The cuffs refused to break, no matter how much pulling and tugging they did. The chains connected to the cuffs and the wall were only about half a meter long, limiting their movability. Kanan had normal cuffs, his fingers were able to stretch and wring; Athena's hands were completely encapsulated. Metal gauntlets encased her whole hands, forcing her hands to stay in place.
"Agh! I hate these stupid things!" Athena wiggled and churned as she sat there, hands behind her back. "My hands are getting sweaty and moist! Why did I get these stupid things while you get those things!"
Kanan pondered that for a moment. This kid had ice and fire powers - powers only known of by the Rebels. No way this guy just made those gauntlets the second he saw her use fire. He knew prior to their capture.
"Hey, hey, calm down," Kanan hushed. "Don't waste your energy on trying to break out of those chains. Right now isn't the right moment."
He knew that many surveillance cameras had audio, so he wanted to make sure not to explicitly share his true thoughts.
"My hands are sweaty!" she complained in an angered voice. "I hate this!"
She let out a yelp of pain.
"Ow! Ow!" she hissed. "Burned! Burned!"
"Don't use your fire powers in those," Kanan advised. "Fire isn't great on metal anyhow."
Athena paused, thinking on that. No way could she use fire in those gauntlets - her hands would be burned. Ice on the other hand…
Suddenly she remembered the movie "Frozen", a movie that was constantly on loop for her little foster siblings. These gauntlets were pretty similar to the one's the ice queen was restrained in. Maybe, just maybe…
"Let it go, I guess," Athena chuckled.
Kanan raised an eyebrow at the smirking kid - she seemed to figure a plan out all by herself. He didn't even get to make his comment about keeping a 'cool' head.
The door opened, the two Dumes turning to the man. He held two plates. He sat them down and used his foot to slide them over to the two. On the plates, some bread and a piece of fruit.
Athena gave the food a strange look and turned to the man. "What's your name?"
"Jalo," he started. "Jalo Hikra."
She nodded towards the plates in front of her and Kanan, "And how are we supposed to eat? Our hands are bound."
"Use the Force, Syla," Jalo said.
"Well...how do you know if I can use the Force or not?"
"It's genetic." Jalo sat on the same crate he had before. "I could bet big creds that you've been using the Force for a while now. You're able to shoot fire out of your hands, anyhow. By the way, better not try to use fire while in those cuffs. You'll get burned pretty bad."
So, one of their relatives were definitely Force-sensitive.
"Noted," she remarked. "So...if you don't mind me asking, where are you taking us?"
"To the planet where your mother died and you were born," the blond man said. "Earth."
"How are you even able to get to and from Earth? We were accidentally sucked into random wormholes to get there and back," Kanan asked.
"I have my ways," Jalo shrugged.
"Why are you taking us there?" Athena questioned.
"You've always felt that shadow following you, haven't you, Syla? That dark cloak hanging onto you no matter where you went?" Jalo started. It reminded Athena of a storytelling villain the way he talked. "That was Abeloth. Earth is her prison. That's where the Ones locked her up. There's a reason Jedi were never allowed to go to Earth; Abeloth would suck their soul out the longer they stayed. But, you - she didn't feed off you. You fed off her. She's been slowly merging with you since your birth, being the first Force-sensitive born on that miserable mud-ball.
"She's going to return to the universe one day, and you're the vessel she'll use. Your brother here would be the backup in case you die. I'm just protecting you, really. Those Americans on Earth I guess got some way of purifying you so you can't harbor her, but I have doubts. They're a primitive people on a primitive planet. But, they're the best chance this universe has got."
"So...you really are trying to help us...so why the chains?" Athena questioned. She knew to keep this guy talking. Get as much information out of him as possible.
"Because you'll kill me." he bluntly stated.
"Why are you so sure I'd kill you? You have a laser sword," Athena pointed out.
"You can shoot fire out of your hands," he sighed.
"Doesn't mean I know how to use it."
"Abeloth has fueled your powers since you were born. You have no clue just how powerful you are," he shook his head, almost in what seemed to be regret.
Athena was curious. She had never heard of these 'Ones' or this 'Abeloth'. "Why do you think I'd use my powers for this Abeloth? Why wouldn't I just use these powers to defeat her."
"Because she has too much influence over you. No matter what you do, she has you under her control and she'll use you as her puppet to come back and destroy the universe," he seemed angry now. Not at her, however.
"You're an Inquisitor, why would you care about what gets destroyed?" Kanan questioned.
"Believe it or not, I defected from the Empire many years ago, Caleb. I am no longer Second Brother. I'm just a bounty hunter trying to save the universe," Jalo shook his head again. "I'm just trying…trying to make things right again."
"Why don't you just kill us then? Abeloth can't come back if both of her hosts are dead," Athena questioned.
He took a long pause as he looked away from the two, staring at nothing now. Finally, he spoke in a regretful voice.
"Because I don't want to kill you. You don't deserve that. Not yet, at least."
He abruptly stood and left. Athena and Kanan were left to look at each other with an inquisitive look.
"So...do you know anything about these Ones or this Abeloth person?" Athena questioned. "Or is this guy just crazy?"
Kanan sighed, taking a long blink before speaking. "I haven't heard of them in a long time. The One's, also known as the Gods of Mortis, were basically deities that represented the Living Force. The Son was the embodiment of the dark side, the Daughter as the light, and the Father as the middle."
"So who's Abeloth?"
"I've only heard myths and tales back during the Jedi Order," Kanan admitted. "But, from what I remember, she was Mother at one point until she went completely berserk and became a dangerous being capable of destroying the universe. I was told that she was destroyed millenniums ago...I can't imagine that the Ones would just lock her up in a planet."
Athena shrugged, "This is all really weird to me anyhow."
"If what he's saying is true, and that Abeloth is still in existence," Kanan shook his head. This was crazy - these tales were so old. "The Ones died years ago during the Clone Wars after Master Skywalker, Master Kenobi, and…"
"And?"
"And Ahsoka," he said. "Ahsoka told me about it once. She, Master Kenobi, and Master Skywalker were transported to Mortis. After a battle, the Ones were all killed. That would mean Abeloth would have no one to keep her in check…"
"So what he's saying is true? This Abeloth woman is going to escape and use me as her vessel?" Athena questioned. She didn't know it, but ice was covering her arms now.
"We can't be sure," Kanan said. "He could be telling us complete lies."
"This is insane," Athena shook her head.
Kanan couldn't agree more. But, this whole thing did click in a couple places. The way Ahsoka described it, it seemed like they had similar experiences in strange space travel - her to Mortis, them to Earth. Sucked into a mysterious rift of the universe and spat right back out. The shadow - the shadow was a perfect description of Athena's. A supernaturally dark mass that clung onto her. If this was true, the strange Force properties around it would make complete sense. Abeloth was the one to blame.
He looked to the girl, now struggling to lift the bread with the Force. He couldn't fathom that such a horrible being could possess such a young and bright girl.
About thirty minutes later, Kanan and Athena nearly fell over, the ship around them lurched so hard. Athena's face actually landed in the remnants of her bread. She picked herself up, huffing a sigh of anger. Her arms were completely white with frost now.
Her skin was cold while her blood boiled beneath. She felt the gauntlets crack in a brittle snap. All she needed was for Jalo to get close.
When he entered the room, he said, "Alright, you're back home, Syla. Welcome back to Earth. I cannot express how much I hate-"
Flash!
A flash of bright white shot from her hands. Jalo's body slammed into the wall beside the door. A block of ice across his torso, his arms crossed in front of his chest, encasing him in the freezing restraint. His head smacked so hard against the wall, it knocked him unconscious.
She saw his feet were still free and put her hands out to create a little encasing around his feet, plastering them to the ground.
The girl went over to Kanan, placing her ice cold hands on the outsides of the cuffs. They eventually snapped and freed the male Jedi.
He stood, wringing his now free wrists, "Good job, kid."
"Let's go!" Athena encouraged.
Kanan reached his hand out and took his lightsaber off of Jalo's belt. Weird, was he about to give it back to him? He left the other saber on his belt. It wasn't important - Jalo was out cold for now.
The two soon dashed for the cockpit, only to see that they were in front of some large gray building. Athena froze as she saw the red, white, and blue flag waving on top of it.
"Shit! We're in America!" she exclaimed.
"Do you think we can make it out of here in this?" Kanan questioned.
She scanned her eyes around the area. There was one large section of pavement below them, also surrounding the building. A couple of armored trucks on the other side of the lot. A couple of armed guards patrolling near the far fence. It was shaded for the most part - hidden by the thousands of lush green trees surrounding them.
"This looks like some kind of military base," Athena shook her head. "In this big thing, we'd be noticed for miles. Should we make a run for it?"
"There's some armed guards patrolling, but also a lot of coverage in these trees," Kanan said. "Do you think your people have a strong enough weapon to take us out of the sky?"
"Probably," Athena shrugged.
"Then let's make a run for it. Keep close by me," Kanan started off, running for the exit, Athena quick to follow.
There was some shouting, then an alarm blaring. It was so fast, they couldn't even comprehend it all. Athena used her ice as a shield for several bullets. Fear really is a good ally in this kind of situation. It kept her on her toes. Once the two reached the fence, Athena stood back to back with Kanan. She created a wall of ice around them as Kanan cut his lightsaber through the metal fence.
Then they ran.
They ran for who knows how long and how far. No matter how far they ran, it didn't feel far enough. Far enough from those guns, far enough from those sirens, far enough from the former Inquisitor.
