"You're Jedi!"
"And you are?" Athena was wide-eyed at the person with the hand on her shoulder. It was a girl, somewhere near her age, maybe a little older. The girl seemed ecstatic to come in contact with these two.
"My name is Rachelle. But you can call me Rae," she took her hand away. The girl moved quickly so she stood in front of the bench Athena and Kanan sat on. The two siblings turned to face her, eyes skeptical.
"How- are you an Earthling?" Kanan questioned.
"No, I'm from your galaxy," the girl named Rae said, her eyes gleaming with joy. It was like she had found an oasis in the middle of a desert. "I'm not from here at all."
Athena scanned her eyes over the girl. She looked a little taller than her, maybe a little taller than Ezra. She wore a white dress with gray stretch pants underneath, brown boots on her feet. This kid may have on Earth clothes, but she didn't coordinate like one. She had a black and purple bookbag slung over her shoulder. Her hair was wavy and dark, tied off in a ponytail resting on her shoulder. Her skin had a golden glow; dark yet bright.
"Is that a bracelet made from a holocron?" she chuckled in astonishment, pointing to Athena's wrist.
Athena hadn't even noticed the bracelet her mother had given her was glowing now. The blonde girl twisted her wrist to examine her teal bracelet glowing brighter than usual.
"You know about holocrons?" Kanan questioned.
She nodded, "Yeah. I'm a Jedi- well, Jedi Padawan." she shrugged. "I haven't finished my training, exactly."
"How - how'd you know we were Jedi?" Athena questioned.
"I have no idea how, but as soon as I got near you two, it's like I could sense things again," she started. "This planet is insane. I got sucked into a wormhole and sent here - the planet no Jedi nor Sith can use the Force on. Then - you!" Rae grabbed Athena's hand, examining it with interest. "You can use the Force! You can spit fire out of the palm of your hand! How do you do it? Who's your Master?"
"Um...well-"
"Who's yours?" Kanan skeptically questioned, raising an eyebrow at the kid.
Suddenly the girl's bright and cheerful face drained of all color. Her bright light of joy dimmed as she glanced to the ground, speaking in a suddenly solemn voice. "My Master...was Luminara Unduli. She-" she let out a sigh. "We were attacked by the Empire and...they captured her. I barely made it out alive."
Athena retracted her hand from the girl's grasp. She scanned her eyes around them, seeing people walking all around them. This was not a subject to be discussed so widely in public. "Let's talk somewhere else. Maybe buy some food, I'm starving."
"I know a place," the girl with dark curls said, still a little down in comparison to twenty-seconds ago. "I've been in this town for about six months now."
Athena and Kanan shared an unsure glace. Athena stood, then Kanan. They cautiously followed the girl a little down the road, just past the CVS store, to rows of small-stores. The roofs of some were multi-color, covered with a range of colorful hexagons. It looked like something Sabine would paint all over the Ghost.
The girl in white led them to a little green and yellow sub shop.
Subway.
The girl in white bought them a couple half-sized subs and bought herself one as well. They sat at a table right outside of the store, an umbrella casting a shadow of protection over them - giving them some rest from the burning sun.
"So, what brought you two to Earth?" Rae questioned, wiping away the remnants of her last bite on her lips. "Are you guys Master and Padawan?"
"No," Athena said. "And, actually, I was born here - on Earth."
"What?" Rae laughed. "There's no way…" she saw Athena wasn't lying. She had a blank face as she blinked a few times. "You're serious?"
Athena nodded, "Yeah. I guess I'm just special."
"What about you?" Rae looked to Kanan.
"We were actually kidnapped by an Inquisitor," Kanan said. "Well, 'former' Inquisitor."
"Yeah, the whole thing was crazy," Athena let out a chuckle.
"Blond?"
"Uh, yeah," Athena was confused as she lifted up a lock of her own hair. "I know it's a little muddy right now-"
"No, no," Rae shook her head. "This former Inquisitor, was he blond?"
"Yes…" Kanan raised an eyebrow. "You know him?"
"Jalo Hikra, formerly known as Second Brother," Rae almost slammed her sandwich down in anger. "Yeah, I know the nerf-herder."
"How?" Athena questioned.
Rae sighed once more, casting her eyes down onto the table. "I wasn't always a Jedi Padawan. I used to be an Imperial cadette...that was until Project Harvester."
"I've heard of it," Kanan nodded. "An Imperial project to hunt down Force-sensitives."
"To make Inquisitors," she spat out the words like venom. "They forced me to train as an Inquisitor for the Empire..."
"Until..?" Athena asked.
"Until Second Brother took me as an Apprentice," she grumbled. "It was strange. He had already abandoned his post as Second Brother, but the Empire did a trade with him. His payment for a recent bounty would be an Apprentice...and it was me. The newest recruit. I was his Apprentice for about a year. Though, he didn't really teach me much. He wouldn't even let me out of my room during any of the bounty hunting gigs. I would stay in my cabin, every once and awhile get some lightsaber sparring with him, and eat. I did nothing!"
"Then what? How'd you met Master Unduli?" Kanan questioned.
"We were on a mission to hunt down a Jedi," Rae reminisced with a bitter-sweet tone in her voice. "I- I was sent to scout out the place she was supposedly staying at. She...she was so nice to me. She actually acted like I existed. Master Unduli took me as a Padawan and we ran off - to get away from Jalo…"
Kanan nodded, sensing no signs of mistruth from the kid. He wondered if she knew Luminara was dead. The sight of her corpse still haunted Kanan's mind to this day. That was a year ago now.
But, this kid was only on Earth for six months.
Strange.
"We're with the Rebellion," Kanan said. "Apparently this Jalo guy followed us around until he attacked our fleet and kidnapped me and her."
"Did he say why? Usually he kills his target on sight," Rae said. "It's strange for him to keep them alive. And how'd you escape?"
"Apparently something to do with Abeloth," Athena shrugged. "I knocked him out and we ran for it."
"Abeloth?" Rae questioned. "I thought she was dead."
"Jalo said that she's imprisoned in this planet, thus the reason no one can use the Force," Kanan paused. "You said you've been on this planet for at least six months, right? I thought this planet sucks the life out of Jedi who stay here too long."
"It has been, trust me," Rae sighed. "I've been vomiting almost everyday here. My body is getting weak here. But-" she looked to Athena. "For some reason, as soon as I sensed you, it was like all my energy was restored. I could sense things again."
"Yeah...I guess it's because I was born here, I'm immune to the weird Force things," Athena shrugged. "Also the reason why I got strange powers like the fire."
"Yeah! I saw that!" Rae smiled with bewilderment in her eyes. "I saw your show back there! At first, I thought you were just some magician. Then, I could sense you! You were the first thing I could sense in months! It was crazy!" she paused for a second, as if she had remembered something. "Oh...heh, I guess I should ask what your names are. I'm Rae, but I already said that, huh?"
"Athena," she nodded. "Call me Athena."
"Kanan," Kanan told.
"Rae," she smiled, chuckled, and rubbed the back of her neck. "Well, I guess I've said that already."
"Three times," Athena remarked.
"So...do you guys have a way of getting off this planet?"
"Well, we were hoping that our friends would get our signal through the Force," Kanan said. "So, we just have to wait and see when, and if, they can get here."
"Well, considering that the signal you sent was so strong it could reach into another galaxy, I'm going to guess if Jalo is still on this planet, he now knows where we are," Rae pointed out.
Athena and Kanan shared a concerned glance.
"Okay, so we need to at least get out of this town," Athena stated. "But how?"
"What about one of your transportation vehicles?" Kanan gestured to the road.
"We don't have nearly enough money for a car," Athena said. "Unless...you let me do another immoral thing?"
Kanan grumbled and growled under his breath. "Is there any other way to do it?"
"Unless you think we can fight Second Brother and not die," Athena said. "And, reminder - I've been in training for only two weeks and we only got a couple of hours of sleep last night in the woods."
"Alright, what's the immoral thing?" Kanan sighed.
"Steal," Athena chuckled, putting on the shades she had originally stolen for Kanan at CVS.
He was wide-eyed and patted his pockets, "How- when did you get those from me?"
"It's the art of deception," Athena shrugged. "I can get us a car like nothing."
Soon enough, Rae and Kanan found themselves standing on the sidewalk at the far end of a parking lot. Athena wore her black hoodie now, her hood up as she prowled around the parking lot. Being a young girl, most people didn't think twice about her possibly being a thief. It's what gave her an edge.
Rae looked up at Kanan.
"Soooo...she does this often?"
"I'm afraid so," Kanan sighed in defeat.
"Is she your Padawan?" Rae asked.
He shook his head, "No. She's got another Master. When we're back with the Rebels, you might meet them."
"Do you have a Padawan?"
He nodded, "Yeah. He's about your age. Ezra."
"Nice." she nodded and turned to the parking lot, watching as Athena disappeared out of sight. "So...is she your kid? She looks like you a little."
"No," Kanan answered. "Sister."
"Ah."
They both sucked at small talk.
Athena glanced up to see a woman beginning to leave her car. The parking lot was massive. Filled with hundreds of cars - people passing every once and awhile. The girl in the dark hoodie and even darker shadow walked past the woman. As the woman began to fiddle with her keys, about to put them in her purse, Athena dropped a dollar bill.
Athena stopped, as if noticing the bill and spoke to the woman. "Ma'am, I think you dropped that."
"Oh! Thanks, kid," the woman loosely placed the keys on top of her purse, Athena standing about two meters away. As the lady reached for the dollar bill, Athena reached within the Force.
Quickly, the keys flew into her hand and were shoved into her pocket. She turned and began to walk away. Athena made sure to walk around for a bit before going over to Rae and Kanan.
"Alright, I got the keys. Now, we wait at least twenty minutes after the lady enters a building before we take off with the car. I didn't want to hotwire because there's too many cameras and people around and I honestly don't want to deal with the cops."
"You know this stuff way too well," Kanan commented.
"I used to steal cars for my foster brother," Athena shrugged. "Paid well."
"Well, at least it'll get us out of here," Rae said.
Athena looked to Rae. "Hey, how about me and you switch shirts. That's how a lot of people get caught - by people recognizing what you're wearing. I'll give you my black t-shirt for now and I'll wear your dress. Kanan…" she sighed as she saw the male Jedi holding his armor in his arms. "Just put on the armor. You look even more ridiculous just holding it. Rae and I can switch clothes over there in that store's bathroom quick. You stay here and keep a watch on the car we're gonna steal. I saw the lady already go into a different store."
Kanan didn't even get to say anything before Athena quickly led Rae to a store's bathrooms. He sighed and began to put his armor back on his arm and his knee pads back on his knees.
After a couple minutes, Rae and Athena came back with their switched clothes. Rae with a black t-shirt and gray pants looking more Earth-fashionable and Athena wearing a white dress, her jeans and hoodie in her arms. She managed to put her hair back into a semi-decent ponytail.
The girl with blond hair then led them through the parking lot, instructing them to look as nonchalant as possible. They then unlocked the gray 2013 Chrysler 200, Athena getting in the driver seat.
"Wait, I thought Earthlings couldn't drive until they were 16?" Rae questioned, sitting in the back seat behind Athena.
"You don't exactly learn how to steal a car and not know how to drive," Athena stated and glanced over to Kanan in the passenger seat. "Buckle up."
"Where are we going? Do you even have a map?" Kanan questioned, bucking up - Rae doing the same thing.
"Nope," Athena shrugged. She threw the car in reverse and flew out of the parking spot. She was choppy and too hard on the break, but she at least got them on the road.
When they heard a ding coming from the middle console, they raised their eyebrows. Athena picked up the vibrating block, her face lighting up.
"Yes! A phone! Now we got a map!"
"Here, I can break into those things," Rae reached up to Athena. The girl handed it to her, but not before she swerved a little too much and got a few angry horns blasted at her.
"Eyes on the road!" Kanan snapped.
Athena rolled her eyes and turned back to driving. After a few moments, Rae cheered from the back seat.
"I got it! A brand new iPhone!" Rae smiled, continuing to type. "I'll just set it up and bring up a map."
"No way they can track that phone now, is there?" Athena questioned.
"Nope, I factory reset it," Rae said. "I gotta say though, I hate this writing system. Your alphabet on this planet is weird for Basic. Took me forever to learn it."
"Yeah…" Athena shrugged. "I could say the same thing about your guys' writing system. I'm still learning."
"So, where do we want to go?" Kanan questioned. "I imagine not in the direction of that military base."
"And not Area 51 either," Athena joked. She saw the confused stare of Kanan. "Oh, it's an Earthling thing. Don't worry about it. It's a joke."
As Rae held up a map on the phone, she looked around the car. "So...what do you want me to look up?"
"I don't know," Athena sighed. "We don't know where Jalo is or when the Ghost is coming. So, for now, nowhere."
"Great…" Kanan sarcastically remarked, rolling his eyes.
"Alright, if you have a better idea, speak up, damn!" Athena snapped, obviously irked. "I am doing my best over here! I got us a ride out of the forest! I got us some money! I got us a car! I got us a phone! Tell me one thing you've done!"
Kanan and Rae were in momentary stunned silence. Athena's burst of anger seemed so sudden.
"That's what I thought…" Athena grumbled. "Got the nerve to criticize me when I'm the only one who knows a damn thing about this planet."
"Alright, alright," Kanan said with a sigh and eye roll. "I'll keep my mouth shut."
One more chapter left! Yee haw!
Sooo...how many of you guys would actually read a rewrite of "Family by Heart"(the sequel to this)? Idk if I wanna write it or not.
