Chapter 9:

Beginnings

Xalanth stood motionless for an extended time, tense wings and limbs deathly still. A very perplexed, yet thrilled visage was gracing his broad snout. Perrath seemed more reserved then before, eyes not departing from the smooth floor.

Razeth smiled to herself and couldn't help but release her excitement at such stimulating events. Never in her life did she believe she'd be witnessing past events, especially those taking place some thousand years ago. The very notion caused powerful waves of adrenaline to pulse throughout her humming core.

"Did you guys hear that? They're gonna let him go!" she chirped with a surprisingly giddy expression, Perrath blinking before issuing a small smile. She never expect a reaction like that from Razeth. She'd lost hope in her ever departing from a mostly brooding temperament.

Xalanth hummed before gazing down at his exuberant younger officer. His powerful shoulders remained relaxed as he allowed the knowledge of what they'd just seen to take root.

"Indeed, it would seem that fortune has decided to favor us. However, that does not mean this will get any easier for him. From what I've learned, this is still a dangerous world for any ignorant drake to be isolated and wandering about in."

Razeth turned her honeyed eyes upward, her proud face a picture of satisfaction. "Well, he's a survivor. Even if he is forced to be by himself I think he'll thrive and grow."

The Legate nodded towards her before leaning his head against one paw. "Yes, Arus is incredibly resourceful in base nature … but right now he isn't the one I'm most curious about. No, that would be this … Ignitus."

Perrath's vision turned sharply towards the older drake, his bronze eyes finding her own as they shared a seemingly knowing stare. Razeth stretched her wings joints, small pops becoming audible as she chuckled happily.

"Yeah it was all so intensely mysterious, did you see how they reacted to him? He commanded the entire chamber. They even forced all the others out just so he could speak."

"Indeed," responded Xalanth, eyes flashing, "He is this one known as: The Chronicler. He is a most unique and fascinating of our kind. One that for all our resources, we can't seem to draw into full focus."

Razeth attempted to control her rather unsaturated desire for answers at this point, her gaze turning towards the still strangely quiet Perrath. She'd tried not to lose focus of her original goals, the last few hours having driven her mind and focus adrift at points.

Xalanth took notice and quickly stood, striding between the two drakens with a noticeable grunt. "This is a character that has been absent from our natural history for as long as the Empire has stood."

"Does he really manage time itself? Keeper of the records and events over countless thousands of years?" asked the Optio curiously, toned limbs stretching to accommodate her rapidly growing desire to know more.

Xalanth chuckled before shooting her a firm glare. "You heard the words from his own mouth yourself Optio, I don't think any further questions on his exact purpose are needed."

"But if he's truly as eternal as time itself, is it not fair to assume that he's still out there. Watching us right now? Judging us?"

Perrath observed Xalanth's response carefully, orbs filled with hesitance. The graphite drake grimaced before releasing a heavy laugh. "I doubt it, even though his statements seem genuine and factual, I have never come across such a being before. Never in the history of our glorious Empire has The Chronicler once been seen or interacted with."

"You mean, that we know of?" questioned Perrath quietly, eyes still burning against the Legate.

The drake eyed her carefully, his breath quickening as he felt the blood rapidly rush within his skull. Razeth took note of the rather awkward exchange before she focused toward the viewing screen.

"Well, we'll only learn more about him I assume - though it might be some time before Arus comes in contact with him again. I dare say we could learn a great deal about histories we once believed long lost to us."

Xalanth pressed his paws against the metal flooring harder, his looming frame releasing a small growl of obedience. Razeth quickly reverted back to her more disciplined bearing. Apparently, that was a sore spot.

"History is not the objective here, nor was it ever our objective. No, we must focus on learning more about the disposition of resources. This situation could very well benefit us in the long run; even though it may take more time. With Arus being at least free to explore the region himself, he very well might uncover quicker solutions. We shall surely find some to our liking."

Razeth hummed hesitantly, not sure if she should further push the issue. "Possibly Sir, but he could also wander about aimlessly and not do anything worthwhile at all."

"Well, be that as it may, the die has been cast. Arus is the only hope we have now, so the time for wasting thoughts on what could be has passed us over. As is your charade, Optio."

The green draken felt the color drain from her face, eyes slowly turning up to the smirking drake hovering before her. He had suddenly grown much larger and fierce then before, bronze eyes flickering and wings slowly extending outwards in a clear display of intimidation. She could just barely make out the frame of Perrath sinking away behind him.

"I'm … I'm sorry, Legate?" she stammered, losing her mental balance as he approached her.

"Oh, no need for formality now Razeth, you see, I've fully embraced the fact that you won't be reporting anything of a more sensitive nature from this point forward. You've gone beyond the borders of your personal maps now my crafty draken. It is time for you to fully realize the glory of our Empire and just how we shall reshape the histories themselves!"

The green draken stumbled backward in perturbed anticipation, her heart beginning to race like a roaring stampede at this point. It wasn't long before she found herself forced back against the edge of the time capsule.

"Please, Legate, if I have offered you some manner of insult … I greatly apolo-"

"Please save your empty words for one who cares to hear them. I took great interest in studying your profile the moment after you left my office just the other day. Your habits and attitude while participating in both the Obsidian Isthmus and Karvhag Waste Operations were fully reported in detail. You really thought such actions would go unnoticed by your superiors?"

She withheld a gasp and steeled herself, mentally cursing the reality of him being so quick to wield such a deadly personal blade. "I only wanted to-"

"Clear disobedience and willingness to ignore proper command structure and orders. An innate nature to grow emotionally attached to subjects of our conquests. A very clear physical disadvantage in almost any situation presented to herself. The inability to properly grasp the basic principals upon which the foundation of our mighty Empire was established. Your commanders have made it more then apparent that you have no further desire to truly serve our ideals."

Razeth stood deathly still, Xalanth's booming words carving against her scales like a chisel as she stomached her pride, knowing it would only make things worse. The aged drake grunted haughtily before resting upon his haunches before her, shadow encasing the smaller female.

"You see, Razeth, only those who are fully committed to our glorious Praxus will find themselves forever basking within his warm embrace. You have not the traits nor ambition to serve us any further, and of course, it didn't help you that Marcus force fed you straight into the very belly of our ambitions. You are in the very heart of Praxus … and it's here that you shall remain for the rest of your days."

The draken released a defensive growl, gazing up from her shrunken paws and locking eyes with this completely changed visage. Xalanth was indeed a dragon of endless talents and she now understood why her mother urged great caution.

"And just how many days might those be?" she growled bitterly, a new-found spring of rage surging within her breast. Xalanth chortled before rapidly striking her across the snout with his boned wing knuckle, the attack being so precise that she hadn't time to feasibly react.

Razeth's sturdy frame collapsed on the floor; eyes dazed as she coughed in horrid confusion. The callous drake hovered above her threateningly, not once removing his intense stare.

"However many days you allow yourself. If you truly desire to die quickly, then I'd be happy to arrange it. Though, I think we shall pursue an alternate route. You are far more useful to me alive at this moment, and I believe you will have quite the essential role to play in the coming purge."

Razeth kept her head anchored on the floor, the presence of the powerful dragon completely paralyzing her in body and mind.

"Come now my dear Razeth, where is that great pride I've seen from you these past days? I only want to see our greatest desires made real. I want to see our future secured. The glory of Praxus demands it - as do our betters. Will you not learn to accept that you are now part of something much more? Is it not logical for you to conceive that this is now the moment of our glorious history you must embrace?"

Her eyes snapped opened, limbs finding resolve as she forced herself up with a quiet hiss, left side of her snout beet red and beginning to swell. Xalanth watched as her lips slowly started peeling up in a telling smile, spitting blood onto the floor in response.

"No, that is the world you and your false idols have built for yourselves. Look around you mighty Legate … this world is dying more and more each hour due to your misguided ambitions. We have conquered far away lands and spread our influence to the very four corners of existence in the name of glory that is Praxus … and what do we have to show for it?"

This time she moved forward, though it was clear the larger drake found no threat within her actions. She growled up at him before vocalizing her long chained thoughts.

"We are hated, loathed and feared! Every species curses the mighty dragons and what we have become! I have learned more from the actions of these past dragons in the last few days then I ever have from the 'poisoned' society we've evolved into. They acted in honor and truth, for the good of every creature they've embraced upon their ideals!"

"Oh yes, of course. Very stirring and noble aspirations. One can not help but be inspired by aiming for such unity. Unfortunately, the world will never be perfect. This dream they hope to achieve, one of complete cohesion and integrated society … it is just that. A dream, and nothing more. You will understand … no, you do understand our true natures. We were born to rule. Created to lead and bend the will of others. This is our purpose. Emotions such as those you've foolishly developed and those that our cursed Ancestors attempted to stoke are pointless, for in the end only chaos will always rule. The signs are already there - my dear Razeth - perhaps you need to see yet more first?"

The cornered draken remained defiant, not giving an inch, forcing a hollow chuckle from Xalanth. The older drake tilted his head and investigated her thoroughly before clicking his talons.

"For all your weaknesses and faults of judgment, I have grown to admire your spirit young Optio. Surely you know that a crossroads is upon us. I will offer you one chance to make the correct decision."

Razeth snarled threateningly before her eyes went wide, Perrath having come up to Xalanth's side, her expression one of steely stone that was most unbecoming of her character.

"Please Razeth, you need to understand everything that's going on around you. We've made terrible choices and pursued difficult avenues in order to uncover our destiny. This dream they desire, it is nothing but a void of hallow aspirations."

Razeth's scales seemed to burn as the frustration spread throughout her limbs. "I don't think you even believe what you're saying, Perrath … this is Xalanth speaking through you. Think for yourself and let your heart make decisions instead of acting as his conduit!"

Xalanth just grinned before rubbing his snout, one of his wings having come to rest upon Perrath's back. "Please Razeth, spare her from your sordid thoughts. Perrath has come to her own conclusions and simply embraces our greater sense of purpose. It is her destiny to help alter our future and she has willingly accepted it."

Perrath nodded toward her counterpart softly, though her expression hadn't altered in the slightest as the stunned green draken sighed, her vision falling to Xalanth's paws as her attitude seemed to morph into one of greater compliance.

The Legate hummed before stepping forward tepidly, Razeth not registering it in the slightest. "I believe, that is also your true purpose to aid us in this great undertaking. However, you will have to prove to both myself and Praxus that you desire such."

Razeth's gaze came up slowly, locking with bronze orbs of terrifying resolve before she narrowed her vision, hissing loudly. "You're insane Legate, I will not surrender myself to such a backwards manner of thinking. This course will do nothing more but end everything we know faster."

"Of course not, but don't worry, I'm not without some bearing of mercy. You will learn to cooperate with our vision regardless of your personal feelings. Marcus and … your mother, should not have so willingly dispatched a brand new agent to bolster our loyal ranks. Simply too easy."

Her eyes went wide at the mention of her mother, resolve being shaken to the core at knowing she was completely at his mercy. It was very clear now that no deceleration of political immunity mattered, nor had it ever mattered. They were planning on changing the very balance of power itself, everything she'd leaned upon for protection was nothing but a farce.

"Yes, I see you are beginning to fully understand the futility of your situation. No matter what - you will not leave this place without full compliance to myself - commitment to Praxus. You are in luck though young aspirant … Perrath seems to see great potential for you, which I have come to agree with in turn. I will give you until nightfall to regain reason and embrace our plans willingly, but if you don't, then I can promise not only will those you care about suffer, but you will be the one holding the butcher's knife."

Razeth's heartbeat was pounding in her skull, vision locking with Perrath as she backed up slowly. Her "friend" made no visual alterations, but her eyes continuously bore the appearance of sorrow.

Xalanth licked his chops before warbling, turning away as he moved towards the exiting passage. "Nightfall it is then, perhaps more observation of these fools you so admire from thousands of years ago will help alter your perspectives. Perrath will remain with you until then. Consider your family Optio."

She couldn't bring herself to watch as the devious drake departed, her orbs instead falling to Perrath in sorrowed shock. Her expressions hadn't altered much, and she truly appeared to be an entirely different dragon.

The air became thick and electric, the cyan draken slowly moving towards her usual spot at the control panel before beginning to adjust dials and knobs. Was she just as devoid of sympathetic emotions as the Legate was?

Razeth found herself in a highly unusual situation. She wasn't use to experiencing these feelings. Ones of self doubt and disappointment. Sure she wasn't a model dragon of the Empire, but she always took great pleasure and pride in doing her duty to the fullest. She had some bearing on just what they were sending her to the Citadel to accomplish, but no matter how resolute, it was becoming an increasingly conflicting assignment.

"You should reconsider Razeth, not just because of your beliefs, but because it will be much worse if you don't."

Her head turned up in revulsion, staring at Perrath, who's snout was turned away. She still refused to believe that the gentle draken wasn't in some way just as conflicted, but was simply pushed to a point of no return when it came to her objectives.

"I will not betray what I know is right. Your … father … can do whatever he wants and threaten whomever he wants. I will not be his willing servant in this planned coup. Same can't be said of you."

Perrath sighed in annoyance before spinning towards Raz more violently then usual, her eyes narrowing in disappointment to that response.

"Are you truly so stubborn that you will sacrifice the safety of all that you know in order to be satisfied that you stood for your misplaced values? How might you feel if others suffer because of such vain attempts at stroking your ego?"

Razeth snarled in kind, frame finally regaining some surplus of attitude and resolve. "You're both ones to talk. You seem more then content to just give up your own personal values and principles just so Xalanth and his murderous Consul can reform the entire world in the way they want it. If anything, you should be disgusted at being used in such a way."

Perrath gave off a very rare growl of her own, surprising even Razeth, as she was use to her calm and non-combative personality.

"You have seen with your own damn eyes just how broken this world is Raz. All we want is to create a world where those issues will be resolved right away as opposed to putting off that which is inevitable. Death by a thousand cuts. We have an opportunity to establish an entirely new Empire without any of the issues that have plagued us to this point."

"Is that right? I have a hard time believing a society that embraces their freedoms and strength of resolve will ever kneel to Praxus. You are both delusional in such a regard. All that will follow is more blood and needless deaths. I can certainly promise you this: I will fight with every fiber of my being to ensure that history doesn't repeat itself. Count on it."

Perrath's eyes drooped rapidly before she hissed and slammed the console with one of her paws, another action Razeth wasn't use to seeing out of the once courteous draken. Her emerald eyes turned back to the Razeth harshly, the orbs filled with an aggressive determination.

"So be it then, Razeth. I'm truly sorry for what will come of this, I can only hope that your suffering is short."

"Yes," snorted Raz, her own honeyed stare boring back, "I'm terribly sorry for what you will suffer as well. Unlike mine, it will be eternal."

"Do you think it was the right thing to do, Cyn?"

"Of course it was, Ignitus wasn't wrong, Arus deserves to live his own life. If he was fabricating his entire story … then he's the best actor I've ever seen."

"Yeah, but I just can't accept that he's a liar. Just … something in his eyes."

"I know what you mean, I got the same vibe."

The two dragons stood at their favorite spot: a thick stone balcony overlooking the Temple grounds. Nightfall was rapidly approaching, signs clearly visible thanks to the twilight hues splitting the clouds and lowering altitude of the Temple.

"Something does tell me we haven't seen the last of him. The correct decision was made to banish him, but I think we both know someone like that will not remain in the shadows for long. Be it by his own will … or something else."

"Nah, that's suppose to be my job." replied Cynder with a insidious snicker. Spyro just smiling before leaning against the stone railing.

"They certainly suit you, but Arus, not so much."

"Perhaps, but that is his decision to make. All we can do is focus on what needs to be done in the here and now," she retorted before frowning, her wing coming up and smacking Spyro in the back of the skull with force. "By the way, thanks for volunteering me earlier, I appreciated that."

Spyro grimaced and rubbed his head softly, frowning before letting a sheepish smile grow. "Heh … I didn't really do that much, I just know to trust in Ignitus's judgment."

"Of course you do, but how about everyone else? I don't think they really like the thought of sending me north of the pass to deal with a species that has a very bad habit of being blunt. Not exactly the perfect blend of elements there to avoid catastrophe."

"That's why Terrador will be accompanying you." came a growing voice. The paired dragons turned quickly to the warming sight of Ignitus approaching, his expression one of comfort and veiled knowledge.

"Oh? So he's actually gonna take part in a diplomatic mission? That's a tad unlike him." huffed Cynder.

Ignitus chuckled before nodding in acknowledgment. "True, Terrador was always one for action rather then discussion, but I don't need to remind you that he has nothing but the good of the world at heart. He simply goes about things a different way."

Spyro hummed in response while Cynder just turned her head sideways. "Well, I think he's doing it just to make sure I don't cause any trouble."

Ignitus frowned slightly, though he knew her words had base merit. "Terrador trusts you Cynder, they all do, but-"

"I know I know, simply an unstable element in an unbalanced climate. I get it."

Spyro sighed while Ignitus came to a rest on his haunches beside them, gazing out upon the setting sun far in the distance. The hues of orange and yellow mixed with the shadows of various clouds to create a patchwork of lighting against the cold stones. Many attendants and Alliance members lingered on the grounds below, many eager to embrace the day's end and disperse to various evening activities.

"I want you to go Cynder, because I believe you're influence and courage is a far greater asset then any past action can come to compromise. You have done everything and more to right those forced wrongs, now it is up to everyone else to come to that conclusion themselves. All you can do: is continue to fight for them regardless of such indecision. Strength of character will always prevail in the end."

Spyro gazed at his mate, her eyes one of mixed emotions as she released a nervous sigh. "I know Ignitus … I just can't help but feel that I will make things worse. Especially with Terrador watching my every move. How can I finally earn his approval …"

"He wants the same thing we all do Cyn," interjected Spyro, his wings fluttering some before locking against his flanks, "Terrador is a dragon of honor, and he already knows your resolve. He wants to see you succeed as much as anyone."

Ignitus hummed in agreement to Spyro's words before lowering his snout slightly, brow creasing and taking note of just how much both dragons had grown in the passing years.

"Both of you have done more then enough for our world already. I know you feel that the fight will never end, but the truth is: so long as we're locked in this very place and time, life in and of itself is a battle that will never be resolved. You must both continue to do what you have always done, draw strength from one another and believe the world can learn to do the same among themselves. I can not imagine better examples to follow."

Ignitus took a deep breath, the setting sun warming his older scales. He truly missed being here with those he cared most for, but he'd fully accepted that his destiny set him upon a different path.

Spyro and Cynder both observed him for a time. Never before was their a dragon who could seemingly inspire without even trying to do so. Even two dragons of great power and ability as themselves found his presence to be one of a kind. It was humbling beyond compare and was the single greatest reason that they'd managed to reach this point at all. If only he could stay for good, but life was not fair in that regard.

He turned solemnly, smiling down at the pair before humming. "I didn't mean to drone on. You two have been through so much. I only wish I could do more to help … but something tells me so long as you're together, you'll always make the right decisions."

Spyro shook his head before approaching his mentor, being just slightly smaller then him at this point in his growth cycle. "We know you do Ignitus, but we also accept that this is our world to navigate now. We know that our actions are our own now. You did so much for so many years - we have to repay the favor."

Cynder gave one of her rare smiles before coming to Spyro's side, jade orbs filling with a warming vibe. "For sure. You have a greater duty to the Ages themselves now. We promise to hold up our end of the responsibilities … as tedious and annoying as they will certainly be."

Ignitus couldn't help but beam with pride at his two proteges. They were indeed one of a kind, much like the strange future dragon he'd met earlier. Their growth had surpassed all his expectations, but this was still just the beginning.

"I'm proud of both of you. I know you will do us all great honor. Still, do not lose your wits even in constant peace. No matter what others might say, one can always assume that some manner of ulterior motive is present. You need not look any further then the Temple itself - nevermind Warfang - or other foreign strongholds."

Spyro gazed at Cynder before tilting his head. "What about Arus? You really think he has something to do with all this? I know to put trust in your conclusion that he's from the future … but it sounds far too dangerous if that's actually true."

"I know it sounds insane, and you are right to feel great uncertainty and nervousness at such a conclusion. I myself have no choice but to maintain close observation of him for that very reason, but, it is also feasible to ascertain that his presence here was planned."

Cynder let her barbed tail blade scratch against Spyro's playfully, the purple half-smiling at the action before she spoke.

"So if he was sent here … then odds are he's someone that wouldn't pose a great danger to altering whatever future he may have come from?"

"Precisely. If it was intentional, whoever was behind it has no fear of changing what is in their own reality. Or, they have every intention of creating a new one. Now, that doesn't mean some manner of objective wasn't given to Arus, but as far as I can tell, he has no knowledge of what it might be. I did speak with Volteer at great length about what manner or method was provided in order to project him into our time, and I'm certain that both of you are aware that spirit crystals will be involved."

The purple drake nodded before noticing the sun beginning to finally vanish beyond the mountain peaks, retiring and giving way to more cool, evening breezes. "Yes, I felt that right away … so you think they have something to do with his memory conditions?"

"It's very possible. While Chroniclers have some ability toglimpse into past timelines, it isn't something to be done or initiated lightly. We look to our numerous records and scripts for that purpose … as meddling with the flow of numerous realities can have most dire consequences. No Chronicler would take such drastic actions unless no choice remained available."

Cynder scoffed before pacing urgently. "So the crystals were the primary reason he was able to get here … not because of a Chronicler's intervention?"

Ignitus tilted his head as an aura of uncertainty spread about him. "Possibly... but we don't have enough information about which time period he came from. Is he from an Age thousands of years in the future? Or perhaps much closer to our era. Can't rule out the distant past either."

Spyro let his eyes spread with growing realization. "Ignitus, what if he was sent here by you? Wouldn't it make sense that if he's from the same Age that youwould have had some hand in the event?"

The older drake appeared frustrated and gazed back at the younger purple. "That is a very interesting point Spyro. As I said before, while we may have the abilities to glimpse at different points in time … I know not of any power that can be harnessed in order to send one traveling through the time stream."

Cynder felt a tad discomforted at his acknowledgments. "It all depends on where exactly he came from I'd say, but I have a hard time seeing you compromising the rules so willingly."

Ignitus stared at her before gazing off towards Warfang in the distance, his eyes traveling along the remains of the infamous Ring of Fire. It was strange to see where he had naturally given up his mortal life. It certainly gave him a greater sense of material perspective.

"I wish I knew. I also wish I had all the answers, but I'm at as much a loss as any other. We will just have to wait and see if more information or clues are provided to us. Perhaps Arus himself will help with this troubling scenario - but for now - we must focus on what we can control."

Spyro embraced the statement and turned his thoughts to Warfang in turn. "What are your true thoughts on Zacharah? He has been away from the Temple so long now that it's hard to imagine what he could be thinking."

"That dragon has always had a thirst for lost knowledge and understanding, perhaps to a point where he has become objectively compromised. Knowledge is a wonderful thing for all of us to seek, but one should not allow it to alter or rule their emotions. Perspective is always needed young dragons, no matter how much sacred knowledge one might uncover."

Cynder ran one claw along her chin. "Do you think it has anything to do with Torid Towers?"

Ignitus let a sad frown settle on his snout. "I think it's an obvious fact that it has forced a heavy influence on who he is today. Of course, I desire with all my heart that he hasn't abandoned our true cause, but I can't help but feel he has slowly altered his goals."

"That would definitely be trouble. He has placed himself in a highly advantageous position." replied the ebony draken.

"Indeed he has, though it was more then warranted at the time. Dealing with our own kind offers great difficulties in remaining steadfast of mind. How to proceed is quite the conundrum."

Spyro took a deep breath of fresh evening air, his good wing spreading slowly to let the breeze stroke the itchy membrane. "I guess we will have to wait for Terradon's report to truly find out. Though, I doubt Zacharah would make it so obvious."

"No, he will not." snorted Ignitus.

Cynder just huffed before gazing towards the inner chambers. "Well, you will have to do it alone for the time being. It will be several weeks before I will return to the Temple. The Pack lands can be very treacherous to traverse, let alone actually dealing with them."

"I'm sure Terrador's presence will help speed things up." retorted Spyro.

Cynder grimaced and shot her mate a look. "Yeah, well I still think a better choice could have been made."

"Have faith in yourself Cynder. Make them see. Remain true to your heart and they shall learn who you are at long last. If they refuse, then you owe nothing to anyone else. Your soul is in your keeping alone." spoke Ignitus, snout half turned towards her.

"I hope you're right … I just don't want such faith to be misplaced. Not again."

"Hardly," snickered Spyro, "You never give up on a tough assignment. I know you too well when it comes to your work ethic."

Ignitus smiled in agreement before turning his gaze upwards, taking a relaxed breath. "All will be right in the world so long as we remain true to our natural goal. Many have yet to reveal their full purposes, but nothing is ever written in stone. I will do the best I can to assist you when my duties allow, but this is a path we will all traverse in our own ways."

His two companions let the words sink in. His steadfast and steady demeanor was always contagious.

"Thanks Ignitus, we won't let you down." stated Spyro, Cynder lowering her snout in concurrence. Ignitus slowly spread his wings, breath humming loudly before relinquishing his vision.

"You never have - or will my friends."

Arus released a growl of annoyance as the water soaked into his stinging wound, crescent tail thrashing slightly and knocking over a nearby pedestal.

Terradon snickered before catching the delicate vase with one of his wings, Korryana sighing in displeasure at the drake's temper tantrum.

"Oh will you grow a spine tough guy. Just looking at you it's obvious you've seen far worse, don't know why you're acting like such a hatchling."

Arus rolled his eyes noticeably before settling back down. She had been treating his sore wounds for half an hour now, and he was slowly regaining some of his former vigor, though her directness irked him constantly.

"Sorry, alright? If I could remember exactly how I received these scars and the pain I most likely dealt with in the process I just might feel more compliant. Unfortunately we can't always have what we want."

Terradon chortled before placing the vase back in place, turning his attention to the lithe water dragon who was constantly retrieving doses of liquid from a flanking pot.

"Just be happy that you're around to complain at all," spoke the earth drake, his frame standing at Korryana's side now. The aqua draken observed the wounds in great detail, painfully recalling that she had a distinct role in causing them.

"I still find this completely ridiculous, Terradon. We wouldn't approve of such extreme methods. Your Counsel will find it most disappointing when I present these facts to my father."

Arus glanced up, grinding his teeth together as he eyed the emboldened female. "So what you are a spy or something?"

She turned her fuchsia eyes to meet his quizzical stare, smirking and shaking her head. She forgot that this was really the first time they'd participated in normal conversation since her arrival.

"What an inaccurate statement. I am here openly and of my own free will to see if this Alliance is truly worthy of my Kingdom's support and recognition. Though, we were watching long before I arrived here, so you're not completely obtuse."

Arus simply smirked back at her before flinching again as the soothing waters pressed against his shoulder blade. Terradon watched in quiet curiosity, finding her abilities more remarkable by the day.

"So … safe to say you hold yourselves in much higher regard then? I find it hard to believe that even your ruling body does not use some manner of excessive force."

"We have evolved past such primal actions."

"I doubt it, perhaps you have just learned to embrace them in a different way."

She frowned before pulling the waters away from his scales, letting them evaporate against the textile rug beneath her. Terradon felt a sense of dread fill him, hoping that Arus wouldn't potentially damage what might be a promising alliance.

"At one time, we thought and acted like our more vicious landlocked cousins. You may or may not choose to believe it, but my kind have had far more interaction and influence upon the world then you can claim yourselves. In more recent Ages – yes - we have withdrawn from the primary stage of worldly contact, but not without our reasons."

Arus silently blinked and observed Terradon's reactions. The umber drake seemed spellbound, eager to know more about the rich history she was clearly conserving.

"That's all well and good for those here now, but as you might have learned, I'm not from around here." chuckled the shadowy drake before crossing his forepaws.

Korryana blinked before accepting his words. "Yes, that's true … but you are here now whether you wish it or not. It would be wise for you to accept what truly is and has always been in this Age. You may not care, but you can quickly end up dead if you don't. If I recall, you're in no condition to be making more enemies."

Arus snorted gruffly before turning his vision away, the draken smirking to herself before retrieving more water from the jug. His wounds were almost fully healed at this point, and the descending darkness outside was giving clear reminder that his time here was nearly at an end.

Terradon circled around behind him, stone eyes looking out the nearby window. Korryana had been offered quarters in the northern tower complex, as was common for foreign delegations; as the Guardians preferred them to remain close by.

"The Temple will reach the land bridge within an hour or so. After that the exile will go into effect. I will see to it that you are supplied before you leave, and give you a brief overview of just where you might be able to make a living."

Arus frowned before gazing around at the various pieces of decoration and furniture littered about the chamber. "I'll just go ahead and assume that not everybody has access to such luxuries?"

Terradon circled around again as Korryana smirked. "Well, the Temple is certainly the architectural and spiritual center of our kind, not to mention the Alliance headquarters, so yes, it's quite advanced in terms of comforts. Very few known locations throughout our world can lay claim to such accommodations."

"I beg to differ my dear Terradon, Nebulus Crater makes this Temple of yours look like an archaic effort more similar to that of less advanced primates."

The earth drake gave an exasperated nod, keeping his attention on Arus. "I suppose they're not part of the Alliance, so feel free to explore that fact if you manage to find them."

"I'm not quite sure that's high on my priority list for now." chuckled the runed drake, causing Korryana to roll her eyes.

"Your loss."

"Be that as it may," continued Terradon, his frame moving towards the rear of the room, "Perhaps the city of Warfang can accommodate you for awhile, but that will depend completely on Zacharah and how much trouble he thinks you're worth."

Arus nodded before Korryana withdrew what was left of the healing waters, emptying them into the same jar before lifting her frame upwards. "That should be it, the rest is up to how quickly your body recovers. I'm gonna go out on a limb and assume that it won't take very long."

Arus stretched his limbs out happily before pushing himself upwards eagerly. It really was a remarkable feat. Such abilities had to prove that water dragon society just might be worth their weight in words despite the mild arrogance.

"Thanks … Korryana." he stated softly before stretching his wings, the crimson membrane singing in appreciation as his muscles embraced rejuvenation. She gave a comforting smile in response before bowing her head in mutual manner of respect.

Terradon came up to him and half-smirked. "Safe to say this is the best you've probably looked since you got here. Let's hope it lasts longer this time around."

Arus stifled a laugh before looking towards the water draken once more, taking small mental notes on her more unique features. She was a stark contrast to the other dragons he'd encountered thus far, it was easy to admit he wished to learn more about every single one of them.

"Getting a good look?" giggled the draken while striking a pose. Arus shook his head nervously before grunting in a failed attempt to recover.

"Well, I've got a lot to learn."

"Sure thing, I wouldn't feel bad about being so curious on how others look. It's a great way to distinguish and learn without communication. I certainly have no issues with it." she snickered again before turning away, tail wavering slowly, hiding a slightly red tint on her features.

Terradon raised one brow before turning back towards Arus. "Well then, shall we go prepare for our departure?"

Eyeridges raised and he couldn't help but stare in response. "Our?"

"Yes, I am also leaving tonight for Warfang. I need to return to Drago Academy and meet with Flame."

"I see, who is this Flame?"

Terradon opened one of his wings to direct Arus towards the exit, both drakes walking in tandem as Korryana gazed after them, eyes fixed upon the darker drake. This was quite the curious development, one that she intended to take advantage of.

"Well, Flame is another Sub-Guardian in the Alliance. He's about as steady as they come and takes his duties quite seriously. He was placed in command of our training facility last year. I believe you met Ember the other day, yes?"

Arus thought back to the uncomfortably direct pink draken from before and warbled. "Umm yeah I can recall. She's pretty easy to remember."

Terradon laughed as he opened a door. "Indeed she is - well she is Flame's mate. She resides at the Academy with him and helps train a newly established healing division for our organization."

"I see, and she holds rank as well?"

The umber drake nodded as they stepped out into the sparse hallway. Arus made to close the door behind them, only to have a small paw block his motion. He gazed at Korryana as she stepped out just behind them, her tail sliding back to close the door herself.

"I think I will join you, I certainly will not see you for who knows how long, so might as well take advantage of it." she giggled before extending her neck blissfully.

Terradon shrugged while Arus just waved a paw, the threesome traveling down the stone hallway briskly.

"Yes, Ember does hold Sub-Guardian status as well. Both of them have been quite helpful in establishing the foundation of the Alliance. Without them we'd be stretched thinner then desired. Flame and myself will be investigating the situation in Warfang more closely upon my arrival."

Arus licked his chops as they rounded a corner, a staircase rapidly coming into view. "So, do you think I could visit the city at least? Is this Zacharah of the … agreeable type?"

Terradon gave a rather uncertain extended groan before shrugging. "I wish I could give you a good answer on that … personally I don't know him that well. He is from a generation that was before most of our times. He left to become Magistrate of Warfang before I was promoted. I know that he is trusted by the Guardians, but that their was also a good reason for them placing him away from here."

"I see, so he's a wild card then." replied Arus.

Terradon curtly nodded as they began descending the spiral stairs, Korryana taking up the rear. "I guess you could say that. I don't know what to expect either. We can only hope that he favors a more flexible position."

Korryana snickered behind them. "All these issues seem to be of an interior nature. Do you really distrust each other so much?"

Terradon kept his gaze forward, ignoring the sly drakens obvious bait. "We all trust each other, but communication could certainly stand to improve."

She shrugged before coming more in line with Arus. "If you say so," she spoke before tilting her head towards Arus, whispering quietly, "I wouldn't put too much faith in that mentality if I were you."

He just huffed before pushing forward. Being in the middle of such schemes was uncomfortable for him. It certainly helped improve his mindset when it came to being banished. Even without his memory he could stand to reason that he never invited such dangers.

The three reached the base of the stairs within minutes, Terradon leading the way as they proceeded out of the primary corridor, moving past several Guardian and Statesman chambers as they did.

"I've taken the liberty of having some provisions prepared for you. They should last long enough for you to find more permanent arrangements elsewhere." stated Terradon firmly.

Arus eyed him before brushing his tongue against his teeth. "I hope you packed quite a bit of meat, I'm pretty starved after all this."

"Oh, then you really should head for the sea … I swear you'll never go back once you've had a taste of some deep sea swordfish. Heck, even freshwater salmon makes for a terrific meal and nutrition boost." stated Korry with her maw hanging ajar slightly.

Arus smiled and let his tail slide back and forth. "I'll make a note of that, I have plenty of time to get around to it."

"Try not to kill your supplies quickly. If you gain entry into Warfang, then you should be able to restock there, but I wouldn't put all your eggs in that bowl."

The three proceeded under tepid silence the remainder of the way, Arus being thankful that the grounds were mostly deserted at this hour besides random patrols of Cadets or Sentinels. Upon reaching the outside of the west tower, they were met by a familiar feline.

"I see that you're looking better Arus, I'm glad that you made a rapid recovery." spoke Hunter quietly, his muzzle and face shrouded in the darkness of his cloak. A lightly built composite bow was resting at this side, along with an immense leather pouch.

Terradon bowed to his senior before standing aside accordingly, Arus also nodding before meeting the feline's gaze. "I appreciate the words Hunter, I suppose I have Korryana's magic to thank for the quick turn around."

Hunter turned his gaze upon the draken who simply offered up an absent wave of her paw. The cheetah just stared before reaching back towards his left, retrieving the pouch with both of his paws and offering it up to the departing drake.

"I believe this should suit you just fine. I trust that Terradon has brought you up to speed on the best course of action beyond these walls?"

The umber drake hummed while Arus offered a half-smile. "He's working on it, but I believe I can figure things out now that I'm not in danger of executions."

The small group chuckled to themselves as the exiled drake grasped the pouch, various fireflies and birds taking refuge in the stillness of the evening air, the Celestial Moons having quickly found their traditional positions on a blissful high.

Hunter extended one of his paws slowly toward the drake, the other lowering his hood to reveal a greatly satisfied expression. Arus gazed down slowly, taking note of the action and what it represented before offering up his own smile, his right paw slowly coming up and embracing the gesture.

"I thank you greatly for coming here, Arus. While it may not have been on the best of terms, I'm beyond overjoyed to see it end upon a satisfying note. I hope that in time, you can return here once more, and we can be as brothers."

The drake felt a swell of appreciation and respect grow within him. He slowly gazed around at the small group, Terradon offering his own firm nod and even Korryana giggling in return. Three friends was a good start, and he wasn't even counting Spyro and Cynder. Yes, it was indeed more then he could have hoped for.

"I thank all of you. Your trust in me will be rewarded, I promise. I can only hope that I have a true chance to return the goodwill soon."

"Don't rush it," chuckled Hunter, shaking the drake's paw firmly, "If that day ever comes, chances are it will be in a situation none of us could really desire."

Arus nodded before the respectful union broke, Korryana coming up to his side and smiling again. "Just remember, you may not be able to come back here, but others out there are not part of this Alliance yet. I would he happy to send word to my father of your situation."

That was more then he could take at this point. Such thoughtfulness was truly astonishing. "I appreciate that, but I think I will be alright on my own. I know where my friends truly are if I need them."

Terradon and Hunter bowed gently before Arus slid the sturdy strap of the pouch around his neck, the useful and rugged pack pressing against his right flank. It was rather hefty, giving further proof to how well they'd stocked him.

"Be sure to pass on my appreciation to Spyro and Cynder as well. They didn't have to do what they did, especially Spyro."

Hunter just brushed his muzzle with a paw. "It's classic Spyro really, you haven't known him as long as I have. That dragon is truly unique, and I wasn't surprised one bit by his impassioned defense of you. Cynder is also quite steadfast in her beliefs … though her mate is really starting to unknowingly rub off on her."

"I can tell, but please extend my best regards anyways. I hope I can return their kindness in full," he spoke before recalling yet another benefactor, "Also … the one called … Ignitus was it? Is it possible to do the same for him?"

Hunter and Terradon shared a quick look before Korryana blinked, tilting her head slightly. "Ignitus? What are you talking about, he's suppose to be de-"

"Yes, I will be sure to extend your gratitude to the Guardians for abiding by the standard set by such a noble dragon. He is sorely missed today, but his teachings are not." interrupted Hunter attentively, both Arus and Terradon seeming perplexed while Korryana raised her brows.

"Of course, you're right," replied Arus, catching on to his obvious slip up, "Such tolerant views and lessons are what encouraged my banishment, so please thank them for me for remembering him."

Hunter smiled and nodded, remaining a picture of calmness in the face of such a mistake. Terradon remained firm before also catching on, his gray eyes finding Arus before coughing.

"Alright then, it's time to get moving. Are you all set?"

Arus looked to him and nodded firmly, the umber drake offering Hunter one last bow of respect before turning on claw and beginning to make his way down the cobbled path. Arus shared one last grateful look with Hunter before quickly pursuing, Korryana hot on his heels.

The steadfast cheetah watched them depart, blue eyes representing perfect pools of wizened reflection. A small squawk emanated forth as Jaska dove from the heavens above, perching up on Hunter's shoulder perfectly.

His paw came up and softly stroked her wings, eyes having not left the departing dragons. "Well girl, I'd say we've made a valuable ally today … even if he doesn't know it himself."

Terradon led the way to the arrival pavilion, the two stone dragons from before still standing resolutely in eternal vigilance. Arus was at a loss for words when he noticed a stone bridge connected to the edge of the platform, the two watchful giants now offering a physical escape from the once airborne Temple.

He was also surprised at the sight of Terrador, Cyril, Volteer, Spyro and Cynder all waiting for them. He didn't know if this was to be taken as insult or compliment, but it mattered little either way.

"Ah, right on time. Glad to see you're willing to hold up your end of the agreement." chuffed Cyril firmly. Arus rolled his shoulders before proceeding forward, all eyes focusing him.

"I keep my word. That much I'm confident of." he replied sharply.

"It'salsoquitegoodtosee yourwoundshavebeenaddressed...," spat Volteer rapidly before tempering himself, "I really wish to apologize for that incident if you would allow me. It was all we could do at the time - you understand?"

Arus just shrugged in his direction before halting in the middle of the grouping. "I suppose so, I don't think I would have trusted an insanely unstable dragon with no real comprehension of his background either."

Terrador hummed to himself while his grandson took a shallow breath. Spyro and Cynder remained relatively quiet and out of the way towards the edge of the pavilion.

"I trust you remember the terms of your banishment. You are not to enter or interact with any Alliance facilities or personnel. Not unless authorized by a member of the Counsel beforehand. Violating this will-"

"Yes yes I know all that. I have given you my word and that should be more then enough to satisfy yourselves. I will find my own life and that's that. I can only thank you for the opportunity to freely do so." retorted Arus impatiently, causing Terrador to stiffen and grumble.

"Very well then. We wish you well in your future endeavors, Arus. May the Ancestors guide you." said Cyril in an aggressively dignified manner, one which only Ice dragons could pull off.

The Guardians finished giving out warnings and well wishes before Arus approached the bridge, gazing out into the darkness and seeing only vast wilderness. His gaze turned slowly towards Spyro and Cynder, the pair having remained silent, though their expressions told him all he needed to know.

The purple drake smiled before pressing one forelimb against his chest, bowing his head slightly in respect while Cynder offered her own satisfied expression. Arus felt that same feeling swell in his chest, and it gave him even greater resolve as Terradon came up to his flank.

"Alright, let's get this show on the road." he spoke before giving a farewell nod to his grandfather. Arus hummed in acknowledgment as they made to step off the platform.

"Arus, wait."

He turned in surprise to see Korryana before him, her fuchsia eyes spellbinding within the encroaching darkness.

"Yes?"

She slowly extended one paw, obviously clutching something. He followed her movement and felt something sturdy land in his paw. Pulling it closer, he let his eyes widen some at the sight of an exotic looking shell, obviously of an oceanic nature. It's certainly something he'd never expected to see in his lifetime.

"Please take it, to remember." she spoke softly, her neck arching elegantly. Arus met her gaze before offering a grateful smile. Now this kind of thing he really wasn't used to.

"Thank you, Korryana."

"Just Korry, I'm not that stuffy."

He chortled happily before nodding, delicately placing the shell in his knapsack before finding his eyes locked with hers for a seemingly endless moment.

"Alright then, I'll see you all in a few weeks." spoke Terradon before saluting the assembly, his limbs then quickly carrying him down the land bridge. Arus offered one more look behind him before following after the umber drake, not knowing if a return to such a marvelous place was in his future.

The balcony high above the Temple grounds offered a distant view of the pavilion, but one of his gifts could easily transcribe the situation taking place below.

Ignitus took in another breath of refreshing evening air, the stars far above offering up their eternal fires for all to take in.

"Young Variance – In time you will come to see your new found path within our world. A destiny … that is now joined within us all."
