(Disclaimer: I do not own Criminal Minds or its characters)
I'm so sorry. I have been coming back and forth to this chapter and it's taken forever to write. But here it is. I've started making myself write whenever I get a fanfic notification and... it's actually working.
We all know that you can't go on holiday without at least something going wrong.
Enjoy
Jack woke up to a hand shaking him awake. He twisted his head out of the pillow and squinted, seeing Henry grinning down at him.
"Come on! We can watch the TV! Mum and dad are still asleep."
Jack glanced across the room and saw their parents under the sheets still, Spencer flat out, the covers kicked off in the crib.
Jack grunted and buried his head back in his pillow. "Go'way," he grumbled. If Spencer was having a lie-in then so was he.
But Henry was persistent. He nudged Jack again, more insistently.
"Come on, Jack. I don't know how to use the remote. I need your help." The young boy paused for a moment, weighing his options before mumbling reluctantly, "you can pick what we watch."
He looked down at his hands in frustration while Jack raised his head, a groggy smile on his face.
"Alright. Where's the remote?"
Aaron rolled onto his front and looked over toward the static sound. The TV was on, Jack and Henry positioned in front of it. Aaron sighed and turned back on his side so he was facing JJ. He smiled at the sight of her peaceful face, reaching out to stroke her fallen hair back. Behind her he could see Spencer, his arms splayed out as if he fell asleep mid-stretch. Aaron chuckled at the sight of the little boy. He was wearing a Star Wars onesie, with feet, and the kid had somehow managed to squirm an arm out of the neck hole, unzipping half of the outfit.
Aaron sat up slowly, pulling some of the covers with him and inadvertently disturbing JJ's sleep.
"Blanket hog," JJ grumbled sleepily, turning away from him.
Aaron chuckled as he moved his legs off the bed and pressed his feet into the rug. He stood slowly, moving his legs experimentally, working the stiffness out from them.
He shuffled over to the bathroom, splashing water on his face and brushing his teeth quickly. He rubbed his eyes again, forcing himself awake some more before he headed back into the room and toward Spencer.
JJ must have woken him up because he was sat up on their bed, rubbing his eyes, his little legs stretched out in front of him. Aaron ruffled Jack and Henry's hair as he walked by them.
"Breakfast?" he asked, smiling at JJ as she slipped on a top. Spencer groaned and looked up unhappily at Aaron before rolling onto his front and sprawling out on their bed.
"Right," Aaron said with a laugh, leaning over and picking Spencer up by the middle. "I guess you need help."
Spencer tried to push Aaron's hands away as he was lifted.
"Do you wanna go to a Disney park today?"
Spencer raised his head and looked at Aaron groggily, after a moment his thumb slipped into his mouth and he nodded.
"Well let's get ready then."
They met the team downstairs for breakfast by which point Spencer had woken up properly.
Aaron let Morgan take Spencer up to chose breakfast while he took Jack and Henry for theirs. He came back carrying Henry and his own plate, Henry's being covered in a mountain of bacon and a small side order of pancakes.
Spencer came back with two pancakes and a pot of vanilla yogurt.
Derek sat down with his plates, carrying one with a similar amount of bacon as Henry's and the other holding a grilled cheese.
He smiled at the team as he handed Spencer a fork before taking a seat himself and grasping his sandwich firmly in two hands.
JJ, sat on the other side of Spencer, stared at Morgan as he took a huge bite of the sandwich. She was so focused on Morgan that she didn't notice Spencer sneakily drop his cutlery and pick at the sticky pancakes. Then, with his hand still sticky and his tongue roaming his sweetened lips, Spencer picked up his spoon and dipped it in his yogurt pot.
Aaron raised his head and frowned at the look of disgust on JJ's face and he followed her gaze to Derek's unusual breakfast. He chuckled, turning back to his own.
"What is that, Derek?"
Morgan swallowed and flashed a smile at JJ. "This, Jennifer, is a triple cheese toasted sandwich. They do some amazing food in this place."
"You're having that for breakfast?" Penelope made a face at the greasy breaskfast and gingerly picked through her granola.
"Better than rabbit food, baby girl, and you know it."
"At least her's is actually breakfast," Jack retorted with a smug smile on his face.
"Touché, kid."
Spencer who had been enjoying his yogurt a little too much, it being on his nose and eyebrow, looked up to see someone in a Pluto costume walk across the food hall. He pointed eagerly and swallowed his mouthful of yogurt.
Before he could yell out his excitement a napkin covered hand smothered his mouth and moved up to wipe the rest of his face. Spencer grumbled at JJ as she worked the yogurt from his eyebrow.
"Oooo, did you see Pluto, Spencer?" Garcia turned in her seat and waved at the character. "This hotel is amazing," she added with a happy sigh.
Emily glanced at the character and then at Morgan and she smirked.
"Did you bring your autograph book, Derek?" she said, poking Morgan in the side teasingly. Morgan sent her a sour look with half his grilled cheese stuffed in his mouth.
After breakfast, they went to Hollywood Studios and Aaron didn't have much time to digest his breakfast before he was forced onto his first rollercoaster. He was grateful the line for Tower of Terror was too long but he was sure he was never going on Rock 'n' Roller coaster again.
Henry and Spencer went with Rossi on a kid's ride since neither of them reached the right height for the rollercoaster.
Aaron came off the ride feeling a little green but he couldn't help smiling when he saw Henry holding Spencer's hand while they watched a Disney character walking through the street.
Aaron was thankful when he got more Spencer duty and he bypassed three more rides in favour of the ones for small children.
He waited outside of the third ride the team had decided to get on and read over the times for the Indiana Jones show. Spencer was reading along with him.
"Tan we go to that?" he asked, pointing at the show at 3.30.
Aaron glanced back and saw his team making their way over slowly. "We'll see what the others say but I don't see why not."
JJ caught up to them and pressed a kiss to Spencer's cheek.
"Fun?" asked Aaron.
"Oh yea." JJ nodded her head enthusiastically as Jack ducked under Aaron's arms to face him.
"It was awesome, Dad! You and Spencer should go on it later." Jack turned to Spencer then. "It was Star Wars, Spencer!"
Spencer's eyes lit up. "Weally?"
"Yea! We were in this big room with seats and there was a screen in front of us a-and then the room started moving. It was like we were actually in the film!"
Spencer looked up at Aaron imploringly, his eyes sparkling with excitement.
"Later, we should get lunch first."
"Aw man, you guys would have loved that!" Morgan said, rubbing his hands together and grinning.
"Next time you shouldn't scare Aaron and tell him it's in a box," Emily said.
Aaron swallowed. "It wasn't?"
"No. It's a huge room. Nothing claustrophobic about it."
"See, daddy," Spencer said. In truth this particular ride had been perfectly fine for Spencer to ride, Aaron, on the other hand, hadn't waned to be trapped in a small box with many other riders while it threw them around. (He wasn't particularly happy about the elevator at work but some things were unavoidable.) Spencer hadn't wanted to leave Aaron on his own, so the two of them waited it out.
"How about lunch?" Aaron said, eying the ride he'd refused a little wearily. "And then... if you guys want to go again, we can all go on the Star Wars ride."
Rossi shrugged, already turning to look for a restaurant. Emily, Morgan ,and JJ, however, shook their heads.
"The wait time for Tower of Terror has gone down. One more and then lunch?" Emily said. Aaron turned and saw the tower peeking out over the other buildings.
"The line was so long earlier," JJ said.
"It'll be even worse later, like it was this morning." Emily checked her watch.
Aaron glanced down at Spencer who was still sat contently in his arms.
"I'm happy to wait," Rossi added.
"Alright. But then we get food."
They walked the distance to the Tower of Terror and Jack, JJ, Derek, and Emily went to the ride (Henry stayed back, having cold feet from the look of the coaster, but Aaron was also sure the kid was too short.)
Aaron put Spencer down, smirking at the Mickey Mouse eared shoes on the toddler's feet. He took the boy's hand, and with his other hand shielding his eyes he squinted at the queue for the ride JJ wanted him to go on after lunch.
Hotch raised an eyebrow at the rumbling carts leading the way up the slope. Maybe lunch wasn't a bad idea since the queue stretched further than he'd be willing to wait. After another fifteen minutes, the others emerged from the ride, Emily seeming to be the most exuberant with the whole experience.
After regrouping, they started looking out for somewhere to eat.
Morgan looked up from his map and pointed to a homely little seating area beyond the crowds of people.
"That one seems nice. Quieter too."
Spencer was looking the other way, the opposite direction of his family. He could see a staff member, dressed up in a strange multitude of colours, performing magic tricks. Spencer gaped at him as he pulled out a colourful handkerchief from a stranger's pocket.
Without thinking, Spencer dropped Aaron's hand and hurried over, not realising the team were already heading to the dining area.
Spencer clambered to the front of the gathered audience and stared at the magician with wonder.
"Spencer?"
Aaron felt the boy let go of his hand and he spun around, just catching sight of the backs of Spencer's Mickey Mouse shoes before they were gone. Aaron turned frantically to the team who were already leaving.
"Spencer's gone!" he called.
Spencer followed the magician like a lost puppy, trying to catch out the man's trick. It was only as he started to clasp his hands together that he realised that a big warm hand was missing from his own. He nearly tripped as he turned, lifting his head and hoping to see Aaron. Instead he saw two hazel eyes look back at him and a frown on the stranger's face.
Spencer flicked his head, his eyes moving quickly amongst the other spectators. Still no Aaron.
"D-Dad?" he mumbled nervously, realising guiltily that he'd done the one thing he promised not to: wander off.
"Oh no..."
Spencer hurried away from the magician, weaving through legs and gazing up, searching for a familiar face. "Mummy?!" he yelled, tripping and catching himself on a man's sneakers.
"Gwandpa!? Daddy!? Jack, Henwy!" Spencer panted harshly and made a U-turn, scurrying toward a bench. He clambered on and, on his tippy-toes, he scanned the crowd. Hot tears were already making their way down his cheeks as his panic began to grow. He would never see his family again.
"Daaaaad! Muuuum!"
A few heads turned toward the distressed little boy. One woman made her way to Spencer but he jumped off the bench and sprinted back into the crowd before she could get to him.
"Spencer! How the hell are we gonna find him?" Morgan groaned in defeat, glancing at Aaron who was frantically looking through the crowds.
"He's probably terrified," JJ mumbled, brushing her eyes quickly as she stared around for Spencer.
"He's probably distracted," grumbled Aaron. The unit chief was watching a magician a short ways off and he paused his gaze there for a moment.
"He wouldn't do it intentionally... oh, Spencer where are you?" JJ pushed by a family, her eyes falling low to see any kids lurking around.
Aaron, on the other hand, was still staring at the magician. His eyes lingered around the spot before he suddenly took off toward it.
"Hotch?" Emily hesitated for only a moment before following Aaron.
"Have you found him!?" JJ grabbed Henry and Jack's hands and hurried after Aaron and Emily.
Aaron stopped at a bench where he'd seen a small boy and he whipped his head around. He found what he was searching for. Spencer was stood on a small grassy patch, his arms hugging a sign while he stared out at the crowd with watery eyes. Aaron could tell from the kid's shaking shoulders that he was sobbing.
When Emily saw Spencer she glanced up at the sign. 'Lost child point.' She shook her head and smiled.
Aaron got to Spencer first, followed by the entire team, everyone sighing in relief. Except Spencer. When Aaron grabbed Spencer by his shoulders he noticed the boy was hyperventilating.
"Spencer."
Spencer's bleary eyes managed to rise and he gaped at Aaron, his breath coming out in great rasps. He broke down then into loud sobs, falling forward into Aaron's arms.
"S-o-owwy." Spencer curled his fingers around Aaron's shirt.
Aaron picked Spencer up and turned to the team. "We should go somewhere quieter," he said while Spencer cried into his shoulder, muttering apologies and whimpers.
"We could go to the place Derek said about, for food," said Penelope, her voice a little shaky from the search. Aaron nodded.
"Calm down, Spencer."
Spencer tried to stop but it only resulted in him gasping loudly and sobbing.
"Spencer."
Aaron set Spencer back down on his feet and grasped his shoulders, forcing the boy to look at him. Spencer hiccuped and made a weak attempt to stop crying.
Aaron glanced back and gave the team a forced half-smile. "You guys go on, we'll catch up."
JJ looked skeptically at the two as Spencer tried to snuff his sobs. Penelope grabbed Jack and Henry's hands and turned them away.
"Come on you two, lets go eat," she said, smiling sympathetically at JJ as she guided the team away.
Aaron glanced over his shoulder. "We'll catch up in a minute."
"Don't be hard on him, Aaron," JJ mumbled before turning away and following the team.
Aaron sighed and turned back to face Spencer who was looking at him nervously, his fists rubbing his eyes.
"I'm not mad, Buddy."
"I didn't m-me-mean to." Spencer turned and pointed to the spot where the magician had been. His expressive brown eyes looked back to Aaron imploringly. "D-d-dewe was a magician... a-and I just... I j-just want-"
Aaron pulled Spencer back, holding his small arms at his sides. "You walked off, Spencer. What's our one rule?"
"But I-"
"Spencer."
Spencer's head dropped in shame. "Not walk off," he mumbled.
"And you walked off," Aaron said sternly. "Do you have any idea how many people are here now?"
Spencer opened his mouth to answer but Aaron shook his head, his eyebrows knotted together. "Don't," he said warningly.
"Lets go get lunch, okay? But for the rest of the trip you will have to hold one of our hands, it can be mine, Derek's, Emily's, but you must not let anyone's hand go."
Spencer gaped up at Aaron, his eyes red and welling with tears again.
"And you will go to bed early tonight. No TV... and no dessert-"
"No!" Spencer cried and Aaron saw a tear roll down his face so he quickly corrected himself.
"Alright, you can have dessert but early bedtime. And if you walk away from us again we'll go home, understood."
Spencer nodded, sniffling convulsively.
Aaron nodded too and stood up, holding his hand out for Spencer to take.
"Come on then. And remember, don't let go of my hand unless I tell you to."
Aaron found the others outside the onsite restaurant they'd picked before Spencer had walked off, and they found a large table inside. Spencer didn't speak as they ordered food, he just sat close to Rossi and kept his head down, especially avoiding Aaron's gaze. Even when their food came, Spencer only ate halfheartedly.
"Eat up, kiddo. You're here now, don't worry." Dave ruffled Spencer's hair as he sniffled down into his bowl of fries, pushing one past his lips on a hiccup and taking a shaky bite. Rossi patted his back and smiled at him as he finished the first few fries.
Spencer pushed them away and kept his head low, his sniffles getting a little faster.
Aaron saw Rossi quickly put an arm around the child and whisper to him but it didn't seem to work. Aaron stood and moved to the other side of the table. He gave Jack a little nudge and they swapped seats. Aaron sat down and swiftly pulled Spencer into his lap.
"Stop with the silly tears, buddy. I'm sorry I shouted but we were all really worried."
Spencer pressed his face against Hotch and he felt hot tears leak through the material and onto his skin. Aaron rubbed Spencer's back, catching JJ's eyes and smiling reassuringly.
"How about we finish up and head to the gift shop?"
"Yea!" Henry cried, seizing a loose chicken nugget and shoving it into his already full mouth. Aaron pulled Spencer back to look at him.
"What do you think, Buddy?" he asked. Spencer sniffled and reached tentatively for his fries.
"Otay," he mumbled.
"Are we actually allowed to buy anything though?" said Jack who had finished his food and was sneaking some of Emily's fries into his mouth when she wasn't looking.
"Under six dollars," Derek said with a wink, ducking before JJ could hit the back of his head.
They got to the gift shop shortly after, with Morgan stealing Spencer's abandoned lunch. Aaron held Spencer's hand tightly in his as he led the small boy into the big Star Wars gift shop. JJ let Henry and Jack go, keeping a close eye on them both as they sped off toward the lightsabers and pulled one down each.
Aaron glanced their way but kept his hand firmly on Spencers.
"Where do you wanna look first, buddy? Your brothers are getting lightsabers, do you want one of those? They have a green one I think."
Spencer craned his neck to the big display of lightsabers and the box that Henry and Jack were pulling various lightsabers out from. Spencer shook his head, his thumb rising subconsciously to his mouth. He turned around, his eyes brushing past the giant lego stand, he paused for a moment before something on the shelves behind caught his eyes. He shook Aaron's hand and pointed with his now wet free hand towards the stand.
"Tan we look thewe?"
Aaron squinted and saw plushies on the wall where Spencer was pointing. He had to be a big softy because despite the fact the boys had enough stuffed animals to fill a house, he still found himself leading Spencer over to them.
Spencer looked up at all the different characters they had. They had little ewoks and Chewbakas. On the top shelf they even had Darth Vadar. Spencer's gaze lingered on him for a moment before he saw something else, something better.
"Look, daddy," he said, standing on his tip-toes and poking the toy in question.
Aaron reached out and took one, turning it over to appreciate the craftsmanship.
"That's pretty cool, buddy," he said, offering it to Spencer. "Is that the one you want?"
Spencer squeezed it, Aaron finally releasing his hand so he could hug the creature properly. Spencer pressed his face into it and nodded.
Morgan, who had stopped fighting against Jack and Henry's lightsabers after a worker had given him a funny look, strolled over to Aaron and Spencer, taking in the sheer volume of plush toys.
Morgan pointed to the thing in Spencer's arms and he said, "What's that thing?"
Aaron glanced at it. "A porg."
"A what?"
"A porg: a type of avian that lived on Skywalker's secluded Island."
Derek stared at Aaron, a smile spreading across his face.
"Wow," he muttered, a chuckle bursting past his lips as he shook his head.
"What?" Aaron frowned, glancing down at Spencer who was beaming up at him adoringly, his porg squished against his chest.
"When did you become a Star Wars super fan?"
Aaron's frown deepened and he looked between Spencer and Morgan before spluttering, "I... I- Spencer is the one who makes me watch it!"
"Yea, blame the kid, ya big nerd."
Spencer was going to lose them eventually. Please think about leaving a review.
I hope you guys enjoyed and I'll see you soon.
