The Call of the savage by Otis Adelbert Kline is reimagined with a more accurately told twist centring around the meddling paternity tests of a bodice ripping guy who birthed Jan via a feral woman.

There's a reason why Jan Neels (born May 1883) would be abandoned off into the Everglades, because he's going to be a guinea pig for a long term study involving poor circus animals, Dr Lon Bracken and him..

As his father Erick (born November 1837) was a bodice ripper and his mother being a feral and physically very different woman, named Yellen, who was bought off by him from her already screwed up family, it was possible that his biggest fan, the rather wicked yet more sympathetic Dr Lon Bracken (born May 1869), abandoned him for a good reason. Dr Lon Bracken could well be Erick's illegitimate stepson, because he ripped off the privies of his own ageing mother Peeper Winslow Bracken, the estranged former wife of newly single parent Dr Frank Bracken. As a result, she now lives in a slum shack with a hyperactive bastard son named Tory Neels (born November 1886).
