I know that the last chapter was kind of boring but I'm working on the next ones not being like that. Also I'm really excited because I've had this one chapter in my mind since the beginning of writing this fic and I'm finally getting close to it. Anyways enjoy! :D
Okay another thing, I see that some of you guys are having trouble with Chapter 23 so I was wondering if you guys think I should also post the fan fic on Wattpad.
Oh and also, Chapter 25 will be coming really close to this chapter. Sorry for making you guys wait a week for the last two chapters.
...
2 weeks later
Katara was drying herself with a towel after getting out of the bathtub. She put on her navy silk robe and reached into her pocket to take out the necklace that Aang had carved out for her.
She then exited her bathroom and when entering her bedroom she jumped to find Aang standing there holding Liang.
"Ah! Aang! What are you-" she then realized what she was holding in her hand and quickly hid it in her pocket. "-What are you doing here?"
"Sorry I didn't mean to scare you. I knocked on the door and you didn't answer. I peeked in, didn't see you, and then I heard the water running so I figured you were bathing. So I just came in to hold Liang for a little bit." He then began to playfully hold the baby's fist.
"So what's in your pocket?" She then quickly looked up in shock. "What?" she asked rapidly.
"Your pocket. You were holding something and then you put it in your pocket and now you're holding on to it really hard." Katara looked down to notice how tight she was holding her robe's pocket. "Um, no- nothing."
The airbender smiled at her, "Oh come on. Do you forget I can read you like a book? Seriously, what's in your pocket?"
Katara's tone began to change, "Aang, believe me it's nothing."
"Okay now I really want to know."
"Aang, seriously just drop it." She became more annoyed.
"Katara, come on. What do you have in your pocket?"
"IT'S NONE OF YOUR BUSINESS!"
He gulped at her tone of voice and looked down in a frown. The airbender breathed out, "You're right, it isn't any of my business."
Aang placed Liang back in her crib. "I'll just- I'll just go." He began to walk towards the door. "Aang, wait!" She tried to plea but he was already out of the room.
"Agh!" she cried out in irritation. "Damn it! Damn it!" Tears began to form in her eyes and she covered her face in her hands.
The next day
Late at night a knock came to Aang's door and he opened it to find Zuko. "Oh hey, Zuko!"
"Hey! Um, could we talk." He said while pointing outside to which the airbender nodded 'yes' to.
The two friends were walking through the Fire Nation gardens. "So... what did you want to talk about?" Aang finally asked.
Zuko began to breathe heavily, "Okay before I say anything, you should know that you're probably gonna get mad. And I will understand if you never want to talk to me again afterwards."
Aang began to look a little worried at his words, "What is it?"
The Firelord took a deep breath, "While you were gone... I kissed Katara."
The Avatar's eyes widened in surprise, "I'm sorry you what?"
"I kissed Kat-" he was then interrupted by Aang punching him in the face. "Ow!"
"Sorry! I'm sorry! I shouldn't have done that!" Aang said while trying to help him from not falling to the ground.
"No, no. I deserve that."
"No, I let my anger get the best of me." Zuko then finally stood up right and so did Aang.
"So," the airbender took a deep breath, "You kissed Katara."
The firebender sighed, "Yeah, I'm sorry."
"Hey, no you don't need to apologize. Look, I was gone and you guys didn't know if I was even alive. And Katara's free to kiss whoever she wants." He said while dropping his shoulders to the last part.
"Well she didn't exactly kiss me back. She just kind of... stood there not knowing what to do. And then she pushed me off and said I had no right to do that. I told her about my feelings for her. And she told me-"
He was cut off again by the airbender, "Wait back up, are you trying to tell me that you kissed Katara? Or that you're in love with her?"
"Um, both?"
"YOU'RE IN LOVE WITH MY-" he was then forced to stop himself because he didn't know what to call her, girlfriend? partner? love of my life? the most important person in the world to me? "-baby's...mother?"
"Honestly, I don't know." Zuko admitted.
"I taught I did. But now... I'm not so sure. I've been talking to Suki a lot lately, and she's helped me realize that it wasn't really love but more of a fantasy. After everything that happened with Mai and the baby. Seeing Katara there, pregnant. I feel like in my mind I taught I could have with her what I couldn't have with Mai. And I now realize how truly messed up that was."
He then tried to change the mood, "But hey, at least everything worked out in the end. And you guys are now together, and you're happy."
To which the airbender looked down to the ground, "Well...we're not actually together."
Zuko's eyes then widened. "What? Why not?"
"It's just...we've had some problems and we're just kind of taking time away from each other right now."
"You guys are gonna be fine, I mean you guys are Aang and Katara."
The airbender raised an eyebrow at him, "What do you mean?"
"I mean, that you guys have what people spend their whole lives searching for and sometimes don't even find. You two have this love that I've never seen before."
Aang frowned again, "Well I'm not so sure that Katara feels that way."
"What are you talking about?"
"It's just," the airbender paused, "Before I was captured, we got into this argument and she said that she didn't see a future with me."
"Oh please, you can't seriously believe that she actually meant that?"
Aang looked to the ground once again. "Aang, Katara loves you more than anyone."
"How can you be so sure?" He asked while wiping away a tear.
"You didn't see her while you were gone. Aang, she was miserable and that's an understatement. Anyone who saw her could see that she wasn't herself. It was like a part of her was missing, and it was. We all believed that you were gone, and that you were never going to come back. But she didn't believe that. After so much time of all of us telling her that she should maybe start to move on, she never did. She was the one person who never gave up on you."
Aang smiled softly and taught about what his friend just said to him. They both stood there for a good minute before Aang speaking again. "So...you and Suki?"
"Huh?" Zuko questioned and the realized what his friend was implying. "Oh, no. No, no, no."
He began to laugh at the idea, "No, no. No? No."
"One more 'no' and I just might believe you," the airbender joked.
"Nah, Suki and I aren't like that. We're just really good friends."
"Whatever you say, Sifu Hotman." He joked again and the Firelord gave him an annoyed look.
Later that night
Aang knocked on Katara's door and she opened it with a surprised look of seeing him there. "Hey!"
"Hey."
He then stepped into the bedroom and rubbed his neck in embarrassment. "I just wanted to come and apologize for pushing you earlier."
"No, no I should be the one apologizing. I shouldn't have snapped at you like that."
They were stopped from continuing after Liang began to cry. They both went over to her crib and Katara began to rock her slowly.
"Shh, shh come on Penguin don't cry." She said to the baby while continuing to rock her.
After minutes of her not being able to calm her down, Aang stepped in. "Here let me try," he said while extending his arms out.
She gave him the baby and almost instantly, the crying stopped. "Un-be-lievable."
"Hey what can I say? The ladies love me." He said with a smirk.
She smiled and punched him slightly in the shoulder which made them both laugh. Then a knock came to the door.
Katara opened it and found a palace servant with a letter in hand. "Lady Katara?"
"Yes?"
"This is for you." He handed her the letter and she closed the door. While she began to read the letter Aang was still rocking Liang to sleep.
Katara then dropped the letter and fell to the ground. "Katara?" Aang asked in a worried voice. She then began to heavily cry.
Aang placed Liang back in her crib and ran towards her. "Katara what's wrong?" He asked while sitting on the ground holding her.
She continued to cry heavily and he held her. "What happened?"
The waterbender finally got the courage to speak, "My- my gran- my grandmother's dead." His eyes softened and continued to hold her even tighter. He held her head with one hand and caressed through her hair while she kept on crying. "I'm so sorry. It's going to be okay."
