the Galra emperor. Keith was dressed in traditional Galra royal attire, his black hair slicked back and held in place with a circlet similar to her own that bore the mark of the Black Lion. His violet eyes glanced around the room, briefly landing on her for a moment before he offered her a smirk. She glared at him for a moment before Trigel nudged her softly to gain her attention. Alfor gestured for everyone to take their seats, the musicians starting to play soft, classical music. Pidge silently sat down between Trigel and Blaytz. Allura sat between her mother and her mentor, momentarily glaring at the two Galra Princes that sat beside Emperor Zarkon. Pidge was silent as she sat in her seat, listening to the soft music as she moved a slice of meat around her plate. She couldn't help but get lost in her thoughts as the evening progressed. She glanced up when she heard the sound of metal tapping against glass, watching as King Alfor stood from his seat.
"I would like to make an announcement before the dancing begins. Emperor Zarkon, Samuel Holt and I have all reached an agreement that we hope will benefit all of us." Alfor stated. Pidge's eyes grew wide as she searched for her parents among the guests, hoping that Allura hadn't taken her idea to them. However, when she saw the proud look on his face and the small grin on the Altean princess' she knew she had.
"The alliance we hold with the planet Earth is still new and rocky, but we hope by bringing the lions, one of our very own paladins and one of the Galra princes, we will strengthen the alliances between the three. So, I am proud to announce the betrothal of Paladin Katherine Holt and Prince Keith of Dibazaal." Alfor announced. Pidge slowly stood up from her chair, her mind not registering the sound of the claps and cheers that rang through the grand ballroom. She glared at Allura for a moment before she turned her attention to the man that she was now betrothed to, balling her hands into fists at the thought of marriage without giving her any options of her own. Trigel frowned when she noticed the furious looked that crossed her successor's face for a moment. Clearly she hadn't known anything about the decisions that had been made for her.
"It would be an honor if Lady Katherine would give me the honor of the first dance?" Keith questioned, holding out his hand to her. Pidge bit her lip, forcing down the hateful remark she wanted to make in favor of taking his outstretched hand. She balled her free hand into her skirt's in frustration before she raised it to place it comfortably on his shoulder, feeling his hand rest correctly on her waist.
"So, you're the prince." She commented once the music had started. Keith raised an eyebrow at her statement, amusement clear in his violet eyes.
"I would have thought that obvious from the wonderful announcement King Alfor just made." He stated, raising an eyebrow as he led her through the dance. Pidge frowned slightly, tightening the grip she had on his shoulder.
"Perhaps that is something you might have informed me of during our lovely little sparing session this afternoon." She stated, gritting her teeth in frustration. He glanced down at her, finally noticing the furious spark in her brown eyes. They both stood still, looking at each other when the music stopped.
"I don't normally introduce myself until someone else does. I have been hidden away in the Dibazaal castle my entire life because I was different and destined for things I had no control over. My mother didn't want me so pardon me for being cautious about someone I just met." He stated, stepping back from her.
"But you clearly knew about this betrothal before I did!" She accused, ignoring the other guests that had gathered around them in an attempt to enjoy their night.
"And why do I find that hard to believe? The pampered green princess doesn't like having someone else make decisions for her?" Keith sneered, anger crossing his face before a moment before he stowed it behind an icy match. He gritted his teeth at the defiant look he received, waiting to see that fire that she'd shown during their sparing session.
"Is everything alright?" Trigel questioned, stepping up to the two in hopes that she could defuse the obvious tension.
"Everything is simply fine Trigel. If you could please inform my parents and King Alfor that I have decided to retire for the night. Also think you could inform them that next time they want to make an important decision in my life pertaining to a spoilt, pampered prince that perhaps they could inform me so I could tell them just how much of an idiot they are being that would be appreciated." Pidge stated. She jerked the circlet from her hair, tossing it on the table as she walked by. Keith stood in the center of the ballroom, glancing over at his father for a clue as to what he was expected to do. Honerva frowned slightly, watching as the future green paladin stormed out, clearly showing the temper she was known for.
Pidge slammed her bedroom door shut, jerking her fingers through her hair in frustration in an attempt to remove the braids her mother had done. The young girl grabbed her pillow, releasing a scream that had been bubbling up the entire night. Her brown eyes burned with unshed tears that she refused to allow to fall. She stepped into her private bathroom, turning on the hot water to fill the simple tub.
Allura carefully knocked on Pidge's bedroom door, resting her gloved hand against the door handle. The Altean princess pushed it open when she received no response. She glanced around the room, noticing Pidge's ballgown lying on the ground close to the foot of her bed.
"Pidge? Are you in here?" she called, listening for an answer.
"Go away!" Pidge yelled from her bathroom, the tone to her voice indicating that she had been crying. Allura carefully pushed the connecting door open, seeing the green paladin in training sitting on the floor in her brother's old night shirt. She rested her head against her knees, her brown hair falling in her face as she struggled to control her temper at the sight of the princess.
"Pidge? Talk to me. What's wrong? Prince Keith said you stormed out without much of an explanation." Allura questioned, walking over to kneel in front of the girl she considered a sister. She felt horrible for going behind her back but had thought she was doing the right thing.
"He's a horrible prat! I can handle him being the black paladin, but the thought of marrying him? He's horrible!" Pidge cried, her temper finally getting the better of her. She dug her fingers into her hair, pulling at the soft locks. Allura sighed slightly before she sat properly beside the other girl, attempting to figure out what she could say to calm her down. Before she knew it Pidge had rested her head against her shoulder and fallen asleep, drained from the day. She sighed before she carefully stood up, thankful that she could lift the younger girl as she got her situated in her bed.
The next morning Pidge was woke up later than she normally would, having slept through her alarms, still feeling slightly drained from the day before. She donned her paladin armor before she walked through the hallways towards the hanger where she figured Trigel would already be waiting. She faltered when she spotted the five original paladins and the four other paladins in training clearly standing around waiting for her. Lance was standing beside Alfor with his arms crossed, a sour look on his face. Keith was standing beside his father with a matching stance and expression.
"Now that we have all five of our lovely paladins in training why don't we begin today with some trust exercises?" Alfor questioned.
"The four of us already trust each other with our lives. Why does this dude have to come in and screw all of that up?" Lance complained, glaring at the future black paladin.
"Paladin Lance that is enough! You are expected to be Keith's right hand, literally, yet you can't get over your own complaints." Zarkon stated, clearly growing tired of the treatment his son was receiving from the other paladin. Pidge crossed her arms as she glared at her 'betrothed'. Keith spared her a moment of attention before he turned and stepped towards the black lion. Zarkon smirked as the Black Lion lowered its head to allow him entrance.
"The Lions will be helping the five of you form a type of bond with them as well as each other." Trigel explained, nudging Pidge towards the waiting Green Lion. Pidge offered her a small smile before she stepped into the smallest of the lions, sitting comfortably in the pilot's chair. The green screens flickered to life around her, the controls adjusting to her reach.
"I want each of you to picture your lions. Each of you hold a grasp over the element they present, a bond that you have forged. A bond that cannot be broken, only strengthened." Alfor stated, his voice echoing through the comsystems in the lions. Pidge was silent as she glanced around her lion, briefly waiting for the clear signal that the other paladins were focusing.
"It is good to see you my little lion cub." A soft purr echoed in her head once she'd closed her eyes. The green lion seemingly materialized in front of her, standing at her side as the other lions flickered into view. She glanced around, frowning slightly when she realized that the only other paladin that had managed to connect with their lion the same way she had been was Keith. She watched as he stood next to the black lion, his hand resting against the lion's mane. She frowned, noticing that something seemed to be bothering him.
"The black lion cub is…troubled." The green lion purred.
"I will wait to address it when the other paladins have joined us." Keith suddenly stated, crossing his arms over his chest. Pidge glanced around, waiting for the other paladins to join their lions. Allura was the next connect with her lion. She offered Pidge a small, nervous smile from where she stood to her right. The three paladins didn't have to wait for much longer before Hunk joined them, his own lion lying at his feet, clearly watching the others.
"Where's Lance? Usually he's the very first one to connect with his lion?" Hunk questioned, glancing around.
"Red is furious with her young paladin to be. She is refusing to connect with him until he understands that the young Galra prince is the leader of the newest generation." Green roared, her normally quiet voice echoing throughout the void. Pidge didn't fail to notice just how stiff Keith seemed to be as he stood next to the Black lion. Just as he moved to uncross his arms Lance flickered into view, his control more unstable than normal. Red sat on her hunches beside him, her tail flicking in annoyance.
"Our…mentors think that in this zone we will have the chance to talk. I know none of you know me, therefore you have no reason to trust me. However, I have been training since it was discovered I bore the mark of the black lion." Keith explained, his gaze momentarily flickering to Pidge before he turned his attention to the other paladins. He took a deep breath, resting his hand against the Black Lion's mane. Pidge glanced down at the Green lion for a moment before she closed her eyes, taking a deep breath. Normally she wasn't one of the ones to say a word during their training exercises, but she figured Keith needed the strength Lance clearly wasn't willing to give.
"We don't mean to hold it against you, but we don't know anything about you other than you're a Galra prince. The three of us have known each other for years and we've been training with Allura since we got to Altea." Pidge explained, feeling Green release a purring sound in the back of her mind.
"It should not matter paladins. You are the destined, chosen generation. Each of you stand at the lion that best suits. Prince Keith is a leader, whether it be of this group of paladins or at his brother's side over the Galra nation." The Black Lion roared. His voice echoed through the quiet, empty void. Keith tightened the grip he had on his mane, taking several deep, shaking breathes. Pidge could tell that there was something he was trying to get out, to explain, but couldn't seem to find the right words.
"I…it is obvious from how much I look like all of you that I am not full Galra. My mother was a part of a Galra rebellion that does not believe in the Paladins or the Alliance we have with other planets and galaxies. When her leader discovered the mark of the Black Lion on my neck when I was just a child he wanted me dead. My mother was fully prepared to do just that when Zarkon found their base. He has raised me to be the best leader I can be since then. I don't ask that any of you fully trust me. I just ask that you understand my decisions when I ask you to do something won't be to cause any harm. I will always put myself in the necessary danger before I send any of you in." he finally explained. Pidge couldn't help but smile for a brief moment before she turned her attention to her fellow paladins. She could tell that both Lance and Allura were still reserved and unsure about their destined leader, but Hunk looked more accepting of it than he had.
"Your mentors are waiting for you to continue your endurance training." Blue stated, her voice carrying as she stood from where she'd been laying at Allura's feet. When Pidge opened her eyes again she was back inside the Green lion, her mind reeling as she thought about the words she had said to Keith when she'd learned of their betrothal. When they had been two strangers just training together it had been easier to get along. She took a deep breath before she stood from the pilot's chair, walking towards the exit still lost in her thoughts.
For nearly a month Keith worked hard to prove to the others that he would make a good leader; however, he often felt more torn down than built up after their training sessions. Lance still had a habit of hurling insults at him any time he messed up. He knew it was making both his father and King Alfor furious, but it was something he needed to figure out on his own. A gentle knock on his bedroom door jerked him from his thoughts. He stood up from his bed just as the door slid open, revealing his mother standing in the hallway. The youngest prince bowed his head in respect, a small smile gracing his face for a brief moment. Empress Honerva was often busy with her own research and didn't have as much time to spend with either of her sons as much as she would have liked. Zarkon made sure he knew that he was loved by the woman that had taken him in.
"I heard training didn't go all that well today." She commented, stepping into the room. He released a small laugh, reaching up to brush his hair out of his face. Honerva frowned as she walked closer, brushing her fingers against a cut just above his eyebrow. He winced slightly as the sharp pain before he turned away from her.
"It's nothing I can't figure out a way to handle. The future red paladin is still arguing with me every time I turn around. Today we were training with our actual bayards and he got a little too close." Keith explained. Honerva could see how her youngest's shoulders hung, knowing that this whole problem was getting to him more than he was willing to let on. Keith always strived to be the very best at everything he did to make his father proud.
"And how is your engagement going?" she questioned, choosing to approach a different subject. She frowned when she only received a shrug in response.
"Have you given her the courtship present you made? I'm sure she would love it." Honerva suggested. She noticed the small black box still sitting on the top of his desk, answering her question. Keith sighed before he walked over, picking the small gift up. Inside was a bracelet that activated a shield when the charm was pressed. He doubted Katherine would even be willing to wear anything he gave her. She hadn't avoided him nearly as much as the other three paladins, but she wasn't warm towards him either. Honerva opened her mouth to ask another question when she noticed the young Green paladin in training standing in the doorway. She had her red hair pushed back out of her face with a simple black headband that she had personally seen many of the Earth women wearing.
"Can I have a moment to talk to him? I saw his door was open and figured I would finally have a chance." Pidge questioned softly. Honerva glanced at her son's back for a moment before she simply nodded. She slipped out of the room without a sound, intending to check on her son after dinner.
"I'm sorry if I made you seem unwelcomed. The night of the ball I was just so angry because, yet another important decision had been made for me and it made me angry. I didn't know how to take it, but I shouldn't have taken it out on you the way I did." Pidge commented softly, hoping to gain his full attention. She noticed instantly the way his back tightened when he stood up straight upon hearing her voice. He didn't turn to face her, balling his hands into fists at his sides as he took a deep breath. Pidge slowly stepped further into the room, glancing around, taking in just how bare it truly was. All of the other paladins had many things in their rooms that personalized them, made them feel like home since they'd started to live on the Castle of Lions. The young paladin couldn't help but bite her lip as she thought about her lion's words. The black paladin seemed homesick and obviously felt unwanted by the very people that were expected to be his team.
"I borrowed some of King Alfor's books on…betrothals and engagements. I didn't know that we were supposed to exchange gifts. But I hope to fix that with this." She stated. Keith slowly glanced over his shoulder, looking at the small silver sphere that she held out in her hands. A confused frown graced his face as he slowly stepped closer to her, taking it in her hands.
"What is it?" he muttered, turning it over in his hands. She reached up with a quiet laugh, sitting it up straight in his hands before she pressed a button that was near his thumb. Keith's eyes grew wide when a projection appeared on his ceiling, showing Dibazaal. A grin appeared on his face as he saw his home planet for the first time in months. Pidge smiled as she saw the twinkle return to his violet eyes that hadn't been there since the Paladins ball.
"This is amazing Katherine." He whispered.
"Pidge." She corrected, earning a confused look. She couldn't help but laugh before she shook her head, remembering that King Alfor had introduced her as Katherine. She hadn't taken the time to actually introduce herself since than since she'd been acting like a child.
"You can call me Pidge. It's what the other's do. Or Katie if…if you prefer something different. But only my mom calls me Katherine when I'm in trouble." She explained with a smile. Keith nodded before he returned to look at the projection. He listened closely, realizing it played a soft tune that he remembered in the back of his mind. Pidge watched as he carefully sat it down on his desk, grabbing the small black box.
"I know this isn't something that you would probably wear but…I figure it would still come in handy." He muttered, holding it out for her to take. Pidge couldn't help but raise an eyebrow as she reached out to take it from him. Her fingers closed around the lid, carefully prying it open. Inside was a black leather bracelet with a silver charm that was the green lion's symbol. She couldn't help but smile before she pulled it completely out of the box.
"Would you help me put it on?" she questioned, holding the bracelet out towards him. Keith couldn't help but smile before he moved, wrapping the fine leather around her wrist before he fastened it securely in place. Pidge lifted her wrist up to get a better look at the charm. She'd barely pressed her thumb against it when a green holoshield flickered to life.
"This is amazing. How did you manage to do this?" She gasped, staring at it in wonder. Keith couldn't help but shake his head, releasing a small laugh.
"I can explain the process if you would walk with me in the Altean gardens?" He requested.
"I would be honored." She stated with a blush. Keith slipped his shoes on before he grabbed his jacket that had been a gift from one of the Earth pilots that had visited Dibazaal. They walked through the castle hallways towards the entrance. Pidge couldn't help but get lost in her thoughts, realizing that perhaps being engaged to the youngest Galra prince wasn't completely bad.
Even though the relationships he had with the other three paladins didn't seem to improve much but Keith was happy with how his relationship with Katie had vastly improved. Both his parents were overjoyed that both had finally seemed to accept their betrothal. Pidge often spent her time split between spending time with Keith, tinkering with her own inventions and training to take the mantel for the Green Lion.
"Katie are you ready for our first solo patrol?" Keith questioned over the headset as he took the seat of the Black Lion. He couldn't help but grin when he received a groan in response, knowing that his girlfriend wasn't a morning person. He reached forward, taking the controls in his hands, the Black lion powering up as it accepted its new paladin. Pidge yawned as she sat in her seat, rubbing her eyes for a moment before she pulled her hair back into a ponytail out of her face. She readjusted the helmet before she reached for the controls. Green stood up straight, her screens flickering for a moment before she gain a clear view of the outside. Hunk and Allura's own lions were standing tall, however, the blue lion still sat on its hunches.
"Lance are you there?" Keith questioned, a frowning growing on his face. Pidge rolled her eyes when he didn't receive a response. Keith gritted his teeth, taking a deep breath before he attempted to contact the Blue Paladin again. She glanced over at where the Paladins of Old were standing, supervising their trainees first solo patrols. Alfor had a furious look on his face as he spoke with Zarkon. She watched as he turned and walked out of the hangers. He returned nearly 30 minutes later pulling Lance through the doors.
"Late as always." Keith mumbled, rolling his eyes in frustration.
"Cut him some slack." Allura snapped, tightening the grip she had on the Blue Lion's controls. Pidge frowned, biting her lip to keep her own retort silenced.
"Allura we informed all of you what time you needed to be in your lions and ready for patrol. Keith is the Black Paladin therefore he had every right to question why one of his fellow paladins in late." Alfor stated, silencing his daughter easily. Zarkon watched in silence with his arms crossed as he watched the Black Lion leave the hanger, pride swelling in his chest at his son finally taking the mantle.
"I know my friend." Alfor stated with a small smile, resting his hand against his best friend's arm. Trigel smiled as she watched the Green Lion fly at the Black Lion's left side. Keith took a deep breath before he pushed the larger lion faster, glancing at the map on the right of his screens that had a patrol route drawn out for them to follow. After they had flown for a while Pidge couldn't help but frown when she noticed just how silent it was. Normally Lance and Allura were already complaining or arguing about something. She glanced at the communication screens, noticing that both of their comms were muted. She couldn't help but bite her lip before she reached over, pushing several buttons to manually unmute them from her lion.
"-thinks because he's a stupid prince that he's such a hot shot." Lance's complaint suddenly cutting through the silence. Keith stiffened when he heard the complaint that had become common to hear from the Red Paladin. He took several deep breathes, tightening the grip he had on the Black Lion's controls. Pidge flinched as she realized what argument she had interrupted this time. Allura had gone silent, clearly realizing that they were no longer silent to the rest of their team. Keith's face suddenly appeared on Pidge's screen, allowing her to see the both the anger and the tears. Before she could say anything to attempt to cheer him up their lions flashed red, receiving a distress signal from a nearby planet.
"Let's see what the problem is." Keith ordered.
They landed their lions, Pidge typing the coordinates into the computer attached to her wrist to allow the Paladins of Old to track them. She walked at Keith's side, allowing her bayard to activate. Keith held his bayard, glancing around the clearing they had landed in. It was completely silent aside from their own footsteps.
"This is where the distress signal originated from. I don't understand why there isn't anything here." Pidge stated, looking back at her computer. Keith frowned as he turned in a full circle, searching for any signs that this was a trap. Pidge glanced over her shoulder as Allura and Lance continued to talk in hushed tones. Hunk shared an annoyed look with her before he turned and walked towards the tree lines behind the lions.
"Guys…you might wanna come look at this." He suddenly called. Keith and Pidge both shared at look before they quickly ran towards the Yellow Paladin. Keith's steps faltered when he caught sight of a ship in the trees, clearly having be ransacked. A blue symbol glowed, cut into the side of the ship, a symbol that he remembered from his childhood.
"We need to get back to Altean and report this to-" Keith began, quickly being cut off by Lance.
"We need to look for any survivors or see if whoever did this is still around. Or are you too scared of a fight oh great leader?!" Lance snapped. Keith gritted his teeth, glaring at the Red Paladin. He balled his hands into fists for a moment.
"You don't know anything about what did this! Listen to me for once and get back to your lions!" Keith ordered. He stepped forward, standing toe to toe with Lance. Pidge could tell whatever that symbol meant it was bothering Keith more than he wanted to admit. She frowned when the Red paladin simply turned and walked towards the crashed ship, ignoring their leader's orders. Allura glanced between the two, already knowing they were going to get into a huge amount of trouble with her father when they got back to Altea.
"Lance maybe this isn't the best time to question Keith. If he says we need to report this than I would guess that this is something we can't handle on our own." Allura stated.
"No, I'm so sick of this pampered prince who came in here towards the end of our training with some sob story about his mother and expected us to just follow him." Lance snapped. A bone chilling laugh echoed throughout the clearing causing all of them to stiffen. Pidge quickly used her grappling hook to jerk Lance back towards them. An arrow was embedded in the ground right where he'd been standing seconds later. Keith stepped forward, standing in front of the four of them with his katana raised. He was thankful the lions were at their backs, so he only had to watch their fronts. Lance grumbled as he slowly got back to his feet, glaring at the Green Paladin.
"What the hell Pidge?" He complained.
"Can't control your team Keith? What would Emperor Zarkon think if he saw his successor was a weak little child?" A woman's voice questioned. Keith stiffened when he recognized his mother's voice, glancing around the trees for any signs of the Blade of Marmora.
"Get back to your lions! Now!" he ordered, glancing over his shoulder at Pidge. She quickly nodded before she jerked Lance with her. The Red paladin finally seemed to understand the severity of the situation and ran to his lion without any further complaints. Her heart jumped in her throat when she heard Keith cry out in obvious pain. She prayed that Keith was right behind her, but she knew he wouldn't get to his lion until they were all safely in theirs. Once she was in her chair she pulled her lion into the air, hoping the use her ion cannon to create enough of a distraction to allow him time to get to his own lion. She shot towards the trees, creating a cloud of dust and smoke that caused a big enough distraction. However, it also made her unable to see if Keith got away from the three masked figures he'd been fighting with.
"Come on Keith. Where are you?" she whispered, watching for any signs that he'd made it into the Black lion. She released a deep breath when the lion's eyes glowed their normal yellow.
"Let's get back to Altea and inform Zarkon of what happened." Keith ordered over their headsets. Pidge couldn't help but worry when she heard the obvious pain in his voice. The flight back to Altea was thankfully silent aside from Keith's labored breaths that she could barely hear through their headsets. She couldn't help but worry about what damage he'd received. Their lions had barely landed in the hanger before she threw her helmet off and raced down the ramp. Trigel was standing at the exit but she didn't acknowledge her as she ran towards the Black Lion's hanger. The only thoughts running through her head were worries that he had stayed silent about something that could have been life threatening. She slide around the corner, thankful that the hanger doors were already open. Zarkon glanced at her in confusion when she ran towards him.
"Paladin Katherine is something wrong?" he questioned. She opened her mouth to explain when the Black Lion lowered his head to allow Keith to exit. He held his side as he walked, and she could clearly see blood dripping from another cut on his arm. Zarkon easily brushed passed her, moving forward to catch his son when he stumbled over the ramp. Keith flinched as his body was jostled, gritting his teeth and squeezing his eyes shut tight.
"Oh Keith." Pidge whispered, covering her mouth for a moment. Several footsteps could be heard entering the hanger, each stopping at the entrance. Alfor quickly called for Coran to prepare one of the Healing pods before he took the smaller paladin. He knew Zarkon would question them while he got the young prince help, knowing it wouldn't do any good for the Galra emperor to wait in the Med-bay
"I want to know what happened and I want to know what happened now!" he demanded, looking at each of the young paladins. His gaze rested on Pidge last, figuring she would be the one he could get the most answers out of. The smaller green paladin took a deep breath before she began telling him about the distress signal that they had answered. Fury burned in his eyes as he glared at Lance when he learned that the Red paladin had refused to listen to his leader because of his own selfish reasons.
"Perhaps we were wrong to think you paladins were ready for a solo assignment. Clearly there is more training that is needed." Trigel stated, sharing a look with Blaytz and Gyrgan. Both older paladins nodded before they led their trainees back into the castle. Trigel glanced at Pidge, seeing her head was hung.
"I'll stay with her." Zarkon stated. He waited until his fellow Paladin had left before he turned to the girl that had ultimately used her quick thinking to save his son's life. Tears ran down her cheeks as she stared at the bracelet that was still clasped around her wrist. When he'd first joined the team, he had told them that he would always put them before himself. She'd opened that she'd be able to stand at his side should that time ever come but instead she had ran back to her lion.
"I know what you are thinking, and I want you to stop. Keith has been trained and trained to be a leader. If you had stayed at his side he would have worried more for your protection and safety than his own. Had you stayed he might not have made it back alive. Instead, you followed your leader's orders and got back to your lion and then created a distraction which allowed him to make it back to his lion." Zarkon stated. She managed a small nod, looking up at the current Black Paladin. He had heard that she wasn't the type that cried over many things, so to see her crying gave him a small piece of mind that she did care for his son.
"Keith is going to be fine. He is a fighter and has gone through so much worse than this." Zarkon continued, hoping to sooth the small girl. He glanced up when the hanger doors opened, revealing his wife. He rested his hand on Pidge's shoulder before he walked towards her, both speaking in hushed tones. Pidge looked up at the Black lion before she turned and slowly walked through the halls towards her bedroom.
Keith groaned as he opened his eyes, feeling cool air it his face. He stumbled as he stepped out of the Healing pod, reaching out for anything to catch himself. A groan escaped him as he closed his eyes tight, the light blinding him for a moment. A soft laugh gained his attention as he felt a smaller hand in his own.
"Do you need help sitting down?" Pidge questioned softly. He only nodded before he let her pull him over to a small cot that had been set up. He sat beside her, resting his head against her shoulder, refusing to let her hand go. Keith managed to crack his eyes open a small amount, watching as she continued to work on a program on her tablet.
"Thank you Katie." He mumbled as he continued to relax against her.
"I just did my duty as your teammate and your intended." She whispered softly, a small smile playing on her lips. She hummed softly, easily lulling him back to sleep. His violet eyes drifted closed as he leaned against her, feeling calm as they sat. Pidge glanced up when the main doors slide open, allowing Alfor and Zarkon to enter the Med-Bay. Zarkon relaxed when he saw his son out of the healing pod, having been concerned with just how long it had taken for him to properly heal.
"Paladin Katherine, Trigel was searching for you to go over more training with your bayard." Zarkon stated. She nodded, slowly easing off the cot once they'd gotten Keith to properly lie down with his head on the pillow. Alfor watched as the Green Paladin in training walked out of the room, glancing at his longtime friend. He knew that the Galra Emperor had originally been against a union between Keith and Pidge since neither of them had known each other for very long. Originally when he had suggested the alliance marriage they had both hoped that Allura and Lotor would be able to get over their differences. Zarkon crossed his arms as he leaned against the wall, once again going over the small amount of information they had been able to get out of the other paladins about just what happened on that planet.
"You're thinking too hard." Keith's voice grumbled. Zarkon quickly turned his attention back to his son. The young prince groaned as he rolled over onto his side, flinching at the slight phantom pain that still remained. He couldn't help but chuckle slightly as he watched his son continue to be as stubborn as the day they had taken him in. Alfor placed his hand on his friend's shoulder before he left the father and son to speak alone. Keith took a deep breath as he once he'd managed to push himself into a sitting position.
"Paladin Katherine explained what happened on that planet. But she couldn't tell us what had you so spooked or who the people that attacked you were. Can you remember anything?" Zarkon questioned. Keith hung his head, reaching up to drag his fingers through his hair in frustration. He remembered exactly who had attacked them, but he had thought that they had managed to take out their group years ago.
"Keith?" Zarkon questioned, frowning slightly.
"The Blade of Marmora. But that doesn't make any sense. I thought you and the other paladins destroyed their base of operations years ago. We haven't seen anything from them and suddenly as soon as I take the mantle of the Black Lion they reappear?" Keith ranted, looking back at his father. Zarkon didn't bother trying to hide the sneer that appeared on his face as he thought about the group that had caused many planets under their protection harm.
"We destroyed a base. We had no way of knowing if it was actually their main base of operations or even knowing just how many of them were actually on that base. The only way we even knew where that base was…was because of you." Zarkon admitted. He sighed when he saw the confused look on his son's face, carefully sitting on the cot next to him.
"The base we destroyed that at the time we thought was their main base was the base I found you at when you were just a kit. I told you we took out their group to give you some comfort because you were always so terrified that they were going to come after you." He explained with another deep sigh. Keith frowned as he looked down at his hands, tracing the scars that still lingered there with his eyes.
"It doesn't matter. I know they're back and next time I will be more prepared for them…and I'll have a better connection with my team." Keith stated before he pushed himself to his feet. Zarkon watched as he walked out of the Med-Bay, already knowing he was going to escape to the training hall whether he was permitted to or not.
For nearly a year and half there wasn't another siting of the Blade from either group of paladins so Keith could only hope that they'd decided to go back into hiding. He raised his katana above his head, easily striking the training bot down before he took a step back.
"End training protocol." He ordered, walking over to the bench. He grabbed his black towel to wipe the sweat from his face.
"Not bad your highness." A voice teased behind him. He glanced over his shoulder with a grin when he spotted his brother. Lotor was leaning against the doorway, having been watching his practice from the balcony.
"I didn't think you were able to get away from Dibazaal for another several months. What changed?" Keith questioned as he walked towards the white-haired prince.
"Mother and father decided I needed an actual assignment instead of just sitting around the palace. So, I got sent on an 'ambassador assignment' to Altea to check on my little brother. And I'm just dying to meet the young woman that stole your heart. Last I'd seen her she was furious with you at the Paladin Ball nearly 19 months ago." Lotor teased. Keith laughed, shaking his head at his brother's antics. Though there was an age difference between the two of them aside from the fact that Keith was adopted Lotor still saw him as his blood brother. He had taken Keith under his wing as soon as Zarkon brought him back to the palace, barely giving their mother a chance to properly meet him.
"Come on. She's probably in the Green Lion's hanger. King Alfor gave her permission to run some of her programs on it to see if she can upgrade it. Not that Green is complaining." Keith explained. He couldn't help but laugh at the confused look on his brother's face.
"Father wasn't lying about having an actual connection with the lions? So, you can actually talk to them and they'll respond?" Lotor questioned as they walked through the hallways. Keith only shook his head as he pressed his hand against the scanner, glancing inside as the door opened. He couldn't help but smile when he saw Pidge stretched out over the Green Lion's paw.
"Has father said anything about you two actually having your wedding?" Lotor questioned as they walked closer.
"We'd planned on waiting until we have a better handle on Voltron before we worry about our own wedding." Pidge called without looking up from whatever she was currently working on. Lotor raised an eyebrow as he glanced at his brother again. Keith simply shrugged, knowing better than to try and argue with her about it. She stood up straight for a moment before she jumped down from Green's leg, easily landing on her feet. She dusted her hands off before she walked towards them. Keith leaned down to place a kiss on her forehead before he turned back towards his brother.
"Well, Lotor that is Katie. Katie this is my brother Lotor." Keith introduced, a warm smile on his face. Pidge stuck out her hand towards the older Galra prince. Lotor glanced down at it for a moment before he reached forward taking it, firmly shaking her hand.
"It is a pleasure to meet you Paladin Katie. I have heard many praises about you from both my father and my brother. Which, believe me, says quite a bit about your character." Lotor stated, enjoying the blush that appeared on his little brother's face. Pidge kissed Keith's cheek again before she turned and walked back over to her computer. Lotor moved to stand behind her as he looked over her shoulder in curiosity as to what she was working on. Her fingers faltered for a moment as she glanced over her shoulder at him, raising an eyebrow.
"Lotor is always curious about anything someone is working on when it comes to programming. I can't tell you how many times he's watched our mother work on a project." Keith chuckled, shaking his head at his brother's normal antics.
"Did you know our mother was one of Alfor's engineers that helped build Voltron from the comet?" Lotor suddenly questioned, turning to face the Green Lion. Pidge couldn't help but roll her eyes as she listened to the older prince continue on, opting to go over her cloaking program. Keith moved over and elbowed his brother in an attempt to silence him, a broad grin on his face. Not many people would ignore Lotor since he was supposed to be the future ruler of Dibazaal, destined to walk to step of the Kral Zera unopposed when the fire symbolizing their father's rein was extinguished. Keith leaned against the large metal leg of the Green Lion watching as Pidge continued to work, noticing when she started to fidget with the bracelet still wrapped around her wrist.
"Prince Lotor why don't you go and check in with King Alfor? Your brother and Paladin Katherine have a patrol that they need to get to." Trigel stated, stepping into the hanger. Pidge glanced at her mentor in confusion, knowing they still had several hours until they were supposed to go on patrol with the other lions. Lotor glanced at his brother for a moment before he nodded, slipping out of the hanger to go in search of the throne room where he knew King Alfor would already be waiting for him.
"Why don't you two come with me?" she stated, jerking her head in the direction of the hanger doors. Pidge couldn't help but frown for a moment before she placed her tools down on the table, taking her intended's hand. She couldn't help but get lost in thought as they followed Trigel, attempting to figure out what her mentor could possibly need with the both of them. Pidge frowned as they were led out of the hangers altogether, glancing up at Keith.
"Do you have any ideas what is going on?" she questioned. She only received a shrug in response, which did nothing to quench her curiosity. Trigel stopped in front of double doors, pressing her hand against the scanner. Pidge gasped when the doors opened, and she spotted her parents. She quickly released Keith's hand before she ran straight at them, quickly enveloping them in a hug. It had been nearly six months since she'd seen her parents since she'd taken the mantle of the Green Lion full time. None of them had gotten to take much time off to visit their families.
"What are you guys doing here?" she questioned, pulling back to look at her mom.
"Well, we all got tired of you two putting your happiness on the back burner, so we decided to plan everything for you. Don't bother trying to argue with me. And since Emperor Zarkon is busy on another matter your father is going to help get Keith ready. So, you come with me young lady." Colleen Holt stated, easily pulling her daughter towards a door on the right. Pidge blinked multiple times as she was pulled out of the room, attempting to understand just what her mother had said. Keith glanced at Samuel Holt for several awkward moments before he glanced at the clothes that were laid out on the bed. It was his traditional Galra uniform that he hadn't wore since he'd received his Paladin armor. The chest plate was a maroon color instead of the red most of his father's generals wore. The rest of the armor was a navy-blue color with a maroon-colored cloak attached by a gold chain around the shoulder pieces.
"I hope you know how to put this on because I am completely clueless." Sam chuckled, glancing at his future son-in-law. Keith managed a small, nervous smile before he stepped towards the bed. Once Mr. Holt had stepped out of the room Keith pulled his paladin armor off, sitting it on the bed before he dressed in his traditional Galra armor. He glanced over his shoulder when he heard the door leading into what he guessed was the bathroom opened again. Colleen slipped out and walked over to the small vanity, grabbing the hairbrush waiting there without another word. He raised an eyebrow in confusion before he simply shrugged, standing in front of the mirror to properly attach his cape. A small smile graced his face as he thought about how proud his father said he was the last time they'd gotten a moment to talk. He took a deep breath before he slipped out of the room, figuring Mrs. Holt wouldn't let Katie out of the bathroom while he was still in the room. He walked through the hallways, following the familiar directions towards the throne room where he figured their union was going to be held. As he pushed the door open to slip inside the first thing he noticed was both of his parents standing talking with King Alfor. A grin spread across his face before he ignored protocol running towards them. Honerva smiled as he hugged her tight, quickly returning the gesture.
"It's good to see you sweetheart." She whispered in his ear. Lotor grinned at his brother before he moved to take his seat on the front row of chairs that had been set up. He turned to face the other guests that were already seated in attendance. Lance gave him a thumbs up from where he was sitting between Hunk and Allura. Keith knew their relationship was one of both love and hate but it was better than where they had been a year earlier. His attention was quickly turned towards the door when his father carefully nudged him. Pidge stepped inside dressed in a simple white gown that had white tule over the skirt with golden lace along the hem. Her mother had braided her hair to the side, so it fell over her shoulder. The circlet that she'd worn the night they'd met at the Paladin ball proudly sat on her head now, showing her as the Green Paladin. His breath caught in his throat as he watched her step down the isle until she reached the steps. He held out his hand for her, smiling once she was standing at his side.
The ceremony passed by in a blur, Keith barely remembered what his own vows were. He just knew that he had fallen in love with the Green paladin and he wouldn't change that for anything. As they walked through the hallways he couldn't help but glance back down at the ring that now sat comfortably on his finger.
"We need to get changed out of this and get back into your paladin armor for patrol." Pidge commented, running her finger over the silver band on her own finger. Keith silently brought her hand up to his lips, kissing her knuckles gently.
Once they'd made it down to the hangers the others were already waiting for them. Lance was leaning against the leg of the Red Lion while Hunk and Allura were talking about something. Pidge gently kissed Keith's lips before she walked towards the hanger that housed the Green Lion.
"So, Mr. Married Man you ready for this patrol to be over with so we can get back here for you two to relax?" Lance teased. Keith only rolled his eyes before he boarded the Black Lion. He'd barely sat in his seat when he heard Lance's teasing continue through the headsets.
"Lance that is enough. We need to get through our patrol." Keith sighed, some annoyance slipping into his voice as he pushed the controls of his lion forward. Once they were out in space Keith trusted Lance to have his back and that Pidge would keep an eye on the radar systems for any distress signals. His mind began to wonder as their patrol remained uneventful.
"Keith I'm receiving a series of distress signals from a planet just up ahead. It's multiple so it might be from a small village." Pidge's voice cut through their communication system.
"Alright. Allura, Hunk I want both of you to stay up for arial support. Lance and Pidge you're both going to be with me." Keith ordered once they'd reached the planet's terrain. Once the three of their lions were on the ground they exited with their weapons drawn. Pidge glanced down at the computer on her wrist, reading the coordination on the screen.
"This way. It looks like the signal is coming from just over the hill." She stated, pointing in the direction she meant. Keith watched as her bayard transformed from the grappling hook to the double ended glaive she'd taken to favoring. The closer they got to the hill the easier they were able to see the smoke that was blowing through the air. Keith took a deep breath as he held out his hand, halting both of the others in the steps.
"Katie I want you to use one of your sensors and check for any signs of life. Lance can you get up into that tree? Use your sharpshooter to watch my back?" Keith questioned. The blue paladin quickly nodded before he deactivated his bayard, allowing it to return to the resting spot. Pidge knelt on the ground as she activated one of the sensor bots from her lion. The small bot flew over their head, allowing a green light to flicker into view as it scanned the rubble left of the small stone village. Pidge moved up to stand at his side, watching her computer screen. A beep signal the first zone scan was complete, the screen flashing red for a moment before the bot moved onto the next zone.
"Keith, Pidge I can barely make out someone moving through the rubble towards the cliffs." Lance's voice echoed through their helmets.
"Thanks for the heads-up Lance." Keith responded. He reactivated his own bayard, carefully stepping over a crumbled wall. As the Black and Green duo ventured through the small dirt roads Pidge couldn't help the nervous feeling that sent shivers up her spine. She glanced over her shoulder when she thought she heard rocks crunch under someone's foot.
"Kei-" her voice was quickly cut off by a hand over her mouth. A muffled cry escaped her lips as she struggled against the larger figure. The larger creature easily pulled her behind one of the few stone walls still standing. Pidge fought against him, attempting to kick her way out. The creature easily grabbed both of her wrists, holding them tight against her chest when she attempted to summon her bayard.
"Quiet little paladin. Wouldn't want your teammates to get blasted out of the sky." The creature questioned. Pidge stilled as she thought about Allura and Hunk still flying overhead through their lions. The larger Galra continued to pull her towards the far side of the town, opposite of where Keith had continued.
"Pidge where are you going? Keith is in the opposite direction." Lance's voice crackled through her headset. She fiercely shook her head, attempting to dislodge the Galra's hand just enough to let her get even a small cry for help out.
"Katie where are you!?" Keith's voice demanded. Pidge managed a small whine as she drove her elbow into the Galra's stomach hard enough to at least catch him by surprise. She stumbled as he dropped her, running through the dirt path, attempting to get away from him.
"Lance! Keith!" She cried, quickly summoning her bayard. She cried out in surprise when her foot connected with a large block of rubble, sending her tumbling back to the ground. A shadow covered her small form as she scrambled to get back up. A scream escaped her lips as she was jerked to her feet as the Galra grabbed her hair, knocking her helmet to the ground.
"Katie!? Katie where are you!?" Keith yelled, quickly back tracking through the rubble. He was met with nothing but static. He felt like his heart was in his throat as he turned in circles, searching for any signs of his wife.
"Lance do you have any eyes on Katie?" Keith demanded; his violet eyes glowing yellow as he struggled to control his breathing. A sharp pain shot through his back, sending him to his knees. He yelled as pain overtook his body, digging his fingers into the dirt as he fought to breathe through the panic. Lance quickly jumped down from his post, allowing his bayard to return to it's resting state as he raced through the streets in search of the black paladin. Keith sat on his knees in the center of the street, clutching his head between his hands as he released a yell of pure pain. His helmet laid abandoned on the street beside him in his frantic need to get the object off. Lance landed beside him, turning his head in search of any signs of Pidge.
"Allura either of you see any signs of a ship or something!? Something is wrong with Keith at the moment and Pidge isn't answering!" Lance snapped, instantly slipping into the leader position. Allura pushed her lion forward, watching for any traces of her friend. After training so long beside the other girl she had easily come to see her as the little sister she never got. Her eyes narrowed when she managed to spot a black ship hidden by the trees, a large Galra stomping towards it with something thrown over his shoulders.
"Hunk get down there and see if you can help Lance and Keith. I've got this guy." Allura snapped.
"No, Allura you can't handle him alone. Look at how big he is." Hunk complained, attempting to talk some sense into the Altean princess. Allura gritted her teeth as she watched the ship start, angling towards the air.
"Allura can you get a tracker on the ship? There isn't anything we can do at the moment. We're down two paladins so we can't form Voltron but if we try to attack the ship we risk harming Pidge. We need to retreat and get back to Altea." Lance ordered. He gasped when Keith attempted to shove him back, his skin gaining a little purple tint to it.
"No, we have to go after Katie!" Keith growled, barely managing to stay standing for a moment or two before his legs gave out from under him. Lance moved to catch the smaller man, watching as his eyes closed after fighting to keep them open. He looked up as Yellow lion flew overhead, landing a short distance from him.
"We need a plan Allura. We can run into this and put Pidge's life at risk. She'll fight with everything she has until we can rescue her." Lance continued, hoping he could get through to the other girl. Allura released a defeated sigh before she angled her lion back towards land. She exited her lion to check on the boys, worried that she hadn't heard anything else from Keith since his outburst. As she walked through the street she couldn't help but look around at all the destruction, her heart going out to the people that had inhabited the small town. She looked down when her foot connected with something soft, faltering for a moment as she bent down to pick up Pidge's helmet.
"Allura! We need a little help over here!" Lance called, turning her attention back to the mission at hand. She quickly ran in the direction she'd heard his voice, stumbling when she caught sight of Keith. He laid with his head against Lance's chest, his hair not a raven color while his skin had gained the normal purple hue most Galras had.
"What happened?" She whispered, kneeling beside the two of them.
"I don't know but we really need to get back to Altea. Hunk can carry Pidge's lion with ease. It's going to take both of us transport the black lion though." Lance stated. Keith only managed a small groan as he struggled to open his eyes, instantly being blinded by the little. He could barely make out the two figures around him before he allowed himself to fall back into the darkness.
The next time Keith opened his eyes the lights weren't as bright, just a little blue glow from over the doorway. He winced as he moved to sit up, his hands clutched the blanket that pooled around his waist. His eyes scanned the room, attempting to remember just what had happened.
"Katie?" he called, his voice echoing through the room, being met with nothing but silence. He gritted his teeth as he moved to get out of the bed, irritated when his legs refused to hold him longer than a few tics. He moved to attempt to push himself back to his feet again, faltering for a moment when he finally noticed the new color of his skin. His eyes grew wide as he stumbled over to the vanity mirror, staring at the reflection that looked back at him. His eyes were still their violet color but now they were surrounded by yellow much like his parents. The prince slowly reached his hand up to touch his teeth, feeling the fangs that were now there.
"What happened to me?" he whispered, his chest starting to feel tight from panic.
"You awoke your Altean side which in turn awoke your Galra. Something that happens from time to time when one of your parents are one half Altean which makes you one third." A calm voice stated. Keith looked towards the door, watching as Queen Melenor stepped into the room. She walked over to him, stopping once she was beside the vanity. He took several shaken breathes, attempting to understand just what she meant.
"We always knew your mother was full Galra. Until two days ago we never thought to test your DNA since we always assumed your father was human. However, we discovered that your father was half human. The other half was Altean, but we suppose since his Altean side wasn't the dominant side he appeared completely human which is why he was never discovered on Earth. In your panic to find your wife your body decided that your abilities were very much needed to protect her." Melenor explained, sitting in the chair. Keith slid to the floor with his back pressed against the wall. He rested his head against his knees, suddenly finding it difficult to properly breath. His vision blurred once again, unable to focus on everything around him.
"Where is Katie?" he managed to whisper. He lifted his head when he was met with silence, watching as the Altean queen refused to meet his eyes. Keith slowly managed to push himself once again to his feet before he started for the door. His hand had barely pressed against the scanner when it slid open. He looked up at his father, fighting the tears that now blurred his vision. He felt like he'd failed as a leader, a paladin and most importantly, a husband. They'd only been wed for a few hours before she'd been taken from his side, literally.
"Keith I want you to breath and calm down. Allura managed to get a tracker on the ship and we're following it now. Right now, you need to rest because the changes you're going through have given you a fever that your body is still trying to fight." Zarkon stated, holding up his hands. Keith gripped his father's arm as he struggled to find his words. He couldn't lie back in that bed without Katie there with him. Zarkon watched as he managed to shake his head, tears finally falling down his cheeks. He reached up with his other hand to affectionately ruffle his son's hair like he'd done many times as a kit. Keith took several shattered breathes before he tried again to form the words rattling inside his head. Zarkon sighed before he glanced over Keith's shoulder at Melenor. The Altean queen had been taking care of Keith since the other paladins had gotten back.
"Let him sit with Alfor on the bridge. Maybe if he can hear what is being done he will relax enough and perhaps fall asleep there." She suggested. Zarkon simply nodded before he led his son from the room. Lance and Allura glanced up from where they were sitting, listening to the scouts reports when they heard the main door open. Keith frowned as he slowly sat in the black paladin's chair, glancing up as his father stood behind him. Zarkon offered him a small smile before he moved to stand at Alfor's side. The Altean king had his hands on the controls, easily steering the ship through space.
"Who's watching over Altea if all three of the royal family is here?" Keith questioned as he shifted in his seat in an attempt to get comfortable.
"Honerva offered to oversee the day-to-day functions at Altea Castle while Lotor is looking after Dibazaal. Alfor is the only one who can steer the ship since Allura is still learning. And Melenor was looking after your health." Alfor explained without turning his attention away. Keith managed a small nod before he turned his attention to the screen. He felt a small pain in his chest when he saw Trigel standing next to the empty chair of the Green Paladin. The young black paladin took a shaken breath, once again reminding himself that they were going to find and rescue Katie.
"We have learned that the base we destroyed when you were still a kit was their main base. However, when we attacked there weren't many stationed their as most of them were out on missions of their own. It seems that at least one leader escaped and after many years has managed to rally their remaining forces together in a final attempt to take Voltron out. The lions are still relatively knew and even though Trigel can still pilot the Green lion we don't know if she personally would be able to form Voltron with the new paladins." Zarkon explained, glancing at his Green Paladin.
"From the transmissions that we have so far managed to intercept we don't think Pidge was the intended target. Thanks to her program we have been able to decipher the code they're using over their air ways. Several times Keith's name has been mentioned by the one we think is the leader." Trigel stated. She reached down to push a button, pulling up several decoded messages for the rest of them to see.
"So, you think after all these years this group is after Keith again?" Lance questioned, glancing back at his friend.
"Take out the known head of Voltron who just so happens to be the second born son to the Galra reigning monarch who cause a lot of pain if not a war." Blaytz stated, crossing his arms. They all glanced at Keith when he released a small cry upon hearing one of the few voice transmissions they'd intercepted. His hand covered his mouth as his eyes grew wide. Trigel quickly reached down to shut off the video, glancing at Zarkon. The Galra emperor quickly knelt in front of his son, seeing his eyes dart from side to side unfocused.
"Keith who is it? Who's the one calling all the shots this time?" he demanded, hoping a direct order would be enough to pull him out of his panicked state of mind. Lance and Hunk both shared a confused look before they turned their attention back to the two Galras.
"My…my mother…she's still trying to finish the order she failed to follow through with last time." Keith whispered, looking up at his father finally. Zarkon simply nodded in understanding before he stood back up, resting his hand on the back of Keith's neck to keep him grounded. Keith remained silent as he sat in his chair, listening to the other's conversations around him as he slowly drifted off to sleep, feeling safe surrounded by his team and family.
Pidge was silent as she stood against the furthest wall of her prison cell with her arms crossed. She glared at the two Galras that were guarding her, noticing neither of them were nearly as big as the one that had original kidnapped her. She pushed off the wall walking towards the door, smirking when both of them jumped.
"You must both be new recruits since you're stuck babysitting such an advanced prison cell. You don't really think I'd be able to get out of this do you?" She questioned. She couldn't help but smirk when she saw the look both of them shared. They watched as she once again leaned against the wall again with her arms crossed.
"Don't listen to her. She's the Green paladin that is known for her hacking skills." A female's voice snapped from the shadows. Pidge's eyes narrowed as she glared at the Galra woman that stepped into view. She had two markings on her cheeks and her hair was similar to the way Keith's own was. She gritted her teeth when she realized that this woman was her husband's birth mother, the monster that chose a rebel group over her own son.
"I know who you are and you're going to regret hurting him!" Pidge growled, slamming her fists against the bars. The woman only laughed as she stepped closer, clearly showing no fear for the smaller paladin.
"You can't do anything to me. You are at my mercy and you might want to stay in my good graces if Voltron doesn't want to be down two paladins instead of just one." She stated. She reached up, her fingers tracing a red button Pidge had already noticed. Her heart sunk as she looked down at the chains around her wrist, instantly having a feeling she knew what that button would control. She moved and sat back in the chair in the center of the cell, glaring at the woman.
"Now since I'm guessing you don't know my name why don't I introduce myself? My name is Krolia and as you've already guessed I am Keith's mother…his true mother." She stated, crossing her arms once again. She smirked at the furious gaze in Pidge's brown eyes, knowing of the temper that the Green paladin was said to hold.
"And since we have you I already know the rest of your team is going to come attempt to rescue you with Keith leading the way. He always did have a hero complex to him even as a child." Krolia sighed, turning back to the screens on the far side of the room. Her mind wandered for a moment to when Keith was just a baby, before the black lion's mark had scarred his skin. Her hands tightened into fists as she thought about the fury she had felt at the thought of her son becoming a part of everything the Blade of Marmora had stood against.
"Krolia listen to yourself. This is your son and clearly you still hold a place for him somewhere in your heart. You don't want to hurt him." Pidge stated.
"What do you know? You don't know anything about me!" Krolia snapped, turning back around to glare at the girl.
"I know how hurt he was that you picked this stupid group over him. I know how hard he has worked to protect himself." Pidge snapped, shoving the chair back as she stood. She glared at the woman, feeling nothing but anger and hate towards the woman that had put Keith through so much. She slammed the palms of her hands against the bars, ignoring the pain that pierced through them when a piece of the metal cut them. Krolia turned away from the girl, touching the knife strapped to her hip as she remembered the smile on Keith's face as a kit. Keith had always managed to put a smile on her face even after the roughest mission. Her heart had broken when Kolivan had told her to kill her own son, but she'd known that if she didn't someone else would. Too many of the members had given up everything when they turned their backs on the new Alliance.
"Krolia focus on your mission." She muttered to herself, shoving the door open as she stepped out into the hallway. She briefly glanced over her shoulder as the door shut behind her before she walked towards the main room where several others were waiting.
"The scouts have informed us that the Altean Castle ship was spotted entering our atmosphere. They should be here in about five hours." One of the Galra stated, pointing to their location on the map pinned to the table. Krolia nodded as she stood back with her arms crossed. Her mind began to wander to thoughts of her son once again. During both raids she had ordered other members to attack the lions, but she found herself wondering just what kind of man her son grown into.
"Krolia? Are you listening to anything we have to say?" the large Galra standing next to her snapped, easily regaining her attention. She glared at him for a moment before she turned her attention to the map.
"I want scouts stationed at each of the posts. As soon as they're close enough I want a warning shot fired. I only want the Black Paladin to enter this base." She ordered.
Zarkon crossed his arms, glancing over his shoulder at his son for a moment before he turned his attention back to the monitor. The young man was silent as he slept peacefully giving all of them a small piece of mind. Keith groaned softly as he opened his eyes, shifting slightly. He reached up to drag his fingers through his hair, faltering for a moment as he pulled his hand down to look at his claws. He took several deep breaths to control the panic building in his chest again. Queen Melenor had said it was his Altea DNA that had caused the shift which meant he would be able to change back to what he normally looked like once he'd gotten it under control.
"You know you don't look half bad man." Lance teased as he leaned back in his chair to look at his team leader. Keith growled slightly, baring his fangs for a moment before he pushed himself to his feet. Zarkon watched as he stumbled for a moment before he regained his balance. The youngest prince moved to stand next to his father, crossing his arms as he watched the screens, his eyes scanning the terra.
"This seems almost too easy." He stated, voicing what most of them were thinking. The last time they'd managed to track down the Blade of Marmora base it had been by sheer lucky simply because Keith had managed to send a distress signal from where he had been hiding in the vents. If the lions hadn't picked it up they would have still been in the dark and Keith likely would not have made it out of there alive. Zarkon reached up and placed his hand on his son's shoulder, giving it a firm squeeze without saying a word. Suddenly the alarms started sounded, bathing the bridge in a red light for a moment. Coran quickly activated the Particle Barrier on Alfor's command, the ship shaking from the impact of whatever had been shot at them.
"Your majesty there is a video transmission being sent to us. Shall I accept it?" Coran questioned, turning to look at the Altean king. Alfor firmly nodded, briefly glancing at Keith.
"Paladins of Voltron you are to remain on your ship. The leader of the Blade of Marmora have only permitted the Paladin of the Black lion to enter our base. If anyone else attempts to enter or any of the lions are removed from their hangers. Remember we do still have your Green Paladin and we will know, and we will not hesitate to harm her if you do something we don't like." The Galra stated, his voice distorted from the mask that he wore to conceal his face. Keith gritted his teeth together when he saw Pidge in the cage like cell in the background. He could clearly see the defiant look on her face as she stood in the center.
"You have one hour." The man stated before the video was cut. Zarkon quickly grabbed his son's arm to keep him in place, knowing he would do whatever they wanted if it meant keeping Katie safe.
"Let go of me." He sneered without turning his head towards his father. Allura and Alfor both shared a concerned look, hoping the young prince wouldn't attempt to fight Zarkon. Even though now he had the Galra height he was still overwhelmed and overexerted. He looked like he was going to pass out at any moment and was in no shape to fight.
"Keith use your head. You can't just go in there without a plan and you know that. We will get Pidge back without putting your life at risk too." Zarkon snapped, hoping to get through to his son. Keith only continued to fight against him, not caring as he twisted in his father's grip in an attempt to get loose. His eyes suddenly snapped open, glowing yellow for a moment before they all heard the Black Lion's roar echo throughout the castle.
"Keith stop!" Zarkon snapped once Keith had managed to escape his grasp, running towards the open door that was a direct line to his lion. Once he was in his lion he threw his helmet on the ground, slamming his fists against the metal wall. He yelled in rage before he sank to the ground, pressing his back against the wall. He reached up, rubbing his eyes with the palms of his hands.
"Lion cub." The Black Lion roared. Keith jerked his head up when he felt something brush against his leg, his eyes growing wide when he saw a lion made of purple particles sitting in front of him. He slowly reached his hand out to touch him.
"The Green Lion cub is a fighter. You have to fight the emotions you are feeling to listen to your team. You know you can't be the leader you need to be if you're letting your anger and fear rule you." The lion growled. Keith gritted his teeth before he laid his head back against the metal wall. He took a deep breath before he glanced over at his helmet that laid abandoned on the ground. His father was probably furious with him, but he knew that Emperor Zarkon had always had his best interests at heart. He jerked his head up when he heard someone step into the cockpit. Zarkon stood in front of him dressed in his own paladin gear.
"If you'd listen to me instead of running in headfirst." The older Black Paladin stated with a small smirk. He held out his hand to pull his son to his feet, earning him a confused look.
"Their wording was off. They said black paladin. They never said which black paladin. Let's go rescue Paladin Katherine." He stated before he gestured for Keith to take the chair. Keith offered him a small smile before he pulled his helmet on, reaching forward to grab the controls. He glanced over his shoulder to look at the black lion only to see an empty space where it had once stood. The black lion soared through the air easily at Keith's control, impressing Zarkon as he watched him fly like he had been for years.
"When we land I want you to exit with the bayard. I will stay here and wait for your signal. If something goes wrong you remember what our word is?" Zarkon questioned as Keith pulled at his gloves to adjust them.
"Honerva." Keith confirmed, knowing his mother's name had always been the easiest to get out when he was still a kit. He took a deep breath before he step out of the Black Lion, glared at the four Galra that stood at the entrance waiting for him. The largest one pulled open a wooden door that looked like it was ready to collapse. His violet eyes looked over his surroundings at they led him down several halls, two in front and two behind. He gritted his teeth when two of them stepped forward and attempted to grab his arms.
"Touch me and we are going to have problems." He sneered, balling his hands into fists at his side.
"Now, now little prince. That is no way to act or have you forgotten the manners the Empress taught you." A female voice stated as they walked into what he assumed was the meeting room. His eyes narrowed when he saw his mother leaning against the wall with her arms crossed. She offered him a coy smile before she pushed herself forward to stand up straight, walking towards him. Keith glanced over his shoulder as she circled him like he was prey.
"This is not what I was expecting when I asked them to bring me my son. You certainly grew to look more like me than I thought you would." She stated.
"Lucky me." Keith growled, glaring at her in annoyance. He stepped forward an inch and was instantly met with two swords pointed at his throat.
"Where is Katie?!" he sneered, glaring at the woman that had given birth to him. He bared his teeth in anger when she simply turned and walked towards another door. His anger quickly faded when she opened the door and he saw Katie standing behind two others. She looked unharmed from what he could see.
"Keith." She breathed, smiling at him. Krolia nodded at her two men to allow the green paladin to pass them. Pidge glared at both of them for a moment before she shoved passed, easily digging the heel of her foot into the one on her right. Keith chuckled, smiling as he watched her walk towards him. He wrapped his arms tight around her waist, glaring at his mother over her shoulder.
"Now let us leave and nothing is going to happen to your petty group." He warned. Pidge glanced around the room as she adjusted the leather bracelet still wrapped around her wrist.
"I'll let her leave. But you aren't going to go anywhere. You should know me Keith. I never leave a mission unfinished." Krolia stated. She pulled the knife from her thigh, allowing it to grow until it was in its second form.
"Activate the shield on my signal." Keith whispered just loud enough for Pidge to hear. She quickly nodded, wrapping her hand around the Green Lion charm on the bracelet. He'd managed to add to other charms for her protection, but she knew he would tell her which one was the most effective. Her finger pushed the charm right as Keith summoned his bayard, wielding his katana with ease and experience. She braced herself with the shield raised when one of the Galras surrounding them rushed forward. Her eyes scanned the room, finally landing on her own bayard across the room closest to where Krolia was standing. She shoved the Galra back as hard as she could before she dived under the table, running for her bayard. Right as her hand closed around the familiar item she felt a hand close around her arm.
"Don't touch her!" Keith growled, distracting the Galra enough for Pidge to activate her bayard. She reached around and sent an electric shock through the tip of the grappling hook. Keith smirked for a moment when the Galra released her, watching as he dropped to the ground.
"Keith we need to go!" Pidge snapped once she'd made it back to his side. He quickly pushed her in front of him as they made their way through the hallways, attempting to remember just what way they had brought him in. Krolia glanced at the few cameras they had stationed throughout the base, watching as they attempted to make their way though the maze they had constructed. A small smirk appeared on her face as they only drove themselves deeper instead of out.
"They won't make it out of here at the rate they're going. Why don't we help them out?" she stated, glancing over her shoulder at the large Galra that stood behind her.
"Keith we need to stop. Just for a minute." Pidge breathed, attempting to keep up with him. She leaned over with her hands against her knees taking several deep breathes. Keith stopped in the middle of their current hallway, glancing around before he slammed his fist against the wall. He'd realized about halfway through that their communication systems in their helmets weren't working so he couldn't even attempt to get his dad for help.
"Katie we have to keep moving. There has to be a way out." He stated, finally turning towards her. He faltered when he noticed red seeping through the white of her paladin suit. She took several deep breathes as she sank to her knees. He quickly moved to her side, catching her before she fell back on the ground. Her eyes were shut tight as she let out a small whine of pain, her small hands balled into fists. The Black paladin carefully rolled her onto her side just enough to let him attempt to figure out just where all the blood was coming from. A wound about 5 inches long went from her ribs down to almost her hip.
"Just…give…me a minute." She mumbled as she gritted her teeth. Keith glanced around, biting his lip as he attempted to figure out what to do. After several moments of debating with himself he bent down with his back to her. Pidge groaned as she wrapped her arms around his neck, letting him loop his arms around her legs as he stood up straight.
"Hold on tight. We'll figure this out." Keith muttered as he turned another corner. Pidge managed a small groan as she tightened the grip she had around his neck, resting her head against his shoulder. He released a small breath of relief when he finally saw a door at the end of the hallway. As he pushed the door open his heart dropped when all he saw was another room the size of the one that they had original been held in. Pidge released another groan as she shifted on his back, her fingers having a tight grip on the fabric of his paladin gear.
"She's not looking so hot Keith. Might want to do what I say before you get even more lost down here and she doesn't make it." Krolia stated as she stepped out of the shadows. Keith glared at her adjusting Pidge just enough to summon his bayard. As he moved into a stance to defend both of them a roar echoed over their heads. He quickly moved back into the hallway, pulling Pidge around into his lap with ease. He raised his arm to shield her from the falling rocks.
"Green." Pidge breathed, a small smile appearing on her face for a moment before it was replaced by a grimace. Keith glanced back into the room, a laugh escaping his lips at the sight of the Green Lion in the center of the room. He eased Pidge back into his arms before he made it to the Lion.
"Keith can you hear me?!" Zarkon's voice crackled through his helmet.
"Loud and clear dad." Keith responded as he sat in the Green Lion's cockpit. He glanced around biting is lip as he attempted to figure out how to actually pilot the lion since Pidge wasn't able to.
"What happened? The Green lion just left it's hanger and was headed for the two of you." Alfor's voice questioned.
"I don't know how she did it, but the green lion responded to Pidge's distress. We're inside now but Pidge is hurt and can't pilot, so I don't know what we're going to do." Keith responded, pulling a blanket from one of the storage containers.
"Green can get us back." Pidge mumbled softly, resting her head against his shoulder again.
Keith was silent as he sat on the edge of his bed, running his fingers through his hair again. He released a small sigh at no longer feeling the cat like ears.
"Paladin Keith to the Med-Wing." Coran's voice suddenly spoke over the castle intercoms. He rolled his eyes before he exited his room, pulling his red jacket on as he walked. His mind began to wander as he thought about what had happened after they'd managed to get out of the base. Pidge had been taken to the Medical wing the minute the Green Lion had touched down in the castle hanger. Zarkon hadn't been far behind him and had insisted that he be looked over as well since he hadn't been in full health when he'd rushed in there. Thankfully, Queen Melenor had been able to look him over since he didn't have any open injuries. He shoved his hands in his pockets as he thought about what had happened when the older paladins had attempted to infiltrate the base. They'd barely gotten within a foot of the door when the whole place had exploded. While he did hope his mother had gotten out he knew deep in his heart that she wouldn't risk getting captured and one of the other members had probably seen the bomb as their only answer. He figured that there were more of the Blade of Marmora out there but right now he would worry about what was right in front of him. The Med-Bay doors slide open as he pressed his hand against the scanner, a smile crossing his face when he saw Pidge sitting on the cot that had been set up.
"Hey you. Look who's back to normal." She teased with a smile on her face, pulling her arm away from Allura who was still fretting over her. He held his arms open as she walked towards him, pulling her into a hug.
"Just took me a little while to figure out how to change back to my normal self." He whispered. It still amazed him that abilities that had laid dormant for his entire life had sudden awoken simply because the woman he'd come to care about had been in danger.
"Who would have thought this whole arrangement would have been the best thing to ever happen to us." Pidge whispered as she rested her head against his chest, a smile of pure bliss on her face.
That is the end of this one-shot. I hope you enjoyed and remember to leave me a comment on what you thought.
