Hailey's POV
Friday came and went, and before I knew it, Saturday had arrived. We went over the plan one last time before getting into our cars and driving to the meetup spot.
"Any sign of Harris?" Burgess asked me.
I scanned the parking lot of the abandoned building but I couldn't see anything besides Jay and Kyle standing Jay's car.
"Nothing," I replied, "You?"
"Nothing."
Burgess picked up her radio and spoke into it.
"Do you guys see any sign of Harris?"
Rojas and Atwater had parked on the street that had the one entrance into the parking lot which meant if anyone was coming, they would know.
"Nope," We heard Atwater report back through the radio. "Nothing yet."
"He's late," Burgess said.
I looked at the time on my watch, "Only by ten minutes."
"So far," Burgess added and I chuckled.
"Right," I nodded, "So far."
Another ten minutes passed.
Then another ten minutes.
"Is he bailing out?" Burgess wondered aloud and I shrugged my shoulders, even though Burgess already knew there was no way I would know.
"Maybe," I whispered back.
Another ten minutes passed and Jay had called Harris but he didn't pick up.
"Should we call it?" I heard Ruzek ask through the radio. He was also parked somewhere in the shadows, hidden from view.
"Hold on, someone's heading towards you guys," Atwater's voice said from his end of the radio, "I can't make out any features but I don't think it's Harris."
I looked over at Burgess, "Maybe he got someone to come for him?"
"Could be a possibility," Burgess nodded in agreement.
It wasn't long before I could see what Atwater was talking about. It was definitely a person and it looked like they were wearing a sweater with the hood pulled over their head. Their head was lowered though, making it hard to see their face.
"The backpack," Burgess noted, "It could be where the drugs are."
"Should we move in?" Ruzek asked.
I squinted my eyes, trying to make out anything in the darkness, "Hold on. I don't think they're associated with Harris."
"What makes you say that?" Rojas asked.
"They're headed for inside the abandoned building," I replied through the radio just as the mystery person slipped through one of the doors that led into the abandoned factory. "If Harris sent someone to do this for him, wouldn't he tell them what to do?"
Burgess nodded, "Interesting."
"It's probably a homeless person," Ruzek said and we decided to settle on that.
For now.
Another solid half-hour passed but Harris still didn't show up. I was starting to doubt that he would. Finally, Voight called it in and Jay and Kyle got into the car before pulling out. Then strategically, we followed, making sure it didn't seem suspicious if Harris was watching, just to be sure this wasn't some sort of a bust, which it was supposed to be.
Back at the district, we were all wondering why Harris didn't show up. Jay called him a few times but he didn't pick up, no surprise there.
"Alright, everyone can go home," Voight ordered, "We'll deal with this in the morning."
Exhausted and frustrated, I packed up my stuff and headed back down and out of the district and to my car. Did Harris become too suspicious of Jay so he decided to bail out? Or maybe he somehow got caught up in something and forgot. I was thinking more towards the first option.
Once at home, Rojas and I ordered some takeout and ate in silence while the TV was on, though neither of us was watching it. After we ate, we cleaned up and Rojas said she was going to call it a night.
"I think I'm going to stay up a little bit longer," I replied, "I'll probably be right after you in a few minutes."
I stared at the TV, a bunch of thoughts running wild in my head. Why didn't Harris show up? Was Charlie still okay? This would be her third night out on the streets. If she was still alive that is. Where was she right now? How could a teenager just practically vanish? Even the police were having difficulty locating her.
Finally, I decided enough was enough and I turned off the TV before heading upstairs for bed.
"Did Harris ever get back to you?" Voight asked Jay the next morning.
Jay shook his head, "Nope. I didn't think he would."
"Try calling him again," Voight ordered and Jay nodded before heading off down the hall so that we could still work without having to be quiet.
"Has your CI managed to get in touch with Harris?" Voight asked Burgess.
Burgess shook her head, "No but I can get him to try."
"Do that," Voight nodded and Burgess hurried out with Ruzek to meet up with her CI.
"The rest of you just stay put until we find out why Harris bailed yesterday," Voight looked at all of us and we nodded.
Voight then went into his office, leaving us alone with each other in the bullpen while we waited for word on what to do. I took this time to get an update on Charlie's case and check in on Caroline.
Picking up my phone, I dialled Caroline's number and put the phone to my ear.
"Hello?"
"Hey," I said, "I just wanted to check-in. Any update yet?"
Caroline sighed, "No, it's like she just disappeared. An alert's been put out so hopefully, someone will spot her soon."
"Yeah," I agreed. "Well, call me if you get an update."
Caroline promised she would and I hung up.
I let out a big breath as I collapsed against the back of my chair.
"Anything new?" Rojas asked and I shook my head.
"It's like she just vanished off the face of the earth," I said. "Nobody's seen her, no cameras have spotted her, she's left no trace of anywhere she's been, it's ridiculous!"
Atwater raised his eyebrows, "They're still saying she ran away?"
"I know, I'm starting to wonder if she really ran away too," I said, skeptical about that, "If she did though, she's really good at keeping under the radar."
"Yeah," Atwater nodded, "Really good."
Rojas looked concerned, "So you're saying she was kidnapped?"
"Charlie's completely disappeared, but at the same time, Caroline said that her backpack, some of her clothes, her phone, and her backpack was missing from her room the morning she went missing. That makes it seem like she ran away," I weighed the two options.
Before the conversation could go on, Jay walked back into the room.
"I got in touch with Harris," He said, holding his phone up for some reason, "He wants to keep the deal. Tonight, same time, same place."
"Did he give you a reason for bailing out?" Rojas asked.
Jay shook his head, "Only that he got caught up in something else."
I didn't really want to know what that something else was. The important thing was that we were going to bust a drug dealer that sold to someone who ended up overdosing on those drugs.
"Alright," I nodded, "What's the plan?"
