Chapter Six
It was a warm October night as Alex walked up to Piper's apartment, a bouquet of roses in her hand. Alex knew that it was rather cheesy but she couldn't help her self, she really wanted to impress Piper. As she rode the elevator to Piper's penthouse, a million things raced across her mind, to say that she was nervous would be an understatement; she was so close to dying due to her nerves. Alex had her fair share of good first dates in the past but she was worried that Piper might have had way better in the past. She stood in front of Piper's door for a good five minutes and finally straightened her signature black jacket as she rang the door bell. And no matter how Alex had prepared herself, she couldn't think clearly when she saw Piper. She was wearing a black dress up to her knees with full sleeves with a pair of simple black heels; her short blonde hair was straight in a very neat hair-do. Alex opened her mouth but nothing came out.
"You look really nice today Al." The blonde haired actress smiled at her and her smile widened when she noticed the roses in Alex's hands.
"Uhh. These are for you." Alex held them out to the smiling blonde when she finally found her voice. "You look very beautiful Pipes." The blonde haired girl smiled shyly.
"Shall we?" Alex extended her hand and smiled as the blonde interlinked their hands as they walked towards Alex's car.
"Al. Where are we going? The suspense is killing me." The blonde pouted cutely at her but Alex just smiled widely at this and continued driving away from the city.
After driving for a while, they both stopped in front of a restaurant on the outskirts of the city. It was a small two storey building away from the hustle and bustle of the city. It was surrounded by trees and a small lake on one side. Alex smiled at her as she too Piper's hand and led her inside the restaurant. The restaurant had a calm and cozy interior and they were shown to their table on the first floor. Their hostess was a warm and friendly lady who was star struck by seeing Piper but did not make the evening uncomfortable for them and she really appreciated it. The air was warm and Piper was in awe of the view as they sat at their table. It was a warm night, the sky was studded with thousands of stars and the full moon shone brightly over the lake and the greenery around it.
"This is place is beautiful Al." Piper told her as she snapped out of her musings and she found Alex looking at her with a smile on her face.
"I am glad that you like it Pipes." Alex smiled shyly at her as their waiter approached their table.
They quickly placed their orders and as they sipped on a glass of wine, it dawned on Piper that they were the only people around.
"Um Al, why are we the only people on this floor?" Piper asked her.
"It's because this floor is reserved for us Pipes. I happen to know the owner and I cashed in a favor. I thought you could use a day without being hounded by paparazzi or your fans. I just wanted you to have a normal day." Alex shrugged and Piper wondered how she had gotten so lucky to have found someone like her who understood what she really wanted. After her rather messy break up, Piper wanted to stay away from the limelight for some time and she also didn't want to drag Alex along.
"Thank you Al." Piper told her honestly.
As the night progressed both of them began to have a rather comfortable conversation with each other. Alex asked her a few questions about Hollywood and Alex admitted to having a crush on the blonde haired woman opposite her after watching her last movie.
"I think you were wonderful in the movie Pipes. I mean you rocked the orange jumpsuit and you looked hot as a criminal." Alex winked at her and Piper smiled at being called a hot criminal.
"I would have never guessed that Alex Vause would have found me hot as a criminal in prison. Maybe the next time, I should dress up as one?" Piper cocked her eyebrow at Alex and she could see the taller girl's face redden at the thought.
Alex loudly cleared her throat and Piper laughed silently at her. Alex was cute when she was flustered.
"Can i tell you a secret? I don't really watch my own movies. It's awkward watching myself and most of the times; I end up criticizing my own performance rather than enjoying the movie." Piper told her
"The movies, the limelight, the fans, they are all wonderful but it gets pretty lonely sometimes Al. And you never know who actually your friend is and who is pretending to be one." Alex nodded in understanding as Piper continued.
"So tell me more about yourself Alex. Did you always want to be an editor?"
"I mean I was always interested in writing and I loved reading and so naturally I wanted to be a writer and I did pursue it in college. My mother got cancer before my career as a writer took off and I took up the job offer at the publishing house because we were short on cash. I did write a book or two but never got around to submitting the manuscript. However I do some freelancing work, some columns here and there and I still get to read a lot of manuscripts and edit them, so it's not that bad."
Alex told her as she took a sip of water from her glass, her throat suddenly dry.
"I am sorry to hear about your mother Al?" Piper asked her as she placed her hand over Alex's.
"She is better now. The cancer is gone and she is in remission. She doesn't tell me but she feels guilty that I gave up on my dreams because she got sick. As a child, we would walk by book stores and I would tell her that someday my book would be displayed there amongst the bestsellers and that I would dedicate my book to her. I guess she is angry that she didn't get her book." Alex laughs at the fond childhood memory and Piper smiles as she imagines a mini version of Alex saying that to her mother, with her black glasses and all.
"Well now that makes me more curious to read your book."
"One day Pipes. Soon."
"Larry was a writer too you know. But he sucked." Piper tries to lighten the mood and Alex is thankful that they are back on the playful banter.
"I mean which serious writer writes a piece on edging Al? And you know what the title was? My jizz is my power.
I should have left him when I had the time." Piper told her and Alex nearly snorted the water that she was drinking when she heard it.
"My jizz is my power? What the fuck Pipes?" Alex asked in between laughs.
"I know right? And when I tried to talk him out of it, he got real mad at me."
Both the girls burst into a fit of laughter and as the laughter settled, Alex held out her hand to Piper as they walked out of the restaurant.
"Shall we go for a walk Pipes?" Alex asked her and Piper she simply nodded at her.
The cool air hit them as they walked out of the restaurant, hand in hand, identical smiles on their faces and they huddled together as they began to walk along the side of the lake. The lake was surrounded by small trees and wild flowers and the full moon cast a beautiful reflection on the water. They walked for a while as they reached a bench nearby and they sat close to each other, not speaking a word, both basking in each other's company, just holding each other. After a few minutes of comfortable silence, Piper broke the silence.
"This has got to be the best date I have ever been on Alex. Thank you so much. I can't remember the last time I had so much fun." She told her genuinely as she played with Alex's fingers.
"I am glad you liked it Pipes. I know I am far from the type of people you normally date but thank you Pipes for coming out with me, for giving me a chance."
And before she could continue, Piper placed her hands on her face and she pulled her in for a kiss. The kiss was soft and slow, like Piper was trying to show Alex that none of it mattered because she really liked her. She lightly took Alex's bottom lip in between her's and bit softly and that elicited a moan from the taller woman. When air became a necessity, they both separated and Alex could feel Piper smile against her lips.
"In case I wasn't clear Miss Vause, I really really like you a lot so you should stop thinking that you aren't good enough because for me you are more than enough, you are all I need." Piper told her honestly.
And Alex closed the gap between them and captured Piper's lips in between her own. If this had been a movie, Alex was sure that there would have been fireworks and violins playing in the background every time they kissed but this was far from a movie, this was real life and a pretty good one at the moment. And in that moment, as they sat huddled close to each other, fingers intertwined as Piper talked endlessly about the beautiful lake, Alex swore that it was in that exact moment that she fell in love with Piper Chapman.
