Kara, a soon to be Olympic pairs figure skater, had almost made it to the Winter Olympics. Going to the Olympics had been kara's dream ever since she started watching the figure skaters on TV with her mother. She put her heart and soul into skating and it truly kept her world spinning. Kara, now 16 and having been with her partner Mon-El since she started pairs, thought there was no hope left for her after Mon-El had pulled his final stunt.
Mon-El grew to be a major partier as the pair got older, and he ended up ruining any chance the two had at going to the Olympics. Being the party animal that he was, he went out the night before competition and like always, he drank a little too much, making him miss the entire competition, and causing the pair to have to forfeit, and lose any chance they had at going to the Winter Olympics this year. After this Kara knew she needed a new partner, but who?
Lena Luthor was a beautiful skater that kara had seen practicing at the rink but she had never really spoken to her, besides the few times they had bumped into one another on the rink. To be honest, Kara was always a little nervous to talk to her because she thought she was pretty as she was always so kind to everyone and kara kind of had a crush on her. But it was more than that, Kara saw something in Lena that nobody saw. Lena's brother Lex was the best of the best among the single skaters and she was always looked over because of him. But Kara saw something in Lena that other people seemed to ignore. She knew that Lena was different. She had an elegance about her that was simply indescribable. Yet nobody ever saw her for her because of Lex. But for some reason which Kara could never seem to figure out, she saw Lena for who she was. She wasn't just "Lex's little sister," she was her own, beautiful, person.
Lex was a grade A pain in the ass. Everyone knew it and most skaters wanted absolutely nothing to do with him. Mostly because everyone was afraid of him. He and Lena both were coached by their mother Lillian Luthor, who would lie and cheat and pull whatever strings she had to, to get Lex in first and make sure that Lena was always one step behind him. Kara had noticed the way that Lillian screamed and yelled at Lena for hours upon hours everyday. But she had no right to do that because in Kara's eyes Lena was perfect. Then it struck her... Lena would be her partner.
Kara was bound and determined to have Lena as her partner, but she knew Lillian would never allow it. And even if she did allow it, how in the hell was little ole' Kara supposed to convince a girl she hardly knew to become her new partner. She knew was going to have to go straight to Lena with this, but how?
That night Eliza picked Kara up from the rink and they went straight home just like they did every night. But this night, this night was important, this night was the night that Kara would figure out a plan to convince Lena that she should come and skate with her. Kara didn't know why she felt like this was such a huge deal but, she did.
Kara knew that every morning Lena was on the ice an hour before Lillian arrived. Kara had always admired her for that. Lena was constantly torn down and told she could never live up to her brother but somehow she didn't let it upset her, instead, she used it to fuel her want to win. Lena was always the only one on the ice this early considering it was at 4:30 AM, and not even her brother was willing to be at the rink that early. So Kara decided it was worth it, this was her best chance so she would be at the rink and on the ice waiting for lena at 4:30 the next morning.
After a long night of worrying and trying to find every possible reason to convince Lena to give pairs a shot, it was 4 AM and time for her to get her stuff ready and leave. She got to the rink and noticed Lena hadn't arrived quite yet so she was happy that she had a few minutes to go over her plan and get warmed up.
Lena was about to skate out onto the rink when she noticed Kara. "What on earth would she be doing here?" Lena always paid very close attention to Kara and she noticed that Mon-El hadn't been at practice the past week. She tried to deny her curiosity but in the end she let it get the best of her and before she new it she was skating across the rink to ask Kara what had happened.
Kara quickly noticed Lena coming her way and immediately started panicking. This was not part of the plan. "Why is she coming to me!? I'm supposed to be going to her."
"Hey Kara, I've never seen you at the rink this early and I noticed that Mon-El hasn't been here all week and I just wanted to make sure you were doing okay."
Kara was at a loss for words at this point. Everything she had planned to say last night was out the window, but there was nothing she could do now.
"Oh hi Lena! Yeah Mon-El actually decided that partying was more important to him than skating with me and now because of him I have no chance at going to the olympics this year."
"Wow that's a lot. How are you holding up?"
"Well honestly, I'm furious with him for not even caring enough about neither himself nor me to not party the night before a competition, but i'm also mad at myself because I always knew he would let me down, in fact I was kind of used to it but I did nothing about it because I was afraid I wouldnt've be able to find another partner that could skate like he did on such short notice."
The words were flowing like a river right out of Kara's mouth and she couldn't stop them. For some reason Lena was so easy to confide in and Kara felt like an open book with her. The two barely knew each other but Kara felt like she'd known Lena all her life.
"Kara you can't for one second think that you are responsible for any of this. You are an amazing skater and anyone would be lucky to skate with you. If Mon-El couldn't see that then he had no business skating with you because you are better than any skater i've ever met. Hell, i'd skate with you if I could."
Kara stood in front of Lena with her mouth wide open. "Did Lena seriously just say that she would skate with me? No way. I didn't even have to do anything."
After about a minute of Kara standing there just staring at Lena, she was so confused. Did she say something offensive? "Did Kara still care about mon-el even after being the asshole that he is?"
"umm Kara?"
"yeah yeah i'm sorry it's just... you'd skate with me?"
"oh one hundred percent. i'd do it in a heart beat. If i'm being honest, I always wanted to be a pair skater but Lillian would never allow that. She says that depending on someone else is weak and shows that you need someone else to help you get by."
"you're kidding right?"
"excuse me?"
"Okay okay, I know this is going to sound crazy and like i'm out of my mind but... do you want to be my new partner!?"
"Now it was Lena's turn to stare at kara with her mouth hanging open. She couldn't believe Kara wanted HER to be her partner. Kara could have any partner she wanted and she chose Lena. A girl. Whose never pair skated. Ever.
"are you serious Kara...?"
"oh i've never been more sure of something in my life. I know it would probably be hard with Lillian and all, but actually the whole reason i'm on the ice this early is because i knew you'd be here and I wanted to ask you if you would even consider being my new partner."
"Well... Lillian wouldn't be a problem, she's only my coach. She doesn't pay for any of my stuff, my father does. He used to be a pair skater so i'm sure he'd be thrilled. But Kara i've never pair skated in my life. I wouldn't even know where to start."
"Lena if i didn't think that you could do this, I would not have woken up at 4 AM just to beat you to the ice so that I could ask you this. I honestly believe that we would be an astounding team. And so what if you've never pair skated, you'll have me and the best coach in the galaxy to learn from."
"Well Kara Danvers, I guess you've got yourself a new partner!"
After talking for a bit and Kara explaining all the things the pair would need to get done in order to get ready for the upcoming competition, the two girls took the rest of the day to just hang out and get to know each other. They spent the whole day walking around town and they didn't even realize how long they'd been gone until Kara got a text from Eliza saying she was about to leave to come and pick her up.
"Oh shit Lena..."
"um Kara is everything okay?"
"Welllll... not exactly. You see, Eliza picks me up every day at 9:00..."
"Yeah so?"
"So it's 8:45 and we are still thirty minutes away from the rink..."
"Oh don't worry about it, just tell Eliza you're staying with me tonight. Would she be cool with that? Or I mean if you don't want to it okay but I can still give you a ride home if you wanted."
"Actually i'd love to stay with you tonight! Alex has been a real pain in the ass recently because some new girl named Sam joined the hockey team and apparently she's really good. But I don't have any of my stuff with me, it's all still at the rink."
"No problem you can just sleep in my clothes and I have a spare toothbrush you can use."
"Okay cool i'll tell Eliza and make sure she's good with it and then we can head that way"
Lena always wished she had a mom like Eliza. She knew she should be grateful that she had a mother at all, even if it was one as evil as Lillian. At least she had Lionel. Even when all odds were against her or Lex was on one of his pre-competition war paths, Lionel was always there for her. But for some reason, she felt like now even only knowing Kara for one day, she had a new person she could trust. It wasn't like her to be so trusting and open minded around new people but Kara, she was different, she was special.
"Eliza said it's cool if I stay with you tonight so we're good to go. But i'm kinda hungry so could we stop and get some food? There's this amazing Chinese place around the block if you want. It's my favorite and they have the GREATEST potstickers ever!"
"haha of course we can get some food. I'm actually a little hungry myself"
"I'm sorry, did you just say... a little? We haven't eaten all day. There is no way you're just a little hungry."
"Well Lillian keeps me on this special diet that is only greens and meat because she says if i'm going to be a successful skater, then I need to look the part and being chubby isn't the look for the part."
"Lena that's crazy talk. There isn't an ounce of chub on you. And besides Lillian isn't your coach anymore so you're allowed to eat what you want and be as hungry as you want!"
"Well in that case... LETS EAT AS MANY POTSTICKERS AS WE CAN!!!!"
"Lena Luthor I believe we are going to be the bestest of best friends!"
Kara couldn't quite place what she felt when she said the two of them would be best friends. It didn't necessarily feel wrong, but it didn't really feel right either. She just kind of assumed it was probably because they just met. But the one thing she knew for sure, was that she was so excited for their sleepover!
"Oh my Rao i'm so stuffed"
"Rao?"
"Oh yeah sorry it's kind of habit to say Rao. Basically when Alex and I were younger I would say anything she said because I thought she was cool and so I would do whatever and say whatever she did because I wanted to be cool too. So when her and Eliza caught onto that, Alex started saying all these weird things and I would just copy her and sound stupid. Nothing else really stuck but Rao did and now it's just kind of a habit"
"Awh that's adorable! I wish Lex and I were close like that. The best memories I have with him are telling him when I learned a new skill before he did just so I could laugh at the look on his face."
"Yeah I've always known me and Alex have a special bond and I really am lucky to have her. But hey now that we are partners i'm sure you'll get to know her better and I think you guys would actually get along great!"
"Really? That would be so amazing. Alex seems so nice and big sisterly."
"Yeah she's the greatest!"
Lena was close with Lex when she was first adopted. Lex had broken his ankle and the Louthor's adopted her just before Lex was able to start skating again. Once he started skating again he didn't have time for any distractions so the two quickly grew apart. But it was in the past and she knew she was onto better things now.
"So Lillian and Lex are out of town all week because Lex decided at the last minute he wanted to participate in a showcase in National City so we have the Manor to ourselves."
"Cool! So are they out of town often?"
"Yeah, since Lex won Nationals and has already been placed on Team USA, he's been getting invited to all of these showcase events and getting asked to meet with a bunch of different people and companies for endorsements."
"Wow you must get so lonely in this huge mansion all by yourself.."
"Sometimes I do, but sometimes it's nice not having anyone constantly breathing down my neck"
Kara couldn't imagine having to deal with Lillian and Lex and their insanely high standards all the time. She truly never realized how hard things must've been for Lena when she was younger.
"So it's already 11:00 we should probably go to bed soon"
"Yeah totally. What time do you wanna be at the rink tomorrow? I usually get there around six but since we are new partners and are probably going to need all the time we can get I was thinking like five?"
"Five sounds good to me. It's gonna be nice to sleep in for once!"
"Um yeah... sleep in"
"Oh and do you mind if I take a shower real quick?"
"Yeah sure go ahead. The towels are in the closet in the bathroom and I already set out some spare clothes for you."
"Thanks Lee"
"Um.. Lee?"
"Oh uh yeah.. it's just a nickname i thought of earlier. Oh Rao you don't like it. I'm sorry. I didn't want to make things awkward i'm just so excited to have a new best friend and it's all so new and... and i'm rambling. I seem to do that sometimes when I get nervous and sometimes the best thing to do is just tell me to..."
"Kara, I love it"
"oh, you do?"
"Yeah I really do. I've never had a best friend who spends the night and gives me nicknames. I love it and I don't want you to change who you are in order to please me. I like you just the way you are"
"Oh.. well okay then. Um i'll just be a few minutes then"
"Don't worry take your time"
Lena was on cloud nine right now. She had a new best friend that gave her nicknames and slept over at her house and actually wanted to be her friend because she liked who she was as a person and she wasn't just using her to try and get something from Lex or her family name.
Kara knew from the start that Lena was special and she knew that the two of them were going to be unstoppable as partners. But what she didn't know, was that the two of them would be unstoppable as best friends as well. In fact it was the very last thing she expected.
As Kara was finishing up her shower and getting dressed, she heard something make a loud thud in the bedroom. Her first instinct was to run out and see what happened so she quickly threw on the sports bra laying on the vanity and ran out of the bathroom.
"Lena... oh my Rao are you okay??? What the heck happened?"
"I just fell Kara it's okay. I'm fine"
Except what Lena couldn't see is that when she fell she hit her head on the table and had a nasty gash on her forehead.
"Lena you're not fine. You have a huge cut in your forehead and it's bleeding pretty bad. Do you have a first aid kit or anything I can use to clean this up?"
"Um I have some hydrogen peroxide in the cabinet in the bathroom and some cotton pads and band-aids"
"Okay that will have to do."
Kara went to go get the stuff to clean up Lena's cut and called back "How'd you fall anyways?"
"Well I was going to turn the light off so we could get ready to go to bed because I heard the shower cut off, but I forgot I took my shoes off by the door and I kinda tripped... oh god that's so embarrassing..."
Meanwhile Kara cleaning Lena's cut, she is dying of laughter, but Lena did not think it was funny one bit.
"Alright alright, you're all cleaned up. Now, this time I'll turn out the light and you warn me about any rogue shoes"
"Not funny Kara"
"ahahahahahah maybe just a little bit"
"whatever just come on"
So Kara climbed into bed next to Lena and just like that Kara was sound asleep.
Lena was trying to go to sleep but she just couldn't turn off her brain. She was too high strung from what had just happened and her head was hurting on top of all of it. But then she felt an arm wrap around her torso. Of course Kara was asleep... but Lena couldn't say she disliked the affection. Even if Kara didn't know she was showing any. Eventually Lena got sleepy and didn't want to move because regardless of what Lillian had always told her, it was nice to be there in that bed with Kara and maybe she did need someone after all. And with that last thought Lena was sleeping too.
