A Present for Sam
Overwhelmed by the store owner, Dean forgets he's a big bad Hunter and shyness takes over
as he responds to her sheer niceness, leading to a not altogether appropriate gift for Sam.

A bell jingled merrily when the store door opened. Stepping inside Dean instantly froze, staring in horror at the series of long corridors formed by the floor to ceiling shelves that confronted him. He'd half turned to leave when a cheerful voice foiled his escape.
"Why hello. Come on in my lovely."

He watched wide-eyed as the voice's owner, a sprightly old lady, scuttled towards him. She was a bundle of pink powdered face, sparkling snow white hair, bright blue eyes and pastel pink lips forming a sunny smile. Dressed in a cloud of soft rose petal pink, her movements were accompanied by the delicate scent of fresh spring lilacs and she exuded kindness and care like a much beloved Aunty. Spotting Dean's expression, her smile became a warm chuckle.
"Oh my darling child. You're like a young buck caught in car headlights!"

Dean didn't resist her gently taking his hand, patting it reassuringly, then wrapping his arm around her own and deftly steering him across to an old battered oak table, it's surface strewn with colourful clutter. Feeling a shyness he hadn't experienced in many years Dean obediently sat quietly on the stool she indicated while the old lady looked him over.
"Such a handsome young man! Are you lookinf for a book for yourself?"

Speaking at last, Dean was startled by how small and hesitant he sounded.
"Um...No ma'am...Um, Sam...My little brother...It's his birthday."
The woman clapped her hands delightedly.
"Ohhh! How wonderful! I just know we'll find something he'll adore!. What does your little brother like?"
"Um...Books?"

Mentally Dean kicked himself as, laughing merrily the woman glanced towards the shelves all bowing beneath the weight of the innumerable books they held.
"Well my lamb, this' definitely the right place! How about we try narrowing this down?...What sort of books does Sam like?"
Dean was dismayed to hear himself answer "Old ones...Mostly."
Pursing her lips, the old woman crossed her arms and considered Dean thoughtfully.
"Hmmmm...We might've got our work cut out here...Let's see...I know!...What subjects are his absolute favourites?"
Dean was silent for few moments thinking how best to answer, eventually replying,
"Ok, so...He likes...He likes books, um...About monsters."

Watching Dean walk away from the book-store the owner smiled fondly.
"What a splendid big brother! Sam's a very lucky young man."

Driving back to their motel Dean eventually gave up trying to develop a plausible explanation for presenting Sam with an illustrated copy of 'Beauty and the Beast' for his birthday.
