Ok, so I want you guys to know that that this story is inspired by the Avatar's Love but it's not the same story. Anyways some of y'all have asked wether Aang and Katara will end up together at the end. All I have to say is to keep reading to find out. Also this is going to be a long chapter but I suggest you read all of it. Again I don't own ATLA or most of the characters in this story. Enjoy!
Aang and Katara were traveling around the air temples and checking up on the air acolytes. They were now at the Southern Air Temple. This temple was specifically hard on Aang, since it was were he grew up.
Aang and Katara were walking around and they came to the hall of archives. It contained many books and scrolls filled with stories of previous airbenders. Katara walked around when one scroll in particular caught her eye.
She grabbed the scroll and looked at the seal which read "Liang". She opened up the scroll and looked at image of a beautiful Air Nomad.
"Avatar Liang," Aang said as he stood beside her. "She's my favorite Avatar. Monk Gyatso told me stories of many. But she stood out the most to me. She brought on a great era of peace in the world." Aang talked.
"She's beautiful." Katara said with astonishment.
"Yeah, she was also known for her beauty. Apparently everyone wanted to be with her. But she ended up falling in love her waterbending master, a man named Khan. She also created many airbending and waterbending moves." He went on.
"Sounds amazing. A lot like you and me don't you think?" Katara asked with a raised eyebrow.
"Oh yeah! I never taught about that." He said and then kissed her softly on the cheek. Katara blushed and smiled softly as she kept reading about Avatar Liang.
Present Day (3 months since Aang's disappearance)
Katara awoke from another nightmare. It was the same thing again. Dark forest, shadows, freaky spirits, and most importantly Aang.
Last night she had that huge argument with Zuko and left her feeling so empty inside. She had to admit that Zuko had it really bad. But it made her mad that he tried to compare it when he shouldn't.
She walked to the dining hall to grab something to eat. When she came in however Toph looked up with a shocked look on her face.
Katara didn't catch that though. She looked at all the food on the table but didn't feel like eating any of it. She just kept making weird faces at it.
"Katara will you just sit down and eat your food," Sokka said. She looked up at him, "It's just. I don't want to be rude but I feel like if I eat any of this I'll throw up. Again." She said with a shy tone.
"Okay? Then what do you want to eat?" Sokka asked with a raised eyebrow. Katara put her hand on her chin and taught about it for a moment. "Ooh! I really want some egg custard!" She said out loud with a drooling face just thinking of the dish.
"I'll tell the cook," Iroh said as he got up to go to the kitchen.
Sokka looked at his sister and then remembered his egg custard was Aang's favorite meal. Is he corrected himself. He then looked over and saw a tear fall from Toph's face.
"Toph? What's wrong?" Toph turned her head away from him quickly, "Oh nothing. Just, um allergies."
After breakfast Katara went to the stables were Appa was. She brushed her face with his hair and it reminded her of Aang.
"Katara," she jumped at the sound of her name and turned around to find Toph. "Jeez Toph! You scared me."
"Sorry, but I need to talk to you," Katara knew that this couldn't be good given the tone in Toph's voice.
"What is it?" Katara nervously asked.
"Man I don't even know how to say this. Like how the hell do you tell this to someone. And I have a feeling that you might cry and you know me I'm not good with ya know feelings," Toph said.
"Toph just get to the point, you're scaring me."
"Okay, here it goes. You know how I can see through my earthbending right?" Toph asked. "Yeah..."
"Well and you know how I can also feel things, for example... heartbeats." Toph let out. "Where are you going with this?" Katara asked in confusion.
"Well today when you walked in the dining hall, I felt... two heartbeats from you." Toph went on. Katara raised an eyebrow, "What do you mean two heartbe-" in that moment she realized exactly what Toph meant. She placed her hand over her mouth and began to think back.
Taught about how much she had been throwing up, how hungry she was lately, the weird cravings. She taught about the last time she had her menstrual cycle. This whole time, she had been carrying a baby inside of her. And she hasn't even realized because she was so caught up with thinking of Aang.
"Oh my god Toph!" Katara yelled. "How did I not realize this sooner? I mean I'm like an expert when it comes to babies, I've delivered dozens! How did I not notice that I'm pregnant! I've just been so busy with worrying over Aang!" suddenly her eyes widened even more. "Oh my god! Aang! He's the father to my baby! And he's not even here! What am I supposed to do!" she began to rub her belly and tears flew down her face.
Katara's breathing became heavier, "Toph I can't- I can't breat- I can't breathe." Katara then collapsed to the ground. "Katara!" Toph yelled out.
Katara awoke suddenly and found herself in bed again. She turned and found Toph and Sokka next to her bed. It seemed like they fell asleep hugging each other.
"Sokka?" Katara said loudly enough to wake him up. "Katara! You're awake, how are you doing?" he got out from under Toph softly so that she wouldn't wake up yet and came close to Katara.
"I'm pregnant," she let out with tears filling her voice. "I know," he said with a low voice.
Katara began to cry more, "Sokka, I think I'm carrying a dead man's baby." Sokka watched as the tears fell down from her eyes. This whole time she was the one talking about Aang not being dead, how they had to have hope that he was still alive. But now seeing her be the one who's realistic, that might've hit him the most.
"Don't think of it that way, okay? We don't know that, Aang could be alive." Sokka said Katara looked up to her brother and anger filled her face.
"Well then where is he? Cause I don't see him! I look around and he is nowhere to be found! People are searching for him in all corners of the world and nothing! He left me! Even if he didn't mean to, he left me! And now I'm going to have to have this baby alone!" Katara yelled out in anger but with tears still flowing.
At this point Toph awoke from her sleep. "Katara don't say that! Even if Aang isn't here, I am." Sokka told her.
"I'm here too," Toph said as she stood beside Sokka.
"And so am I," a voice coming from the door spoke. They all turned around and found Zuko.
Even after all that she was going through, Katara managed to show a smile to her friends support. They all then hugged in a big group hug around Katara.
5 months since Aang's disappearance
Katara sat in the main patio of the Fire Nation Palace, she just stared into nothingness. She felt as if she was dead inside.
Since she was a little girl she always fantasized about being pregnant. How perfect everything would be, being married with a baby on the way. It was supposed to be the best feeling in the world. She was supposed to be glowing.
But she couldn't be farther away from that feeling. She hated this, she just hated the position she was in. All she wanted more than anything is being comforted by him, the love of her life. Even if he somehow never returned. Aang would always be the love of her life. He was perfect, he was everything to her. No matter what happened nothing would ever change that.
Katara had a part of Aang now with her. Something that no one would ever take away from her. And she would make sure of that for as long as she lived. But she wanted to share that with him. She wanted to feel what she was supposed to feel when a woman is carrying a life inside of them.
She rubbed her stomach to in a way to try to comfort her baby but also comfort herself.
She was so tired of waiting around like an idiot. She was so done with having people all over the world looking for him but finding nothing.
She then got up and went to her room with a determined look on her face. She went through her closet and got her water tribe outfit that she hadn't worn since they got to the Fire Nation.
She changed into her outfit (which she had to adjust a little to fit her belly) and grabbed her wineskin. She went over to the mirror, brushed her messy hair and did her signature hair loops. Katara went out the door and walked through the hallways of the palace.
She looked around to make sure no one saw her. She turned around to see if anyone was behind her and when she turned back she jumped to find Zuko standing in front of her. "Ah!" Katara let out. She then let out a deep sigh. "Zuko! Hey! How's it going?" she said with a happy tone trying to stall from the fact she was trying to get out of the palace.
"Going somewhere?" Zuko asked with a grin. "Nope!" she replied with wide eyes and big fake smile. "Right! and the outfit you haven't worn in months? Oh and the.. wineskin you don't wear unless you think you're gonna use your waterbending against someone?" he confronted.
Katara gave him an annoyed look and frowned. "Fine! You caught me, I'm going to find Aang okay!"
"Katara, there are people looking for him everywhere you don't need to go anywhere," he replied.
"Well they don't seem to be finding anything! And honestly they don't have the same urgency I do! Zuko I can't just sit around and do nothing! I can't, I won't have this baby without Aang! So if I have to go out and turn over every rock until I find him, I will do so!" she replied with a determined look on her face and proceeded to walk down the hall towards the exit.
"What if you loose the baby?" Zuko said facing away from Katara. She stopped at those words. "What happens if while you're trying to look for him, you get badly hurt and you loose the one thing you have left of him." Katara's face fell and she turned to meet Zuko's eyes.
Zuko began to walk towards her. "Katara, I understand that you want to find Aang. But if you also loose this baby you won't be able to live with yourself." Katara looked down with a frown.
"Let's make a deal, you stay here in the Fire Nation Palace where you will be safe until you have the baby. After that you're free to look for Aang for as long and for as hard as you like. And if he's found before the baby is born, then great! And if he's not then too bad but at least you and the baby will be safe." He suggested and looked for a response in her face.
"Deal?" he asked.
"Deal," she replied with a dry voice.
8 and a half months since Aang's disappearance
Katara was placed down on a bed in a room in the Fire Nation Palace. Her breathing was heavy and her contractions were strong. "Gran Gran it hurts!" she cried out. "I know my little waterbender, but you're strong you can do this!"
A couple of waterbender healers came in and brought water with them. One of them placed a wet towel on Katara'a forehead to help soothe her.
"Ahh!" Katara let out with the pain she was going through.
Outside of the room sat Sokka, Toph and Zuko. They all made weird faces to Katara's cries.
"Okay, I'm kind of reconsidering wether I want to have kids or not," Toph said with an awkward grin.
"I think I'll understand if you don't want to," Sokka replied.
"Do you think we should go in there to help?" Zuko asked.
"From what I've gathered she's going to be in labor for hours. There's not anything we can do in there, so just sit down and stop worrying so much." Sokka told him.
About 4 hours later
"Katara come on you're 10 centimeters dilated, just try and push." One of the healers told her.
Katara kept pushing but she was exhausted at this point.
"I can't. I can't do it Gran Gran!" she let out.
"Yes, you can just push a little more, my darling," she comforted.
Katara shook her head 'no' and tears came flowing from her eyes. "I want Aang!" she cried.
"Grab Gran, please I need him here!" Katara cried to her grandmother. Her grandmother looked at her with sad eyes at her words. She couldn't even begin to imagine what she was going through.
"I want my mom! Please, Gran Gran I want my mommy!" Katara pleaded with sobs filling up her voice.
"Katara look at me," Kanna said. Katara looked down and kept crying. "Look at me!" She finally looked up to meet her gaze.
"I know it's hard, but you have to be strong. If not for you then do it for this baby!" Kanna urged.
Katara then shook her head in determination and held her grandmother's hand tight and pushed with all she had in her. She closed her eyes shut and then opened them to the cry of a small baby.
Katara smiled and chuckled at her baby's voice. One of the healers cleaned the baby up and showed it to Katara. "Congratulations, Lady Katara. You have a beautiful baby girl."
Katara held her baby daughter in her arms and gently caressed her cheek. "She's perfect," she said softly with a smile.
At this point Sokka, Toph and Zuko came in. Katara looked up and showed them all the baby.
"She's so, squishy-looking." Sokka commented.
"Well I can't see her but she's not making much noise so I like this baby." Toph joked.
"She's beautiful, Katara." Zuko finally commented.
Katara smiled and looked down at her baby girl. She examined every inch of her face. "She looks just like him," she said softly. "I can see him in her." she said with a voice that was gasping for air.
They all looked at the abby and could definitely see the resemblance. "So what are you gonna name her?" Sokka asked. Katara looked up to her brother and then looked down again at her baby. "Liang."
"Her name is Liang." Katara let a few tears drop and for the first time in months, those tears contained some joy in them.
