"During a rare visit home to Longbourn, Elizabeth is confronted by Wickham. She is home to visit her mother, father and younger sisters during a month-long stay. Unexpectedly, Lydia and Wickham stop by on their way through to his next posting. Lydia is all smiles and joy, while Wickham follows solemnly. Elizabeth does her best to avoid the couple. However, on a rainy afternoon while she sat in the drawing room reading, Wickham interrupted her solitude.
"I am sorry I interrupted your space. Excuse me, Miss Elizabeth," said Wickham as he tried to back out of the room.
"It's Mrs. Darcy" insisted Elizabeth.
"Of course, how could I forget," he replied.
"What can you mean by that?" she asked.
"Only that I will never be able to forget that name."
"Because my name is… honorable, respected, decent"
"Because it is the one name I wish to forget," he spat. Elizabeth did not reply, stunned by his sudden anger.
"I grew up forced to bow to that name. When I could finally leave that place, it followed me still when I told others where I came from. I thought maybe I could make it my own, but no, that was denied as well. And yet, still he sought me out and chained me to this family instead."
"How dare you insult my family?! You selfish, arrogant man. You think Fitzwilliam behaved in any way to assist or insult you is ridiculous. I assure you he gave you no thought."
"No thought. I hope only to return the favor."
"Please do," she replied before leaving the room in haste. Elizabeth then packed her belongs and readied herself to leave when her mother would not ask Lydia and her husband to leave. She returned for Pemberley the following morning.
