Prologue
It was in the middle of a cold and dark night in the South Pole when the silent air was pierced by the sounds of a newborn's cry. The young waterbender held her daughter close to her, while the Avatar laid next to her, joyful tears running down his face.
"She's so beautiful," Aang said through teary eyes.
Katara smiled down at the young infant. "She looks like Mom."
"Kya," Aang smiled.
Katara turned to face him, "We don't have to name her that, I still think Esk-"
"Katara," Aang cut her off. He knew his wife's heart and what she really wanted.
Katara nodded and tears filled her eyes, "Kya."
The couple snuggled up next to each other and observed their young infant. Unlike her older brother, Kya wasn't squirmy and jittery. Her big blue eyes wandered slowly around the room, but her main focus was her parents. She let out a big yawn before closing her eyes for sleep.
"She's so calm," Aang laughed. "Maybe she'll balance Bumi out."
Their five-year-old son was spending the night with his grandfather and uncle tonight while Katara and Aang waited for Kya to arrive.
"Do you think they'll get along?" Katara asked.
Aang planted a kiss on Katara's forehead. "They'll get along just fine."
When the sun rose the next morning, the baby opened her eyes and watched her parents sleep from her crib. Her peace was disturbed when something pulled on her crib.
"Baby!" Bumi yelled from her crib side.
Aang and Katara shot up from their sleep to greet their family. Hakoda, Sokka, and Suki had brought Bumi up to see his new sister and his parents. Bumi crawled into Aang's lap while Katara got up to get the baby.
"How long has he been up?" Aang asked rubbing sleep away from his eyes.
"Since the crack of dawn," Sokka yawned. "I don't know where this kid came from, but surely the real Bumi got switched out."
"Sokka!" Katara shot at him.
Aang laughed. Sokka was right in the sense that Bumi was quite an energetic child. In fact, Bumi had his moments that he seemed more like a child of Sokka than Katara.
"I want to see this new baby," Suki said, joining Katara at Kya's crib. Katara was a bit sore from the delivery, but the three-hour ordeal was much more welcome than Bumi's sixteen-hour arrival.
Katara held Kya out to her aunt, who took her into her arms. She smiled up at Sukki and nestled in her arms. The esteemed Kyoshi warrior's heart melted away.
"Come look," she motioned to Sokka and Hakoda. The two of them made their way over to get a good look at the little infant. Hakoda's eyes filled with tears while Sokka was in awe. They both knew who she looked like.
"Does she have a name?" Hakoda asked, already knowing the answer.
"Kya," Katara smiled.
"Hello, little Kya," Hakoda smiled at the baby. Katara, feeling comfortable with Kya in Sukki's arms, walked back to the bed to greet her young son.
"Come here," she said with open arms for her child. Bumi left his father's lap and melted into Katara's embrace. "What do you think of your new sister?"
Bumi pulled back like a rock in a slingshot. "Oh, Mom!" he yelled, beginning to run around the bed. "I barely got a look but I love her so much already we're going to be bestest friends and she's gonna be a great waterbender! I can already feel it."
"Waterbender?" Aang asked his son. At this point, they knew Bumi wouldn't be a bender, but that didn't stop the five-year-old from his prophecies. "How do you know?"
Bumi crawled over to his dad and threw his arms in the air. "Because I just know, Dad! Throw some water on her and see what happens."
"It doesn't work like that," Katara laughed. "But Bumi does have a point, I sensed she was a bender, so she could be an airbender or a waterbender."
Aang smiled. It was no secret that he wanted an airbender, but he wanted a healthy child more than anything. "I guess we'll find out."
And sure enough, Bumi's prophecy came true. Kya was usually easy-going and relaxed, but she had her moments. During one of these said moments, Aang was battling a three-year-old Kya to eat sea prunes. Aang's attempts were met with screams and cries until finally, Kya's outburst caused the water from her cup to turn into icicles that flew straight for her father's face. Despite his airbending skill, he was not fast enough and received a cut from his daughter's attack.
"I told you!" Bumi yelled from across the table.
Aang picked up his young daughter and spun her around. "Sea prunes do have a purpose!"
