(In this chapter we follow Steven)
Steven couldn't see anything, his head was ringing and he heard frantic voices around him. The chaos was re placed by a sudden rush of stillness, the sound of tree's brushing softly in the wind, the smell of pine. He opened his eyes and found himself sitting by a lake, the sand wasn't like ocean sand, it was more coarse and dusty. Am I dead? Steven looked around, there was no one there but the silence was interrupted by a soft humming sound. A speck of light shone in front of Steven's face, he reached out and touched it. It began to shine more intensely and a shape formed in front of him. A one eyed triangle wearing a top hat burst from the light. It began gasping for air as it fell on the ground. Steven yelped and jumped back.
"What are you!?" Steven stood over the pathetic shape in front of him.
"I-I" It's voice shook and he looked around. It's eye narrowed and he calmly brushed himself off and floated upward to eye level with Steven, "The name's Bill. Bill Cipher" He dipped his top hat to Steven in a polite manner "It seems that you have some sort of ability that brought me here. Do you have any idea what that could be Steve?"
"How do you know my name? Steven wrinkled his nose.
"I know lots of things!" Images flashed over Bill's eye, Jaspers shattered gem, Pink shattering a mirror, Volleyball collapsing on the floor of The Reef trembling in fear. Steven took a step back but something tripped him. He began to fall a long distance and landed on the wood floor of a strange room. There was a couch and a water cool, it looked like a rustic break room. His eyes widened and he lurched towards the couch, he was out of his body. His physical body was in rough shape.
"Yeesh, what happened?" Steven was startled by the door opening and two children crept into the room. They were whispering about him and Steven could hear their thoughts alongside their words. They must be twins… Or siblings at least. Steven floated over the two children. The girl was excited that something interesting was happening and the boy's mind was crowded with thoughts; confused, suspicious, anxious, excited.
Steven looked around more for the triangle guy, Bill? Was that his name? What a strange name for a… Whatever he is. Steven didn't see him or hear him so he attempted to leap back into his body. It worked, but he plunged into a dream. This time he was in Beach City again, he was on the boardwalk. He walked along, his hands in his pockets. He didn't see anyone as he passed Fish Stew Pizza. He glanced inside the empty fry shop and saw a shadow move. Steven leaned over the counter and a yellow cat-like eye sprung towards him.
Steven yelled and jumped backwards, summoning his shield.
"You seem used to doing that Curly, you do that outside the mindscape don't you?" Bill shot forward and slammed into Steven's shield. Steven was sent flying backwards. He landed with a thud and let out a sharp breath, he groaned as he struggled to get up. Bill began to lunge towards him again, he could hear frantic voices. Someone was shaking him. Bill was about to hit him, so Steven retreated into a dreamless sleep.
Steven woke up to sunlight beating down on his face through a stained glass window. He sat up shakily and looked around. The room was empty. Steven let out a groan of pain, his eye was swollen and he was covered in scrapes and bruises. He saw the water cooler in the corner of the room and realized how dry his throat was, but he couldn't find the strength to stand up. He had to lay back down and focus on healing his body.
A knock on the door jolted him out of his state of meditation. He opened his good eye, but his throat was too dry and unused to say anything. The door creaked open and two figures slid in.
"You're awake!" The girl gasped and ran to the couch. Steven sat up, dizzy from dehydration. The boy got a cup of water and brought it over to Steven,
"I'm Dipper, and that's my sister, Mabel." Steven drank a sip of the cool water and cleared his throat, it stung.
"I'm Steven," He glanced around awkwardly "Where, am I exactly?"
"Oh! You crashed your car pretty bad and we found you unconscious so we brought you here!" Mabel said so fast that Steven could barely process.
"Yeah, but where is here?" Steven asked, but before they could answer an older man wearing a sweater walked through the door.
"Ah, you're finally awake. You were unconscious for about two days. You slept all through Tuesday, and it's 4pm now." Steven's eyes widened as the man spoke, "I'm Stanford, but you can call me Ford, and I'm sure the kids introduced themselves." Steven nodded but didn't say a word. He reached in his pocket for his phone. He felt the color leave his face.
"How bad was the crash?" Steven looked around the room at their faces. They looked at each other and winced. "Was any of my stuff saved?" His voice rose and he tried to find the strength to stand up.
"No, there was nothing salvageable." Ford said pushing down on Steven's shoulders, making him sit again, "You could use some more rest, I'll get you food and water. Any allergies?"
"I-I don't eat meat…" Steven was trying to hold in tears. Everything was gone. His wallet, his phone to contact everyone with, and the Gem's letter. His heart beat against his rib cage. I haven't called Connie in two nights, she might be worried. I missed my therapy appointment! His mind was racing so fast that he hadn't noticed the two children who were next to him. Mabel placed her hand on Steven's shoulder,
"If you want, we have a house phone in case you need to make some calls, but I dunno if you know your family's numbers? We have a phone book around here somewhere… Are you from Oregon?"
"No, I'm from Beach City, on the other side of the country."
"OH." Dipper said awkwardly, "Uhm… Can I ask you a couple questions?" Steven nodded, "Ok, this is going to sound crazy, but before you crashed was there like, a monster of something in the road?"
"Yeah, it ran into the road and just saw… Well I had some weird dreams, and woke up here."
"What kind of weird dreams?" Dipper leaned forward. Did my dream play on the TV? Steven glanced at the small box. It was off at the moment. Before Steven could answer, Ford came back with a plate of buttered toast.
"I know this meal seems small, but after a traumatic experience it helps to eat light at first. Your body isn't used to this amount of stress, so you might throw up if you eat too much"
Steven let out a small chuckle, "If you say so."
