New Year's Eve Kiss

Mike smiled at the merriment from the crew. They were laughing and talking, while Mike nursed his beer. Christmas had been dismal, and New Year's would also be. That was his life now that he had retired. He watched as Lieutenant Maddie Rawlins saunter towards him and smiled back at her.

"So, how is retired life?" Maddie asked as she sat down on the bar stool next to him.

"Boring. How's yours?" Mike asked back.

"Pretty much the same. I was sorry to hear that you finally got confirmation on your family. Hard pill to swallow." Maddie said.

"It was, but I had accepted they had died. Finding their remains allowed me to have a memorial service, gave me closure." Mike told her. He realized he was a little cold about it, but he had been the grieving process years before.

"That closure is so important too." Maddie answered. Mike was noticing the dress that Maddie was wearing, in addition to the three inch stilettos. It was attention-catching.

"It is. So, what are your plans for the night?" Mike asked.

"Nothing really. I have a hotel room upstairs. I will probably go up after midnight. What about you?" Maddie asked.

"I got a room too. I didn't want to try and drive home." Mike remarked. He also didn't want to spend the night alone in his project house.

"Its getting icy out, I hear. Best to stay in." Maddie answered as she adjusted the dress. It had spaghetti straps, dipped lower than anything else that Maddie owned and the skirt was way shorter then she normally wore. She knew Mike was noticing and she didn't mind.

"Exactly." Mike said. It was five minutes until midnight and he decided to make a daring move, knowing Maddie might reject him. "You know; I really don't want to spend the night by myself and we could slip out of here without anyone noticing, if you wanted to?" Mike asked and Maddie nodded.

"Let's go." Maddie said. Mike paid for his and Maddie's tab and they both quietly headed for the elevator. Both of their rooms was on the eighth floor, and about half way up, Mike looked at his watch.

"Its midnight. Its tradition to kiss the person your with at midnight on New Year's." Mike said as gave Maddie a long kiss. It left her breathless.

"That's a tradition I can get behind." Maddie answered just as they got to the seventh floor and she led Mike to her room.

Just a short one-shot. I like the Mike/Maddie pairing.
