It was hard for Beli to tell who was enjoying themselves more, the giggling baby swinging his pudgy little hands happily through the wrapping paper, or his mother, chuckling to herself as she struggled to get Philip dressed.
"There you go Philly, you little monster. Okay Beli, get a picture quick, he'll be off as soon as I put him down."
She readied the camera as fast as she could, as Kyanna swept the wriggling child up into her arms. He erupted in more bubbly laughter as they posed for the camera. Beli could only grin at the boy, wrapped up in his new fuzzy reindeer onesie, felt antlers flopping about on his head. She snapped as many photos as she could before the boisterous little man broke free of his mother's hold, disappearing into the pile of wrapping paper and empty boxes once again. Kyanna just let him enjoy himself, there wasn't any way he could hurt himself after all.
"Seriously, that's amazing. How did you hide it from me?"
Beli's grin turned smug. It'd been a difficult month of sewing while Kyanna had been at work, but the sheer joy of both of them when Philly had torn the parcel open was definitely worth it.
"Oh I've got plenty of secrets. Come on, look at the shots. I think they turned out okay."
Kyanna hurried to her side, eager to see the snaps Beli had taken. The sudden closeness of her Latin girlfriend sent Beli's heart fluttering, even after all this time she still couldn't believe how lucky she was. She lent her head on Kyanna's shoulder as they looked through picture after picture of Philly's Christmas Day.
"Hmm. There's something missing….."
Oh no, had she missed something? She'd been chasing the boy around with the camera all morning, she was pretty sure she'd got everything.
"I think it needs a family shot."
A furious blush rose all across Beli's face as Kyanna planted a massive, wet kiss on her cheek, snapping a quick selfie of the both of them. She would probably never get used to how passionate the bubbly woman could be.
"Oh, um, shouldn't we get Philly in a shot then?."
She returned a small peck on the cheek, surprised at how quiet her voice had become. She was even more shocked by how timid Kyanna had turned when she pulled back. The younger woman was blushing and looking at her toes, trying to hide a poorly wrapped package behind her back.
"Here, sorry it's not that great, it was my first time."
She thrust the soft bundle into Beli's arms, letting the tall Indian woman unwrap it carefully. Beli's heart caught in her throat as the contents unfurled itself. A long stretch of fluffy purple fabric, streaked with hints of red and navy blue. She held the scarf up to her face, covering her mouth and nose as she fought back tears. It smelled of Kyanna.
"It's lovely Kyanna. Thank you."
A goofy grin burst across the younger woman's face as Beli pulled the scarf around her neck. It looped four times, but still looked cute on the her. Beli gripped the material tight as they stood there, both unable to look the other in the eye, until her foot bumped a small box hidden under the paper. She'd nearly forgotten!
"This one's for you. I've never really picked out something like this before."
She handed Kyanna the box carefully, nervous as she undid the delicate red ribbon. Kyanna gasped and covered her mouth as she lifted the lid.
"Beli! It's beautiful!"
Beli was glad she'd made a good choice as Kyanna pulled out the thin gold chain, letting the small heart pendant dangle in the air. She held it out for her girlfriend.
"Could you?"
Beli took the necklace as Kyanna turned, lifting her hair off of her nape. Beli's fingers trembled slightly as she pushed the clasp together.
"Well, how does it look?"
The little golden charm shone against Kyanna's chest, the inlaid amethysts matching the soft violet of her eyes.
"You're gorgeous."
Beli had blurted it out without thinking, sending Kyanna into another embarrassed fidget. She pulled the smaller girl close, wrapping an arm around her waist and lifting her head to look straight into those enchanting eyes. Their lips met quietly, leaving only the soft rustling and happy babbling from Philip to fill the room.
It was a tender moment for the pair of them, one they hoped would repeat year after year.
