A/N: Thank you TheRaichuinRavenclaw for Callie.
California "Callie" Goldstein
District 5, Female, 14
Dum, dum, dum is the sound that comes as she tapped her fingers against her desk. She found it hard to concentrate in school, unless they were doing something she liked, such as geography, but things like maths never made her want to engage. She didn't mind, though. The only education she had though she'd ever need for her dream to travel across Panem on a hovercraft is geography. Oh, the things she'll see and do, she thought about it everyday, if there were others out there, it sent a shiver of excitement up her back just thinking about it.
She snapped back into focus as the door to her classroom opened and she turned to watch in horror as three armed Peacekeepers rushed into the class and pointed their guns at the students. She heard a couple of cries but most of them stayed silent, a first for her - as she's usually a chatterbox.
"Where is she?" One of them grunted and her teacher looked around alarmed. She felt for old Mr. Whitehead as the awkward man had looked traumatised. He mumbled something and after none of the Peacekeepers had responded he spoken up more clearly.
"Who?"
"She." That meant that it was a girl, she thought to herself, there were only 5 girls in her class - including her. If she wasn't scared before she definitely was now, she tapped her fingers harder and turned around to face the front wall. She had known it was the inevitable. She hadn't done anything wrong but it had to be her, right? It couldn't be Polly, hell, even Amina couldn't have gotten into this much trouble.
"California Goldstein."
Her heart had sunk, she felt like vomiting but she held her tears in and stood up, going willingly with the Peacekeepers.
"What have I done? I'm so sorry, please don't execute me. I'm really sorry, I truly am." She rambled on and on until she had been taken to the town center's hanging stand. Was this the end for her? She was so young, she hadn't even accomplished her dream yet! Her hands were tied to the pole. This wasn't how they hanged somebody, was it? She had only seen one in her life so she couldn't know for certain.
A crowd had gathered in front of her, most of them had covered their mouths in shock. It was the worst 30 minutes of her life as she had waited for her fate to be decided, the moment she had seen her sister standing in the crowd, face full of flooding tears, she had broken down and was at a point of so much despair that she began to wail for mercy. A couple of moments later, one of the Peacekeepers begun to speak.
"This is the consequence for spreading rebellious activity. She has been speaking to all of you these last few months a bunch of bull crap. She's a liar, a deceiver, and a girl worthy of the punishment of a whipping."
Her eyes almost popped out of her sockets as she squirmed around while the man behind her shoved a rag into her mouth. The rag had barely muffled her screams as the sounds of the whip against the wind carried on and on throughout the hour. She had never felt so much pain, she had never wanted to die more than she did at this moment in time.
By the end of the whipping, Callie had hobbled into her sister's arms and stayed their, sobbing and coughing until she couldn't anymore. She was covered in bruises all around her body, big, small, and a very large one on her hip. She felt like fainting as she arrived at the front door of her house, she used her sister - Atomica - for support. Her mother rushed to Callie, and immediately lifted her up, holding up her head, and took her to bed where she iced her bruises.
Like Callie, Chlorea was very easily excited and energetic but when it came to her kids, she wouldn't let anything get in her way. Callie had never seen her mother so focused as she treated her wounds. She was no nurse, a chemical engineer actually, but the way she cared for her daughter with such a deep passion when she was in-need was like a nurse's relationship with a terminal patient.
She smiled at her mom as her eyes closed and everything blacked out.
A/N: Alright! I hope you enjoyed the chapter, it was very fun to write and I'm very excited for this SYOT.
