Chapter Two: Night Terrors
A decent night's sleep was not something Leon was used to. He would get a few hours of sleep or sometimes not any. Leon's eyes open to the darkness of this bedroom. Funny how darkness is what dwells in his mind and how uninviting it feels. There was no escape from this hell. This was something Leon never asked for and still he does not know how to cope with such a problem. The more he pushed aside the subject the more he felt his mind being worn down. He let out a sigh before stepping out of bed and heading to the kitchen without bothering to turn on a light. The house had such an unsettling sense to it that made him block it from his mind. He grabbed a glass from the counter to fill up with water before returning back to the bedroom. Before he lays back down on the bed he finishes his water and places the glass on the dresser. The water refreshes his dry mouth and also his nerves. With a yawn he slips back into the covers.
Leon's arm reached over to grab onto the pillow beside him but he felt something else. He sat up on his elbow as his eyes adjusted in the darkness. All he could make out was the figure of a woman laying down beside him with her back turned. His heart pounded against his chest, questions running though his mind. Who was in bed with him? And how did they get into the house? He flipped on the switch to turn on the lamp on the bedside dresser and saw Rose peacefully asleep. Her platinum blonde hair draped her back as her body slowly moved as she breathed. Leon looked over the side of the bed to see their clothes spewed about the room. His hand rubbed against his face as the unanswered questions flooded his mind once again. How did Rose end up in his bed? All Leon could remember was going to the bar with Kevin and Ashley. They watched Rose perform before he stepped outside for a breather and he ended up driving Rose and Kevin back to his place. She gave Leon her number but anything after that Leon could not remember.
Not that he would complain about a beautiful woman being in his bed but he would still like to know what happened. He sighed to himself before retiring back into the bed. His arm slowly wrapped around Rose's sleeping body, trying his hardest not to wake her up. He moved his body closer toward her as he rested his head back onto his pillow. The strawberry scent of her shampoo made him smile. As his body began to relax, that's when he began to listen to her breathing. Rose's breathing did not sound natural, it sounded more harsh. That's when his heart began to pound against his chest as her body trembled against his.
'Rose...?' his voice was shaken but he still turned her body toward him. His heart felt like it was in his throat as he was greeted by a rotting smell. Rose's mouth was rotting of blood and flesh as a snarl escaped her throat. Her right hand grabbed onto my face while what was left of her other arm sprouted an ungodly sight of a large claw before her face collided with my throat.
Leon's scream echoed throughout the house as he sat up in bed. In His hand immediately grabbed onto his throat, feeling that it was still in one piece. The sweat rolled down his body as he stayed here breathing heavily. His hands trembled against the blanket as he tried to regain his composure. Why the hell does this keep happening? The fear he felt soon turned into complete anger before he threw the covers off. All he wanted was a decent night's sleep for once but every night was a nightmare. Leon stormed off to the bathroom to take a decent shower to make him cool down. He slammed the door open with a grunt before pushing the shower curtain aside to start the shower. The water rolled off his skin but it still felt as if his body was on fire from his rage.
Why did he have a nightmare like that? And why did it have to involve her?! His hand clenched into a fist and he slammed it against the title on the wall. The vibration of the impact rang against his hand down to his wrist. A loud roaring groan slipped through his clenched teeth.
Again.
His arm revealed back and his fist collided with the wall once more. Leon growled under his breath before his head rested against the wall. Water rolled off the top off of his head and down his back as he stood there. Slowly all noise around him began to fade away. All Leon could hear was the sound of his own heartbeat and the blood pumping in his veins. The pain from his knuckles began to become more prominent. Leon wiped what little blood he had on his hand with the water with a long sigh.
He hated this.
Once he turned his hand around he saw the writing on the palm of his hand. The ink from the numbers slowly erased from his hand and he felt a pit in his stomach. Before he went to bed last night he managed to write her phone number down in his phone but could not muster the courage to text her. His mind was whirling around with thoughts but he clenched his jaw to suppress them. Thoughts needed to be silenced or he would go mad. After sitting in the shower and finally bathed, he stepped out with a groan.
Such a coward.
I've faced many hurdles and monsters but I cannot text her back. I'm pathetic. Leon thought to himself while wrapping a towel around his waist.
With an empty mind and fresh body, Leon began to get ready for the day. He made his way back to his closet to pull out a black shirt and jeans. Throwing the clothes on the bed, he grabbed boxers and socks from the dresser with a frown. There was a loud bang on the front door that made Leon's body stiffen up.
His mind began to wonder. The knock continued as he made his way down the hallway.
Leon opened the door and Kevin gave him a smile. "Took you long enough."
"I was in the shower."
Kevin walked into the door with a chuckle and Leon shut the door behind him with a frown. "Why are you here?"
"To get your ass out of the house."
"I'm not really in the mood tonight. I had a rough night sleeping. I just want to stay home tonight." Leon scratched his head with a sigh.
"You and Rose hit it off last night, huh? I knew she would like your grumpy ass." Kevin snickered. "I saw her write her number down on your hand. Very smooth Leon."
Leon's face flushed. "Maybe she did."
"Ohhh, did you stay up all night texting her? Is that why you didn't get any sleep last night?" Kevin nudged his shoulder against Leon's.
"I didn't."
"Come on don't be shy. You can tell me." Kevin wagged his eyebrow.
"No. I'm serious. I didn't contact her last night. I did put her number in my phone but I haven't messaged her yet."
"Wait, so let me get this straight? She gave you her number, you have it logged into your cell phone and you haven't contacted her?" Kevin asked as he stared at Leon's contacts.
"You can say that." Leon sighed.
"What? Are you chicken or something?" Kevin raised an eyebrow. "Because you guys looked like you hit it off that night. It would be a shame if you let someone like her go."
"Why don't you try to 'get her' then?" Leon rolled his eyes.
Kevin froze for a moment and just let out a chuckle. "You think I haven't tried? I ain't her type. Plus she thinks I'm a tad overbearing..."
"I wonder why..." Leon scoffed.
"She doesn't normally give her number away either. That's the crazy part."
"Well, she seems to flirt with everyone like what she did with you before the concert." Leon snapped back. "Typical."
Once the words slipped out of Leon's mouth he instantly regretted them. Kevin's expression changed from a smile to quick disgusted glare. Never had Leon seen a smile leave Kevin's face like that. Not even once. It was actually terrifying to see emotion drain from another human's face like that. Leon couldn't look Kevin in the eye; he had to turn away from him.
"Excuse me?" Kevin stared at Leon dumbfounded. "Because she winked and blew a kiss at me before the concert? Leon, she's playful in nature. You are gonna hold that against her?"
"I don't know her personally, Kevin." Leon sighed. "How am I supposed to know?"
Kevin crossed his arms with a glare. "From how she grabbed onto your leg she must be really into you."
"How many other people did she do that before me?" The words would not stop. He didn't mean what he was saying, Stop you worthless piece of shit.
"You are a fucking moron." Kevin snapped.
Kevin, I didn't mean it please.
"You know what Leon? Get your ass in my car. We are going back to the bar. Rose is performing again and she asked me to bring you along again. She wanted you to hear her sing again because of last night."
"Wait, Kevin..." Leon protested but Kevin gave him a glare.
"Shut up. Get a coat and get in the fucking car," Kevin spin around on the heel of his boot before storming out the door.
Leon clenched his jaw in frustration. Today did not feel right. Everything that came out of his mouth he knew he didn't mean but it came out. He stormed into his closet to grab a black hoodie before gathering up his keys and wallet.
This doesn't feel right. Not at all.
{ * * * }
After a long silent drive to the bar, Leon looked down at his phone with a glare. Kevin parked his car closest to the entrance of the bar and got out without a word. Leon followed behind him with his hands in the pocket of his hoodie pocket. The bar seemed to be packed once again but Leon couldn't shake an uneasy feeling. Kevin ordered a few drinks while Leon sat there in silence. He handed him a beer before making his way into the crowd, completely ignoring Leon. However, Leon couldn't look Kevin in the face either. He was ashamed of how he reacted towards him. How he talked badly of Rose when his emotions got the better of him. How could he apologize for being such an asshole?
A man walked out on the stage along with Rose. The man was tall with long black hair and sleeve tattoos on his built arms. He looked to be in his mid twenties. Leon fidgeted with the glass of the bottle as he watched them. Rose had her platinum hair pulled back in a ponytail with her bangs framing her face. She wore her makeup in an alternative smokey eye and a bold red lip. She looked so happy with a huge smile on her face. Leon smiled to himself for a brief moment before realizing how stupid he must look.
Rose was standing close to the other man while they talked to Kevin. His expression was brooding as his arms crossed his chest. Leon clenched onto the beer glass for a second.
Deep down in Leon's gut filled with jealousy and he didn't know why. It was an intense amount of emotion. His fingers clenched onto his beer bottle. He took a drink with a grunt of disgust. Always hated the taste of alcohol but he needed a drink. His eyes wandered down toward the ground and he could feel the alcohol slowly slip down to his stomach. Unpleasant burning feeling but he took another drink reluctantly. A loud laugh came from the stage and his head shot back up to see Rose kneeling down to talk to Kevin. Her smile was so bright. Kevin's hand motioned toward his direction and her eyes scanned the room until their eyes met like that night before. She gave Leon a giddy smile and mouthed the words 'hello handsome'. Leon's face grew hot as he gave her an awkward smile back.
Rose stepped in front of the microphone with a smile, "Hello everyone. We are going to be singing for you all tonight. Hope you all enjoy it!"
The Lights began to dim.
"I wanted you to know I love the way you laugh. I want to hold you high and steal your pain away..." the man's voice was strong and deep as the mic caught his lips. His eyes locked on Rose's as he adjusted the mic on the stand. "I keep your photograph, and I know it serves me well. want to hold you high and steal your pain."
Leon watched the man's body language as he sang. The way he moved and his voice was so fluid. Rose kept her eyes closed as his voice echoed through the speakers. He moved around Rose as she swayed her body back and forth with their rhythm. Both voices began to blend with one another, "'Cause I'm broken when I'm lonesome and I don't feel right when you've gone away."
They both faced one another as they sang to each other. Leon's teeth clenched together as the man's hand pulled away from Rose. He turned to the crowd, "You've gone away..."
"I don't feel you here anymore..."
The music was soft but still prominent. Leon lifted himself up from the bar stool to adjust his shirt and that's when her voice finally hummed through the speakers. His stomach filled with butterflies as he looked up at her. "The worst is over now and we can breathe again."
Please.
I need this.
"I want to hold you high, and steal my pain away."
He moved closer toward the crowd of people and his heart began to race. All the different smells of cologne and perfume filled his senses. Quickly the smells mixed together almost making Leon sick. He rubbed the back of his neck as he pushed himself further into the crowd of people. The bright lights hit his sight and his entire body froze. He felt his body being lifted to another world, he could see all the bodies on the floor from Europe. The hordes of attackers came head on and there was no escape. He looked at the faces of all the villagers, all distorted and disgusted. I don't want this. He tried to step backwards but his legs did not budge.
Villagers screamed in Spanish at the top of their lungs as they chased after Leon. A loud pop came from his left and another on his right. Leon's heartbeat grew louder and faster. Blood stained himself and the wall around him. Walls around his suddenly became a small room. No, not now. Please. Leon breathed against his teeth. Leon slammed his fists on the walls as they began to close in all around him. Suffocating him and entrapping his very soul.
"I want to hold you high, and steal my pain away."
The voice was soft and angelic.
Leon spun around to see the wall a inch away from his face. His hands press as hard as he can against what felt like gravel. His nails cracked against the grit. More and more Leon fought against the gravel but it felt like he was alone. Trapped inside with nothing. The voice soothed against his ears again."There's so much left to learn, and no one left to fight."
LET ME OUT.
"I want to hold you high and steal your pain."
A strong hand grabbed onto Leon's shoulders and his entire body grew hot with panic. The more he struggled against the strangers grasp the move his body became weak.
Save me.
A light touch brushed against Leon's cheek. His eyes shot open to see himself in front of the stage and Rose kneeling down. Her soft hand against his face. The expression on her face was like an angel. Kevin's hands gripped on his shoulders securely, keeping him grounded. He caught his breath as her hand pulled away from his skin. Only making him yearn for her touch once more.
"Hey man are you okay?" Kevin whispered. "I was on the other side of the stage and I could see you in distress. I came right over."
"I..." Leon's breath was harsh. "I need to see her..."
Leon's body trembled after the shock. "I..."
Kevin's hand rubbed Leon's shoulders for a second before patting him on the back. "Let's get you some water."
"I want to stay here." Leon whispered. However, Leon's legs felt like jelly. He did not think he could move from where he was. "I didn't stay the last time."
"Leon, she will understand. Don't force yourself." Kevin insisted.
"I just..."
A warm liquid slid down Leon's cheek. Kevin's arm wrapped around Leon's shoulder and began to pull him out of the crowd. Leon tried to protest but the words would not come out. The tears only flowed harder and faster until he was a complete mess in Kevin's arms. He could feel peoples eyes bored into the back of him but the tears would not stop. Kevin guided him into the corner of the bar where they could have some privacy. Leon sat down at a seat and buried his hands into his face as he sobbed.
Pathetic.
"I will be right back, alright? I will get you a glass of water." Kevin pat Leon's shoulder before taking off.
It felt like eternity. Embarrassment was all he felt but he couldn't bring himself to stop. His fingers gripped into his bangs in frustration. The music hummed in the background but he could not hear the singing. Suddenly a pair of arms wrapped around Leon's shoulders. He jumped a bit in his seat but the arms kept him at bay. A soft cheek rested against his head while a hand rubbed his chest soothingly.
"Rose?"
She whispered into his ear. "Follow me backstage. I think you'll feel better back there away from people."
"I..."
Before he could say another word her hand grabs onto his and escorts him toward the stage. They take a right before the door and make their way to the backstage where the lighting was more dim. Leon's heart pounded harder into his eardrums. Rose turned back toward Leon with a smile. "Are you alright? I saw you from the stage and I was worried."
Leon stayed silent as he shook his head for a no. Rose's arms went to pull away from him and his heart skipped. His hands quickly pulled her arms back around his neck like before. She made a small gasp. "Leon?"
"I'm sorry..." his hand clenched onto the fabric of her coat. "Please just wait a little longer..."
Her hand caressed his cheek and Leon's heart fluttered at the softness of her touch. He let out a soft moan against his lips, Please don't leave me. Not yet.
She cooed in his ear. "I'm here for you. You don't have to tell me anything, okay?"
That's when Leon lost it completely. His body trembled as his crying turned into an aggressive sob. Her arms tightened around his neck as he cried. His legs felt weak and Rose held onto him as long as possible. The longer it took, the grateful Leon had become for her presence. Leon's hands quickly grabbed onto the sides of Rose's face and pulled her into his lips. His hands grabbed onto the back of her head and her waist. Pulling her body closer toward his. His lips moving with his and his heart racing like crazy. Rose muffled against his lips for a moment before she returned the kiss. Her arms tightened around his neck as the kiss intensified. Their tongue swirled with one another and Leon let out a groan against her soft lips. His heart raced in excitement for a moment.
He felt as if he couldn't control himself.
"Rose!" A male voice boomed across the room. "When you are done can we get on with the show?!"
Leon and Rose's lips pulled away from one another. "Yup. Be right there."
She rolled her eyes before turning her head toward the man's direction with a smile. The man walked off down the hallway and Rose giggled under her breath. She wiped her thumb against my lips to wipe away red lipstick that transferred from her lips.
"I'm sorry. I don't know what came over me." Leon was out of breath but managed to give her a sheepish smile. Rose's hand gently took Leon's in hers. He looked up at her with a confused expression but she only gave him a sincere smile. She gave his hand a gentle kiss before she let go.
"W-wait…" Leon whispered.
"Hmm?" Her eyes locked with his.
"I may sound forward but I need you tonight."Rose's face grew hot with a blush as her mouth opened. Leon quickly evaluated what he said in his head and took a deep breath. "W-wait, I mean can you stay a little longer? I would appreciate the company."
"Leon…"
"I…" Leon could not find the words and he got embarrassed.
"How about you stay backstage?" Her hands adjusted the hood of his jacket with a giggle. "And after the show we could get out of here?"
Leon's heart skipped a beat.
