A/n: New arc! This is a Yuki centered arc. It happens towards the end of Yuki's second year. It's kind of an important arc too. You'll see why. As usual, leave a favorite or review!
Sometime during Yuki's second year
Emerald eyes glared at the shivering figure in bed.
"And you wonder why I take your electronics from you every night."
Achoo!
Shiro sniffled while attempting, and failing, to glare at her lecturing sister. The night before, she had managed to convince her sister to let her keep playing for another 15 minutes while her sister went to bed early for the game today. Really, she had meant to go to bed, but somehow 10 PM turned into 3 AM of anime binge. Now she had a cold which had absolutely nothing to do with her lack of sleep.
"Yeah don't bother. I checked your history on your phone. You're going to stay here in bed. I'll make you some porridge before I leave and put water for you to drink on your bedside table." Yuki sighed before leaving the room to start the cooking. She still had a lot of time before the competition. After finishing up the porridge, she put it in a thermos and went back to Shiro's room.
"Here." She placed the thermos down next to the bottles of water. Grabbing the thermometer from the dresser, she walked over to the bed to check Shiro's temperature again. "Hmmm… still pretty high but not as bad as before. What did you catch, Shii?"
"Your personality." Shiro rasped out despite her sore throat.
Yuki gave her a deadpan stare before setting down more medication next to the food. "Okay, go to sleep and when you wake up, eat the food and take the medicine. Make sure you sip water while you're awake so you stay hydrated. I messaged mom, but she told me she's too busy to come home and dad is off on his trip to the States. Just stay in bed and keep your phone near but only for calling me if you need anything. Do not use it. I will know. Okay, go sleep now. Love you Shii-chan." Yuki instructed her before turning off the light and closing the door. She rushed over to her room to grab her gear and left for the competition.
She reached the gymnasium just as the boy's game reached its last set. So far, their middle school's boys had scored one set while the team they were versing took the second. Apparently, the other school had an incredible setter who had managed to make it past almost all the blocks in the second set.
"Hey, glad you made it on time Akumu." Sakura greeted, sweat dripping down her brow from the warm up. "Just join in. We'll be on soon so you don't have a ton of time."
"Hai." Yuki responded before running out onto the court with her teammates.
"Is Shiro going to be okay?" Emiko asked her as they practiced their spiking.
"Mm. She just has a cold." Yuki responded, not looking away from the ball as it bounced away. Hmm I think that set was a bit low. Yuki observed.
Yuki finished up the warm up with the girls. Their team put away the gear and started to do last minute preparation for the match. While they did that, Yuki peered out onto the court where the boys' match was on their last points.
"One touch!" A familiar voice cried with a smirk thrown over his shoulder at his team.
The chance ball was followed up with a clean receive that flew over to another familiar figure with a bored look on his face. Lifting his arms, he set the ball to the wing spiker on the left who then slammed it down onto the other team's court.
Yuki smiled at her two friends as they celebrated the point with their team. As if feeling her gaze, Kuroo glanced over at the preparation room door and spotted her. Catching his gaze, she smiled brightly and waved mouthing a 'nice one touch'. The bedhead grinned back at her before lining back up to get the final point for their team.
The other team wasn't as strong or well-rounded as their team, but for some reason they were only two points behind. If they scored those two points, it would end up as a deuce. Yuki watched as the server threw the ball up and hit it to the other side.
Unfortunately, it was a clean receive to the opposing side's setter. For some reason, Yuki felt like time slowed down as she watched a grey haired boy run up for the spike. It was obvious that he was the one who was going to spike, so it should be easy for their blockers to shut him down. Should.
Emerald eyes watched in fascination as the grinning grey haired boy jumped up and spiked the ball. A resounding boom was heard in the gym as the ball bypassed the blockers who were in line for a cross shot. The line shot spike bounced on the ground, almost pausing with the force it hit the floor, before shooting back into the air and off the court.
"HEY! HEY! HEY!" Yuki heard him exclaim in excitement of his successful spike.
"Nice kill, Bokuto-san!" His teammates complimented him in excitement. "One more point!"
Kuroo grimaced feeling the annoyance of a messed up block. He glanced back over at the spot he had seen his white haired friend and saw her standing with her mouth slightly open in awe while staring at their opponent's spiker. It was the same look he had caught on her when he occasionally caught her watching his block practice. For some reason, seeing her stare at this stranger with the same look created a tight feeling in his chest.
More than ever, he was determined to shut down the other team's spiker. Particularly the one who had captured the attention of one of his best friends. As the other team served, he stood at his spot in front of the net next to Kenma and watched as their team caught the receive. Unfortunately, the receive went too long and flew to the other side.
"Chance ball!" They cried, scrambling into formation to go for the deuce point.
Kuroo watched the ball carefully. He saw a flash of grey out of the corner of his eyes and chased after it. Hazel eyes met gold across the net. They jumped at the same time, the other blockers weren't going to make it on time after being fooled by the decoy. It was just them.
Bang!
A smirk. A surprised grimace. Then both boys were back on the floor staring at each other while ignoring the cheers happening around them.
Suddenly, the grey haired boy grinned at him, "That was a good block. I'm Bokuto, the ace."
"Heh," Kuroo dryly chuckled at the boy's friendliness despite his loss. "Name's Kuroo."
"Good game, Kuroo. I'll definitely beat you next time." Bokuto told him with a confident smile.
"You can try, hoot hoot." Kuroo shot back before walking back to his celebrating teammates who congratulated him on the amazing shut down. As he high fived his teammates, he glanced over again in search of a white haired girl but didn't see her. She probably had to get ready for her match. He reasoned with himself trying to figure out why he felt disappointed despite being the one who had won them the game.
Back in the room, a whistle sounded signaling the end of the match before them. Yuki and her teammates gathered together to line up on the court for their match against Hitaki Middle School.
"Thank you for the match." Both sides chanted.
