In this chapter I'm gonna go over who Chang is and why he's doing what he's doing. Again I don't own ATLA or most of the characters in this story. Enjoy!
4 Years Ago in the Northern Water Tribe
Chang was in his home in the Northern Water Tribe when he saw the sky turn red. He knew there was a battle occurring today but he chose to not join the others to fight it.He had never been one for liking violence. He always preferred use his waterbending for meditating. He had been able to enter the Spirit World a few times in the past, but it was never for very long.
As he watched the sky go from red to complete and utter darkness he knew something must have happened to the moon spirit.
He had learned a lot about the moon and ocean spirit that could be found in the Spirit Oasis. And although he never got the pleasure to actually see them, he was fascinated by it.
He was angry that the Avatar had allowed this to happen. After being gone for 100 years and letting people everywhere be killed in this war, he finally returns and now the moon spirit is dead.
Chang's family used to live in the Southern Watertribe but when his father was taken prisoner by the Fire Nation for being a waterbender, they decided to relocate. Chang's father was taken before he even got a chance to teach him how to be a waterbender. He never got the opportunity to be proud of him. And that angered Chang.
Part of the reason he tries to enter the Spirit World so much is for the opportunity of maybe seeing his father again. But that never happened.
Later when Chang found out that Princess Yue had to sacrifice herself to bring the moon spirit back to life, he was furious. The avatar was the one who should've made a sacrifice or at least try harder to protect the moon spirits in the first place. They just lost their princess and only heir the chief had. All because of the avatar.
1 Year Later
The avatar had ended the 100 year war. Him and the new firelord were now working together to rebuild the world. But to Chang that didn't change the fact that thousands of people died because of the avatar's mistakes.
He hated the avatar for being responsible for all of that. He blamed him for his father's death, for having to leave his home, and for having to grow up in the middle of a war.
Since the events from the Northern Watertribe, Chang wanted to find a way to get rid of the avatar. He began to do research all over the world. He trained harder than ever, and was over his conflicted feelings of using his waterbending towards violence.
It was a dark night and he was sitting on a high cliff that looked down into the ocean. There was a full moon out and Chang meditated to enter into the Spirit World. He had now mastered entering the Spirit World after much practice.
When he finally did, he began to walk through it. He saw spirits of all sorts everywhere he turned. They all seemed so happy and at peace. Chang needed to find spirits that could help him with his task. He couldn't ask around however, a lot of these spirits were friends with the one he was trying to take down. If he said anything they might go and warn him.
After hours of roaming through the spirit world he came to a place that could only best be described as a dark forest. Chang was just about to give up when he felt something call out his name. "Who's there?" he asked. When no response was heard he began walking again. Then he heard the voice once more. "Show yourself!" he commanded.
"No need to be frightened," a deep voice answered. Then out of the shadows a dark spirit arose, the spirit was about 9 feet tall and had 6 claws. It's eyes were pure red but when they got near you they would turn black. It was something straight out of a nightmare. "I come in peace." The dark spirit announced with an evil grin on his monstrous face.
"I understand you're looking for a way to take down the avatar." The dark spirit said as he came closer to Chang. "You heard right," Chang responded. "But that isn't all you desire, now is it?"
"I have read stories about dark spirits being able to bring someone back to life," Chang said. "Ah well you're in luck, those 'dark spirits' are me," the spirit announced. "I am Seth, the dark spirit of souls. And yes technically I can bring a soul back to life. But not in the body it once held. The spirits of people roam through this entire place. I can make those spirits go back into the physical world. However it comes at a price."
"What is that price?" Chang asked. "You see in order for a soul to leave, another must take it's place. The body that held that soul would now take in the soul that left." The spirit explained
"Well that isn't too hard I'll go get you a soul and it's body right now," Chang said and was about to turn the other way when he was stopped by the dark spirit. "Not so fast. You see I don't do these deals with just anyone. I don't want just a random soul, I want the avatar's soul. I want his spirit. And as I heard before, you also want to take him down. So it's a win-win for all of us."
Chang then had an evil grin on his face, "What do you need me to do?"
