"Well, there they are. The Ninth Legion," the Doctor said, looking out at the field covered in bodies, camp fires still burning, "Great big pile of bodies. It's not always fun to be right. This wasn't long ago. Whatever did it is close by. We need to find Bill."

The Doctor and Nardole turned to see a line of native barbarian Scots, faces painted, with spears and shields. Nardole gasped.

"Don't move! Stay where you are!" the leader ordered.

The Doctor grabbed Nardole's hand.

Nardole yanked it away. "Oi!"

The Doctor grabbed at it again as the warrior villagers advanced. Nardole didn't let him have his hand and the Doctor kept reaching.

"Nardole, stop. I'm not- I'm just trying to fly us away!" He finally grabbed Nardole's wrist, but the spears were at their throats.

The Doctor threw Nardole's bag of popcorn onto the fire. "Listen, you are all very, very angry, but really you're just very scared. For now, would you mind awfully all just jumping out of your skins and allowing Nardole and I to escape in the confusion?"

"Who are you?" the girl asked threateningly.

"Let me explain."

The popcorn in the fire burst, startling the Picts.

The Doctor grabbed Nardole's hand and flew away, out of the hut and across the field. "Now that's how it's done, Nardole!"

"No. Listen to me! No, listen," the Doctor fretted, struggling to stay in control.

A large man hit the Doctor's head and he fell, stunned.

Bill quickly grabbed his pole lens. "You're wrong, Doctor. It's their destiny, not yours."

"Sorry. You're going nowhere," Nardole said as he tied the Doctor's wrists.

The Doctor began to wake up as Bill handed Kar the lens. "Bill! Bill, stop it!" He growled and managed to get his feet under him and started to float.

"Quickly! Quickly!" Bill urged.

"Soldiers of the Ninth, advance!" Lucius shouted.

The Doctor straightened in the air and started to fly toward them, but Nardole grabbed his arm.

"Come on!" Kar shouted.

The Doctor pulled Nardole with him, but it was too late. Kar followed two Legionnaires into the vortex and the musicians followed. Lucius looked back and smiled at Bill before disappearing into the vortex. The whole cave shook.

"What's that? What's happening?" Bill asked.

"Too many of them going through at once. This place is unstable," Nardole explained.

"We need to get out of here. Now!" Bill shouted.

They and the Picts who stayed behind ran as stones began to fall. The Doctor pulled away from Nardole and flew past everyone outside. Without his hands to keep his balance, he fell on the ground. Everyone made it out safely. Villagers covered the entrance with stones to keep anyone from trying to enter as Nardole untied the Doctor.

"I know you're inclined to bear a grudge, so just remember I know about ten percent of your secrets," Nardole said, "The dark secrets. And I'm the only one in the TARDIS who knows where the tea cakes are."

As soon as the Doctor was free, he pushed off the ground with his hands, looked at the sky, and with a hard flap of his arms shot into the sky. He flew higher and higher, incredibly fast, looking rapidly smaller and smaller.

"Where's he going?" Bill asked as she watched him level off and shoot away.

"He flies when he's angry. He'll be fine when he comes back," Nardole answered.

"The alternative is that this is for real, and it's time for us to become friends again," the Doctor said.

"Do you think so?" Missy asked. She reached out to him, but he stepped back.

He paused before taking her hands. Missy couldn't help but search for his flight aura, energy, power, or feelings through their physical touch, even though she knew it was wrong. She couldn't find it anyway.

"I don't know. That's the trouble with hope. It's hard to resist," the Doctor said. He let go and walked away.

Another tear, once foreign and now so familiar, dripped down Missy's cheek.
