Subaru was led throughout across a building that Roswal would be envious, the woman who had 'collected' them from the forest didn't speak. That was good, Subaru didn't want to speak. He wanted to forget, to live in the past and abandon the future. He wanted to remember Emilia's lap pillows and Rem's beautiful smile- he wanted to forget that Rem was incapacitated, forgotten by all but him. He wanted to forget that Emilia had most likely perished without him.
This wasn't a miscalculation due to his once large pride- against Ley and Reid, his friends stood no hope without his assistance. Without Cor Leonis, Ram wouldn't be able to unleash her full strength, and without her assistance, Julius wouldn't be able to match the first sword saint for long. Julius was strong, stronger than Subaru could ever hope to be- but he was no sword saint.
They, both the Anastasia and Emilia Camp, were no Reinhardt. Their reach was hampered by human boundaries. But like with every loop, like with every tragedy, Subaru couldn't forget. Even when his memories had been eaten and Louis had hitch-hiked his person, the knight didn't forget for long. He remembers, every detail and every painful scream of fear.
He hated his weakness. He hated his indecision. And most of all, he hated how he constantly failed. No matter his efforts, he failed constantly to gain the result he once had, But now they were gone- vanished into thin air, as if the knight hadn't achieved such great feats. His happy ending that he had worked so hard for had been completely ruin by Satella.
He wanted to cry, he wanted to scream in frustration. And most of all, the most pathetic part, was that he wanted to die. He wanted to kill himself and disappear, to go back at the cost of forcing Beatrice to witness such a traumatising sight. He hated that he wanted that, that his mind had now judged this loop as a dead end and wanted to reset.
But the knight couldn't do so, his heart had taken command and now he was alive- an opportunity to go back wasted all because he didn't want Beatrice to see him commit suicide. Subaru had promised himself to clad his heart in iron, to save them all but the current him was unable to do so. The current him had broken the silent vow he had made himself a year ago.
He was truly slothful.
"Where are you taking us, in fact."
The woman didn't humour Beatrice's question, she didn't even turn her head or pause. She moved with an air of dignity and resolve- as if her fate, her purpose had been set in stone. But Subaru, who had only a year of actual training underneath his belt, could tell that she is strong. She, like Julius and Reinhardt, was out of his reach- a person with strength that he couldn't match.
Beatrice crossed her chest cutely, a small, childish pout on her face. He would laugh, if his chest didn't hurt so much. He may know that his friends were dead, that he had failed and could only blame himself, but Subaru still wanted- no, needed to mourn, to remember the good and the bad. He had failed and wished to be selfish.
Truly, he hated himself and his lack of action that had caused all of this.
But currently, he can only move forward, protecting all that he could.
That way, he could meet the fallen and beg for forgiveness.
"Ozpin wishes to see you."
The knight walked through those oak doors, giving a wavered smile to Beatrice, but all he wanted to do was cry out in despair.
Ozpin, it turns out, was a middle aged man with grey hair.
"Please take a seat," the leather padded chair was comfortable, and seemed anything but cheap. "My name is Ozpin, headmaster of this fine school. May I have your name?"
"Subaru Natsuki."
"That's a strong name, so Subaru what do you think of my school so far?"
"... It's good, it's much bigger than Roswal's mansion." The set of buildings, were each several times bigger than the mansion Roswal had built after the original burnt down- despite his wealth, the margrave couldn't have hope to build something as big as this, even with his horrible ability to take over his descendants bodies. Ozpin leaned forward, as if his interest had been attained by such foreign words, of the name that Subaru hated.
"May I be so bold to ask who this Roswal is?"
"Just some flashy clown- it's better you don't know much about him." Roswal had been crazy enough to desire to slay Volcanica, the divine dragon of Lugunica, who had helped seal Satella. He had also been crazy enough to try and bend Subaru to his own will, so that this dark and seemingly impossible desire could come to fruition.
Subaru would have rather ditched the clown after the events at Sanctuary, but that would have dramatic consequences. Consequences that would destroy their shared goal of placing Emilia on the throne. So they had learnt to tolerate each other, even if Roswal had promised to incinerate all he cared for if he so happened to fail to save even a single friend. He was the one person that Subaru hoped to forget.
"We all have people we dislike- I certainly do. I apologise if I am intruding, but I must ask for the safety of the minor in you care- do you have anywhere to go," Ozpin paused, watching Subaru's breathe get stuck in his own throat like toffee getting trapped in his teeth. The man received his answer as soon as he saw the knights expression. The headmaster of a school that must teach hundreds, if not thousands, took a small sip from the dark green porcelain mug in his hand before continuing. "One does not simple wander inside Emerald Forest if they have a home to return to. Most wouldn't be able to kill a hundred Grimm in an hour, let alone slay a thousand Grimm in a few minutes without a scratch."
"Y-you saw that?" His voice was but a whisper, as if speaking of such a thing was taboo. It was, the Witch of Envy and Satella had no wish for him to disclose their complicated relationship- even if the latter cared for his well being. She had made such a thing known, crushing the heart of all he had told with such brutality and ease that it had become clear what the consequences were.
The Witch of Envy had suddenly taken over Emilia's body and decided to destroy everything but him, all because Subaru had broken the deal that was pushed upon without consideration of his well being when he had let out every burden he had carried onto Echidna a year ago. She had done this despite the person he confided in was dead, and if by chance Ozpin, a man he had only known for a few minutes, knew that such a selfish and jealous being was within his body, hiding within his skin- Subaru had no idea what the consequences were.
Maybe this world would end and without Reinhardt to stop her, Satella and the Witch of Envy would surely succeed. Or maybe he would be trapped in the darkness of her lovely, suffocating embrace- the knight had no wish to experience such a thing.
"If you call seeing Grimm being torn apart by an unseen force 'seeing', then I guess that is accurate. You power- no, your potential is exactly what the world needs to avoid devastation. That is the sole reason why I'm offering you a position as a student in Beacon Academy. You education will be paid for and all the benefits that come along with it, it's an offer that I encourage you to accept."
"... I agree."
Just like that, Subaru, a man who can only redo and fix what was wrong, was mistaken as a powerful asset.
With a power he never had and never will.
He wanted to scream in frustration and despair.
Beatrice had been told to wait outside.
Subaru, with a shaky smile that had been false had asked this of her as that blonde woman led him through those large oak doors. A simple task that someone as intelligent as her could do in her sleep.
"Subaru would be severely disappointed, in fact," she muttered as she was dragged along like child by an 'actual' child with black hair with red highlights. In her heart, the spirit knew that such a feeling could never be directed towards her by the knight- but to install a sense of foreboding, to install consequences that would evitable become false, she desperately hoped for this moment to end.
Subaru needed her.
But despite her massive magical power as a great spirit, Beatrice lacked physical strength and as a result, the child dragged her along with surprising ease, in front of three 'slightly' older children behind her. "Who is this 'Subaru' you keep speaking of anyway."
The white haired girl, hair as white as snow, spoke- although, almost instantly, Beatrice could sense the condescension. Arrogant and prideful, a combination that the great spirit found ugly. She had met many arrogant men and women that had wandered into her forbidden library, seeking her hand and the immense power that came with it. The great spirit had had no wish meet anymore of those types of people. Unfortunately, life was full of disappointment and decided to kick her while she was weak. Her frown deepened, annoyance spreading throughout her heart but Beatrice decided to humour the child. Her response practiced countless times, its message clear.
"His my partner, in fact."
To Beatrice, this was the natural response. She was proud to have Subaru as her contractor, and to her, she possessed the best one that couldn't be rivalled- a hero and a special person that all could see, even if they were completely blind.
He just shone that brightly- not from talent nor family history, but from sheer will clad in iron. Bonded by an eternal contract, Subaru and herself were connected by their very souls and that was exactly why she knew he wasn't in a good place at the very moment. The knight had tried to commit suicide and would have succeeded if she hadn't been there to stop him. Quite clearly, Beatrice knew that he was overburdened, his mind far too stressed with mental trauma to function normally.
Only a complete idiot would think suicide would fix anything! And Subaru wasn't that type of idiot. Beatrice desperately hoped, hoping that he was still with her. That he wouldn't leave her alone like she had been for four centuries.
He had promised, and the knight tried his upmost to keep those promises.
But he needed help, just like every other human. Beatrice, who had once dreamed of an actual relation ship, a dream that had fortunately come true, would gladly offer it. He was her contractor, her partner and the great spirit would heal any wound, no matter how small.
"Like your boyfriend, that's really cute!" The blonde, the one with breasts that made the great spirit feel self-conscious, exclaimed excitedly. With a blush that could rival a young maiden, Beatrice gave her a cold glare, a glare that only one man could make waver.
"No, I'm certainly far too old for him, in fact." If they were speaking of numerical age, than Beatrice was over forty times Subaru's senior- much to her disappointment. Unfortunately, the spirit, who possessed four hundred years of finely tuned wisdom grinded in the Forbidden Library, forgot that she looked like she was actually twelve. Of course, this had always been an inconvenience and practically handed the children the misunderstanding that her 'partner' was absurdly young.
"So, he's five? Six?"
The white haired child frowned, obviously annoyed at her answer- her blue eyes showed that she disapproved of great spirits behaviour. Did this woman think she, a great spirit, was a common pedophile! Beatrice, with four hundred years of life, had never once wanted to cast minya so hard in her extraordinary life. But with the lack of a viable mana supply (aka Emilia) and the disappointing ethics that unfortunately mixed in with murder- Beatrice held down her hand, fist clenched tightly.
The black haired girl that walked closely behind everyone else, the silent and almost invisible one was the least annoying. She was the one Beatrice liked the most, for her silence was appreciated.
"So where are you dragging me to, I suppose?"
"To the mess hall, of course."
Beatrice knew that she had no need to eat, her body functioned on mana and mana alone. She was not a human nor Demi-human but a being created with pure mana, but she, like all spirits, enjoyed the taste of good food and the opportunity to taste decent food after weeks of rations was far too appealing.
"Why have you stopped, I suppose?"
The youngest child, the one with black hair and red highlights smiled brightly, before dragging Beatrice along with more motivation. Whilst the great spirit cared for the Emilia Camp greatly, they always came second when compared with Subaru.
Subaru walked on auto pilot, ignoring the curious glances of teens far stronger than himself.
His body was heavy, exhausted from exertion and his mind fatigued from excessive suffering. If he had been in a normal headspace, he would be charging ahead and exclaiming in excitement at every detail, looking like a fool. But at this moment, with the deaths of everyone who he held dear weighed so heavily on his mind- Subaru couldn't care less about all the aesthetics of this new school he now attended.
The knight didn't care about the marble statues of heroes that were foreign to him. He didn't care about the students that looked at him with a curious eye. At this very moment, he didn't care if he was stabbed in the back, at least the pain would be well deserved. Subaru had failed and he wanted to fix it. But he couldn't and now he could only mourn. Subaru wanted to hug Beatrice and mourn- weep like the pathetic coward that he was.
As he mindlessly walked, the knight could feel the great spirit, like a small string that connected her soul with his own. He knew that she could also 'feel' him, and thus, he began to follow the string to its source as if it was second nature. He was led to a large hall, wooden tables and long flat chairs beside them. Hundreds of students sat down at each table, digging into their food and socialising like all teenagers should.
A mess hall, Subaru remembered the white walls of the mess hall that had been in his previous high school, located in his original world. It felt like such a long time ago, it felt like years since he had even seen his parents in reality, not some twisted test. But that opportunity was long gone, wasted when he had been there and was now only present in the knights memories.
It was ironic, he had abandoned school in favour of escapism, before being transported to his wildest fantasies in a twisted way and now, after all he had been through- he was now attending another school. He, a hopeless idiot, could understand the irony in such a turnaround.
His scary eyes, tired and now cold with despair searched for the familiar cream drills that made Beatrice recognisable from a distance. Instantly, the knight saw that the great spirit who sat with young people, eating a rather nice looking meat pie. He hadn't seen such a meal for several weeks and his stomach rumbled, as if mocking his nonexistent mortality. Dragging his feet, he made his way to his partner, the single connection to a life he once had. He held back the tears, the memories of silver hair and blue eyes he will never see again- no matter times he died.
If only a tall boy Subaru hadn't seen before had suddenly decided to block his path, a metal try with a delicious-looking meat pie placed carelessly on its metallic surface. "Move," his voice was gruff, as if he thought the entire world was below him. The boy's eyes were cold but held the innocence that came from a warm, cuddled life- a life without a single day of suffering.
And Subaru was grateful. Only he, a man who had failed to save those he cherished, should suffer for sins of past loops. Despite this sense of twisted altruism that was firmly embedded within his heart, the knight felt angry. He had had a long day full of disappointment and despair- he just wanted one thing, to cry shamelessly in the arms of a dear friend but yet it was being delayed. Subaru wasn't a patient man, although this had improved drastically from his first series of loops- but the knight still had a limit.
The limit had been exceeded, bursting apart like heated cement and bitter rage filled his entire being. He wouldn't move, not for him. Subaru was being extremely petty, he knew this and was reminded of his duel with Julius and the shame it had brought him. But at this moment, he couldn't care less, as after all he had been through- from losing his memories and succumbing to insanity to fighting against a four hundred year old woman who was ridiculously loyal towards him, the knight wanted this terrible, horrible day to be over.
"No."
"What?" The intimidation that this boy tried to install within the small space between tables and long, flat chair that made up Subaru's petty stance- but for a man who had experienced the worst of humanity and suffered many deaths, it didn't faze him in the slightest. "Normally I would let you pass- but I've had a ridiculously long day. If you want to pass- go around, bastard."
"What did you say? I'll kill you!"
"Hahahaha, kill me? You?" Subaru laughed, tears fell down his cheeks towards the floor, dripping like rain on a sunny day- tears he had shed silently for a long time. Tears that had been frozen in his tear ducts just like how he had been frozen Puck's icy wasteland- for the simple purpose to lure his friends into the trap that he was okay. It was fucking hilarious, that this boy would careless state that he would end the knights life. "Now that's the funniest shit I've arrived in that fucking desert!"
He was attracting a crowd, eyes looking at him with caution. He had held back his tears for so long, withholding his despair for his friends sake. Now that all but one of them were absent from his life- Subaru had realised something.
He couldn't hold back his tears and he hated it. So much so, that he could only laugh in despair.
"Invisible Providence."
Subaru wanted to strike back, just once against the cruelty of the world and unfortunately for the tall boy- he just so happened to be standing in front of the knight. An invisible hand, small and pathetic burst out of his chest. The pain followed closely after its metamorphosis, but he had become so used to it, that it felt like a soft punch to the cheek.
The hand, unseen by all, slammed into the boys face. Invisible Providence was much weaker than Petelguese's unseen hand and seemed like ant when compared to Sekhmet's or even Satella's, but it was still ten times stronger than a punch from Subaru. The boy was hit in the cheek, a blue aura surrounded him but that didn't stop the power of the punch. The boy didn't have the weight to stay still from the such a strike, and he was sent flying.
Panting, as if such an action took a massive toll from his body, Subaru began to walk to Beatrice- ignoring the stares he received.
Hello, I hope you've enjoyed chapter two of Whipash. To answer a few questions, Subaru does indeed have his authorities- Invisible Providence and Cor Leonis (Sloth and Greed), but due to lack of combat, I've seen no need to use them, although I'm sure I've mentions Cor Leonis in the previous. Of course, authorities require no mana to be used- although, seeing as Beatrice hasn't vanished yet, one can assume that mana does exist, who knows, maybe they'll be another Od Laguna on Remnant.
To answer Allen Vth's review would be considered a spoiler, (although, it does tie in with Subaru's semblance), and I have roughly planned that Satella will be introduced later on. I don't know when though, I mostly have this plot planned in my head and such details are undecided. . Huntsman Ranks will be explained in later chapters, if anyone is confused about that small detail.
To explain about the first year Beacon students "power levels" are not within the realms of Julius yet, who had been able to go toe-to-toe against Reid, the first sword saint (who had been a key part of Satella's sealing) for a short time. The first years are much weaker than Elsa, although I'm sure Pyrrha can put up a decent fight against Arc 1 Elsa.
Please ask questions or give criticism, I know I can do better.
Sincerely HaydosMivill.
