"So you really got the job?" Juvia nodded eagerly. "Just like that?"
"Yes, I already got the email with all the information necessary. I'm so excited!"
"I can tell.." Juvia had informed Gajeel about the great news the moment she arrived back home. She still couldn't believe it, she was really going to be working for the Fullbusters. Gajeel on the other hand didn't seem to thrilled about it.
"Come on, be happy for me!"
"I am! It's just.. I don't know, I have a bad feeling about it."
"You have a bad feeling about everything."
He glared at her before sighing in defeat. "Fine, you're right, I should just be happy for you."
"Thank you." Juvia hummed while continuing with preparing dinner, ignoring the worried look her best friend was giving her.
Monday
"This is your office. We already set up everything on your PC, as well as your phone. Your direct dial will be the number 23. Everyone here has his own number. You need to type it in instead of the zero to call them. If you don't, you'll end up at the head office. But we have that all written down for you on the sheets at your table. You're an office manager. Which means more than being a secretary. Don't forget that."
The girl kept rambling about the things Juvia had to do. It's not that Juvia didn't appreciate it, but she already knows how basic office tasks work. She has worked in an office before. Admittedly, it wasn't such a big one, but it was an office.
"Yes, I'm aware. I've worked at several places at my old company, besides the secretariat." Juvia tried to say that as nice as possible, forcing a smile on her face. The girl just glanced at her before continuing her speech.
"Secretariat, human resources department, marketing department.. they're all places you should have worked at once before at least."
That's literally what Juvia just told her! Was this woman being serious? How stupid did she think Juvia was that she felt the need to explain the meaning of her job to her?
"Mister Fullbuster isn't one to shy away from firing people for incompetence so I suggest you put in some effort. Starting with those clothes.. a pure lack of elegance.."
Seriously? She had a nerve. Juvias outfit was perfectly fine, it was simple, not too much and yet classy and elegant enough. Her friends helped her pick it and she knows she can trust their choices.
"..and what's with the blue hair? It looks super fake."
"It's my natural hair color.." Juvia was growing more and more irritated. Was this women purposely messing with her?
"You're not giving our new member a hard time, are you?"
Juvia felt the goosebumps the moment she heard his voice. He walked into the room and stood next to Juvia, waiting for a response.
"No, of course not sir. I was just explaining everything to her."
"Really? Well, thank you, but that won't be necessary any longer. Since she'll be working in my department, I will take over." Juvia glanced at the raven haired boy. He wasn't even trying to hide the fact that he didn't particularly like this woman.
"But- Sir, the task was given to me by Mr. Silver."
"I'm aware. But like I said, this is my department. So it's my word that counts here. Feel free to let Mr. Silver know."
"But-"
"Nevermind. I think I'll let him know myself. It seems there's something I will have to talk to him about anyways. What was it you said earlier? I believe it was something along the lines of.. Mister Fullbuster isn't one to shy away from firing people for incompetence. Want to test that?"
Juvia looked at the woman who had paled so much, she could challenge a ghost. And that's something coming from Juvia considering she's naturally very pale. She couldn't help but feel a little bad for the woman. Sure, she wasn't exactly nice but being in such a situation, she'd wish the floor would swallow her instead.
She stole a glance at her new boss. He sure was something, using her words against her. One thing was for sure, it wouldn't get boring here.
The woman apologized before rushing out like her life depended on it. Gray kept his eyes on her until she was out of sight. Then he turned around, facing his new employee.
"What a great way to start the day, huh?" He had a warm smile on his face and Juvia couldn't help but smile back.
"I had worse." He chuckled at her response before turning around.
"Your coworker should be here soon, for some reason she's always late. She's got the same position as you, but she's been working here for some years now. You can start organizing your desk to your liking until she's here. She'll introduce you to everything later and will give you your work." Juvia nodded and watched Gray walk into his office. After he shut his door, she made her way over to her desk, getting familiar with everything.
Half an hour later a girl with brown hair came walking in, three cups of coffee in one hand.
"Hey there, you must be Juvia." The girl stopped in front of her and held out her empty hand. "I'm Cana."
Juvia shook her hand. "Yes, it's nice to meet you."
"Oh, you're cute." Juvia blushed slightly not sure how to respond.
Cana smiled and handed her one of the cups. "Here you go, you'll need this trust me. I've been working here for a while and without this I wouldn't survive."
"Oh, thank you. That's very nice. Wait, let me pay you back."
"Don't be ridiculous. It's on Gray anyway and the boy is rich enough. I think he can spend a little money on his pretty assistant." She winked and glanced behind her. "Talking about the devil."
"Hilarious as always. If only you were as good at your job, as you are at spending my money."
"Oh shut it, pretty boy. I'm amazing at my job and you know it." Cana laughed and handed him the other cup. "I get you coffee, which is my excuse for being late."
"The coffee shop is literally opposite the company, not even five minutes away. You're over half an hour late."
"There was a very long chain, sue me."
Gray just shook his head, a small smile on his face. Juvia kept glancing between the two. They were really comfortable around each other. And Gray was so laid back, it was obvious he was just messing with Cana. Juvia couldn't help but think back to all the articles she had read about him, the coldhearted boy who doesn't let anyone close. He was nowhere to be seen. You really shouldn't believe what the media tells you, that was for sure.
"Alright, get to work you two. There's a long month ahead of us."
"Yeah, yeah. Don't try to act all bossy now. That ain't going to impress this sweet girl." Cana laughed, dropping her arms over Juvias shoulder who couldn't help the slight blush appearing on her cheeks. Gray glanced at her before quickly turning away.
"You're unbelievable Cana.. don't scare her away too." Too? What does he mean with too? He walked back into his office, leaving the two girls on their own.
"Don't listen to that idiot I didn't scare anyone away. She just couldn't handle the pressure." Cana shrugged, a smug look on her face.
"Hey guess what!" She held her own coffee cup in front of Juvias face, looking at her proudly. "That's not coffee."
Yeah, Juvia could tell. The smell of the alcohol couldn't be missed. Juvia just shook her head and laughed. Yep, now she was one hundred percent sure. It was definelty not going to get boring here. Cana laughed too before checking Juvia out once more and making her way over to her own desk.
"You know what girl? I like you. I think we're going to get along quite well." Juvia nodded. She had that feeling too. Any doubts she had about the job before, they vanished. Juvia was ready for this next chapter in her life.
Gray wasn't kidding when he said that this was going to be a long month. It was just about lunch time and Juvia was already praying for the day to be over. The amount of work she had on her first day only was stressing her out and the phone in front of her just wouldn't stop. How many building sites did Grays department alone have? Juvia wasn't aware how much was actually going to be build in the near future. She had just finished a call with a very moody construction manager when Gray came walking out of his office.
"I see you are already working hard." He smiled while looking at the files Juvia had already finished. Juvia nodded while putting another file on the pile.
"I'm almost done with the files. The construction manager for the school project called. He wants to talk to you personally. I scheduled a meeting for tomorrow. The one from the mall project called as well but I scheduled a telephone conference for next week since the project isn't going to start anytime soon."
"Very well. I see why your old boss talked so highly about you."
"Oh, thank you."
"He warned me about one thing though." Juvia looked up to him questioningly. He warned him? But she never did something wrong, her boss always praised her work. Or was there something he just didn't mention personally? Juvia was freaking out on the inside, imaging the worst scenarios.
"He told me you're such a workaholic, when there's too much work, you tend to forget to take a break."
"Oh."
"So it's true?" He raised an eyebrow and watched her intensely. Juvia squirmed in her seat, not able to look him in the eyes any longer. He sighed and shook his head slightly. "Here's the thing, there is always a lot of work here. So if you continue that tradition of yours, you'll never have lunch again and I cant let that happen. I'm your boss so I have a certain responsibility. And I need my employees to be healthy and fit."
"Y- yes, of course, Mr. Fullbuster."
"Just call me Gray."
"Um, okay, Mr. F- Gray!" Juvia bit her tongue. She was a mess. She really needs to chill or he'll kick her out before the week is over.
"If you keep sitting her during the break time you won't have a proper one. The phone isn't going to stop ringing, trust me. Besides, I want to get to know you better. You'll be joining me on many appointments in the future which means we'll be spending quite some time with each other. I feel like I should know more than your name, don't you agree Juvia?"
Juvia nodded, not trusting her mouth and mind to work properly.
"Well, it's time for a lunch break. Come on, my treat." Juvia looked at him questioningly. Was he really inviting her to have lunch with him? Is that something you're supposed to do with your boss? Juvia looked to Cana hoping for a helpful signal, but the girl was leaning back in her chair and appearing to have the nap of her life. That girl is really something else. Her thoughts were interrupted when Gray continued speaking.
"Good. Then let's go already, I'm starving." He turned around and started to walk to the elevators. When he realized Juvia wasn't following him, he glanced back over his shoulder and raised an eyebrow. "You coming?"
The next thing she knew she was entering the elevator with him. She was going to have lunch with her boss, who happened to be handsome and charming. Juvia couldn't help but think back to Gajeels worried look. Oh, she was in trouble..
