Chapter 002

She knew that death wouldn't greet her in this place, this was just a temporary plane of existence. She floated there, suspended in the place without gravity and full of emptiness. As far as she could see there was nothing around her, she was simply alone. She allowed herself this time, to try to understand what had gone wrong. Of course, it was Naruto's fault that things had ended up like this, but she wouldn't blame him. He didn't know what they were doing, it was a fault on their behalf. If Naruto hadn't interrupted their little experiment then they would have been successful. They would have been able to achieve the results that they had been working so hard for. However, that was not the case and luck had not been on their side. She pressed her lips together in a line as she thought about what they could have done better but that wouldn't help her now.

Although it felt like she was simply floating in this void, she knew that she was traveling at a fast pace. Her hair whipped around her face as she stared up at the emptiness that surrounded her. It wasn't too much longer before a bright light filled her vision, causing her to wince and close her eyes. A strangled gasp of air left her body as her body was forced into the ground, bouncing a few feet from the impact. Tumbling and rolling, she let out a strangled cry as her back slammed into something hard. Her body stopped moving, as she laid in a crumpled heap on the ground. Taking a few moments to regain her bearings, she cautiously reached her out her hands, fingers digging into the solid ground beneath her. Another moan of pain left her as she lifted up her head, blinking blearily at the objects around her. Inhaling, she could smell the fresh scent of pine and cedar bark fill her nose. She was in the woods, that much she knew. She continued to blink furiously, trying to focus her vision before she was graced with the site of large trees surrounding her. Pushing herself up to rest on her elbows, her eyes scanned the area, she could feel extremely faint Chakra signatures.

They were only faint in this area but she recognized them, they were very familiar to her. A curse left her mouth as she cradled her head in her hands and began to think of what she was supposed to do. How was she supposed to go back to this? Of course, she could try to explain how she came to be here but the question was would they believe her? Would they give her the chance to speak? This was, after all, a different time and place. There was a part of her that truly wanted to celebrate. They had succeeded with the Technique, not only had they opened up a temporary limbo in place and time but she had been successfully placed back in time, body completely intact. Of course, she wasn't completely sure how it was that she managed to return to this place but she would have the time to figure it out. That is, if they allowed her to live for that long.

Of all times, she had been placed back with the Warring States Era. Perhaps it was because she had been thinking about a certain person, prior to their experiment, but nonetheless, she was here. Pulling herself to a standing position, she glanced around her surroundings. It was all vaguely familiar yet different at the same time. The trees still held that familiar scent to them and if anything, she could feel a large amount of Chakra residing in the distance. She knew, without a doubt, that she was close to the newly founded Konoha. Her mouth ran dry, she would be seeing not only the Uchiha but both Senju prodigies as well. She trembled at the thought, knowing that they could easily end her, should they see fit. From what she understood from History, the First Hokage was a benevolent soul. The one she would have to worry about was his brother and the Second Hokage. A frown tugged at her lips, she knew that it would probably do a few different ways. Thanks to the years of handling and dealing with her Nara teammate, she could come up with a few ways to go about speaking with them. She glanced down at her clothing, she knew that she would easily set off red flags, simply because her clothing was rather revealing for this time. She shrugged knowing that there was not much that she would be able to do about it.

Deciding that there was no more time to lollygag around, Ino began to move towards the direction of Konoha. She knew that if she didn't seek them, then eventually, they would find her.

A genius. A prodigy. A God amongst Shinobi.

These were the words that had been used to describe him and more importantly, his brother. Those, however, were merely titles. Titles that proved to affect him little, if not at all. He was not one to so foolishly fall for such praises. Being praised meant little to him, if nothing at all. Perhaps it had to do with his upbringing, where results were the only way to prove his strength and prowess. Compliments and rewards were rarely given, they were seen as a distraction. If one was to become strong, then one must have the dedication to commit mind, body and soul to the Arts. To be praised for his hard work meant that he was not advancing as well as he could. Praise was only meant to mock those who were falling behind. He would not stand to fall behind, now that the animosity had ended. There was to be no idle time, not when the newly founded Village needed tending. Not when the threat of another battle could happen out of nowhere. He would see to it that this Village, the one that his brother so desperately desired, would not crumble before it reached its full potential. More often than not, he was told that he was too serious, that he needed to enjoy and relish in this new found peace.

Peace.

What was peace? Was it simply coming to terms that fighting was pointless? Was it forcing the enemy, that they had battled for so long, to surrender and submit to their will? Peace was only for fools to dream of and that was where his brother resided in. These idealistic notions that love and peace could make the World a better place. However, what his brother failed to understand, he knew all too well. It was within Human Nature to need and crave chaos and calamity. Human Nature dictated whether or not Humans could simply be content with living the way they were. Humans were filled with strengths and weaknesses, it only took a handful of said Humans to realize that life was not what they had expected.

Greed.

That was a weakness that flawed Humans. Civilians and Shinobi alike all faced the seducing temptations that greed provided. Wanting what they did not have. It spouted jealousy and resentment to those who were advancing faster than others. Bitterness would spout and false camaraderie would form between people, hiding their true intentions. There were prime examples of this but he dare not speak them to his brother, for that would already cause a greater rift between them. So he simply kept these thoughts to himself, knowing that in due time, hopefully, his brother would understand what he was trying to say. However, he doubted a day like that would come, his brother was far too idealistic and therefore, he made up for it being the realistic one of the two. It was a balance that he wished should not be needed, however, it was how things were.

As the newly established Village continued to grow, they sought a leader, Of course, it had to be his brother, for it was his dream after all. However, the Uchiha had been nominated by his brother, much to his dismay. He was fortunate to see that the Villagers disagreed with him, therefore the unanimous decision for his brother to become the leader was won. It had seemed to affect the Uchiha, slightly, as that man never fully opened up in his presence, which never bothered him. It was best that they stayed in this sort of limbo in their relationship. Neither willing to accept one another as friends just barely a notch of being enemies; as it should be. With the responsibilities that were suddenly placed upon his brother's shoulders, he found that he too became rather involved with the progression of the Village as well as attending many meetings about what was next for them and the Shinobi World.

Meeting after meeting, it only seemed as if their progress with making negotiations was at a snail's pace. Conflicts arose more often than not, as many had different ideals of how to go about things. Should they form alliances with other Villages? In order to have equal footing, the Tailed Beasts should be given to each respective Village but who would have the strongest? The weakest? It was frustrating and exhausting all at once, while they dealt with foreign forces, the influx of refugees and economic stability was also clashing with them. As much as he and his brother wanted to better the Village, he couldn't help but wonder if this was the dream we wanted to achieve. Was all of this worth it? Was it worth the daily arguments and struggles they faced for the dream of peace?

He scoffed slightly at the notion, knowing that the idea of peace and pacifying everyone was hindering their progress. If his brother would simply look at this objectively, he could see his flawed way of thinking but he supposed that was where he came in, as usual. He would simply help his brother find a balance between what they both thought was right for the Village, even if there was an initial disagreement. He solely lived to ensure that his brother was happy and safe, but now that they were looking after the lives of not only their Clan but others as well, he knew that things would need to be dealt with in a swift and efficient manner. It couldn't only be about that dream of his brother's but also the will of the people that chose to entrust their lives to him.

Staring up at the setting sun, he continued to contemplate all that was running through his ever working mind. He knew that he should spend less time thinking of all that his brother needed to attend to and rather focus on his own self. He was still weak. He knew that now that there were other Villages forming, more threats could arise. The things that Humans could accomplish by themselves was truly incredible, but with a large quantity of them working together, it could be terrifying. Lost in thought, he walked behind two men that he often found himself accompanying. One, he shared a relationship through blood, respect and loyalty. The other, he could care less about, it was only the bond he shared with the former that allowed him to tolerate his existence.

It was hard to describe sensing another person's Chakra. It was like something pressing against the inside of his skull; the pressure was gentle but noticeable. The more presence a person had, the greater the pressure in his skull became. It usually took him a while to get used to the Chakra signatures, for those with commanding presences were always the first thing that he sensed. Following the pressure, it felt like a jolt of electricity running down his spine, in order to alert him of a threat. For his age, his range was admirable, if not the best amongst the ranks of the Shinobi within their Village. Nothing went unnoticed within his range. It was safe to admit to himself, that when it came to being a Sensor, he was unmatched. He could easily identify the Chakras that belonged to those of the Village. He could detect those who were not familiar, even before they showed their faces. Their position was always known to him, which made it increasingly difficult to find a formidable opponent; when reading their Chakras.

As that familiar jolt of someone unknown entering his range traveled down his spine, causing him to halt mid step. There was a slow building pressure that steadily increased, causing a small grimace to leave him. He did his best not to give away too much, lest he cause worry in one of his companions. His eyes shifted into the direction that the sudden flare of Chakra came from, before he clenched his jaw, shoulders tensing slightly. What had surprised him, if not put him on high alert, was the fact as soon as he had sensed the Chakra, it disappeared off his grid. It was as if they vanished or rather, they were concealing themselves from him. It was unheard of! That only led him to the conclusion that they were an enemy.

"Tobirama?"

He felt his stiff body, relax at the sound of his brother's voice. His shoulders sagged slightly, knowing that he had unintentionally caught his company's attention. Glancing over at Hashirama, he frowned, more annoyed in the sense that he could not detect whatever threat was coming towards them. "Brother," he replied, as casually as he could manage. "What is it?"

"You have become...distracted," Hashirama stated carefully, knowing that when his brother became this way, it was either because he disagreed with previous sentiments or he was reaching a level that tolerance could not be subdued around their other company. "Should I ask what has captured you?"

Tobirama once more, glanced off to the direction he had sensed that Signature. It was very much like Hashirama to be more concerned about others, even when he was dealing tasks that required his full attention. His eyes narrowed slightly, out of annoyance. "It is nothing to concern yourself with." He let out a heavy breath before he shook his head in dismissal. "I shall take my leave for now."

"Would you like company?" Hashirama asked in a curious and hopeful manner.

He glanced between the two men that had been walking ahead of him. He shook his head and turned to leave. "As I have stated previously, it is nothing to concern yourself with, Brother." With that, he left behind the two that had been idling chatting how wonderful the Village was turning out and other foolish forms of conversation. It wasn't like they would include him in such discussions, but it wasn't like he was too fond of spending his free time in the presence of the Uchiha. He supposed that this distraction had been a good excuse to leave the insufferable position of being a third wheel. He only hoped that whoever it was, proved to be worthy of such distractions.

She had traveled less than half an hour before she came across her first obstacle. To the untrained eye, it would appear as if there was nothing wrong with the place that she halted in front of. However for her, there was a large wall, shimmering slightly in front of her. As a Sensor, she knew that some Villages put up a barrier to alert them should an enemy come within their territory, however, she knew that this was far greater. She had spent hours upon hours of endless devotion and training in not only her Family Techniques but also becoming a better Sensor. All Sensor Type Shinobi had a range that allowed them to sense Chakra from all different directions. This was less practical than a barrier, however, if someone could make a Sensor range this large, then they were a formidable opponent. She took in a deep breath, pacing in front of the Range set before her. Once she entered, she knew who she would be alerting and that set a slight jolt of fear and excitement. She blamed her youth for the latter sensation but she thought of the opportunity she had here. The learning opportunity she had was irreplaceable. The test that she was going to put herself through would be far greater than any training she had done up until this point.

If anything, the Yamanaka Heiress was always hungry for more knowledge about how to become a better Shinobi. She always looked for the tricks and trades that went unnoticed by those who stuck to logic and reason. She fed off of her curiosity that generally resulted in her failure but she always gained vast amounts of information and knowledge with how she proceeded with her tasks. Taking in a deep breath, she knew that if she continued to lollygag at this point, she would not get the results that she wanted. The sun was nearly gone from the skyline and she knew that she would collapse from exhaustion soon enough; she might as well follow through with her plan. After all, she didn't know what quitting meant, it simply went against her will. Taking a few steps back, she began to run towards the invisible barrier.

Once she reached it, she felt this jolt that ran down her spine, knowing that she entered a point of no return. It was almost as if she knew exactly when the transmission had hit the barrier holder, as the Chakra signature that had been weak before, spiked immediately. She swallowed thickly, wondering if this was the best course of action, but what other choice did she have? She could sense that the Chakra signature was beginning to move in her direction, so she decided to try to make herself seem as small as possible. She did not want to be seen as a threat. She simply needed to explain her situation, but would anyone believe her? She shook her, no, she had the abilities and the specialization to make them believe in her. She knew that much, she only wondered if she would be given the chance.

She desperately needed the chance.

The Chakra signature had not become unknown to him, rather whoever was coming had made their presence less noticeable. Was this a ploy to make him underestimate them or was it a way to show that they were not a threat? The fact that he was thinking this much about what possibly the intruder could want put him on edge. They had had relative peace, as Hashirama liked to say, for a few months now, while the entire Shinobi World was joining in the efforts to make Villages and a safer environment for them to live in. He should have known that this idea of peace would not last long, as it was clear to him that the intruder knew what they were doing. A frown touched his lips and his eyes narrowed dangerously as he raced through the trees. It was better that he eliminate the foe at hand before any trouble could be caused within the walls of their Village. That was why he wouldn't allow Hashirama or anyone else to join him. The opponent had known how to get his sole attention, therefore, he could only assume that he was a prime target. He scoffed at the idea, who could possibly match his strength and prowess, other than an Uchiha, his long time enemy?

What if this was a distraction?

He slid to a halt at that thought, kneeling to the ground and placing his finger on the dry land. Sending out his Chakra, he could only sense the weak signature of the intruder. There was no one else. What could that possibly mean? If this was not some sort of decoy, then either it was a rogue Shinobi acting out of greed and jealousy or...or what? His eyebrows furrowed in frustration and confusion as he tried to piece everything together. Scoffing slightly, he knew it would be better to face his opponent head on rather than to take a more tactical approach. It was obvious that they did not respect what he was capable of, therefore he would show no mercy upon their foolish self.

Once more, he set off at a quick pace, wanting to end this confrontation as soon as possible. Knowing Hashirama, he would either become too impatient or curious of what he was up to. There was no need to involve Hashirama in these insignificant matters. His eyes darted to left as it seemed he had come close to the intruder, they took the defensive, lurking within the coverage of foliage and increasing darkness that came with nightfall. He stopped, his face void of emotion as he peered into the darkness, waiting for the opponent to strike. It felt like hours were passing by as he was stuck in this stalemate. His opponent refused to make their presence greater and he refused to make the first move upon this unknown foe. Was this fear that he sensed, coming from their Chakra? Was this a way of them trying to lower his guard? He could almost laugh if they thought him to be as kind as his brother. His ire and impatience was growing as well. He almost wanted to applaud them for getting beneath his skin but he would prove to them that he could overcome such annoyances. The shuffling of leaves caught his attention and he immediately charged into the brush, hearing a surprised gasp of air before the sound of a soft puff of air hit his ears. He stood in the wake of smoke dissipating into the air, before a log fell to the ground with a resound thump.

Scarlet eyes stared in disbelief at the log that took place instead of a person. How was that possible? He turned immediately as the Chakra signature had darted to the left, instinctively he followed after the opponent. How could they have replaced their body with a log? How did they know of such Techniques? Gritting his teeth together, he would not allow this foe to leave his grasp. It would seem as if they developed a Technique that could be used for decoys and confusion. If he could not capture them by brute strength, then he would go with speed. He would admit that the agility that the other had was admirable, but to outmatch him, it would be next to impossible. He swiftly moved through the trees, noting that the opponent was moving rather sluggish for a Shinobi with such a presence within his mind. He could hear the careless snap of branches and twigs breaking as they moved through the foliage, making it easier for him to track them down. However, despite their sloppy show of their ability to run away, they managed to keep their distance from him. Whether it be disappearing in a puff of smoke or turning sharply through the endless amounts of trees, they were giving him a chase that he had desired for some time.

Were they trying to tire him out? How laughable. This game of cat and mouse was beginning to bore him, unlike a certain Uchiha, playing with his opponent before going in for the kill, was not something that appealed to him. It only caused his ire and frustration to grow. A low growl left him as the Chakra disappeared once more, but he was quickly catching onto this game that they were playing. He was quick to turn around, his arm lashing out into the darkness. It was within those few seconds that his fingers brushed against something that was impossibly soft, silken to the touch. It was within those few seconds that the triumph of being victor filled his being. Instantly, his hand wrapped around whatever his fingers had become entangled within whatever he had reached into and he tightened his grip, harshly pulling it back towards him. There was a strangled cry that filled the air as the weight of the intruder was pulled back towards him. His other hand reached to unsheathe his sword, the blade glistening in the speckles of moonlight that managed to appear through the trees.

The intruder's body continued to fall back due to the momentum of his pull, the body falling rather ungracefully to the ground. He immediately pressed their body into the ground, knee resting on their chest and blade hovering over their throat. As the adrenaline slowly began to die down, it took him by surprise when he finally looked at the intruder.

A woman?

A pair of wide eyes that mirrored the color of the ocean stared up at him, before the body once more, disappeared into a wisp of smoke. Immediately he stiffened, before a presence from behind caught his attention. He moved quickly in order to subdue the threat, however he was greeted with something completely different.

"Mind Body Disturbance Technique!"

Mid-step he felt his whole balance falter, the world around him began to spin and sway within his vision. He felt his stomach lurch uncomfortably, as his knees buckled under the force of the Technique. He cursed internally, knowing that he had let his guard down, thinking that he had captured the woman. Of course, how was he to expect that she would be so clever. How was he to know that she would be capable of such battle abilities? He had surely underestimated her and he could feel his annoyance begin to grow. He took a knee, trying to recover from the sudden equilibrium shift, holding back the nausea that coursed through his stomach. Gritting his teeth together, he glared up at the woman. She was studying him with wary eyes, her hands curled into a strange Hand Seal.

Long blonde locks tumbled down in an endless river down her back and past her hips. She wore a dark shade of purple, the top exposing her midriff and a long skirt covering her legs. She was certainly different than any woman around his Village. It would seem that there was someone out there plotting to attack their Village. He let out a low growl, knowing that if he failed to incapacitate this woman, then they would face grave consequences. He watched as she let out a heavy sigh, a frown touching her lips. Her hands flew away from the Hand Seal and she slowly moved closer to him.

"I apologize for-"

Ino never finished her sentence for her body was forced to turn and was slammed into the nearest tree. Her arms began restrained behind her and a pulsing ache came to her head. She could feel blood begin to trickle down from her nose, as her face was firmly pressed against the tree. Gritting her teeth, she realized that she had made an error in her plan. She probably should have taken control of his body, but his will seemed too strong for her to fully latch onto his mind. Breathing heavily, she struggled against him before she stilled at the blade that touched her neck.

"State your business," he commanded slowly, shoving her roughly against the tree.

A wheeze of pain left her as her eyes closed in pain. "Please," she gasped out. "Let me explain."

"Explain, you say." Tobirama contemplated the thought, scoffing slightly. "You seek sympathy on my part yet you have been eluding me for quite sometime now. How is that to make me believe in your plea?"

"I assure you I meant no harm," Ino managed out. "You clearly did not seem to be in the state of neutral conversation. I was merely trying to cease your attacks."

"You have trespassed upon land that is not of your territory. There is no need for someone, such as myself, to grant you mercy. Especially when you have so clearly exhibited the ability to conceal yourself, do you think me stupid, woman?"

Her eyes widened in fear as he pressed the blade closer to her throat, she was running out of options. "It was not my intention to misguide you, as you can see, I am not trying to resist. I was simply protecting my life." Her tongue parted to wet her dried lips. "I promise you I mean, you and this Village, no harm."

"State your Heritage."

He could feel her body tense immediately at the question. He was unsure of how to take that answer to his question. This was a ploy. She was an enemy, therefore, if she stated her Clan, then she would be giving away her position. It would be best to end her life no. Someone with the skills that she had displayed prior, would surely cause a great threat within their developing Village. For all he knew, she was a spy and that was not worth taking the risk.

"I-I have no Clan."

He blinked and a sneer came across his face. "Preposterous. You must think of me as a fool, woman. No Shinobi, of your stature, would be without a Clan." He leaned closer, enjoying the way her breathing hitched out of fear. "You may have fooled others prior to me, however, the absurdity of your claims have been your downfall. Surely, a spy, like yourself, knows when a mission has failed."

"A spy?" Ino gasped out, realizing that she had seen the errors in her approach. Of course he would think of her as a spy, the Warring States was still a hostile Era of time. She tried to think of anything, something in order to save herself. "Please reconsider, I am-"

Her voice stopped as she felt the blade slowly begin to dig into her throat, realizing that there was no reasoning with the male above her. She held her breath, realizing that this was her final moment in life. Closing her eyes, she prayed that he would end her life swiftly, the thought of being in pain was terrifying. The sound of his hand tightening on the hilt of his blade signalled to her that he was ready to cut open her throat.

"Tobirama!"

A shout rang through the air and she felt no pain, only the sudden shift of weight on her back. The heat of the blade hovered over her exposed neck left, she knew that by some miracle, she had been saved. Tobirama let out a disappointed huff of air, the blade moving away from her neck. Turning his head, to glance over his shoulder, he met the angered expression of Hashirama. He knew that now that Hashirama was here, the life of this spy would more than likely be extended. He removed the weight of himself from her back. He heard her suck in a deep breath of air, as he turned around to face his brother.

"I was certain that I made it clear that this was not of your concern," Tobirama chided.

A frown tugged at the corner of Hashirama's lips and he shook his head. "I may not understand why this woman has caused such animosity from you but we shall not take the lives of those who seek us no harm. That is not what our Village stands for."

"This...woman is a spy, Hashirama," Tobirama hissed out as he pointed an accusing finger at her. "How can you be so oblivious? It is best that we eliminate the threat before they set a plan into motion."

"Tobirama, that is more than enough," Hashirama ordered, slowly moving over towards the woman. "I do hope that my brother has not inflicted too many wounds upon you." There was relief on his face as she looked at herself and shook her head.. "Tell me, does anything that he states hold truth?"

Ino rubbed the blood that trickled from her nose and shook her head once more. "I am no spy." She stated once more, with more conviction. "If you would be so inclined, I would like for you to grant me the opportunity to explain myself."

There was a long pause of silence between the three. She could hear the blood rushing through her veins and heart pounding in her ears. If she couldn't sway the Hokage, then she was as good as dead. Her eyes flickered back and forth between the two brothers, wondering if there was anything else that she could do. She knew that using her Techniques, she could probably manipulate them into believing her but that went against her morals. They were seen as allies, after all, they were part of her Village. There was no way that she could use such foul play.

"Of course, I am not heartless," Hashirama stated, tossing a small glance at Tobirama, who simply crossed his arms over his chest. "What say we return to the Village and see that your wounds are treated."

"Please have no concern for my current state of being, they are minor to begin with." She grimaced slightly as she shifted her weight on her feet. "I sense that I am not yet trusted, I wish to clear the air."

"Brother, she states that she is Clanless, yet she possesses strength and capabilities that rival our own. Surely, you do not-" Tobirama was silenced by Hashirama's hand. His frown increased further as it seemed that his brother would give the woman what she wanted.

"I understand your concerns." Hashirama stated gently. "If it will put you at ease, please, inform us of what has been done unto you."

Ino bit the inside of her cheek knowing that if she told them, it would be less believable. She wasn't sure anyone else would have been able to get this far, should that Technique have landed on her. "I cannot tell you," Ino paused at the scoff that left Tobirama. "Rather it is difficult to explain. I can, however, show you."

Tobirama tensed as the woman moved to stand, he was prepared to attack should his suspicions come true. He could feel his curiosity growing, wondering what she meant by showing Hashirama what happened. His fingers gripped his arms tightly as she lifted her hand towards his brother, palm facing upward. Hashirama glanced from Ino's face then down towards her extended hand. He was slightly hesitant, seeing how they knew nothing about her but he was curious. What was she to show by holding out her hand? What kind of power did she possess? What kind of leader would he be, if he chose not to grant her this moment, to show that she was in fact an ally? After a few more moments of hesitation and contemplation, he reached out and took her hand.

AN: Alright, so we need to remember that Tobirama is the one who came up with the Shadow Clone Jutsu. I've done extensive research and it doesn't state anywhere when exactly he had come up with the technique, sooooo I'm going to use that as my advantage and do what I will. Let's also say that for future reference, a lot of techniques and jutsu that Ino uses would be considered "new" during this time period. I haven't found anywhere yet when the Yamanaka Clan allied themselves with Konoha when it was founded, so I'm just making it up as I goooo. Thanks for staying to read another chapter! Let me know what you think. Until next time! -Tinyraver
